I'm glad someone else said that. He was a bit naive in accepting promises from the West who proceeded to stab him in the back.

That's an interesting thought about the Unvirsities wanting the fraternity property. My husband's company hires interns from USC and one applicant was the treasurer from a fraternity. If I remember correctly, I think his resume stated that he was responsible for administering hundreds of thousands of dollars annually from dues (rent). Imagine the $ from all the Greek houses.

GMax-- thanks for the WF quote. Yesterday was yet another SCOTUSD statutory construction decision where Congressional statutory language was literally applied. As I stated here before, the current SCOTUS has been molding the Chevron Doctrine to favor Congressional language over Regulatory Agency overreach to limit agency discretion, and yes CJ Roberts has been a consistent proponent of this development of statutory construction/Chevron. It remains my opinion that Roberts and the 4 other conservatives will apply literal construction and invalidate the Federal Exchanges, and allow Congress to re-write the law. If Breyer had any ethical scrupples he would concur in that. TBD in June.

NK:So I believe myself obligated to not gratuitously publicly mock their beliefs.

That is a cultural level decision. Fine. Go below that to consider a Basics-of-society level decision.

1) If my belief precludes you from expressing a concern about such beliefs, are you obligated not to express your doubts?

2) If my beliefs require my wife to dress according to my beliefs and not hers, are you obligated to support that?

The conversation often fails to distinguish between cultural views at one level and the underlying level’s minimum requirements for behavior at the edge where any two individuals meet.

Of course, NK, I may have offended your beliefs much like displaying M*hammed or P*ss Chr*st may have offended others.

Different cultures must achieve a standard of behavior between them or, failing to achieve understanding, we revert to no rules.

The result, as Mark Steyn and Andrew Stuttaford have been pointing out at National Review, is that when, "the political culture forbids respectable politicians from raising certain topics, then the electorate will turn to unrespectable ones." The respectable Swedish center-right, for instance, has just committed itself to a minority role in a left-wing government until 2022 to keep the Swedish Democrats, an anti-immigration party with neo-Nazi roots, out of office. The SD is now the only party discussing immigration at all in Sweden, however, and so is likely to grow.

Congress can amend budgets and appropriations at will, that doesn't even need 60 Senate votes... subject to POTUS veto. My guess is we will see many budget amendments to FY '15 and the FY '16 budget vetoed, and a gov shutdown when the debt Limit is hit 3/15/15 (the ides of march '15). That would be all good. ASSUMING the repubs use their budget power, that's TBD.

No need to get snotty about it, NK. The point is our skepticism that a CR funding the government through September 2015 will be seriously slashed come January. Is that your prediction? It's not fact-based, much as you would like to claim. We will make a note of this and see if you are correct.

Posted by: jimmyk | December 10, 2014 at 02:10 PM

So yes, you CYA'ed (as always) by backing off an actual prediction. But you ridiculed us for complaining about it on the grounds that it could be revised. You "guessed" that it would be amended, vetoed, with a shutdown in March. So far I'm not seeing evidence of Rs moving in that direction. Are you?

"The Obama administration’s crackdowns on the media are a step towards turning America into a banana republic. In 2009, when Obama took office, the United States ranked 20th in the world in the World Press Freedom Index of Reporters Without Borders — in the same league as Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom. Now it ranks 46th — just after Romania and just before Haiti.

No president is entitled to blindfold the American public. Will the Obama administration succeed in using secrecy and selective prosecutions to prevent Americans from learning of more federal crimes? Regardless of whether one disdains the media, freedom of the press remains one of the most vital safeguards for any semblance of self-government.

Veteran Journos Spill The Beans: Major News Publishers Purposely Spiked Birther News

Last night veteran journalist Diana West appeared on Andrea Shea King's radio show and revealed some stunning details about her time as a syndicated columnist. She noted how when she wrote for The Washington Examiner they refused to run news articles about any of the ongoing court cases challenging Obama's constitutional eligibility.

West also revealed she presented her newspaper editor with evidence related to Obama's identification documents and he refused to publish it out of fear of it being true. She said the newspaper editor didn't want to see the Obama administration fall apart over the birth certificate.

Diana West says people are very afraid of the birther issue.

Radio host Andrea Shea King recalls how when she wrote for Breitbart News she submitted a report on Obama's birth certificate and was told it was policy of Breitbart, Inc. to not publish birther reports. King's comment jives with what former Breitbart News writer Charles Johnson reported last year.

OT:

Jane, the other day you mentioned your bird feeder was more like a squirrel feeder. As PDinDetroit alluded... try filling the feeder with safflower seed. Squirrels really hate that, but the birds love it.

I switched to it this winter and it's a big hit with cardinals, black capped chickadees, all the finches, and nuthatches. I've noticed squirrels have climbed up the feeder pole twice, but when they reach the level of the feeder tray, they change their little rodent minds and just go back down the pole like a fireman sliding down a fire pole.

I do scatter a sunflower/safflower mix on the ground for the ground-scratching birds (juncos, mostly, but also cardinals and -unfortunately- those country pigeons aka mourning doves). The squirrels do pick through it, but they don't destroy anything or scare off the birds.

Safflower is about 2x as expensive as sunflower... but worth it, I think.

Beyond the DHS EO veto, the Repubs won't sequester FY '15 funds as they are happy with the December deals they made - and frankly focusing only on the EO repeal in the FY '15 budget is smart politics, because if they sought to sequester other Prog spending the media would do their whole Repub haters meme. Heh. And vice versa.

There was for a time a really cute chick who would come in and ask to play pool. She was not-completely-inappropriately-but-sometimes-inching-up-to-the-line affectionate with hugs.

But that pretty much came to an end when the guy she brought to the bar on Sunday afternoon got drunk and belligerent over his love of the Eagles (do they have fans who aren't drunk and belligerent?).

