The NY Times runs a conta-narrative piece arguing that maybe Democrats don't want to fully abandon white voters:
SAN DIEGO — PRESIDENT OBAMA’S executive order eliminating the threat of deportation for millions of undocumented immigrants is good policy. It is the right thing to do. But it is a dangerous move for theDemocratic Party.
Yes, immigration is an important issue for most Latinos and Asian-Americans. And yes, 63 percent of Latinos and 66 percent of Asian- Americans voted for Democratic candidates for Congress in the midterms. The executive order could solidify and expand that support for years to come.
But Latinos and Asian-Americans made up only 11 percent of the electorate. Even if immigration were the only issue driving their vote — and it most certainly was not — it could have shifted the national partisan balance of power by only a few percentage points.
Whites, meanwhile, accounted for 75 percent of the electorate. Far more than any other group, whites will decide the fate of the parties in the years to come. Unfortunately for the Democratic Party, the data suggest that immigration very much matters for whites.
Yes but throw in women, gays, and the college-educated guilt stricken and maybe they can get to fifty percent.
Immigrants are moving to almost every corner of the nation. They usually look different from the white majority. And, irrespective of the facts, the dominant narrative maintains that immigrants rely heavily on public services like welfare, education and health care, that immigrants take jobs from native-born workers and lower their wages, and that immigration is leading to cultural decline.
I'll score that as two out of three. The evidence on wages convinced even Paul Krugman that waving in unskilled workers from aborad does not exactly boost the wages of the native unskilled. That's why on even numbered days the Dems fret about immigration and on odd-numbered days they fret about stagnant working class and middle class wages - please synchronize your calendars.
And speaking of the Earnsest Prof, we know without looking he supports Obama's latest immigration move, so let's cut to his current rationalization:
That’s why I enthusiastically support President Obama’s new immigration initiative. It’s a simple matter of human decency.
That’s not to say that I, or most progressives, support open borders. You can see one important reason right there in the Baldizzi apartment: the photo of F.D.R. on the wall. The New Deal made America a vastly better place, yet it probably wouldn’t have been possible without the immigration restrictions that went into effect after World War I. For one thing, absent those restrictions, there would have been many claims, justified or not, about people flocking to America to take advantage of welfare programs.
Most progressives support greater border security? Uh huh. That is why they line up to vote for expanded Unicorn Patrols. Real attempts at security, on the other hand, are routinely derided as a waste of effort. My fave from that genre is Gov. Bill Richardson's classic "if you’re going to build a 12-foot wall, you know what’s going to happen? A lot of 13-foot ladders. This is a terrible symbol of America."
OK, back to the original theme. I'll accept at face value the hope that our undocumented friends from the South are not net consumers of government services (And don't vex me with data! I'm trying to feel the love here.) However, the third claim - immigration is leading to cultural decline - when rephrased, seems irrefutable. Is immigration leading to cultural change? Hands up if you say no... I don't see any hands.
Now, change doesn't have to be a bad thing. To pick a trivial example, I think salsa has it all over ketchup. But, just making connections at random here, if upwardly mobile white girls feel threatened and harassed on the mean streets of the Big Apple, wait until those streets look more like any Central or South American metropolis.
Well, this Times contributor notwithstanding, sticking it to the oppressive white patriarchy has been the Democratic Party project for years, with Obama as their crowning achievement.
OH YEAH First AGAIN

As with Obamacare, immigration by executive order is the gift that will keep on giving as members in office in 2014 come up for reelection. By the way, of the 58 Democratic senators who voted for Obamacare, 29 will be gone by next year.

Mary Landrieu got exactly 18% of the white vote in the jungle primary. Zero has surely just reduced her share come December. Maybe he does not care about Mary. But there are more vulnerable Democrats than they ever realize, or at least admit publicly. White voters are spilling out of the every available exits. Don't believe me? OK, Tom Harkin left in lily white Iowa and sitting in his seat Joni Ernst.
And the most vulnerable Republican in the Senate in 16, in my humble opinion, would be Mark Kirk. He has the fact that Rauner got elected statewide, and can assist with the reelection effort, imcumbency and now can proclaim his ability to help restrain an otherwise out of control executive to the voters.
Seems like the gun went off in the holster and hit the Democrats in the foot, from my viewpoint.
Maybe the last white person out of the LIAR Party could turn out the lights...

