Josh Marshall contemplates one possible outcome of Obama's heralded executive action on immigration and concludes it helps the Democrats:
If there are 5 million people who are affected by this order, the number of people who either have family ties to these individuals or affective relationships with them is much larger. I don't know if it's 15 million or 20 million or 40 million. But it's a lot more than 5 million people who will feel acutely the fate of these people hanging in the balance with the 2016 election. And advocates on both sides of the immigration divide, deporters and pro-immigrant activists will press the issue throughout the 2016 cycle. The 5 million affected can't vote and won't be able to for years. But many family members, friends, community members and employers can.
Yes, these people have been waiting for years to be able to come out of the shadows. But it's one thing to wait and another to come out of the shadows and then be forced to retreat into the darkness, with a perhaps heightened risk of deportation and family separation.
It all adds up to an intense and likely toxic campaign fracas in which a lot of people will have a unique and intense motivation to vote. That will apply to people on both sides of course. But the anti-immigration voters vote consistently almost every cycle. And as intense as your animus is toward undocumented immigrants, it's hard for it to compare to the motivation of voters who directly know someone who will be affected. And that latter group has far more 'drop-off' or occasional voters.
Sure, whatever. But a much greater potential impact will occur if, implausible as it might seem to some, the hateful nativists are right and de facto amnesties don't take place in a vacuum.
Maybe, just maybe, the news that Democrats are done with deporting anyone will reach Central America, sort of the way similar news reached that area last spring. If in 2015 and 2016 the Texas and California borders look like they did in 2014 with people eager to get into the US and collect their 'permiso' then it is likely that the Democrats will have electoral problems come November 2016.
Of course, if the Democrats are right and we can grant a huge unconditional amnesty without attracting a new surge of illegals, well, good for all of us.
Oneth?!

The DoJ will be doing everything it can to prevent scrutiny or tossing out the votes by all those adults covered by the XO. Perhaps new friends as well.
That has always been the point--to use the West's rules on democracy against them through the ballot box. One of my Radical Left newsletters yesterday mentioned that the Economic Justice oriented radio program they were doing once a week with some Marxist prof now had 35 radio stations broadcasting.
It is ridiculously cold out there for January, much less mid-November. If this does signal the nature of the winter, it will be a brutal time to be shutting down coal plants.

JoshM is obnoxious but he's not stupid. he knows that this whole illegal business from Driver's Licenses to pathway to citizenship is all about restoring and increasing the Margin of Fraud in future elections. Voter ID laws will eventually minimize the old fashioned 'walking around' money and box lunches that were given to AA voters. That cuts down the margin of fraud in big cities/counties in competitive state elections (NC, Fla, Va, Pa, Ohio, Mich etc) so La Raza vote fraud from Driver License ID and cable bills will have to replace it. JoshM knows it; the rest from him about 'shadows'is outright BS.

Do you really think they will be violenting for very long in Ferguson at 14 dergrees Farenheit? C'mon, y'all?
They'll get out there and realize it's colder than a banker's heart and head for someplace warm and indoors ASAP. The first indoor riot? Is there a mall they can protest in in Ferguson or did they already burn it down?
I really think the majority is readying to slam down on the leftists very, very hard. Good Americans will hold back and be polite until a line is crossed, and it looks like with Ferguson, the immigration debacle, and the rest of the scandals that line is being crossed.
David Brooks is in full yo-yo mode and the media are doing more contortions than the rubber lady on the midway. The jig is up and now the lies and contradictions are simply boggling most people's minds.
"If you like your health insurance" has morphed into a modality of bald lies that is unprecedented.

OL-the final drop dead date for all the governors to have their WIOA compliant economic development plans and boards set up locally and at the state level and the plans filed for approval with DoLabor and Ed is March 2016.
Supposed to be done earlier so basically any Rep Governor will be running for Pres in 2016 in the primaries with that as public record. Something highly likely to anger part of the base of primary voters. Anyone think the timing is an accident?
Posted by: rse | November 18, 2014 at 12:24 PM
"So everyone who knows an illegal immigrant will vote for Democrats in 2016?"
Not exactly. The Mothers of Precious Snowflakes (MoPS) are more than a little leery of the Fascist racists' program to distribute spoils solely on the basis of color. The MoPS demonstrated their opposition this year and the 18-24 split provides a strong indication that MoPS antipathy is being passed on to Precious Snowflake herself. As Precious Snowflake matures and watches spoils distributed by color, it is quite likely her antipathy will harden as it grows.
We really shouldn't interfere with gruber model driven progicide.

