Here's an Open Thread topic---Lottery fraud in New Jersey:

Report: Half of N.J.'s most frequent lottery winners are lottery retailers, family members

Half of the 20 most frequent New Jersey Lottery prizewinners since 2009 are reportedly either licensed lottery retailers or family members of store operators.

An investigation by the Asbury Park Press found that as a group, those 10 people collected 840 prizes totalling nearly $1.8 million and that about 70 percent of those payouts were for Pick 4 tickets, where the odds of winning are 1 in 10,000.

I wonder how they do it with the Pick 4.

I do know that for the scratch off, in a local Bar up here the bartender gets mad because the Bar Manager monitors which scratch off games have not yet paid off yet, and then when the remaining scratch off tickets are relatively small he pulls them from general sale and saves them for select customers.

I don't play Lottery's, but there has to be some scam in Jersey simply from the looking at the small pool of winners.

Iggy

Why couldn't the cops shoot this POS?

re the lottery scam - the storeowners are obvious suspects, but there is another possibility - maybe people sell winning tickets back to the store owner just to keep their own windfall quiet.

That may actually be the opposite of smart - years ago I recall a story about multiple winners of lotteries. Turns out small-time hoods were buying winning tickets just to turn illegal cash into easily explained Lucky Winnings.

two interesting pieces in Carlos Slim's, no not the cause dejure, one was from Flathead, but it a comment from anti Salafi activist in Morocco, rebutting Obama, the other was Eliza Griswold, who in the course of relating the tale of a longtime antiAssad activist, raises a question about where the funds for the free syrian army went?

For those entertaining the notion that all this Rape Reporting is being orchestrated to some purpose by folks behind the scenes, this story up at Insty provides some interesting Math about Mass Rapes at Berkeley

1) Zero Rapes reported at Berkeley Frats from 1 Jan to 27 Sep, 2014.

2) September 28, 2014: “Yes Means Yes” law comes into effect in California

3) Since 28 Sept 2014, at least 13 Rapes reported at Berkeley Frats.

I wonder which numbers are more suspect, the Berkeley Rape numbers or the Jersey Lotto Winners?

Captain Hate

Lotteries have always been a grey area of graft. About 15 or 20 years ago the alternate fishwrap around here had a good investigative piece on how the daughter of Carl Stokes worked for the lottery commission and was shaking down inner city convenient store owners for a certain number of tickets to be approved to sell them. Apparently the state highway patrol wrapped up the case and sent it to then prosecutor Stephanie Tubbs Jones, who promptly did nothing with it before being tapped to take over Louis Stokes congressional seat.

Captain Hate

I'm afraid to click on the memeorandum story of "GOP pins hopes of dismantling ObamaCare on the courts". These gutless cowards have a wildly popular stance on something which has polled very unfavorably for a much longer time than, say, a government shutdown and have to go whining to some other branch of government to do their job for them.

rich@gmu

The Chamber and Wall Street just want it fixed not eliminated (mend it, don't end it).

However, even if they were to pass a repeal, Obama wouldn't sign it, so we are stuck with it for another two-ish years.

Bori

Daddy,

You would expect that an illustrious University such as Berkeley would have students that are a little proficient in Math.

If according to the reports in a little over 60 days there have been only 13 reports of rape or sexual assault that would mean that a total of less than 50 per year.

In a campus with 36,000 students, that is a far cry from 1 in 5. Even if as some claim that only 10 percent of incidents get reported, that is still far from what is claimed.

Danube on iPad

Is there hope for Leo Dofrio? Perhaps. There is always the possibility that a federal grand jury will look into the conspiracy of the Supreme Court clerks to vex him.

"I can also tell you the grotesque shennanigans by the individuals who clerk for the nine justices should also be the subject of a federal grand jury. What they pulled in Leo Donofrio's case as well as Orly Taitz', I believe borders on criminal. Let me tell you another dirty little secret. Individuals pay attorneys hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in legal fees to get their case to the U.S. Supreme Court after years of waiting for the 'wheels of justice' to turn. For too long, clerks are the ones choosing which cases will be heard."