(wait, did i tell this story before? not like it'll stop me from telling it again, so pointless question, really)

Anyway, things escalated in his mind and he began issuing threats of a physical nature. Fortunately for him, the Gronk-sized guy in the group he was threatening was chill, and didn't escalate in return.

Which of course only incensed the drunkard even more - to the point where he started issuing threats of a weapons nature.

Poor girl escorted him out to try and talk him down. They went to her car for a bit and then drove off.

Thing is - he had made the threats and there's no way not to take them seriously*. For all we knew he'd come back armed.

So cops were called. They came and took a statement. Drunkard got a visit (I learned later). It was all bluster, but still.

Religious adherents get to make up their own rules about their. I really doubt you or I know more about the modern authoritive Imam texts and Fatwas regarding depictions of their prophet than adherents. Suffice to say I have no interest in promoting the prophet with glorious images celebrating him, so my obvious point was and remains that I would not publish critical or mocking images out of respect for sincere religious belief, that's my personal value system. but people are free in our culture to be gratuitous bigots, and nonviolent bigots have to be protected against murders. But that's a separate issue sbw referenced.

Right, it's a segment of Islam, but not intrinsic to Islam. And those who would kill non-Muslims for making such images another overlapping segment. Right, it's a segment of Islam, but not intrinsic to Islam.

Well yes and no.

There are Sufist Shia who believe in doing this too, to one degree or another. I've also seen images of women on packaging blotted out in Qatar and Kuwait, leaving the children and men alone. This practice is pretty common in a lot of the Islamic Middle East. I don't know that it is specifically a Musselman thing as much as it is a fundamentalist thing.

Mohatmedism, as it is practiced, pretty much makes up the rules as it goes. Even haram food like pork is not always, everywhere, forbidden (Indonesian Musselmen eat wild pig all the time, and I have personally witnessed Afghans scarfing up pepperoni pizza like it was going out of style.)

Bottom line is that Mohatmedism provides the framework to fully realize whatever brand of crazy you want to push, and- particularly the hadiths- provides canon that can be easily interpreted to justify all sorts of bad behavior.

Safflower seems to keep away squirrels, pigeons, grackles, crows, and starlings (which flocks by the thousands in Fall). I feed Nyger (thistle) for Gold Finches, really makes their colors come out. I feed various suet cakes mainly for woodpeckers, have 3-4 different types visiting the feeders. I hear Blue Jays often, but they do not visit the feeders. We have a hunting pair of Sharp-Shinned Hawks that visit the feeders as well, but for the selection of other birds found there.

Wild Birds Unlimited has a "frequent buyer/flyer" program, along with my gift of gab, that saves me about 20% or more (buy on sale, my mom shops there also). Lamar's rewrite represents the Republican position with the argument being over whether to assess (using the word test is incorrect when the means is measuring behavior and has nothing to do with knowledge) every third yesr from 3to 5th grade, 6-8th, and once in high school. Patti Murray and the civil rights groups and Arne Duncan all want it every year because they want all that data that adaptive software needs from a wide variety of students. They also want annual monitoring that the shifts in social justice perspectives and new more collectivist values are occurring as both sides are allowing.

Like WIOA, I suspect I will be sitting watching most of the debate deliberately missing the crucial shifts both parties and governments at all levels want to allow.

I think maybe I will label it what kind of minds are needed for a kleptocracy to get away with as much public loot for as long as possible.

The report, reassessing records from more than 600 tidal gauges, found that readings from 1901-90 had over-estimated the rise in sea levels. Based on revised figures for those years, the acceleration since then was greater than so far assumed.

They really should have revised the figures from 1901 to 1984.

http://www.danielpipes.org/blog/2006/11/the-751-no-go-zones-of-france (2015 update to 2006 article) "... these areas are a bit confusing: potentially dangerous, yes, but in normal times very ordinary looking and with no sense of foreboding. Thus, the term no-go zone does not accurately reflect the situation."

MissM -- I agree with that as well. Gelb is rightly worried that the 'liberal establishment' has lost control to the Obamaniac ProgTards-- they have indeed lost control. So terrible things will now happen, especialy to urban Jews, which is certainly of personal import to Les Gelb.

Hit&Run-- so Harvard study sez 'don't raise the bridge, lower the river'.

Obama, who was seated next to House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) in the meeting, said, ”To the speaker, I just want to point out I said there are going to be some things that we agree on.”

He then reminded everyone that the national championship was basically his idea.”Having a college football playoff is clearly something that we can agree on. I called for it when I came into office.”

Leslie Gelb just emailed me: "Isn't he so dreamy and...oh, I could just eat him with a spoon!"

NK, Cooperrider "teaches" social responsibility and change agency. Some accounting, marketing, and technology fluff fill out the "team building" exercises. All project grades are group based. It is the corporate version of common core.

Every now and then I check out Althouse, mainly for the comments. Today Ann had this gem:

Why did CNN (at the second link) use the word "masterminded"? The 9/11 attacks can be said to have been "masterminded," but the Charlie Hebdo massacre was on the level of Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. (my emphasis)

As narc would say, category error. In fact not even in the same zip code as reality.

US Crude oil production shows absolutely no sign of slowing – despite tumbling rig counts – as this morning’s data shows the US produced 9.19mm barrels/day last week – the most since records began in 1983.

President Obama called for the elimination of billions of dollars in oil industry tax breaks Friday, while stressing that the United States can’t drill its way out of high gas prices.”We can’t just drill our way out of the problem,” Obama said during an energy policy speech in Indiana Friday. “If we’re serious about addressing our energy problems, we’re going to have to do more than drill.”

Or, in O's preferred language, "Sea level created or saved."
