ThomasC-- reprint from prior thread:
ThomasC-- egg cracking-- absolutely a big Greek deal when I was growing up. The fix was in if you got the egg that was baked into the bread, that thing was tempered. Also, finding the Quarter in your slice of bread was a big deal.
PS: my daughter is admitted to the National Philosophy Honor Society 4/28. That's a big deal at a Jesuit Univ. Fordham Pres McShane is supposed to show.

OK, thanks, NK, I am going to ask a Greek friend of mine whether there is going to be egg cracking during the upcoming Easter week festivities.
Congrats to your daughter, NK. What is her honors or senior or capstone thesis topic? Is she thinking of going on to grad school in philosophy?

The effect of price on consumption (not "demand") depends on the elasticity of demand for that particular item. For a basic commodity like water, demand is inelastic for many, so the effect of price hiking on consumption is minimal.
Policy begins with goals. If the goal is to satisfy inelastic demand, the solution lies in increasing supply, not hiking price.

No Jesuit presidents please. The current pope should be warning enough. We passed on a top rated Jesuit school after visit day and seeing the social justice poverty B.S. math problem used as an example. I would never hire anyone who attended a Jesuit affiliated school. With "soldiers" like those guys no wonder Jesus ended up the way he did.

--For a basic commodity like water, demand is inelastic for many...--
As a denizen of groundzero of the dirty-hippy movement, I'm surprised at your naivete, exdem.
Many Californians appear able to elasticize it to just about zero, and are happy to do it, they think, as a public service to those around them.
They are mistaken.

Wow-- can't believe my Greek Easter egg and daughter comment generated so much response.
ThomasC-- Her senior thesis is on 'Tolkien' she posits that he wrote allegorically about the Totalitarian Menace from Eastern Europe, despite his denials, because he could not separate himself from his times. I asked her if the'Menace from the East' might not have been Islam. Boy did she bitch at me about that- HATER. The drafts she's shown me are a remarkable bit of critical writing.... except she says nothing of Islam.
Grad School?-- she'll work/nanny for 2 years to make some money and afford a NYC apartment share, so she has time to decide. She has been told, many times, that there is no trust fund, and she'd have to payoff any loans, so chose wisely. Her first 'real' job may be for the NYC Tenement Museum, so she is on a museum career kick right now.

"For a basic commodity like water, demand is inelastic for many,"
And elastic for many: how often do you need to shower? Wash your cae? Water your lawn? What crops do you choose to grow? All these activities are influenced by price.
It is the supply that is almost truly inelastic; the government can't increase the rainfall, or deepen the snowpack. At some poni it becomeseconomical to truck it in, or even desalinate. But otherwise the supply is going to remain constant.
The immrfiate goal is to reduce the consumption of water. The government can do that by raising the price tomorrow. Not much it can do to increase the supply.

Finally, Jesuits: of course they are Nutz, and yes just about any Jesuit priest you meet age 45-65 is gay because of their 70s-80s Seminary culture. But I do admire their teaching commitment, and their audacity. I went to Easter Mass at Fordham Univ Church testerday, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The Homily was Blue on Blue, a Jesuit decrying the bigotry by athesist Society against Christians. I SMILED BROADLY.

I saw The Good Wife last night also, Maryrose. It was pretty fair for a lib show.
In the past I've tweeted them to not be so liberal and they were PO'ing half the country :-)
My husband is a retired dry land wheat farmer. PEople would often ask why he didn't irrigate and grow larger volumes of the grain.
The water table in our part of the county is around 1k feet down and it takes a hell of a lot of juice to pull the water up just for personal consumption let alone irrigating.
Step son in law manages the city water supply and asked him at Easter dinner how our water resources are doing. He said the snow pack is down and they will have to go to the wells somewhat sooner than normal. And that's here in the normally wet Great NW.
My understanding of what the CA farmers do is they have five crops they can rotate into. Cotton, rice, wheat and forget the other two. So they watch the markets and decide what to plant at any given time. Mind you these are the big corporate types not your humble smaller farmer :-)

I think the Red Flops are rated a little better than the Rangers this year, Sue. But the Flops play in a division without a clearly strong team, while the Mariners and Angels are considered serious World Series contenders. So the upshot is that the Red Flops have a significantly better chance of winning the AL East than the Rangers the NL West. However, it's unlikely either team will be popping champagne (or in today's PC times will it be sustainable green tea carrot juice) corks in October.

It seems like it has to be Jeb Jr.'s registration.
Maybe the Bush people want the story to get out there and get more coverage before they tell everyone that Jeb Jr. is legitimately Hispanic. More people will learn it that way than might learn it otherwise.

JiB,
Duke only plays two pale-face this year, three if you count the pale, but solidly AA, sharp-shooting point-guard Tyus Jones.
Duke beat WI by 10 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Dec. 3, but NCAA tourney phenom Dekker was then hobbled with an ankle sprain. The Dekker/Winslow and Kaminsky/Okafor matchups will go slightly towards WI - free throws giving the edge to Kaminsky - but the Duke guards will win the day.
It will be a good game.
Should be a good one.

The scariest part of the Rolling Stone takedown was the part where a universty official said that they were considering pulling Phi Kappa Psi's charter before the article was written, based solely on Jackie's unsubstantiated claim that she waited 8(!) months to bring and her saying that she had 'heard' of two others.

Geez,
So next Election we may have to vote for either the Hispanic, (Jeb Bush), or the American Indian (Elizabeth Warren).
Why the hell is the loony Leadership of this country on both sides ashamed of being a White American? Hell, I'm proud of it.
Jeb Bush sucks. Why should any American vote for anyone who's so uncomfortable in his own skin that they have to lie about it?
Maybe Bush Senior needs to write a tweet to Jeb like Deon Sanders wrote to his wannabe' "Gangster from the Hood" son, and remind Jeb that he's the son of privilege from a big money, White European heritage family like JR Ewing or Richie Rich, instead of some struggling Hispanic wannabe' "La-Raza" illegal immigrant.