Iggy

The 1 in 5 claim comes from an online survey with a typically low response rate.

How can they adjust for the possibility probability that those who have been sexually assaulted would respond at a disproportionate rate, possibly hugely so?

THE ERDELY WHO STOLE PLEDGEWEEK

Every Hoo girl in Hooville liked Fratboys a lot
But the Erdely who lived North of Hooville did not!

Erdely hated Fratboys! The whole Fratboy season!
Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason.

It could be, perhaps, that her shoes were too tight.
It could be her head wasn't screwed on just right.

Perhaps her agenda was Alinsky division.
Or maybe her goal was White Male derision.

But I think that the most likely reason of all
Was her brain and her panties were two sizes too small.

But, whatever the reason, her brain or her shoes,
She stood there on Pledge night a hating the Hoos,

Staring down from her perch with an Erdely frown
At the lighted Frat Houses below in Hootown,

For she knew every Hoo boy in Hooville beneath
Was busy now hanging a Frat Pledge-week wreath.

"And they're hanging Greek Letters," she snarled with a sneer.
"Tomorrow is Pledge-week! It's practically here!"

Then she growled as she yanked trou' uncomfortably wedging,
"I must find some way to keep Hoo Frats from pledging!

For, tomorrow, I know all Frat liking girls
Will be dressed to the 9's, They might even wear pearls!

And then! Oh, the noise! From the Hoo girls and boys!
There's one thing I hate! All that Happy Frat noise!

And they'll shriek squeaks and squeals,
Racing 'round In their loafers.
They'll dance under mistletoe tied over sofas.

They'll flaunt their argyles. They'll sing their Frat cheers.
They'll blow their Vuvuzelas. They'll drink their Frat beers.

They'll wear their Frat togas. They'll spin their Turntables.
They won't speak in Right Speak or use PC Labels!

Oh they'll act just like humans have acted for eons,
Unlike Elite me they'll be acting like peons!

Then the Hoo boys and girls, will sit down to a feast.
And they'll feast! And they won't think of me in the least:(

They'll feast on Hoo pudding, and rare Hoo roast beast,
Which has not been approved by Michelle O in the least!

And then they'll do something I hate most of all!
Every Coed in Hooville, the tall and the small,

They'll stand close together, something very perplexing.
They'll stand hand-in-hand, and those Hoos will start texting!"

"And they'll text! And they'll woo! And they'll woo! and they'll sing!"
And the more Erdely thought of this Frat partying ,
The more Erdely thought, "I must stop this whole thing

Why for 42 years I've put up with it now!
I must stop this Pledge-week from coming! But how?"

And the Erderly steamed and the Erdely shook,
And the Erdely's eyes saw her Alinsky Book,

Then she got an idea! An awful idea!
The Erdely got a wonderful, awful idea!

"I know just what to do!" The Erdely laughed in her throat.
"I'll make Rape Allegations that'll make folks take note!"

And she chuckled, and clucked, "What a great Erdely trick!
With a Rolling Stone essay, I will make 'em look sick!

I will smear them and slime them,
like we did down at Duke
And print lies so sordid it'll make people puke,

I'll rely on my comrades that cheered Sandra Fluke!
To condemn such behavior which all must rebuke.

And yes it is lies, and yes it's unfair,
But Rolling Stone mag and I sure don't care.

We don't care about truth, Only narrative matters,
So what if I leave the Hoo Frats in tatters?

I will poison their Campus and ruin their lives,
And build my career on this body of lies!

With NPR guest-shots and MSNBC promo's,
I'll make everyone hate everybody but Homo's!

On the gambling..errr..lottery front,

A fellow was on John Stossels' show and caught the last part of his thoughts on the subject and he said that gambling revenues are 'way off and that gambling around the world is in the toilet!

The reason is basically that 1. people are too poor to gamble and 2. governments suck so much money out of pockets that people can't afford the risk.

