Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

I don't like the name of this thread.

Walter

The Threadherder would be appalled if he knew the lax approach you're taking.

NKvirusedandback

ThomasC-- reprint from prior thread:

ThomasC-- egg cracking-- absolutely a big Greek deal when I was growing up. The fix was in if you got the egg that was baked into the bread, that thing was tempered. Also, finding the Quarter in your slice of bread was a big deal.

PS: my daughter is admitted to the National Philosophy Honor Society 4/28. That's a big deal at a Jesuit Univ. Fordham Pres McShane is supposed to show.

Frau Wachsam

Congratulations to the NK daughter. When will she be ready to run for president? The country needs her.

Frau Einhundertsechsundfuenzig Zentimeter

NK - she's already got the cute, smart and short vote.

Thomas Collins

OK, thanks, NK, I am going to ask a Greek friend of mine whether there is going to be egg cracking during the upcoming Easter week festivities.

Congrats to your daughter, NK. What is her honors or senior or capstone thesis topic? Is she thinking of going on to grad school in philosophy?

exdemocrat

The effect of price on consumption (not "demand") depends on the elasticity of demand for that particular item. For a basic commodity like water, demand is inelastic for many, so the effect of price hiking on consumption is minimal.
Policy begins with goals. If the goal is to satisfy inelastic demand, the solution lies in increasing supply, not hiking price.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--When will she be ready to run for president?--

That's a question for TK not NK. : )

Buckeye

So what are the odds for tonight's game?

Chuy Delacruz

No Jesuit presidents please. The current pope should be warning enough. We passed on a top rated Jesuit school after visit day and seeing the social justice poverty B.S. math problem used as an example. I would never hire anyone who attended a Jesuit affiliated school. With "soldiers" like those guys no wonder Jesus ended up the way he did.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--For a basic commodity like water, demand is inelastic for many...--

As a denizen of groundzero of the dirty-hippy movement, I'm surprised at your naivete, exdem.
Many Californians appear able to elasticize it to just about zero, and are happy to do it, they think, as a public service to those around them.
They are mistaken.

Appalled

The threadhearder is not appalled. I should know.

exdemocrat

human sheep dips are a special case, Ig ;-)

Thomas Collins

My odds, Buckeye, have Duke as the 5.5 point favorite. Kentucky shot its bolt against West Virginia and Notre Dame, and Wisconsin shot its bolt against Kentucky.

I just hope clarice takes the above in good fun and doesn't sic her MMA artist Wolverine on me! :-))

NKvirusedandback

Wow-- can't believe my Greek Easter egg and daughter comment generated so much response.

ThomasC-- Her senior thesis is on 'Tolkien' she posits that he wrote allegorically about the Totalitarian Menace from Eastern Europe, despite his denials, because he could not separate himself from his times. I asked her if the'Menace from the East' might not have been Islam. Boy did she bitch at me about that- HATER. The drafts she's shown me are a remarkable bit of critical writing.... except she says nothing of Islam.

Grad School?-- she'll work/nanny for 2 years to make some money and afford a NYC apartment share, so she has time to decide. She has been told, many times, that there is no trust fund, and she'd have to payoff any loans, so chose wisely. Her first 'real' job may be for the NYC Tenement Museum, so she is on a museum career kick right now.

Danube on iPad

"For a basic commodity like water, demand is inelastic for many,"

And elastic for many: how often do you need to shower? Wash your cae? Water your lawn? What crops do you choose to grow? All these activities are influenced by price.

It is the supply that is almost truly inelastic; the government can't increase the rainfall, or deepen the snowpack. At some poni it becomeseconomical to truck it in, or even desalinate. But otherwise the supply is going to remain constant.

The immrfiate goal is to reduce the consumption of water. The government can do that by raising the price tomorrow. Not much it can do to increase the supply.

