I don't know, Arthur Burns, didn't really come through with flying colors either, it was an old Erdman potboiler, that reminded me how hackneyed policy makers were in the 70s generally,

Ben

Isn't that just removing the tethers from our current predicament, Thomas? Isn't the influence of monied interests a big part of the problem?

NKvirusedand back

Arthur Burns let circumstances control the Fed (LBJ/Dems starting the welfare state and fighting Vietnam simultaneously, plus global competition to USA manufacturing)and yes he spread the kindling for 70s Great Inflation. But IMO the post-Watergate Dem Congress/Miller turned Burns' kindling into a roaring fire of StagFlation.

Thomas Collins

I think Hillary's people have learned, NK, from having their carcass handed to them in the caucus voting. Also, I think Obama's operatives are among the most skillful the country has ever seen at inside baseball campaigning. They have put their community organizing background to good use.

Thomas Collins

I think this is the nub of our disagreement, Ben. I think removing the money exacerbates the problem. Wouldn't you have a better ability to get your ideas considered if you had one or two sugar daddies or sugar mommies financing your efforts than if the public money controlled all? Talk about rationing funds to control ideas. Good luck getting any alternate ideas out there if the Lois Lerners of the world have even more power than they do now.

I think you are making the ideal the enemy of the feasible.

narciso

it's Vizzini all the way, in Croly crib sheet,

NKvirusedand back

The biggest part of the problem in government is the lies our politicians tell us. And since FDR the greatest lies have been told by Progs/faux populists and community organizers. Taxes are 'investments'; public-private 'partnerships'; Soc Sec is solvent and not a Ponzi Scheme;, wealth redistribution is 'fair'; welfare is a 'helping hand'. Lies, all lies, all destructive. The marketplace of voices is the only way to push back against the politicians lies. That's why the Progs want to own the internet, it threatens their monopoly of 'news' using their Legacy Media teammates.

But IMO the post-Watergate Dem Congress/Miller turned Burns' kindling into a roaring fire of StagFlation.

That's my opinion too but there were also some ghastly GOPe half assed measures to deal with it like wage and price controls and WIN buttons that were predictably inept until Reagan took over with the right medicine. I don't think people who didn't live through the seventies and early eighties can appreciate just how bad stagflation was because post Reagan it hasn't nearly been as much of a problem; although the 404 economy has been dismal for other reasons.

You think it's a bridge too far, and I know the devil is in the details.

" Wouldn't you have a better ability to get your ideas considered if you had one or two sugar daddies or sugar mommies financing your efforts than if the public money controlled all?"

If you, as a lawyer feel a Jury selection process is public control of our judicial system, I would have to say I disagree.

I've served on many juries and I have found them to have great common sense and prudence. It would be an astonishing learning curve to implement, but imagine the difference it could make in leading true public servants to the dock. People are fed up with the current system of voting for the same old game. It's not working, is it?

The point I was drawing attention to in NK's 9:05 (and glasater's 11:03 for that matter), is that cronies and crooks will cooperate with each other until the cost of doing so exceeds the cost of going on one's own. Once the gang splits up, values which might have been, shall we say, "managed", tend to assume the value set by a competitive marketplace.

Currencies are no different.

Or oil, commodities, equities...

The Swiss, deciding they had no use for repossessed Greek islands, simply saw that the time had come to unshackle their sound currency from the bloated EUTanic (I forgot Rick's better label) central government which lacks the tools usually owned by central governments. Germany must wonder themselves.

There is that famous alleged JP Morgan quote about "times like these are when capital returns to its rightful owners".

I'm younger than Hillary and I am simply not as smart as I used to be. Maybe I'm the exception, but I can hyperfocus and remember almost anything , but if I'm just going thru the day, I forget all sorts of things I once knew.

We're back on our heads in Deflationland again.

Campaigns are contests on policy questions, Ben. Juries resolve a specific dispute. The two are different animals.

Applying trial rules of evidence to debates and campaign advertisements would stifle debate. However, if you are worried that the facts are not getting out there, you might consider that the development of the so-called conservative blogosphere (I say so-called because many of the economic ideas propounded in conservative blogs have their roots in classical liberalism) has helped along your idea that campaign statements should be subject to more rigorous fact checking.

narciso

well Hillary never made any kind of sense, in '73, '93 (recall the politics of meaning folderall) or '13,

Ben

It wouldn't be a trial environment, more of an interrogatory. The candidate would be allowed an opening statement, then without legal representation, would be questioned by members of the jury. It would be like the jury system wherein, members would be called to service randomly, and would be vetted the same by the jurist as to personal acquaintance to candidate, or if they have issues that might tilt toward or away from the candidate. A closing statement would also be available.

narciso

the same goes for the Razorback Borgia, there isn't enough carp in Yokohama bay,
to cover all the idiocies from the '92 campaign,

Thomas Collins

I must concede, Ben, that a jury trial type process would have been intriguing in the Obama Administration's campaign to pass ObamaCare. Imagine Pelosi being put on cross examination when she testified about ObamaCare being a cost savings vehicle. Imagine Obama spokescritters being cross examined on the "if you like your doctor and health plan, you can keep them" trope.

Thomas Collins

I wouldn't expand jury duty, Ben, but one could structure debates as you have outlined. I'm sure many members of the general public would volunteer to be the questioners. Your approach would be a lot better than the laughable town hall forums that are conducted at the POTUS campaign level. But having what I will call Ben Debates is still consistent with expanding private parties' ability to finance campaigns.

narciso

No, he wants a grand jury, like the kangaroo court that tried Stevens something else entirely,

Captain Hate

there isn't enough carp in Yokohama bay,

Ugh, between Slick's obvious whoppers and Poppy's incredible ineptness on the campaign, Perot jumped into the vacuum to give voters a chance to vote for somebody who wouldn't lie to them or vomit in their laps.

Ben

"I wouldn't expand jury duty, Ben, but one could structure debates as you have outlined."

That would be much better than what we have if you keep the cameras and the public pandering out. It shouldn't be another dog-and-pony show; more of the same.

Ben

" Imagine Pelosi being put on cross examination when she testified about ObamaCare being a cost savings vehicle."

I can see many interesting scenarios. The weak link would be in the way our media reports.

I have no idea how the DHS budget standoff will play out, but if the Repubs play it smart as Border Security, the persuadables will really be pissed at Obummer. Unlike september 13 the Congress is sending a budget to keep DHS opoen to do the things the Congress and voters want it to do. Obummer would be the petulant POS who refuses to sign the border/anti-terrorist security unless he gets what he wants. Very different than '13. PLUS if the Repubs are smart, they will link this to the Budget Big Picture, about pro growth job creation, plus their priciples for illegal/legal immigration. Or, perhaps more appropriately, the Turkish Bell

The Angelus is not identical to the "Turkish bell" ordered by Pope Calixtus III (1455–58) in 1456, who asked for a long midday bell ringing and prayer for protection against the Turkish invasions of his time. In his 1956 Apostolic Letter Dum Maerenti Animo about the persecution of the Catholic church in Eastern Europe and China, Pope Pius XII recalls the 500th anniversary of the "Turkish bell", a prayer crusade ordered by his predecessors against what they considered to be dangers from the East. He again asks the faithful throughout the World, to pray for the persecuted Church in the East during the mid-day Angelus.

President Obama told Senate Democrats in a private meeting that he plans to "play offense" against the new GOP-controlled Congress, showing little hesitation about clashing with Republicans for the next two years.