As a former blackjack dealer I found that pretty interesting.

daddy

glasater,

Cool. Where did you deal cards?

And was that a fun job, or boring, or sad or what? I used to do Vegas layovers in the early 90's (Flamingo Hilton), and that was much fun to just watch the action, but I played very little and only at very inexpensive tables.

Hi Miss M!

Just in with the dogs. Had a nice wander thru the neighborhood. Thought at first we had Borealis but it turned out to just be high clouds lit by moonlight. Boys did their business and I gave them a quick late night bite, so all is well and we'll be heading up in a minute to bed.

Am watching a replay of Howie Kurtz's FOX Show, and Cheryl Atkinson is on and has more brains than Howie and the other 2 reporters put together. It's a pleasure to see her. She just said this about this Sabrina Erdely Reporter we've all been talking about:

Kurtz: How significant is it that this investigative piece appeared in Rolling Stone?

Atkinson: It matters. I cannot think of a straight News organization that would have thought for a nano-second that publishing this story in this form, and by straight News organization I mean Newsweek, Time, ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, and so on. I looked at the Reporter's background and she's written some great pieces from magazines like, on her resume', Cosmopolitan, Self, GQ, New Yorker, Mother Jones, Glamour, and Men's Health. None of these, including Rolling Stone, are News organizations. And I would just point out that even News organizations with the most rigorous Editorial controls make mistakes, so this is a whole mother story.

Sheryl is more complementary of the Editorial control and integrity of Time, NBC, CBS, and ABC than I am, but I understood her point.

I suppose you as the daughter and granddaughter of Newsmen have your own insights about the integrity of those outfits:)

Janet

Why is it controversial to name the woman that told a false story to a magazine?
She didn't mind tarnishing a fraternity & her school.

Some of the signs held by people protesting at the Phi Kappa Psi house -

"Hide your kids, hide your wife"?
"UVA stop hiding rape"
"Burn the frat houses down!"
"No More Impunity"

impunity - noun: impunity

"exemption from punishment or freedom from the injurious consequences of an action."

Janet

Maybe I can borrow the "No More Impunity" sign & go stand in front of the Rolling Stone office or Erdely's house or "Jackie's" house?

It doesn't seem right to give "lying about rape" some special dispensation.

or I guess we can just add that to the list -
women can lie about rape.
minorities can be racists.
illegals can break the law.

Why expose anyone who has broken the law or lied....it is embarrassing for every one of those people.

anonamom

Perfect illustration of how this "college rape culture" narrative has completely backfired--society has long given rape victims support via certain courtesies, not naming them in the media being one.

Now we have kind, caring mothers arguing that because women can lie about rape, they should be named.

When society no longer has any common ground for morality, can there be any morality?

Extraneus

More Kurtz:

Now the rest of Erdely’s work is starting to be scrutinized. In a 2012 piece for Rolling Stone, Erdely wrote of a series of suicides in a Minnesota community among teenagers who were gay or perceived to be gay. She begins a girl named Brittany, who was taunted as a “dyke” and later killed herself. But then there is this:

“Like many 13-year-olds, Brittany knew seventh grade was a living hell. But what she didn't know was that she was caught in the crossfire of a culture war being waged by local evangelicals inspired by their high-profile congressional representative Michele Bachmann, who graduated from Anoka High School and, until recently, was a member of one of the most conservative churches in the area. When Christian activists who considered gays an abomination forced a measure through the school board forbidding the discussion of homosexuality in the district's public schools, kids like Brittany were unknowingly thrust into the heart of a clash that was about to become intertwined with tragedy.”

I am not interested in the accuser's name. Too few facts, a bit too much narrative on both sides of this one. An end to the Title IX railroading of young men w/o any due process and liability for "journalist" enablers of the railroading should be the focus. (Or foci).

Regarding your 6:25, oh come on! What good is done by emblazoning the name of a messed up 20-year old all over the place, when it appears that she (i) sounds like she was sexually assaulted by someone and (ii) was definitely used by a reporter looking for a story to fit her narrative.