MarkO

I can keep my post and my doctor? hit, you rock.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--Not much it can do to increase the supply.--

If you were to drive across the bridge in Rio Vista and saw the Sacramento river brimming nearly full from bank to bank largely to placate a smelt [sounds like a Yiddish insult] you might think otherwise.

NKvirusedandback

Finally, Jesuits: of course they are Nutz, and yes just about any Jesuit priest you meet age 45-65 is gay because of their 70s-80s Seminary culture. But I do admire their teaching commitment, and their audacity. I went to Easter Mass at Fordham Univ Church testerday, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The Homily was Blue on Blue, a Jesuit decrying the bigotry by athesist Society against Christians. I SMILED BROADLY.

maryrose

Marko. Lol
NK Congrats to your daughter on her award and wise course of action for the future
Hit. Thanks for the new thread

NKvirusedandback

Thank you Hit, especially for the last page link.

NKvirusedandback

The 1000 year Central Calif drought is a huge story, and so bad on so many levels.

maryrose

The Good Wife tv show had a wedding planner. Religious and a gay couple lawsuit storyline The last statement by the rich guy funding the decision by the court was three years ago Obama was against gay marriage He said I like to find and stand by individuals who have the courage of their convictions and will. Appeal the courts decision

Jane

Congrats to your daughter NK. BTW I was admitted into a PHD program for political philosophy. Then I got my first post college professional job and they gave me a car and a $9k (or maybe 6k, I forget)salary. I never looked back.

Marlene

NK,congrats to your daughter. When our daughter was in college, her philosophy professor asked her to consider changing her major from politics to philosophy. She laughed and said,my father is not too happy about the politics major,I can't imagine what he'd say about philosophy. :)

maryrose

TC. I fear you are right but I still want Wisconsin to win

Sue

I watched the Ten Commandments last night for the umpteenth gillion time. Charlton Heston was a handsome man.

Sue

TC,

Opening day. Is your team as bad as my team this year?

NKvirusedandback

The Bosox and Yanks have huge variability in how they'll do this year. Both could win 90+ games, both could flameout.

glasater

I saw The Good Wife last night also, Maryrose. It was pretty fair for a lib show.

In the past I've tweeted them to not be so liberal and they were PO'ing half the country :-)

My husband is a retired dry land wheat farmer. PEople would often ask why he didn't irrigate and grow larger volumes of the grain.

The water table in our part of the county is around 1k feet down and it takes a hell of a lot of juice to pull the water up just for personal consumption let alone irrigating.

Step son in law manages the city water supply and asked him at Easter dinner how our water resources are doing. He said the snow pack is down and they will have to go to the wells somewhat sooner than normal. And that's here in the normally wet Great NW.

My understanding of what the CA farmers do is they have five crops they can rotate into. Cotton, rice, wheat and forget the other two. So they watch the markets and decide what to plant at any given time. Mind you these are the big corporate types not your humble smaller farmer :-)

Thomas Collins

I think the Red Flops are rated a little better than the Rangers this year, Sue. But the Flops play in a division without a clearly strong team, while the Mariners and Angels are considered serious World Series contenders. So the upshot is that the Red Flops have a significantly better chance of winning the AL East than the Rangers the NL West. However, it's unlikely either team will be popping champagne (or in today's PC times will it be sustainable green tea carrot juice) corks in October.

Thomas Collins

Wisconsin is the favorite among the real bookies, maryrose. But either way it goes, it won't be a shocker.

Beasts of England

I'd suggest telling your significant other that it's imperative to shower together. To save the world, of course. Hey, I can be an ecologist with the proper motivation...

Captain Hate

I can't believe that more people aren't commenting on how Kentucky's loss provide irrefutable proof of the existence and the power of the Merde Touch. Chairman Merde is pitching a perfect game through seven years, no? Perhaps Vegas can use his unique skills in some Rupert Pupkin-esque talk show where he bullshits about sports and everybody bets the opposite of what he picks.

http://twitchy.com/2015/04/06/first-russia-now-this-urge-to-compare-romneys-ncaa-bracket-to-obamas-is-irresistible/

Mitt picked Wisconsin and duke in the finals.