Keep in mind that Obama wants fundamental transformation. For him, losing a few Dem seats is worth it as long as his diktats are successfully implemented. At this point, given the GOP's tendency to conserve the level of "administrative stateness" handed to them when the GOP is in control, thus paving the way for further Dem encroachments on liberty and American sovereignty when the Dems are in power, I'd say Obama is the favorite to keep both 404Care and the current immigration diktat in place.

The issue here (for me at least) is not the pros and cons of cultural diversity (which can be achieved in many different, legal ways) but respect for the Constitution.
The critical ‘benefits’ to illegal aliens proposed by Obama, in return for them voluntarily ‘coming out from the shadows,’ are (a) the CERTAINTY of knowing that if they fall within the designated category, they will definitely not be deported, and (b) that this new status will be PERMANENT rather than temporary.
Yet, as can be seen here (http://www.justice.gov/sites/default/files/olc/opinions/attachments/2014/11/20/2014-11-19-auth-prioritize-removal.pdf - see esp. Section A), Obama’s own Justice Department has already told him that while it is OK for DHS to TEMPORARILY decline to deport the least troubling illegals ON A CASE-BY-CASE BASIS, it may NOT constitutionally PERMANENTLY decline to deport a designated CATEGORY of illegals.
In other words, Obama already knows without any doubt that his proposed executive action represents unconstitutional executive overreach rather than constitutionally sound “prosecutorial discretion.”
And his groupies are OK with that?

He's a smug bastard, but this conclusion is correct. Voter ID, has successfully prevented Dems from stealing very close statewide elections in the past decade. No other real effect, certainly no suppression of votes. Of course, what Silver doesn't say is that the Dems have moved past the AA 'walking around $$/boxed lunch"voter scam to the new Gordito ID'd non-citizen scam. This scam is fraught because the actual voter is ID'd and can be prosecuted. But if vote fraud doesn't result in deportation....

Culture isn't only or even primarily salsa vs ketchup or guys with big hats and even bigger guitars doing the deep dish combo mambo.
Among other things, it's respect for the law as practiced here, it's respect for the institutions and traditions that make America what it is, it's a sense that America is different and special among nations because of those institutions and traditions and those who are here illegally have already demonstrated a contempt for those things, especially those who harbor the La Raza ideology.
If they didn't have contempt for those things they'd get in line and do it right. The only ones who have more contempt for those values are the leftists who cynically draw them here (and those idiot libertarians who think open borders is somehow a libertarian ideal).

OL, I think the best way for Congress to deal with this is through the appropriations process. The next Congress should send an appropriations bill to Obama funding debt service and entitlements and defense and the federal governmental agencies, but should contain a provision defunding any implementation of the Obama Illegal Immigration Diktat. I think when the dust clears, Obama would win in the federal courts on whether he has the power to issue his order. The power of the purse, not impeachment/conviction or the federal courts, will be the primary Congressional weapon in the next two years. Even defunding may be problematical, because a big part of the diktat is non-prosecution of illegals, which Obama doesn't need any funds for.
If Americans keep electing Obama types, the federal courts aren't going to save us.

TC: Agreed. The voters have to rally against this injustice in 2016. The thing I regret the most about the unfair targetting of the Tea Party groups in 2012 is that it cost us at the ballot box. The lies about Obamacare and Benghazi also would have taken their toll on whether voters decided to trust Obama and give him another term. All that was hidden fromus and we were repeatedly lied to by Obama and the dems throughout the process. What saved us in the midterms was we were on an equal par in the money game and the ground game had improved. Dems emboldened by 2012 sent up mediocre candidates and a sorry playbook of racism and a war on women that fell flat on its face.

