Not "bingo." The Obama Admin's strategy is feckless and misguided, and the excuse that the victims (e.g., Iraqis, Syrians, Ukrainians) aren't doing enough to help themselves is empty spin. Obama (and his spokespuppets) assured us Iraq was stable, didn't need a stay-behind force, and touted it as a demonstration of his foreign policy brilliance:
(Reuters) - President Barack Obama sought on Saturday to cast himself as a strong leader on foreign policy, highlighting a pullout from Iraq and the death of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi as success stories.
It was obvious drivel then . . . and by now it certainly ought to be obvious even to the most ardent partisan.
Temporary Funding for the Department of Homeland Security
February 27, 2015
Vote Notes on Legislation
Vote Notes:
2/27/15: Motion to go to Conference on HR 240: Yes.
2/27/15: H.J. Res 35 – Temporary Funding for the Department of Homeland Security: Yes.
On January 14th, the House voted to adopt HR 240 to fully fund the Department of Homeland Securitywhile forbidding the President from using those funds for his illegal amnesty order. On February 26th, with just one day to avert a shutdown, the Senate finally responded by voting to fund both DHS AND the President’s amnesty. These motions invoke the conference process to resolve the differences between the two houses while extending three week stop-gap funding for DHS to allow these negotiations to take place.
The American people overwhelmingly oppose the President’s amnesty orders; a federal court has already issued an injunction against them; nine Senate Democrats have promised their constituents they would oppose these orders (only six are needed to take up legislation on the Senate floor), and I believe the chances are very good that the President will ultimately be reined in both by legislative and judicial action. These two measures give these dynamics time to work. In my judgment, this is the only course that allows the House to stand its ground in defense of the Constitution while averting a shutdown of DHS.
" ROME (Reuters) - Pope Francis launched a fresh attack on economic injustice on Saturday, condemning the "throw-away culture" of globalization and calling for new ways of thinking about poverty, welfare, employment and society.
In a speech to the association of Italian cooperative movements, he pointed to the "dizzying rise in unemployment" and the problems that existing welfare systems had in meeting healthcare needs."
DoT: Good God, Hit. Who keeps all those stats during every game?
The scoresheet is rather simple. The break has a box where you put Y if a ball is made, a N if no ball is made and F if you scratch (or as is often the case on my breaks the cue ball leaves the table).
Each shot is given a box. A made ball is marked with an X for a striped ball and O for solid. A miss is marked with an M. A foul is marked with an F. A safety is marked with an S. An intentional foul (I hit your ball in to keep you from having a ball to use to get position on a later shot, for example) is marked with an I.
And that's about it. The league takes those scoresheets and loads all the relevant stats to the database.
I have never met the Duchess of Doom. There is a guy in my old APA league who used to be a touring pro. APA has an annual Las Vegas tournament you can qualify for. The captain of the team he's once told me about the time that Allison got on the elevator with them at the Vegas tournament and she and Mahesh just started chatting it up like long lost buds.
Mahesh is the best player I've ever played...although, Johnny Archer comes in town quite often and I've watched him play in some 9-ball tournaments here, but I've never played him (I don't do 9-ball tournaments). Earl Strickland used to play at the bar I now play in, but that was 20 years ago (and the bar was quite different), but he comes in town from time to time as well.
From narc's 01:58pm link above: The most laughable piece of journalism I have read since Ron Fournier's Walker piece.
Bob Jones, columnist for the Oahu-based Midweek, wrote a scathing piece suggesting Gabbard should be challenged in 2016. "I take serious issue when somebody who's done a little non-fighting time in Iraq, and is not a Middle East or Islamic scholar, claims to know better than our President and Secretary of State how to fathom the motivations of terrorists, or how to refer to them beyond the term that best describes them -- terrorists," Jones said.
Bob, my 11y.o. son knows more about Islam and the ME than Lurch and the Champ. But according to you he isn't qualified since he hasn't done any "fighting" over there (yet).
Extraneus: Anyone remember how to go directly to a comment? If someone can remind me, I could try to get the narcisolator to fix the Recent Comments links.
I don't know enough about Allison to know, DoT. I don't see Mahesh any more since changing leagues. But if I ever do see him....I'll ask.
Oddly enough, I was at the bar where we used to play his team last night with mrs hit and run for dinner (a chef at a great local placed move to the bar - and now that bar's food is spectacular for a bar. i highly recommend the x-hot buffalo shrimp hoagie).
Perhaps Lurch was saying that while there are no fewer deaths today, some of them are less violent. /sarc
Ext, I've been away from the desktop since this morning, so haven't had a chance to test drive the latest narcisolator on the indentation. Will get there later today.
The Greek commies will default on the IMF loans before Chicago BKs. The bluff against the Germans just increased the number of Greeks deciding that paying taxes was a suckers play - are the commies going to put the whole population in jail?
I'm curious as to whether Detroit will actually default again prior to Chicago defaulting.
My garage is not attached so I don't have a good explanation of why the temperature in my car is 13 degrees warmer than outside. It consistently is that way but in summer it is cooler.