Jackie's story has put some institutions through middling heck, but she has not really messed up anybody's life. (Unlike celeberity wolf-caller Lena Dunham, who needs some legal jeapordy in her life.) She was at best ambivalent about having the tale she told nationally distributed. The minute her name hits Google -- her life is gone for a very, very long time. The actions of a traumatized 20-year old do not rate this.

Empathy is not a respected emotion in these precincts, but you might want to try it just this once.

Janet

Maybe we can match up some of the advocacy articles with TV show story lines...

I remember one where a Christian group stoned another student to death. When did that episode run?

Captain Hate

I am not linking to it in the belief that women who say they are victims of sexual assault deserve to be granted anonymity.

Why do they "deserve" this?

Solidarity among lying c*nts.

Miss Marple

My opinion is that the woman "Jackie" is mentally fragile and should not be harassed. The cause of her mental damage should be left to a good psychiatrist and I for sure am not one.

The rightful villains in this are Rolling Stone's editors, the reporter, the university president, and a bunch of people in the media who are eager to find stories to fit the narrative, regardless of who they damage in the process.

Another bob

Appalled, I think the problem is you're begging the question.

Indeed, Erdely seems to be a bit of a sick puppy herself, what with her apparent obsession for telling victim stories that are, um, awkwardly-sourced. Should we empathize with her and let her off the hook?

How exactly do you know that "Jackie" hasn't messed up anyone's life? Do you not think there are people (possibly Erdely and the rape hustler, they seem to be too busy with something to bother defending themselves from the criticisms right now) looking for something to pin on the frat boys in order to take the heat off?

Unfortunately Erdely and "Jackie" have poisoned the well. Even if something did happen, they now have no credibility.

This situation has every hallmark of bullshit. People are allowed to note that.

Miss Marple

Captain Hate,

Shame on you.

If I remember correctly, Jacki'e name was given to the reporter by someone in her group. She wasn't peddling the story.

The reporter talked her into making the story public. The reporter did not do any fact-checking, as far as I can tell.

The proper person to be angry with is the reporter and her editors, as well as those in the media who jumped on the bandwagon.

Captain Hate

Regarding your 6:25, oh come on! What good is done by emblazoning the name of a messed up 20-year old all over the place, when it appears that she (i) sounds like she was sexually assaulted by someone and (ii) was definitely used by a reporter looking for a story to fit her narrative.

Maybe not in this case but newspapers regularly print the name of the accused in rape cases while granting anonymity for the accuser. This holds true even if the verdict is that nothing happened. The accused is still IDd and there will always be people who believed that "something happened" which was proved here in the Duke rape case.

This has bothered me for a long time.

Another bob

Henry, can't really disagree. But isn't exposure of the lies and the harm of the kangaroo courts and lying media needed?

Janet

Well apparently "Jackie" was telling her story around campus. How is that okay?

Go to the police! should be the lesson. If the leftist groups spent half their time & resources on teaching girls to GO TO THE POLICE and press charges, instead of running false victim stories & excusing lying & blaming a constructed "rape culture" meme...they could actually help women.

Captain Hate

Sorry Miss Marple but people who let themselves be used are not my friends, mentally ill or otherwise. There are a significant number of mistakes that were made by her to bring us to this point and she took the wrong fork in the road every single time. To hell with her.

Miss Marple

Suppose there is someone who is absolutely convinced he was abducted by aliens. He doesn't tell many people except a group therapy class he is in because of his PTSD.

Now suppose someone who is looking for a story to PROVE that the government is hiding information about UFO's is given this guy's name by someone in the group, perhaps someone who thinks he gets too much talking time about his experience.

So the guy is contacted by the reporter and is talked into telling his story for a wider audience, even though he knows some of the details sound iffy. He asks that his identity be protected because he has a job.

