The New England Patriots "DeflateGate" has now met "The Big bang Theory":
N.F.L. Investigator Seeks to Consult Columbia Physicist Over Patriots’ Deflated Footballs
A law firm hired by the N.F.L. to investigatefootballs used by the New England Patriots has formally asked the Columbia University physics department for help in understanding how weather and temperature could affect the pressure in footballs, according to a summary of the communication obtained by The New York Times.
Oh, brother.
Let me chime in. The temperature change from room temperature to the on-field temperature should not be enough to have the balls deflate from 12.5 psi to 10.5 psi. And one might presume that the balls used by the Colts, which did not deflate, were subjected to the same temperature change.
Some bright lights have suggested that the Patriots' footballs were inflated in a sauna and measured by the refs before they had cooled. Hmm, the refs didn't notice the footballs were very hot? Whatever.
If I were an imaginative physicist, I would suggest a slicker ploy - inflate the Patriots' footballs with a mix of helium and oxygen or regular air (deep sea divers are familiar with this, so we are not talking about science-fiction levels of availability). As every party-goer knows, helium leaks from balloons much more quickly than regular air, for a perfectly logical scientific reason - the helium atom is smaller.
Obviously, a bit of trial and error would have been needed to find the optimal helium/air mix given the desired leakage rate and the elapsed time before (and during) the game. But if, for exammple, the original mix was fifteen percent percent helium and all of the helium escaped a football bladder in the two hours between testing and game-time, then the Patriots footballs would be at roughly 100 percent regular air at 10.5 psi come game time.
OK, I am not really serious. A simpler answer is that the "person of interest" who disappeared into the men's room for ninety seconds with the bag of footballs stuck an inflation/deflation pin in each ball and used a well-developed sense of feel to check for the new, lower pressure. The big thing that theory has going for it is that it is slightly less ludicrous than the helium idea.
My guess - the refs never checked the pressure except by feel, and now everyone is covering up.
As to how the refs managed to spot the ball before every Patriots play without noticing anything amiss, well, I am now certain that I will never be smart enough to be an NFL fan.
YAY! TM'S on the case!!!

The temperature change from room temperature to the on-field temperature should not be enough to have the balls deflate from 12.5 psi to 10.5 psi.
TM,
There have been several reports that the actual deflation rate was closer to 1 psi or under, and not 2 psi.

Second set of balls concealed in the men's room. Much quicker and more fool-proof than trying to deflate them in 90 seconds.
Of course, assuming that it actually happened.
Could be that they just present the underinflated balls and the refs don't really check.
Or that none of this happened. Whatever.

Occam's Razor tells me that either (1) the TommiePats did fiddle with the balls as they have over the course of several seasons, or (2) the lazy refs didn't run each of the balls through their fancy pants electric pump with regulated pressure gauge, and the NFL is slow walking things to not reveal that embasrassing detail. I put Occam #1 as the far higher probability... and the fact that I detest Kraft/Belicheat/TommieBoy has nothing to do with it, you can all trust my judgment in this matter.

Source for 2 psi decrease?
If the balls were inflated with ninety-degree air moments before they were presented to the refs. It seems unlikely that the surface temperature would increase noticeably by the time of the testing.
Someone yesterday posted a clip of the efs testing balls before an NFL game. They were using pressure gauges, and after testing they would put that crew's symbol (in this case the letter L) on the ball with a magic marker.

The Mike Walsh piece is spot on regarding coruption history and where we wound up. I grew up in NYC during a period when the 'reformers' were on top, but Tammany never recovered, because it was also the period of Great Economic Decline in NYC, so OPM ran out, plus the private employer marks moved to Morris Cty NJ, Fairfield CT or Ga, so there was no $$ of any kind for honest graft. A new kind of corruption developed in the 80s-90s, and that corruption is what we see in the headlines now. As Walsh says, it is 'legal corruption', that luckily violates federal laws. BTW, the Silvers and the Cuomos who are taking the fall now? They were the 'goo gov' types in the 80s. As Glenn Reynolds says, we have the worst political class evah. BTW I see where Walsh politely call the Free Shite Army the "Dependency Class". I like our phrase better.

Here's a calamity!
Budget ax falls on a bit of Alaskana, the bars on Alaska state ferries
...the state Department of Transportation and Public Facilities says it can no longer afford to keep subsidizing money-losing ferry bars, and will close them this year.
So they're going to shut down the saloons on all our state FerryBoats! Gad.
Apparently we lose at least $100,000 on each individual Bar on each Ferryboat, and the 2 new ferries now under construction will not include bars.
"The loss of bars will be unpopular" says Representative so and so from Ketchikan.
Most ferry travelers have seen the packed bars on Alaska ferries -- so why are they losing money? Good Question.
And here's the Sad Answer: the vessels providing essential day-to-day service are often less than half-full and the bars get little business.
Bummer:( I was thinking that after I retired from my current gig I was going to become a Bartender on a Ferryboat and yack passengers ears off---plus the Ferryboat Bartenders Union has the coolest name for a Union in History
The bartenders who work on the vessels are members of the Inlandboatmen's Union of the Pacific.
Oh well. As the Buddha said in his last words when he passed into the Nirvana of un-rebirth, "Decay Is Inherent in All Corporate Things."