Captain Hate, re: dashboard temperature reading, on my car (Honda) the initial number is the temperature the car was when engine was turned off last, then it gradually goes to the current reading. Does not factor in wind chill, which is largely the effect of evaporation on one's skin and not applicable to inanimate objects.

Florida! We are in miles long back up on I-75S, must be a terrible accident. I-75N is shut down. Oh no,bad accident northbound, multiple vehicles,a car is hung up on the guardrail.Terrible.
I would prefer a pale horse rampant with crossed reaving axes over the motto "Pray I do not alter it any further." (in Latin) as a fine campaign blason.
Hit, I couldn't get the Recent Comments links to go to any comments with the narcisolator disabled.
After modifying the narcisolator, I was able to get the links working, but since page/100/ is hard-coded, this probably only works if the recent comment is on the last page of the thread.
These changes might have screwed up something else that used to work, though, so if anyone tries the latest update and finds any bugs like that, please let me know.
Weather ahead of you. Has been all day. But now letting up some on the west coast around Brandenton. Be careful. Lots of 80 y.o. Canucks and people from New Jersey driving blind in the raiin.
Glad to hear it, Jimmy! If anyone finds bugs or has other suggestions - especially any javascript programmers (like Rob, hint hint) who can suggest code changes - I'll try to update further.
Accident is five miles north of SR326 (exit 358) traffic barely moving since 3:30 at HWY 27. Emergency vehicles still heading north as of ten minutes ago (5:PM).
I was going pull a quote from it, but it's too hard to pick a small sample to choose from. Seriously sloppy writing/editing (is she pulling stuff from Walker's latest appearance of from "a recent meeting in New York" in her third "paragraph"?)*.
I HATE HATE HATE the insinuation that a Governor should be all up in the business of the federal government particulars.
Do you want a Senator as candidate? Because this is how you get a Senator as a candidate.
A general governing principle is ENOUGH, when you have a person who is truly committed to those principles, as evidenced by his governing by those principles in his tenure as chief executive in the position to which he has been entrusted.
Probe him on his philosophy and principles, question the hell out of him on his experience in governing.
I do not give a shit about whether he knows the particulars of federal legislation jot and tittle.
Otherwise we're dealing with the equivalent of who is the Minister of Economic Development in the country of Hoogivesafukistan.