So the story is reported in a widely-circulated magazine and the author goes on Coast-to-Coast to talk about it. Only then we find out that the night the supposed abduction took place was a heavy rainstorm, not a moonlit night; that the place of the abduction was over 500 miles from where the guy was seen partying with friends by credible witnesses; and there is zero evidence that the guy was physically damaged in any way, unlike what he claims.

So a story has been printed that falls apart because someone obviously mentally off has been coerced into putting what had been a private story/delusion/fantasy into the public eye.

The person at fault is the reporter and the person who gave his name to the reporter, not the mentally damaged person, whose identity should not be revealed in a battle between UFO believers and the government.

Miss Marple

How do we know she was telling this story around campus?

Captain Hate

Other practical problem is campus police are frequently little better than the kangaroo courts.

I don't think I'd put it this way. Campus police are not the problem imo so much as campus culture which runs roughshod over the rights of the accused and in every case is enabled by the school administration. F.I.R.E. has been fighting this for a long time.

Janet

This has bothered me for a long time.

Me too, Captain.
That story of the guy at the Naval Academy really got me. 2 drunk young people...& the girl is protected while he is exposed.
Why is that?
Was there any worry that he would kill himself?

Maybe it is just me. Even in episodes of COPS I don't understand why drunk, rough women are given such deferential treatment.

That said...I agree that the big story should be exposing advocacy journalism & the lies of Sabrina Rubin Erdely.

Miss Marple

In my opinion, the left is itching to paint us as people who have zero sympathy for rape or mentally ill people.

I still say go after the reporter as a user of fragile people. She has a history of these types of stories and has made quite a nice living from using people like Jackie.

Captain Hate

In my opinion, the left is itching to paint us as people who have zero sympathy for rape or mentally ill people.

They'll say that about us anyway so it's not like they don't traffic in baseless claims. I can point to posts I've made recently expressing outrage over the treatment of the Central Park pervs to show my solidarity with real victims of rape. I think the entire left is mentally ill so they might be on to something there...

Another bob

MM, the left will do that regardless of what the right does or what the truth is. They made up the "rape culture" lie, right?

Captain Hate

Furthermore to make a principled stand you have to be ready to be on the receiving end of scurrilous attacks against you. This is a lesson the GOPe hides cowering from.

Miss Marple

Well, all I can tell you is that our enemies are in the press, not in the people who are in the margins because of whatever damage they have suffered however it happened.

To stop this type of stuff, you have to go after those who practice it. Go after the reporter, the publication, and the university which doesn't operate under any sort of due process.

Miss Marple

Captain Hate,

I assume you are therefore willing to see us spend another year or two putting up with the War on Women BS. Why do you want to step into that trap?

Buckeye

Sabrina Rubin Erdely sounds like she has a serious mental illness.

Therefore we should back off, as we might unfairly traumatize the fragile little thing?

Miss Marple

OK, I see speaking about this is getting me nowhere.

Buckye, if you can't see the difference between the two then I cannot discuss this with you.

Rather than continuing this argument, I am going to go pack boxes for shipping.

Captain Hate

The only way to eliminate baseless claims is to take them on directly. I don't even think most of the country believes this War on Women crap but the GOPe could have eliminated it by forcefully pointing out some of the hypocrisy of the party of Slick and Chappaquiddick. Instead we have bland tomato cans like Romney who want to stay 'above it all' and leave it hanging out there. It's hard to win a culture war with a bunch of surrender monkeys.

Captain Hate

Welp I've ended up talking about this non issue instead of concentrating on real problems that 404 has caused the world at large.

I ask again: Why do women accusers of sexual assault "deserve" to remain anonymous?

Are there any criminal accusations that men can make while having their identities scrupulously protected by the press?

Seriously, what is this business of "deserving" to remain anonymous? It sounds like a moral value of some sort, and is obviously easy to abuse. What is the basis for it?

Jane, We spent a few days with my daughter and the Mayo Clinic doctors, saw a few friends, ate too much and spent too much but we're glad to be back home now. Thanks!
