Kidding, oui?
SCORE ONE FOR THE SMART DIPLOMACY: "Voulez vous couchez avec moi?" had to be on the short list of make-up songs, but was maybe too friendly.

Spent the day at Emory. Ekg and echocardiogram and next week a stress test. It appears the complications from my surgery in 2013 have caused my kidneys to go all kung fu on my cardiac system with blood pressure and heart rate and other complications and may be the primary factor in my migraines. The cardio is extremely upset at the outcome and treatment by the other docs. Especially the 8 diff BP drugs on a carousel that have been worthless and may have exasperated the problem.
Can you say lawsuit? Sure you can.

Steph-glad you are at Emory now.
Let me know if I can help but as someone with a slam dunk med mal past where the surgeon simply did not read the MRI on the broken wrist, accused me of wanting narcotics for complaining of the acute pain from the cast that was pulling apart the other broken bones described in the MRI report, an the bone ultimately healed itself necessitating shaving it to stop the rubbing, Ga is a hard state. Even if you know lots of med mal lawyers.
Focus on getting well.

Thanks y'all. It's a pain and it really flared up over Christmas/New Years. One of the latest med attempts caused tingling in my face and arms and I was convinced that since I had a 12 day migraine along with that, I was headed for a TIA. Ick.
Anon: They put a stent in for 3 weeks with an end to end reanastomosis (sp) I think it was and a "yellow pocketbook" for a month. (On the uro-scans it looked to me like they resutured it and added the stent for stabilization) Stent was removed 4 weeks after surgery. BP has been all over the board since. The cardio said that ureter damage causes the kidneys to freak out and the kidneys really control a lot of BP problems. Was never told that by the attending. I've been through every category of BP meds in the last year with my primary phys (statins, beta blockers, ACE inhibitors etc) with no stabilization. Broke down and went to Emory for a real doctor as I was tired of a 'practicing' doctor if you know what I mean. I am not a lab animal. The cardio just shook his head and sighed. Evidently changing meds every 6-8 weeks for BP can cause issues, too. Awesome!

BTW, regarding Kerry's remarks in French. I read, wrrite and speak but not as fluently as Mrs. JiB (native in a way). She broke out in uncontrollable laughter (very much unlike her) listening to Kerry's remarks. She said he sounded like an American high school boy taking his first test in conversational French.
I then told her that he learned his French spending summers at his Mother's ancestral home in France. She surmised correctly that they didn't speak French around him but English and he learned it on his own. Sounds about right to me.

Stephanie, I am sorry to hear about your health problems.
You are always so upbeat no one would ever dream that things have been going wrong.
Take good care of yourself, and, having had several of those stress tests, don't let them push you too far. I've never had a test where a doctor was in the room. I know nurses are great, but a cardiologist in attendance would be comforting. Since I'm on a medication for my heart that won't let it beat as fast as they want (and I'm out of gas and almost falling off the treadmill) last time they slapped me on the table and said they were going to shoot me full of adrenaline to get my heart rate up. I told the nurses, oh no, you don't. They were aghast. One even got angry and told me 'next time you're not going to get away with this.' I just looked at her and scoffed (don't know how to spell the sound.) Anyway, prayers and good luck to you.

They'll get it figured out. Although they said stress test, I'm not sure if that involves the treadmill (ugh) or if they are gonna do it chemically. Right now I can barely get to the mailbox and back without a nap.
I hate, hate, hate Emory though as it is a freaking hash of repurposed buildings, new buildings bolted on at weird places, tunnels, and a general 'how to get lost in three elevator rides' gloop of a design. They do have valet parking though! Luckily the head of cardio there is dad of one of hubbies former pupils.

Stephanie; Best wishes for early recovery,
Not a Doc but some ideas. It's a dynamic system, regulating a balance with a nudge on any imbalance. I've not heard much about kidney regulation, rather hypertension's damage to kidneys.
Have the docs checked the endocrine system, specifically adrenalin levels? If meds change correlates with your episodes, that may be the imbalance of chems sends your adrenalin gland bouncing.