*Fuck it. I would never, ever claim to have an ounce of editorial talent. But pleeeeeeeeease, this sentence has me adrift at sea.
The takeaway from his speech before this libertarian-leaning crowd came, oddly enough, on foreign policy, when at the close of Walker’s presentation, moderator Frayda Levin, a Club board member and supporter of Kentucky senator Rand Paul in the 2016 race, came charging at him.
Comma, please!
Sentence Diagrammers of JOM to the battle stations!
I think I get it. The takeaway came when Frayda charged him. Um, ok.
Funny, the base gets all fired up about CPAC but give the Club for Growth a pass. They get more money and passi it out better than all the other PACs. Its where the money is and yet, crickets.
I will go with their candidate over the CPAC one unless its Bush, Christie or Huckabee. Who knows.
Yike. Nevermind, I am now scrolling down on the Corner to Eliana's coverage of Cruz's speech at CPAC.
It’s something of an oddity that Cruz, widely considered the 2016 candidate with the most serious intellectual bona fides, and somebody with a long history as a debater and public speaker who eschews podia and prepared texts, relies so heavily on canned lines. Even his acknowledgement of his wife, Heidi, seems to be done by memory. In all of his public appearances, and again tonight, he praises her beauty, brilliance, and business savvy. “She is my best friend in the entire world,” he says, and he said it again tonight.
ZOMG! A politician who gives a speech using lines from other speeches written in the format of a speech to be given!!!!!
What if he uses the same line again in his next speech?!1!?1?1?!?!!?!?
Cast him out! Not good enough! Better Hillary than #cannedlines
Senator Rand Paul wins the CPAC straw poll with 26%....Governor Scott Walker is the runner up with 21%.....Ted Cruz 12%.....Ben Carson 11%....and Governor Jeb Bush takes 5th place with 8%.
Jane brought a point about the millenials who vote for Paul and how they may be a differenial in a POTUS election for the GOP. Does anyone think that if the GOP caters more toward the libertarian base versus the conservative base, that they cge a better candidate for a national electorate?
Not challenging Jane, but its an interesting dynamic in politics that needs discussion. Seeing gay marriage and legalizing pot polls tells me that there may be something there but then I watch a guy like Walker killing the democrat criminal enterprise (uniions are the foot solderies) and I don't know. Honestly.
Very fair criticism, hit. I've worked with high-level execs who often spoke publicly, one in particular. His style was to write out individual thoughts on index cards, one per thought, and arrange these thoughts/cards differently for each talk, including or excluding as appropriate.
Each card contained carefully honed and memorized phrases, which we worked on and he rehearsed.
After years of doing this, he was able to speak very effectively on numerous topics, some quite technical, without reference to the cards. (He still carried them and reviewed their order before speaking, but usually left them in his pocket. Even when he didn't, all he had to do was glance down a few times and flip through them without looking.) As a result of this practice, those who heard him speak often were treated to the same exact phrases multiple times.
I believe this is how it's normally done in politics, too, for those good enough not to need teleprompters.
Some people are obviously more talented, and can come up with great phrases on the fly. I think Rush Limbaugh is one of these people, but even he covers the same thoughts over and over, with only slight variations.
Who, by the way, spoke from a series of cards exactly as Ext describes.
Walker has seemed a little shaky on occasion in the early going, but given his demonstrated inner strength and devotion to principle, I believe he is going to wear very well with the electorate. The Dems have already caught on.
JiB: GOP caters more toward the libertarian base versus the conservative base
In the words of some stoopid-azz President, I reject this false dichotomy.
Cater, no. Target based on a more general understanding of what makes a demographic tick?
Whoa. What if we went in and studied these mysterious "yutes", and come to find out they didn't just want weed, they wanted the federal government off their backs.
Maybe . . . and this could just be crazy talk . . . maybe conservatives could build a message that first hit on freedom from authoritarian control, and eschewed on the whole "libertarians are selfish-adolescents" condescension?
You know, politics.
---------------------------
I'm not saying that there doesn't exist a bunch of "big L" Libertarian "selfish-adolescents" (Paulians 4EVAR!). What I'm saying is, take the LIV libertarian-ish tendencies of the yutes and make a play for them based on the conservative message of Big Government wants to control you.
My goodness when did it become hip for the hip to want the federal government to control the hip????????
With younger people it generally matters if they are more into social issues than fiscal ones. I suspect the fiscal stuff may come to the forefront this year.
I wish the right would simply state the truth - my opinion on gay marriage doesn't matter because it is up to the states. I think Rand Paul said that in his CPAC speech about marajuana.
Clarice, althouse got that DNC email as well. Actually mild compared to the recall, and even compared to what the union goons are carrying as they march around the Capitol today. Look at the bozo hope & change poster and it becomes clear the DNC has two depiction modes: good fascist and bad fascist. Once Walker is officially running that email will have a small mustache (like in the recall).
Jane, the "nonpartisan ethics organization" Citizens for Responsibilty and Ethics is a Soros / SEIU front. A simple rule works well, "nonpartisan=Soros."
What if Rand is an imperfect vehicle, but the voters he attracts are get-able for the GOP. But what if getting them necessitated not trashing the Paul name?
I fear there are those for whom losing the votes would be worth it.
Gabbard called "mind-boggling" Obama's refusal to associate ISIS with the Muslim religion, even though the terrorist army is emphatic it is enforcing a strict interpretation of Islam.
"[Obama] is completely missing the point of this radical Islamic ideology that’s fueling these people,” she said.
The Army veteran has encountered rough political surf since challenging President Obama.
Her comments have stunned political experts in her home state.
“It is very, very unusual for a junior member in the president's own party to criticize him,” said Colin Moore, assistant professor at the University of Hawaii Department of Political Science. “Especially for someone considered a rising star in the party. This is a serious gamble for her.”
What I want is for our candidate to bring people to the party, not change to attract people. Ronald Reagan sold his style of conservatism and drew people to vote for him, ala Reagan democrats.
What if Rand is an imperfect vehicle, but the voters he attracts are get-able for the GOP. But what if getting them necessitated not trashing the Paul name?
The Ronulans have never been shy about badmouthing anybody who doesn't bow down to Uncle Crazy. They're like a bad case of jock itch; do you let it just fester away and be irritating without killing you or do you say "life's too short to put up with this nonsense"?
FWIW, today's Ecommunist had a column about Walker that did not mention his lack of a college degree. They don't like him, but it is for other reasons.

