DoT: But why aspire to 100% if you're happy with 2.4%?

I asked a stupid question and you gave a reasonable answer. Thank you.

As for the final snotty line above, I sure don't know what I did to deserve that.

Three terms is enough for any senator. Let Mitch Landrieu give his sis a job. Then she can live in her parents's house and enjoy some gumbo-far from the halls of power in the Senate.I know the voters of Louisiana are as smart as the ones in NC. and Colorado and Iowa.

Ry Cooder was a significant influence on Keith's riffs in Honky Tonk Women.

I saw the Fox special on The Man Who Shot Usama (and not Liberty Valance).

He was impressive. Not boastful, but clear about what he wanted to do and the immense danger facing them. He described SEAL training which made me think no one could pass it, particularly the swimming for 45 minutes with hands and feet tied.

It made me feel better that there still are men like him in this country. Fewer than before, but there are some.

A bright spot perhaps: If Gillespie had performed as equally well as the Virginia house delegation (8 GOP, 3 Dem) he would have had 1179492 votes, enough to have won by 180 thousand votes.

IIRC the main objection was the belief at the time that the monastery still contained thousands of irreplaceable manuscripts but the krauts apparently shipped them back to the Vatican prior to the battle.

Another WW2 OT. Last trip I finished this fascinating read, A Most Dangerous Book: Tacitus's Germania from the Roman Empire to the Third Reich

It's a history of Roman Historian Tacitus's 30 page write-up from 98 AD about the character and traditions of the Barbarian German Tribes that the Roman's had been defeated by and had to continually deal with along the border. Lost until rediscovery in the late 1400's, and then translated and printed into German shortly after Guttenberg invented the printing Press, it had huge influence on Martin Luther and German's as a whole in creating an idealized image of what they were as a people and "injected momentum" into the idea of unifying them as a single German nation. Unfortunately that mythos also perfectly fed into Himmler's and Adolf's propaganda of the Master Aryan Race, and allowed easy identification of contaminating Race's that deserved expulsion from the realm.

Anyhow, very interesting read, and the book opens with a recounting of a scene from 1943/44, explaining why, as the Allies were sweeping up Italy, Himmler and some handpicked SS Agents were ransacking a wealthy Italian Villa looking to get hold of the oldest extant copy of Tacitus's Germania in existence. IIIRC, I believe, he also wanted to get his hands on the Bayeux Tapestry as it also fit into his mental scheme of the Aryan Super Race and it's need for racial purity and elbow-room.

If nothing else, I found it a fascinating overview of the various things that occurred from about 800 AD onward that ultimately resulted in the creation of a unified Germany in the late 1800's.

Joe Manchin has been about half conservative, relative to other senators, in his votes. His National Journal composite conservative ranking was 54.5 in 2013, 52 in 2012, and 41 in 2011.

Whether that is conservative enough so that purists should welcome him to the Republican Party is something I will leave to them to decide.

(The 2011 and 2012 rankings are from the 2014 "Almanac of American Politics"; the 2013 is from the National Journal site. Those interested in such measurements will find much of interest at the site.)

centralcal

Well, Jim, Joe Manchin sounds like he might be more conservative than - oh say, Susan Collins - ha ha ha ha.

I am not a purist. But I am damned sick and tired of people claiming to be on the Red team, but always wanting to go over to the Blue team and give 'em a helping hand. But that's just me. I think for what he did, he no longer deserves the standard decency that a standard human deserves.

BTW, Jesse Waters says Gruber visited the White House 19 times.

Beckel says they all do it.

Stills played that wild riff in Suite Judy Blue Eyes in Modal E Tuning. All of us who tried to play off the record in regular tuning were doomed to go study history.

Without knowing any details, I assume MaryL is a brown stain circling the drain. So 54 Senate Repubs it will be (Manchin = 55?). Now let's see what McConnell does with the power. centralcal, I love seeing you - come back more often!

Jim Miller

centralcal - Well, Collins was just slightly more conservative than Manchin in every year. Here are her rankings from 2011, 2012, and 2013: 54, 55, and 55.2.

Note, by the way, that those are rankings, not percentages of votes, so, for example, Collins was more conservative than 55 other senators in those years.

(Math folks will have already noticed this, but I'll mention it for others. Since those are rankings, we should expect lower conservative scores for both senators in the new Senate, since liberals were replaced by conservatives -- even if Collins and Manchin vote the same ways, on the same issues.

I am using the same two sources as in the earlier comment.)

Explosive Charges: Black Democrat Alleges Racism in Lawsuit against Ohio Democratic Party

State Rep. John E. Barnes, a Cleveland Democrat, has filed a defamation lawsuit against the Ohio Democratic Party and its chairman, Chris Redfern, alleging white lawmakers get better treatment and he was punished for raising the issue of racism in the party.

Barnes said he faced discrimination and retaliation from his own party when he refused to join the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus in the Ohio House. Barnes said he feared it would harm his reputation to “associate with an organization whose moral compass he found to be troubling.” The lawsuit mentions members of the caucus who have been convicted of felony and misdemeanor offenses in the last three years. According to the complaint, Barnes ”saw little value to himself or to his district” in joining OLBC and “wanted to be treated as an individual rather than as a member of a presumed monolithic block of votes based upon his skin color.”

Maybe he should switch parties.

daddy

Miss Marple,

At the close Beckel was saying that he is in favor of the Keystone Pipeline! Shazamm! And as he continued jabbering about it I believe he let slip the Eff word, because the audio was cut while his lips were still flapping, then when the audio continued about 10 seconds later Jesse Waters was laughing as he said the following about the upcoming segment on the Springsteen/Foo Fighters Concert yesterday:

Waters: "Was a uhh, a slip of the tongue Bob. We have to go. Next, "Saluted With "Eff BomBs." Some of us would know something about that, and anti-War songs last night. That next."

