[Guest post by hit and run*]
Glenn Reynolds has an article up in USA Today, encouraging the GOP to take on Big Business.
The Republicans have a real opportunity to connect with voters and win big in 2016. But to do so, they'll have to get over their traditional love for Big Business. Will they be smart enough to do that? The prospects don't look especially bright.
But the fact is that many big businesses are unpopular with the public, aligned with the Democrats, and wide open for attack. And after eight years of the Obama administration's naked cronyism and support of Wall Street even as the middle class has suffered, the opportunities are there.
Reynolds goes on to explain why Hollywood and Silicon Valley are both ripe targets for GOP efforts. But I want to focus on what might be the most throw-away line in his piece:
But I'm not too optimistic. That's because the GOP seems unwilling to criticize Big Business, even those parts of Big Business that hate the GOP and want to destroy it.
The link in Big Business goes to a Politico piece from last November, called "Why Wall Street Loves Hillary".
Oh, you don't say?
Any regular reader of Instapundit is familiar with the tag he has placed on Obama now for several years: President Goldman Sachs. I happen to be the blogger who came up with the Obama/Goldman Sachs logo that Professor Reynolds often uses when using that phrase (I've gotten 31 Instalanches to the original post, but who's counting?).
Anyway, now that I have my opening, I'm going to run through it like running back DeMarco... Well, Tom Maguire is more a New York Football Giants guy, and DeMarco Murray just left my Cowboys for our shared enemy the Eagles, and "Running Back by Committee" doesn't carry the same punch, so let's just say I'm going to run with it.
From the Politico article:
While the finance industry does genuinely hate [Elizabeth] Warren, the big bankers love Clinton, and by and large they badly want her to be president. Many of the rich and powerful in the financial industry—among them, Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman, Tom Nides, a powerful vice chairman at Morgan Stanley, and the heads of JPMorganChase and Bank of America—consider Clinton a pragmatic problem-solver not prone to populist rhetoric. To them, she’s someone who gets the idea that we all benefit if Wall Street and American business thrive. What about her forays into fiery rhetoric? They dismiss it quickly as political maneuvers. None of them think she really means her populism.[...]In June, the biggest donors to the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation met with the Clintons at Goldman Sachs’ headquarters in lower Manhattan for a day-long discussion about the foundation’s goals. Goldman has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Clintons’ foundation, and in October 2013, Hillary Clinton gave two speeches at Goldman. Her usual speaking fee is $200,000, and Goldman is known to be a full payer on the speaking circuit. [...]...as the former U.S. senator from New York, [Hillary Clinton] is well known to many of Goldman’s leaders. They have seen her at numerous Goldman events over the years or at fundraisers in the Hamptons. Blankfein ran into the Clintons in August at a party in the Hamptons at Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein’s house, and there are the many pictures of Blankfein smiling broadly at her side during September’s Clinton Global Initiative in New York. A few weeks later, they spent time together at a dinner celebrating the Goldman Sachs “10,000 Women Initiative,” a Goldman-funded training and education program for female entrepreneurs. Many Goldman employees, especially women, are also excited about the historic potential of the 2016 presidential election since Clinton could become the first female president. “They’re not going to reflexively support any woman, but she’s a woman that seems more or less in sync with the way they think about the world,” says another former Clinton administration official who now works on Wall Street. “And she’s successful, and they just like her.”
Well, I can't quote the whole piece, but let's just say that the author is just getting warmed up.
Which leaves us where? Oh, yes: Goldman Sachs Loves Hillary Clinton. And Hillary Loves them right back.
STRAY THOUGHT: Maybe I need to find a way to tie this back to Hillary's email server, since that's where all the hot action is with Hillary these days. Stories of Hillary's deep ties to Wall Street are old and tired. Kind of like Hillary.
Yes, Jane, the Moakley Federal Courthouse is about 1/2 mile from where I live and about 1/2 mile from where I work. But alas, just as was the case with the Whitey Bulger trial, I probably won't have time to make it over there.

Hi Caro! I am an off and on subscriber to the New Criterion and love Jay's music column. I miss Steyn's theatre column. He is the guy I second most want to meet. VDH is third.
Janet, I hear you. But Obama only gets things done because he has the media blocking for him. We will have them blocking against us. Therefore, our guys need to be 5x as talented/experienced.

Small update: The Hill now says that 367 (not 360) members signed that letter to Obama on Iran.
They have the letter and the signatures, here, so you can check to see if your member signed. (Which I am about to do for DelBene.)
BTW, the letter is quite short and definitely worth reading.

With all these raves about Nordlinger I will give him another look-see. I confess he didn't grab me the first time, but that's based on a very small sample. I did get this from him (quoting the AP report):
As Nordlinger, said, "Marvelous. All honor to him." It's good to see class, whether on the right or the left.

WTF is Michelle doing in Cambodia? Celebrating the 40 year anniversary of the fall of Saigon and the beginning of the Khmer Rouge genocide? That black and white number looks appropriately militaristic/fetishistic.
I can't say what I really think about these people.

Yesteryear’s giants in the Senate on both sides of the aisle—Robert Byrd,Daniel Inouye, Scoop Jackson, Ted Stevens—would not have stood for it. They’d be raising the roof over the usurpation of the Senate’s power by any president, regardless of political party.
Nonsense. At least as regards Dan Inouye. It's popular to revere him because he was a brave warrior who lost his arm fighting gallantly. True and admirable. Politically he ruled Hawaiii from D.C. as a potentate, pulling the strings from afar, and you lived or died as a politician (or businessman/woman) here, based on your subservience to the master. No one understood power and cronyism better than he. Nor practiced it more relentlessly.