Just a reminder of the insanity with which we are dealing:
Symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder
In order for a person to be diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) they must meet five or more of the following symptoms:
•Has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
•Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
•Believes that he or she is “special” and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)
•Requires excessive admiration
•Has a very strong sense of entitlement, e.g., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations
•Is exploitative of others, e.g., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends
•Lacks empathy, e.g., is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others
•Is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her
•Regularly shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes

Yes, exdemocrat, I think SCOTUS would take the case, and would hold that the case is justiciable. I then think SCOTUS would probably go 9-0 for Obama's authority to issue his diktat.

Yes, but progs are so boring and predictable, TC!
Another boring prog anecdote: yesterday was the annual Thanksgiving lunch with parents at my daughter's school. My husband and I love the food that is served in the lunchroom (turkey, gravy, stuffing, sweet potatoes etc.) and always look forward to it, but there are always jokes and comments from the other parents about the quality of the food, which drives me INSANE.
Can't we just be thankful for vast American abundance, and for the people who bring it to us, for once in our freaking lives without insulting institutional food like snarky ungrateful teenagers? Apparently not.
Blessedly, we decided to sit by ourselves this time and avoid other grownups.

Mad Jack - "does not require one to be a citizen" Does not require one to be here legally, you mean.

Uh-oh, Porchlight. The lunchroom doesn't sound Michelle-compliant!

Fewer than 1000.
I'd take that bet because I think you underestimate the number of people who hate western culture and look for the most in-your-face way to express it. That's only 20 people per state. You probably exceed that number in that noted theologian, Pelosi Galore's, district.

Cod soaked in lye, and salty licorice.
I take it children who are bad are given that instead of coal in their Christmas stocking?

the OLC guidance analyzed by a Volokh contributor persuades me this will be of no big help to illegals; will create an administrative nightmare, but is hardly subject to a constitutional challenge. Plenty of room for legal challenges though. Don't try to bluff this bluffer.

You're probably right, Cap'n, although I stipulated families, not people.
I guess you'd have to define "celebrate," too. I bet a lot of people own some junky Kwanzaa decorations and put them on a table next to the Christmas tree for a week or so, but that's the extent of it.
Stupid made up prog "holiday."

Drew from The Horde (sorry, can't link from this computer) comes up with a novel idea: don't invite Precious to give SOTU in joint session next year. Delightful idea. Chances of it happening? None, not with McRino et al shuffling around the halls of Congress.

there are always jokes and comments from the other parents about the quality of the food
It takes a special type of snotty arrogance to do that when they're supposed to behave as adults. I'm sure their children will grow up to be mouthy brats with extensive behavioral problems unless they rebel against their parents rude sense of specialness.

Dave (in Mass): That's exactly what I meant. I figured Marsha backing me up would get the point across sufficiently but backup is always helpful. Thanks.

I meant to say "families" when I said 20 per state, Porch. I probably know at least one family that would do it out of some misplaced sense of racial solidarity and poor education.

According to the OLC--The law requires each of these cases to be heard on a case-by -case basis. Lots of luck with that.

You're probably right, Cap'n. I'll bump it up to 5000.

Our "Fishes and Loaves" ministry cooks and serves a Thanksgiving lunch for all our students, faculty and parent volunteers eac.. h year. This years is Tuesday. Its Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, and hot rolls. The kids not only clean their plates but most ask for seconds.
I work in the kitchen and plate the turkey. About 6 of us handle all the cooking and we have aout 10 parent volunteers to bring out the food to the tables. It is the most fun I have ever had in the kitchen watching the kids wolf down that meal.
Hit's 12:12 reminds me that Janet Reno can rot in hell for that little crime of hers and Billy Jeff.

Speaking of holidays--my daughter who lives in a Chicago suburb had her kindergarten child's Thanksgiving party cancelled--teacher told daughter that some had complained because it was culturally insensitive! (Children would wear Pilgrim outfits, etc.)

I was surprised by Ingraham's statement last night that a single congressman could bring the lawsuit. If so, that's news to me.
I really can't decide how I think the judiciary will respond.
Posted by: Danube on iPad | November 21, 2014 at 02:06 PM
I believe the judiciary will respond that Congress has a remedy, impeachment.
That brings me to this conclusion. Never again should we elect as President a minority or even a woman that, because of those immutable characteristic, could not be impeached.
Were Obama not a minority, he would be impeached.