Tonto,
I am just catching up and I must say that whatever your daughter winds up doing, she must never consider becoming a passenger pilot. Passenger pilots in this 9/11 era have to, per the FAA, have the alleyway to the toilet blocked by Flight Attendants while the Cockpit Crew do head calls.
Cargo guys, in contrast, never have to give 2 (s###s) about such nonsense, so we get to get up out of the seat whenever the heck we want to and we can go back in the head and blow as many chunks as possible whenever we want, loud as possible, and we could care squat about if anybody cares about it unless we can get some measure of fun out if it by grossing out the other poor bastard by fartin' in the cockpit. Government studies in future, in my opinion, will show much more urinary/cancer health problems from Passenger Pilots (ala Tycho Brahe) than from Cargo Pilots.
And just to show that we are not all totally gross buggers, tonight we landed in England and my co-pilot is immediately off to Austria to do a 45K Cross Country Ski Race with his US Olympics Team buddies, and hopefully he will be back in time 4 days from now to do our next leg. We also had a jump seater on board besides dash 3 (the coffee bitch in the vernacular) who is off to Ukraine for skiing adventure.
Then I had to escort a 5th co-worker/jumper gal thru Customs who I discovered was a Duke Math/Zoology Major (cute as pie) and she and I had a fine time jabbering all night long with the usual suspects in the Cambridge Hotel Bar. MarkO, you would have loved her (maybe you did:) Anyhow, much fun regardless what you guys are jabbering about. Great stories about camping out 2 days prior for tickets to Duke/Carolina games at Cameron, and alternating holding position in line with various roommates.
Is anybody else drunk yet?

Stephanie, Yike! I know little of the medical stuff, but my brother is an MD and he does not consider the "House" lab rat mode to be good for patients. I worry about cardio (my dad had two heart attacks, as did both grandfathers and several cousins), and have my own kidney issues (blunt force trauma in a soccer game took one out). The kidney to BP connection never occurred to me, but explains much. When I mentioned it to my GP last visit, I got a big aha and furious typing in the charts. His concern was the impact of compromised kidneys on dosages (especially the carp they pump into my veins for bee stings). I hope your cardio guy can see the big picture and sort it out.

Hi Miss M.
What are your planned excursions while you are in the UK?
Totally flexible. We have 94 hours on deck doing whatever we want, so I am thinking maybe the Observatory at Greenwich and possibly a hotel room in London so I can scour the ancient pubs and not have to jump a train back to Cambridge every night. Have some good paperbacks on hand, and my mind is fresh and open for suggestions. My co-worker is very close to Olympic quality cross county skiing, so I am interested in hearing how his race in Austria goes.
Of possible fun, last night in Memphis I got an update from my newly remarried buddy who's wife had just finished a 300 mile sled dog race in her last prep for doing the Iditarod---the Copper Basin 300. She is 57 and her name is Gwynn Bogart. Tough gal, so tho' we all expect her to not win, we are pulling for her to make it to the finish line.
Her hubby showed us some great videos of her coming in exhausted across the Copper Basin race finish-lines just last week, with him there to hug her and take care of the dogs. I don't know her, but he is as fine a boy as possible. I hope my daughters meet a boy as good!
Go Gwynn!
Posted by: daddy | January 16, 2015 at 09:33 PM
Cameron, did a pretty good job at the press conference, although the special pleading for Iran, weakened that somewhat.
Posted by: narciso | January 16, 2015 at 09:38 PM
daddy,
What a great story about Gwynn! I will look her upto see how she does. I am all about us older woen accomplishing things. (Right now I am working on how to pay off my house without loser soon-to-be-ex's help, as I refuse to leave my garden).
If you are in London and have not been to Apsley House (right by Hyde Park) it's a great place. It is the house given to the Duke of Wellington in gratitude for his saving the nation from Napoleon. All sorts of stuff given to him by the kings of Spain and Portugal (including a fantastic art collection which he saved from Napoleon's brother trying to steal it) and a HUGE solid silver centerpiece on the dining room table which is about 6 feet long and has silver camels, palm trees, and other stuff.
In the basement are his boots, his d=saddle, and other military things on display.
It is one of my favorite sites in London.