Cruz, is getting PALINIZED.
That's a losing strategy. The MSM managed to falsely depict Palin as a lightweight, which they can't possibly pull off with Cruz. Whatever his weaknesses, he's obviously extremely smart, and will make mincemeat of opponents in a debate.

If the CA Republican primary were held tomorrow, from among the putative candidates I would vote for Scott Walker for president. I would do so because I think he is the most conservative candidate who can win the general election.
How about you folks? Whom, and why?
Posted by: Danube on iPad | March 23, 2015 at 10:42 PM
Right you are, GUS. He gives one speech and the dems spoil their undies. I expect it of them, but our side should applaud him and all others who step forward. Our side should *love* each and every candidate who volunteers for the painful duty. Compare and contrast Cruz and Biden who didn't even know the duties of a VP.
Even though Dershowitz called Cruz brilliant, it doesn't count as long as he sounds "funny." Dems from TX are excused because they sing the socialist sirens' songs. CA Gov. Moonbeam, aka Gov. Choo-Choo, called him an ignorant climate denier.
Shouldn't we champion each of our candidates instead of biting off bits of them ourselves? I believe Miss Marple was saying that very thing yesterday. I know I hear Rush saying it today. He, too, said there is no perfect conservative candidate. A(bub) said it here, too, often enough.
Points for your tact, Eric(in Boise).

Porch: It was Kevin Williamson's column on the theater that I believe you meant, not Mark Steyn's. I'm a long-term New Criterion subscriber and always turned to KW first, in case I died before I could get through the issue. Wanted to know I had at least that final pleasure. But now Kevin has moved to CA, alas, and his absence from the NYC theater and New Criterion is an enduring pain in my heart. I'm nuts about him (his writing, of course).

On choosing a Republican presidential candidate: For me, the main criterion will be the candidate's ability to reduce the chances of nuclear war.
I really do think it has become more likely in recent years, and that it is nearly certain that Iran will have nuclear weapons within five years -- and that their neighbors will respond by acquiring them too.
With the possible exception of Rand Paul, every likely Republican candidate would be better on that criterion than any likely Democratic nominee, so I will also be looking at their chances at winning a general election.
To reduce the chances of nuclear war (and to be an effective leader, generally), a president must be a fox as well as a lion, just as old Nick said, so I will be looking hard for brains, as well as the physical attribute that obsesses so many.

Mrs. Obama's clothes were the least offensive part of her trip. After lecturing the Japanese, of all peoples, on the necessity of women's education, she proceeded to Cambodia where providing education to anyone is a major development problem. Most grade schools are on double shifts and in many areas schools run by Europeans and NGOs are trying to make up for the absence of schools and teachers to run them. It isn't just girls who have trouble graduating from high school, it is boys too. To top it off, she expressed "surprised delight" to find out that Cambodian young women were also smart and motivated just like Americans. Then her "mission" was to express disapproval of the human rights situation. Did she do this in the capital, no in the major tourist city, accompanied by Mrs. Hun Sen where she spoke at Hun Sen high school. She made boileplate statements about human rights the very week that the controversial new election laws were passed and the war crimes tribunal was being stymed by the Hun Sen government.

My first post college job was as an adjuster -PI not property. My instinct is that outside adjusters are not worth the $. The offered amount is negotiable. No reason you have to accept the first offer.

I second the suggestion that you do it thru the contractor, and I might even ask the adjuster for a recommendation.

Lyle,
I've never seen that side of Jay. In fact of the entire NR crew I'd say he is the least like that. I'm so sorry to hear that was what you saw.

Good morning!
I try not to get vested in a candidate early because Indiana's primary is in May, which means that usually the choice has been made and Hoosier opinions end up being a formality or a useless effort.
I will vote for whoever gets the GOP nomination, some possibilities receiving more enthusiasm than others.
ANY of them are better than whoever the dems decide to nominate.

Germanwings Airbus crashes in Alps en route Barcelona to Dusseldorf. 142 passengers and 6 crew, little chance for survivors.

I don't think this is how you win the New Hampshire primary.

(A)B, Steyn did write a theater column for the New Criterion, though he wrote other political pieces as well. He and then Brooke Allen preceded Kevin Williamson in that spot.
Here's their online archive of theater pieces - if you scroll down far enough you'll see him from about 1994-2006. He also wrote a great history of the Broadway musical - Broadway Babies Say Goodnight.

Hope you all didn't miss my news reports from Maine,ha. I'm back and this is a little horror (heh) story that happened last week. Gov. Lepage discussed his plan to reduce Maine's state income tax in last week's radio address. He argued that the high income tax drives high income earners to other states, including horror writer Stephen King. King blasted Lepage, saying he is full of sh*t. King said he and Tabitha pay every cent of their Maine income tax. This incident led to a draft Stephen King for governor petition. King said he has no political aspirations. Lepage's office retracted King's name from the transcript.

Follow up to my daughter's "Black Lives Matter at Checkout Too", she's home and will write to the hotel (ht Rich). She echoed Miss Marple's comment about the ugliness of public confrontations. Thanks to all for the thoughts and all the great links on this thread.

The answer is pretty much nothing.
My biggest worry about Jeb is that he doesn't have a warrior's heart.

On the face of this, it's an end run around immigration rules for tech workers, but I am not familiar with the law so I don't know if this is accurate.

Terrible news out of France on the A320 crash in the Alps. 150 on board. Its a Lufthansa sub "low cost" airline. Mrs. JiB flies back on the 31st on Lufthansa. Too say I am concerned is an understatement.
Just hope its not terror.