As if it matters but in 30 minutes or less the CPAC POTUS preference poll will be released. Any bets on who other than Rand Paul will be crowned?
Does anyone know if libertarians are RTW types?

Ok, it may be late June before you see something like this, but still . . . it'll melt sometime...

CH That is weird. Put an old fashioned outdoor thermometer in the garage. See if it and the car agree when you start it.
If drastically different, particularly after car sits overnight, suggests the sensor in the car is faulty.

Marlene, I'm concerned you passed much closer to me than anticipated with nary a word, unless you came down I-95 and have since crossed over to I-75.

Ok, I have a soft spot for Eliana Johson, but her post at the Corner is bizarre.

Um, ok.

I will go with their candidate over the CPAC one unless its Bush, Christie or Huckabee. Who knows.

Posted by: clarice | February 28, 2015 at 05:59 PM
"A general governing principle is ENOUGH"
See, e.g., Ronaldus Maximus.
Who, by the way, spoke from a series of cards exactly as Ext describes.
Walker has seemed a little shaky on occasion in the early going, but given his demonstrated inner strength and devotion to principle, I believe he is going to wear very well with the electorate. The Dems have already caught on.

JiB:
GOP caters more toward the libertarian base versus the conservative base

Posted by: Jane | February 28, 2015 at 06:13 PM
Clarice, althouse got that DNC email as well. Actually mild compared to the recall, and even compared to what the union goons are carrying as they march around the Capitol today. Look at the bozo hope & change poster and it becomes clear the DNC has two depiction modes: good fascist and bad fascist. Once Walker is officially running that email will have a small mustache (like in the recall).

Well, hit, I would agree with all that if it wasn't from the millenial reception of Net Neutrality.

Rand Paul? I guess the attendees weren't bothered as much by that little "Southern Avenger" problem as I am.
(Either Paul knew about Jack Hunter's opinions and thought them acceptable, or he didn't vet this close aide, as he should have.)
As with his father, you really have to wonder about some of the people Rand attracts.

What I want is for our candidate to bring people to the party, not change to attract people. Ronald Reagan sold his style of conservatism and drew people to vote for him, ala Reagan democrats.
Posted by: Swashbuckler Sue | February 28, 2015 at 07:24 PM
I don't want a candidate who "plays" to any particular group. Sell conservatism and the groups will follow.
Posted by: Swashbuckler Sue | February 28, 2015 at 07:26 PM
Unfortunately, the word "conservative" turns off a lot of younger voters, even those who might be attracted tot he principles.
It will have to be sold as "getting the government out of your business," jobs and opportunity, free speech, etc.
