An equally stupid obsession of the left : the Streetcar of the Future!!!!.
Team crony in Milwaukee wants their streetcar because unless $100 million or so is spent removing parking, and $1.8 million per year subsidizing empty streetcars, children in Milwaukee will go hungry and have crappy schools.* this while Milwaukee can't afford enough police officers to blunt Chicago level violence in the hood. To make it better, Mayor Barrett set up TIF districts to pay for it -- taking all property tax from part of the city to pay the bonds (instead of funding city programs like child nutrition or police; public school taxes go to the streetcar instead; sewer fees got to the streetcar while Lake Michigan is filled with untreated waste; etc).
* expect more of the same as the NBA whines about a home for the Bucks. Mother state and surrounding counties refuse to fund this one.

Posted by: Captain Hate on the iPad | December 15, 2014 at 08:47 PM
Yes, jimmyk...that's their line.
Streetcars are just slow, uber expensive, buses on tracks with overhead electrical wires.
If a city already has buses...they will need different drivers, different mechanics & tools to maintain the streetcar system. So the city will have 2 systems to support now. Where will the "bus barn" area be for the streetcars? Usually cost estimates leave out all those considerations.
Here's the AST site that has good links - http://www.sensibletransit.org/
Also, San Antonio voters finally got rid of their streetcar insanity too.
this article applies to streetcars too if the peddlers are pushing the "green" angle for streetcars - Study: Your all-electric car may not be so green

Clarice, there is strong pushback already. However, Barrett lost to Walker twice. Business is leaving Milwaukee as fast as it can. Barrett needs a trophy and the rest of them (city council) need the graft. The Chamber of Cronies is upset about the development along 94 in Racine and Kenosha, plus are having a hissy fit over the Kenosha Casino project. They need to be the center of the universe, but the surrounding counties are tired of sending them money to waste. When faced with an OPM revolt, they want a trolley, and by gum they will get their trolley. End result is Milwaukee will make Detroit look populated in a decade or sooner. As long as my taxes don't go there, they can sink into the deep tunnel for all I care.

Streetcars would let passengers off in the middle of streets. (There was one in Brooklyn, where I lived. It left passengers off every few blocks, right in the middle of Coney Island Avenue.
Now, remember the streetcars were in the LEFT LANE! Cars with green lights just came shooting by. And, the passengers were like bowling pins. Lots of dead ones!

The Brooklyn Dodgers. They were named this when they played at Ebbets Field. Six different trolley lines "merged" at some point near this stadium. And, people "dodged" to get inside to see a baseball game.
In 1957 the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to LA.
Men used to go to those games wearing their 3-piece business suits. AND, wearing hats!
Only in 1960, when JFK came in and refused to don a fedora, did hats become passe.
Trolleys are really nasty. As I said, you leave the curb ... to get on and off ... in the left hand lane of very busy traffic.
It probably cost a nickel a ride. And, the trolley driver had a gadget where he could produce nickles dimes and quarters from a metal carrier he wore on his belt. He didn't take the fares, though. Because there was a contraption right as you got on; where you dropped your change into it ... And, you could watch it circulate down the glass, and disappeared into the bin, below.

Bastards! At mass on Sunday our young priest asked if anyone had bad news that week and Mrs. JiB raised the 4 young Christians martyred for refusing to convert to Islam. The church erupted with applause and quiet prayer.
When dealing with pre-Stone Age reptiles you need more than hand-wringing political correctness and sloganeering. We can always send DiFi over to negotiate a more reasonable approach in their tactics.
Posted by: Jim Eagle | December 16, 2014 at 06:57 AM
Addendum: The applause was after a long colloquy between Mrs. JiB and the priest over the resolve of the youths to continue their devotion to Christ and not to some maniacal institute camoflauged as a religion of peace.

This attack by the Taliban makes this hand-wringing about EIT look pretty silly. Also the hostage tragedy in Sydney.

Streetcar vote today, or maybe not. A minority on the city council may be able to delay the vote, big time crony upset that his trolley curb service to his new project won't happen, police union pissed that officers get furloughs while Barrett plays with his toy train. A delay puts the council vote in the middle of Barrett's re-election campaign.

As the Sandy Springs mayor prattles on about finding the right mix of retail and all the expensive planned parks and high end luxury high rises that will last 40 years and other ideas that suggest no good sense, just political power, it would be nice if these type of warnings were better understood. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/industry-news/property-report/ghost-mall-struggles-in-suburban-paris/article22093120/
This "if we build it they will come" mentality that falls in with the streetcar frenzy is going to impact so many areas, especially as the development is financed via bonds counting on the future economic success. No one seems to appreciate why the successful shopping centers were all built in the 60s. Few businesses can survive with the rents all these new developments have to charge yet we still see the mowing down of existing small businesses for planned "Live. Work. Play" communities.
By the way the mayor used to head the Rep party is Ga. Now he thinks politicians via eminent domain can create the right retail mix.

Yeah, I'd say there are three kinds of muslims;
1. Secular ones who just want to live their lives and almost always are powerless and not in a position of governance.
2. Fundamentalist whackos, who are at war with all outsiders and are either stateless terrorists or running places like Iran.
3. Orthodox muslims, who are more tolerant of other faiths yet still seek to expand by force and rule the world.
Only the powerless of number 1 can be peacefully lived with and even they often side with 2 and 3 when push comes to shove.