"It also is customary in the United States to search for obscure contributions made by in-vogue minority groups as a feel-good way of promoting inclusion. One of the earliest Muslims to come to the United States was a 17th-century Egyptian named Norsereddin, who settled in the Catskills and was described by one chronicler as “haughty, morose, unprincipled, cruel and dissipated.” Spurned by the princess of an Indian tribe that had befriended him, he managed through a subterfuge to poison her. He was later run down by the betrayed Indians, who burned him alive. It is not the kind of tale that makes it into politically correct history books."
Those Indians knew what they were doing.

Just for info, I really like the tunes, the music itself, from James Taylor's relatively recent album October Rain, but the lyrics to this particular tune from that album, tho' a gorgeous song "The 4th of July" have this:
Unbelievable you, impossible me, the fool who fell out of the family tree,
the fellow that found the philosopher's stone, deep underground like a dinosaur bone.
Who fell into you at a quarter to two with a tear in your eye for the Fourth of July
for the patriots and the minutemen and the things you believe they believed in then
Such as freedom, and freedom's land and the kingdom of God and the rights of man
with the tiny tin voice of the radio band singing "love must stand,"
love forever and ever must stand and forever must stand.
Don't know whether or not he's mocking or just observing, but regardless, it comes across to me as deprecating the people who died giving us freedom and Liberty and the 4th of July, and i wish i could point to a song of his that indicates him giving a positive nod to "Freedom, Liberty, and The Rights of Man."
Oh well, sweet Baby James. If he is hanging out with John Kerry, then he is a moron. It is 2 morons trying to build up and surf off the creds of the other, with apparently neither smart enough to realize that they are both Beclowning themselves.

First, you have to have less marbles than the other guy to drive a NASCAR at 200+ MPH with 31 other guys on a death trap every Sunday. So, that said. Kurt Busch is nuts.
His lovely is what she says she is - a screen play writer.

Jane, I didn't see your question, and am not sure what the Navy scandal is. There are enough of them nowadays that it is discouraging.

This afternoon I had the honor of attending the funeral and burial of Harry Jaffa (1918-2015) who lived around the corner from us. His three children spoke of life with their father, stories filled with funny, wonderful anecdotes. Jaffa's bicycle was up front and center with a large photo of him with two buddies after bicycling up to the top of Mt. Baldy to the ski lift. Harry lay in his beautiful coffin off to the side as if listening and preparing to skewer anyone who needed it.
After the family followed what seemed like a conservative's dream: Four of Jaffa's former students told of their experiences with a great man and gave us glimpses of Jaffa's contributions to political philosophy, conservatism, and the future of our country. If there were any actual Democrats in attendance, I hope they felt the sting.
Speakers: Edward J. Erler, Thomas G. West, Michael M. Uhlmann and Larry P. Arnn.
Cleoville does not know what a treasure lived here even though Harry Jaffa taught at Claremont Mens College (now Claremont McKenna) and the Claremont Graduate School.

But I feel like I'm just waiting for the next attack. Anyone else feel like that?
It's worse than that for me. I feel like I'm waiting for the next Beslan, on European or American soil. Or both.

Exclusive: Grateful Dead to Reunite
Unfortunately the talent of the Grateful Dead is in fact dead, as in dead, ya' know, like in "dead" dead.

Frau,
Harry Jaffa was a year older than my late father, who died in 1996. Those guys lived through great moments in American history.
Prayers for him and his family.