daddy - many thanks for your thoughtful response to my question in the last thread ("what is your take on why the Progs believe that collectively blaming Muslims is "the biggest" error we could make??")
as usual, i agree with almost everything you write. There's an important subtlety to the 'straw man' issue, though, in that Kerry and his ilk (either slyly or inadvertently) conflate "blaming" all muslims for each act committed by an islamic terrorist with assigning some "responsibility" to all practicing muslims for that act.
Murdoch recently did the latter and while he took plenty of heat for it, I think he was right to do so because making all muslims "responsible" for the carnage done in the name of their religion - while imprecise - is still far closer to the truth that the orchard of Islam is the real problem here, rather than sundry bad apples.
In my view, Islam is not a "religion" as contemplated by the architects of the First Amendment, nor worthy of protection from Government infringement thereby.

To be honest with you, I don't see how the NFL can prove one way or another that the defalted balls were a deliberate action on the part of the Patriots. They can 'assume' but proving that someone knowingly let the air out for an advantage without a telling confession by the actual doer. I don't think there is anyway unless CSI Miami has it all figured out.

My only interest in the DeflateGate business is that Tommie Boy Brady is exposed as a cheating liar. I 'll stipulate that the psi had no bearing on the outcome of the Colts game, and the psi since '08 has had no causal connection to Pats turnovers. But my strong belief is that Tommie Boy wanted his balls a certain way and he used some equipment guys to make it happen, in a deliberate and purposeful violation of NFL rules. Why? Tommie Boys likes his balls a certain way and Tommie Boy gets what he wants. Fine, all's fair, catch me if you can. But as Michael Corleone said to Carlo Rizzi "Don't lie to me... it insults my intelligence... and makes me angry." Brady went out to his DeflateGate presser and shamelessly lied IMO.

Wash Times:
The congressional Democrats involved in writing the Affordable Care Act told the Supreme Court on Wednesday that they intended for consumers in all states to be eligible for subsidies, and they argue that the law they drafted reflects that intention.
Opponents have challenged the Obama administration’s enforcement of the law, arguing that it only allows subsidies to be paid in states that set up their own exchanges, but not to customers in most of the country who use the federal exchange.
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and their colleagues disputed that in a new brief filed with the Supreme Court Wednesday, saying to leave out some states would defy the entire reason they passed Obamacare — “to make health insurance affordable for all Americans.”
The case rests on language in the law that says subsidies will be paid to those in exchanges “established by the state.”
Mr. Obama’s opponents say that means the federal exchange, which covers the two-thirds of states that refused to set up their own exchanges, are not eligible. The opponents, pointing to comments from some Obamacare defenders, say Congress had intended to use the subsidies as a way to entice states to set up exchanges, rather than leave the job to federal officials.
But the Democratic lawmakers who wrote and passed the law called that argument “so weak” and say they never meant to draw that kind of distinction, saying the law grants subsidies to “applicable taxpayers” and defines them by income, not by geography.

NFL 'cheating' -- Boomer Esiason relayed this story from Parcells. in one of the 49ers - Giants NFC champ games, the 49ers alerted the officials that their headsets weren't working, so by rule the Giants had to shut down theirs until the 49ers' came back on. In those days Bill walsh 'scripted' the first 15 49ers plays. After their 15th play, the 49ers headsets were working so the Giants could turn theirs back on, but they were already behind. After the 49ers won, Parcells asked walsh 'what was up with that'... walsh smiled and said 'gamemanship'. They all look for an edge.

LRA: “chainy”? I don’t even know the yardage marker crew guys.
Why are you so red?

Five minutes. I'm like a potted plant around here.

“The sale of animals online and from pet stores and breeders should be roundly condemned,”
But aborting human beings is perfectly OK.

Lyle, that is one self reference in 4 seconds. Obama only does 1 in 17 seconds...

You're right, henry. Better up my game.

My guess - the refs never checked the pressure except by feel, and now everyone is covering up.
TM, this is crazy. If they tested by feel when they inspected pre-game they would have no idea that 11 of 12 were under the limit at the half. They're just going to make something up so that they can THEN cover it up?

Buckeye-- you see.. there you go again. Using logic on the Left's narratives.

Unless they tested with a gauge at the half. I guess. But then the NFL would never have brought it to light.

Has anyone noticed the uptick in ads for addiction centers over the last few months? That's something that is now covered by ACA, isn't it?

The other tactic Wells has borrowed heavily from Fitz is the sleazy leak through friendly reporters, such as the 90 secs in the bathroom report. IMO the NFL is gunning for Brady/Belicheat, and they'll use whatever means necessary to dirty them up badly over this.

You think? I can't figure it out. Goodell and Kraft being BFFs and watching the game together and all.
All I can figure is that Goodell tells Kraft "hey, we're going to have to do something about this ball thing or the Colts will leak it and it'll be a big mess. So hold tight and we'll do our thing but you'll be all right in the end."
Meanwhile, everyone has something to talk about between the AFC and the SB that does not involve wife beating, murder, DUI, concussions, etc.
