Reuters has more of the post-election Friday bad news dump:
Obama to send more troops to Iraq as campaign expands
(Reuters) - President Barack Obama has authorized the deployment of up to 1,500 more U.S. troops for Iraq, roughly doubling the number already there to advise and retrain Iraqi forces battling Islamic State militants, U.S. officials said on Friday.
The United States has about 1,400 troops in Iraq, slightly below a previous limit of 1,600.
So John Kennedy. Well, Hillarity! can fix this in her turn.
no comment on that bit of plagiarism ...

--Which fuse is blowing?--
The one that serves the auto-headlights, the overdrive switch and the car alarm. They're all on the same fuse.
Because it's intermittent I've never been able to tell if it was the overdrive or the auto headlights which blew it because I could never catch it when it blew.
Now I'm not using the overdrive switch, only the headlights to see if it blows it.
Unfortunately my heater core project kind of delayed my test.

Iggy -> look at my pervious comment ...
good grief I must be on the narcisolator!

Installed a new Thalman bushing last week and upgraded to the Knute Rockne valve while I had the dash off, DoT.
Still had to enter a red X in the log book (old AF lingo)

fuse 29 supply power trough cable 640 which is Red/yellow, red with yellow strip. It serves the TCS Transmission control Module C251, the Auto Lamp C216, the Central Security Module, and the Belt Reminder c238 and C235

my work here is done ...

Saw it, rich.
Close but no stogie. Mine blows when it feels like it, only when one of the circuits is used.
I'm trying to avoid tracking down the circuits and disconnecting the modules. PITA.
Time for some dinner.
Posted by: Iggy | November 07, 2014 at 10:40 PM
if it is an intermittent short in the cable harness it would randomly blow the fuse causing all 4 circuit to fail.
had this problem in my Taurus.

Ig, check the wires coming from the overdrive switch across the column to the harness plug.
Posted by: Threadkiller | November 07, 2014 at 10:47 PM
You don't need subsidies if there's no penalty for not carrying insurance, do you? Instead Congress could enact a law allowing interstate sale of insurance and people could pick any plan they want or none at all and the Congress could add in a provision for catastrophic insurance subsidies for those who cannot afford but want it and free hospitals from the present mandate of taking care of anyone who walks in the door.

Let me know if you have problems removing the column trim, assuming you didn't need to pull it for the heater fun.
The tilt lever should unscrew with vicegrips and the ign lock cyl pops out with a twist of the key and the press of a button. After the upper clamshell is off, look for wear on that wire.

That's what I'm trying to avoid. :)

Easy.
"Let's do this!"
;-)
Posted by: Threadkiller | November 07, 2014 at 11:04 PM
I had to pull all the trim for the heater core.
I have to go a couple of places tomorrow, during the day, so I'll use the overdrive switch a bunch and if it doesn't blow I'll know it's the headlights.
Since I've already got the headlight circuit opened up I'd rather wait on opening up the gear selector switch and lever.
I'll report back tomorrow.
Posted by: Iggy | November 07, 2014 at 11:05 PM
shit man it is just a wire that needs some electrical tape.
Posted by: rich@gmu | November 07, 2014 at 11:13 PM
I don't think it is the button. I'm guessing it is the wire-pair that runs across the top of the column. As you shift the wire has to move with some slack to accommodate the lever going up and down.
If you don't want to pull it apart just yet, I recommend operating the lever with intent to do harm. Go through all the gears multiple times and see if she pops.

What I am not saying but need to is that the wire's insulation has worn down over years of use. When you hit the sweet spot it shorts to ground.

see ... useful! lol ...

bet I could crimp, solder, and insert that piece of shit too ...

I swear to God, the doom people are not understanding how to negotiate things.
Be not afraid.
It's pretty funny that AllahPander and Poppin' are supposed to be these brainy online new media strategists and it only took a very small paragraph to destroy their latest Ode to Eeyore.

I'm doubtful it's the hot wire to the overdrive switch because I replaced the fuse a week or more ago and haven't turned the overdrive off or used the auto headlights to see if it was from moving the shift lever or possibly the auto alarm. Hasn't blown for that week so I know it's either a worn wire that is only hot when the overdrive is off or it's the auto headlight circuit.
Been too busy inhaling ethylene glycol and demisting my windshield with an old sock as I drive to pay too much attention lately. :)

There is always one hot wire in the pair going to the switch.
Posted by: Threadkiller | November 07, 2014 at 11:43 PM
Goodnight.
I will dig out a wiring diagram in the morning.
Posted by: Threadkiller | November 07, 2014 at 11:53 PM
--There is always one hot wire in the pair going to the switch.--
I know. I'm doubtful it's the always hot one since it doesn't seem to blow if I don't use the overdrive no matter how much I jack the shifter around. If it is the overdrive it has to be the one that's hot only when I turn the switch on (which turns the overdrive off).

Dam! I learn so much around here.

I get what you are saying, Ig.
Posted by: Threadkiller | November 08, 2014 at 10:04 AM
Found it. Hit the overdrive off switch and then shifted it a couple of times and out the little "off" light went as I watched. First time I've caught it as it blew. So now to find the wire.
Thanks TK and Rich. :)
Posted by: Iggy | November 08, 2014 at 11:20 AM
Awesome!
Let me know what you find.
Posted by: Threadkiller | November 08, 2014 at 11:55 AM
You nailed it TK.
Insulation worn through about an inch after the wire emerges from the shift lever and sometimes touches the shoulder of the shift column.
Problem solved. Hope the bill isn't too high. :)
Presumably the reason it was so intermittent is I very seldom move the shift lever while the overdrive is off for obvious reasons.