Waters was eyeballing Beckel when he said it and I've played it back about 6 times in total so somebody dropped an Eff Bomb, and the audio was cut when Beckel was speaking.

I love how Waters gets under Beckel's skin.

So obviously anyone who concedes an Election is a criminal. Ha!

Alaska Senate Race: Why Democrat Mark Begich Refuses To Concede

Another Alaska Democratic political operative watching the vote count said another reason Begich won’t be conceding anytime soon is that “a lot of the votes counted last night were counted in conservative areas.”

“Why would he concede when he doesn’t know how many votes will come in? It’s crazy to concede…and it’s criminal to pre-empt the electoral process from coming to an end. Nothing has changed in the Senate race between today and yesterday and there are still a lot of uncounted votes,” he told ABC News.

My question on Manchin is whether he would be more conservative if he switched. Is he a team player who went along with dems on things that weren't something he was willing to take a stand on, or did he really believe in the issues he voted on?

Would he be a team player for the GOP if he switched? Or would he be allowed to have the same voting pattern as before.

Open guitar tunings don't have to be major chords, they can be minor or open intervals, e.g., E-B-E-B-E-B, open fifths. Since there's no third, AG or G#, it's neither major or minor. Open tunings have baffled many an ear-taught guitarist. FWIW, a strum on a regularly tuned guitar with no fingers on any fret is Em11.

The president's plans were contained in a draft proposal from a U.S. government agency. The source said the plan could be announced as early as Nov. 21, though the date might slip a few days pending final White House approval.

The only thing that could save Shaw is that her actions could be consistent with her "occupation" as a thief.

matt

The answer to all of the questions is basically yes. The battle actually started with the assault on the Gustav line across the Appenines in November. This is the same landscape that the Sabines and Romans fought over. I always thought Peter Paul Rubens "Rape of the Sabine Women" was something else. Art porn when I was perhaps 12 or 13.

It was somewhat like the assault on the Western Front in WW I where both the Germans were trying to outflank the Allies. This time it started at the Adriatic and hopscotched eventually to Anzio.

As November fell, my uncle's unit, which was paired with Darby's Rangers was on a hilltop @ 10 miles east of Cassino. It was the worst weather imaginable. They fought in it for a month before they were pulled back and another unit went in. I think more died of disease and frostbite but the fighting itself was brutal. Elite troops against each other.

In January the US 36th Division and the Brits tried to cross the Rapido River and got creamed. That's when Cassino began as well.

By all accounts Freyburg wasn't a very good general. Mass assaults by Indian, Polish and other units were repelled again and again by those Germans who weren't in Cassino who now fill a sizeable cemetery. A lot of MC's and a few VC's.

When my uncle's unit was pulled out just before Christmas they were sent for recuperation and replacements to Naples, where they apparently made a statement. They then trained for Anzio, which was half assed to satisfy Churchill more than anything else.

In the meantime, Cassino went on and on as more replacements came in. Anzio was meant to be the back door into Rome but it didn't happen until late May. It turned into a meat grinder where my uncle earned a Bronze Star and died a few days later.

The hell of it was that the unit CO, LTC William Yarborough, didn't believe in decorations. he said the unit patch was enough, and in a sense it was. Yarborough was later the father of the Green Berets. But there are still some pissed off veterans.

I tried to present a case with the Department of the Army for one of them years ago, which was denied because of filing dates missed years before. However, if you have the right minority status this gets waived.

Rome fell on June 5-6 and was overshadowed by D-Day. And then 5th Army went right back to another mountain range and fought the Germans some more until May of 1945. Luckily we saved Verona, which is a gem and Florence as well.

As an aside, Serego Alighieri just outside Verona where they make an ass kicking wine style called Amarone', was purchased by Dante' in the 1300's after he became famous and was to be blown up in the german retreat. The family fooled the Germans who had to pull out or be overrun. We stumbled upon it a few years ago and then stumbled out. Great wine.

The Italian Campaign was underresourced and not very well generaled. There was a lot of antipathy towards Clark and the first commander at Anzio, Lucas, was relieved of command.

When we were there you could see how the German artillery could sweep the entire valley with spotters at places like Cassino. Beautiful country except for the risk of high explosives in 1943-44.

Jack is Back!

F**k Manchin. He is committed member of the criminal enterprise known as the Democrat Party. Look at him today standing behind Landrieu when she played poor me over Cassidy introducing the Keystone bill in the House.

What every republican should do is find a television show to go on and tell the stupid idiots they were called stupid idiots. Unless they watch Fox or listen to talk radio, they know nothing about being called stupid idiots. MSM is not covering this. Not one word.

actually worse than that:

although going on a show like the cycle, who will know:

Janet

I just can't believe the entire nation isn't disgusted with this lawless administration.

President Obama on the Dept. of Homeland Security that HE is in charge of - “Every day that I wait, we’re misallocating resources, we’re deporting people that shouldn’t be deported, [and] we’re not deporting folks that are dangerous and need to be deported.”.

How can the POTUS go on TV & say something like that & it not be a big deal???

The airhead "journalist" Bob Shieffer sat there in front of Obama & said/did nothing...unbelievable.
Why didn't Bob Schieffer ask him -
Why are you misallocating resources?
Why are you deporting people that shouldn’t be deported?
Why are you not deporting folks that are dangerous and need to be deported?