Wonderful, if the guy is correct:
"The chairman of the House Appropriations Committee pitched GOP colleagues on a plan to rescind funding for targeted programs in the next Congress to respond to President Obama's planned executive amnesty, throwing a new idea into a ring already full of them.
“'Chairman Rogers just got up and said if we pass an omnibus and then the president does this executive amnesty, he said we can rescind it, and we can rescind it with 218 and 51 and we don't need the president. That's what he just told me. I've never heard that before,' said Rep. Matt Salmon (R-AZ), a key conservative lawmaker who has emerged as a leader in crafting strategy on the issue."

There's going to come a point in the next two years where the R's are going to have to impeach Obama, in order to show that they're at least trying to stop him from doing further damage to this country and its citizens. How high does the body count have to go before we get there?

DoT@1:39. That what I assumed they would do since the Senate results last week. Of course Obummer will veto the recision, but then the Debt Ceiling will be conditioned on the same things. Ultimately, Obummer, and Obummer alone will be shutting down the gov't over HIS OWN EOs. Coming after his budget recision vetoes, that is a winning hand to play with persuadable voters to start the '16 war of attrition.

Overstaying your visa without permission isn't a crime?
Does that mean I can keep driving after my license expires?
Posted by: boatbuilder | November 18, 2014 at 02:13 PM
"I've never heard that before"
No, Congressman, you've never misunderstood what you heard in that way before. Reconciliation can be used to avoid cloture and rescission can be done within a reconciliation but BOzo has to sign it before it becomes law.
Congress can't play Lucy and the football with the Executive on the budget.
The key in this farce is the length of the CR/Omnibus to be passed by this Congress and the ability of the new Congress to move an actual budget - or a series of ever diminishing CR's in conjunction with an ever increasing number of actual department budgets.
Posted by: RickB | November 18, 2014 at 02:16 PM
Yes, Rick, this Congress has to pass a very short CR to enable the new Congress to reflect the wishes of the voters.
Posted by: Captain Hate | November 18, 2014 at 02:19 PM
Overstaying your visa without permission isn't a crime?
>>>No. It is a civil violation. DoT has been mentioning previously actions can be unlawful or actions can be illegal. In regards to visa overstay-it is a violation of civil immigration regulations, generally speaking, and it requires navigating the immigration bureaucracy to straighten out-up to and including leaving the country.
Does that mean I can keep driving after my license expires?
>>>It depends on the state. It is unlawful to do so, generally, but you can if you are willing to take the risk. TC would most likely recommend you get it straightened out before you go driving however.

Today's NYT also enlightens us on the unholy alliance between the insurance companies and Obama. They should also look into Big Pharma.
The whole thing is crony capitalism at its worst. Buying off the state of Massachusetts on Romneycare; The Nebraska deal, Landrieu's deal. It's as crooked as crooked gets.
On another note I just had another very weird coincidence. Querida forwarded an news article from last week on the use of brain stimulation to treat PTSD. She gets all the news feeds on autism and so this came in the back door, if you will.
USC's Medical School has a clinic in town that does this particular treatment for autism. It apparently works on some PTSD patients as well.
I posted the article on FB on our Association page and one of the 509'ers recognized the subject of the article as one of ours. He was badly injured in '06 in Iraq.
I called over there and he is out of town. I stated that we were 509'ers and the receptionist told me to wait a minute because one of the other people working there was in the same unit.
Turned out that the kid is one of the experts on the technology and he was part of the PSD (bodyguard) team for one of my best friends. heading over there tomorrow.
Very strange. Right here in town. I have known of this kid for years, and now he and his buddy are working on the same kinds of issues as myself.

DoT I am sure the guy who never heard of it is still confused about where the President's signature is needed in the process. I suspect he is mesmerized by the fact that reconciliation bills need only simple majorities and therefore get around the filibuster, but I don't think an actual funding bill, or a funding bill with lines rescinded, becomes law without the President signing it.
IF that is the case, then all this really means is the GOP by themselves can put a bill on the President's desk denying funding for amnesty but which he can refuse. In that case it is as meaningless in reality as sending him a Keystone Pipeline Bill just so Fat Mary can say she voted for it while knowing it will go nowhere.
So it always gets back to a shutdown standoff, seems to me, unless they can come up with a veto over ride number of votes.

President still has to sign it into law
Or veto it. No voting present.
Given all the caterwauling about obstruction and needing to get the things done, I am going to enjoy the hell out of putting Zero on the hot seat. A lying incompetent obstructionist!

Hey ya'll, Jeff Goldstein's mom passed today.
Just so happens I met him and his wonderful wife Friday. We drank beer. Made fun of people, and discussed our mother's.
Turns out he's a really, really nice guy that really out punted his coverage if you know what I mean.
My heart breaks for the Goldstein's.

Something that is illegal is against the law, whereas an unlawful act merely contravenes the rules that apply in a particular context.
>>>I included "generally" because some states it is illegal, as in a violation of a specific statute. "driving without a license" seems to cover a suspended or revoked license too-actions proscribed by statute in every state I can think of.
