MM, when Porch shows up today, she can tell you how happy she is in her Anglican church, one of the former Episcopal spinoffs now under the umbrella of a few Anglican bishops in Africa. Those are stealing more and more of us, even in DC.
Didn't get to the last thread in time. Yes, it is great being part of the conservative Anglican movement, but our church is still very small. On a good day I have six kids in my Sunday School class. Hoping to do better in our new building when it's finished.
I think anyone raised Episcopalian would love using the 1928 Book of Common Prayer. One of the most beautiful documents in English IMO.
Here is the prayer for soldiers I used yesterday:

There are scientistic studies which prove a steady diet of prog fodder increases credulity and gullibility while diminishing intellectual capability. We had a veteran's Mass last night at 5:30. Half a dozen or eight vet's attended and maybe 50 others. About the average for a weekday Mass.
Afterwards, I approached an old fellow using a walker and asked if he was a vet. He spoke with a heavy accent and said yes, but of the British Army. He was a Pole who had fought in Italy at Monte Cassino, one of the worst battles of the war.
By the end of the battle, the monastery, built @ 850AD or so, was gone. The Germans were dug in deep in the catacombs and Cassino was a strong point in the Winter Line. Italy is one line of mountains after another headed north and was a terrible campaign.
I mentioned to the gentleman that my wife and I had visited the Polish military cemetery there, and he teared up. He said over 2,000 were buried there. There was another, French cemetery as well where we prayed as well as a German cemetery where we did the same.
Over in London, they had 880,000+ poppies surrounding the Tower in memory of the Commonwealth casualties in World War I. The British do tradition very well and some don't forget.

Actually, "brave" barely describes those dudes. Among the many interesting aspects about SEALs that I really wasn't aware of is how...normal sized--even undersized by most male standards they are. The show delved into this in some detail.
Interesting anecdote:
Some years ago my alma mater went to San Diego for a bowl game against TCU. Our travel package put us at the Hyatt near Seaport where our team happened to be staying as well. It rained almost the entire time so we hung out in the hotel lobby for most of the time before gametime. Word got around that the freshman and sophmore football players were sent over to Coronado to train with the SEALs. We happened to be pretty close to the hotel entrance when they returned. I've never felt so sorry for young studly athletes ever in my life until then. Hoo Boy!

" I really wasn't aware of is how...normal sized--even undersized by most male standards they are"
Again, not sure if this was the same show, as it seemed only to be about the OBL raid, but I commented to the missus how kind of scrawny the guy looked. He was saying that basically they all assumed they were going to die in that raid, but they were going to make sure they took OBL with them, and, paraphrasing, "We're all going to die eventually anyway, and this is as good a way to go as any."

Matt,
Re: Monte Cassino,
I know there has always been controversy about whether or not we should have obliterated it, but I do know that my Pop who was there was of the opinion that it had to be taken out since in his opinion from the battlefield, the German's were indeed using it to target the Allies. Obviously opinions may differ, especially with 20/20 hindsight, but as a guy in charge of boys being shot at he felt it was sad but necessary.

This site says:
I remember being told by the monks taking us around Monte Cassino that almost all of the rebuild costs were financed with donations from Americans, from across the fruited plain. I am having trouble finding any reference to the source of funding for the rebuild at this time.

On the Muslims taking over the National Cathedral for a day of Multi-culti Kumbaya, we have this local story as another example of the War on Christianity:
Anchorage private school won't host state wrestling tournament after complaints about public prayer
For seven years, Anchorage Christian Schools hosted the wrestling championship for small schools in its gymnasiums, Cobaugh said. The school, which shares an East Anchorage campus with the Baptist temple, serves about 650 students from preschool to high school.
The tournament drew athletes from 1A, 2A and 3A public and private schools around the state, Cobaugh said. The school made no money from hosting the event
About 240 wrestlers and up to 1,500 spectators typically attended the two-day tournament. A prayer -- usually led by a pastor or other school staff -- was a regular feature of the tournament.
“The prayer was not an evangelistic prayer to influence anyone,” he said. “It was a basic prayer for protection of the student athletes, that all would compete well, have good sportsmanship. It was a very generic prayer, if I can use that word. It was unoffensive.”
Well that Prayer was the problem.
An attendee of the 2013 event complained about the Prayer, and the Alaska School Activities Association asked it (the Baptist School) to stop its practice of including a public prayer in the event.
The Church said "No, we won't quit our prayer", so the Tournament no longer will be held at the Baptist School.
Local Talk Radio news update this instant saying Begich says he will not concede.

Dennis Miller and Thaddeus McCotter are both raving about loving Keith Richards Biography. Apparently McCotter plays guitar and is a big fan of Richards playing with open tuning. Apparently McCotter has out a new book but Dennis is more interested on his take on The Stones. McCotter is equating our mess of a National Govt to a 6 Sstring Guitar and suggesting that like Richards, we need to minimize it into a 5 string guitar with open tuning, to get a different, more productive output with less. An quirky but fun interview segment.

Obviously opinions may differ, especially with 20/20 hindsight, but as a guy in charge of boys being shot at he felt it was sad but necessary--
My pop's B 17s were some of the primary obliterators of Monte Cassino from, I think, Tunisia at the time.