He's in the 98th percentil with his bracket. Obama is in the 40th.

And somehow, I know this REALLY bothers Obama, way more than Romney being right about Russia.

Beasts of England

Ear Leader's bracket brought me plenty of joy this year. And know - just know - it's gotta drive him bonkers that his well-published picks are bringing derision his way! Poor baby...

Beasts of England

So Mitt gets an A+ and Barky gets an F-? Can this day get any better? I need a shower! ;)

Miss Marple

I thought that little bit of news would cheer a lot of people up!

I just stopped by to catch up. I am now off to research a European porcelain mark.

Sue

However, it's unlikely either team will be popping champagne (or in today's PC times will it be sustainable green tea carrot juice) corks in October.

Was listening to the game Saturday on the radio as I drove home from DFW area. Top of the 9th. Rangers up 4-0 against the Mets. Two outs. You would think they would have won that one, wouldn't you? Nope. Grand slam home run, tied the game. They didn't play extra innings since it was preseason. Gonna be a long summer.

Sue
And somehow, I know this REALLY bothers Obama, way more than Romney being right about Russia.

You know it does. If anyone told him.

Looks like someone's got a case of The Mondays.

I think the POSOTUS' annual failure to predict outcomes of college hoops games pales in comparison to his inability to name a single player from the pro baseball team he's claiming to be a big fan of.

Jane

POSOTUS

Assuming I get it, I like it!

Beasts of England

POSOTUS = thread winner.

Miss Marple

Found by mark! It's Voight Sitzendorf, a manufacturer near Dresden.

And now, for more cheery news:

"Will pursue all available legal action."

The Bosox and Yanks have huge variability in how they'll do this year. Both could win 90+ games, both could flameout.

I hate to say it, but I'm guessing flameout for the Yankees. There are only so many over-the-hill, injury-prone DHs you can field on a team before the bottom falls out.

MarkO

Obama’s just not that smartĀ©

Isn't it grand that his profound lack of education and intelligence is finally finding its way into the nation's understanding.

Only the devout maintain his omniscience.

I have a techie question. I use OUtlook on my work computer, and altho I can get my email on my MAC is there any program or Ap or something that would allow me to to duplicate the "tasks" section of Outlook?

Thanks

POSOTUS: Piece of Merde of the United States ??

Captain Hate

Only the devout maintain his omniscience.

It's an article of faith for those pathetic catamites trying to fill up the huge void in their souls. The Ferret is doubtlessly assuming radio silence to keep word of Romney's success from reaching those humongous windflaps of Stanley Ann's needy little bastard.

Jack is Back! (Crispy bacon and sausage links for me)

It is conceivable that during the game tonight that you could have 10 non-AA players on the floor at the same time. How do you think the Champ would feel then?

Dave (in MA)

I've used it at least 5 or 6 times before. Although I came up with it independently, I guess it was obvious enough that others also did:

Captain Hate

Please make him go away:

http://www.nytimes.com/politics/first-draft/2015/04/06/jeb-bush-listed-himself-as-hispanic-on-voter-form/?_r=0

Dave (in MA)

I was hoping John Ellis Arbusto checked off 'Hispanic' to make a point about the stupidity of tracking such nonsense (plus he speaks Spanish and has Hispanic family members), but apparently he's gone and claimed that he made a boo-boo filling out the form.

clarice

Hell, if people can decide what sex they want to be, why not what ethnicity? Tell your kids to mark Trobriand Islander when they apply to competitive colleges.

Beasts

I'm suspecting that if I was faced with the prospect of taking a shower with YOUR significant other, I would be much more excited about the idea than with mine.

Sure glad Mrs. Buckeye doesn't read this blog.

Miss Marple

Dave,

In politics world, it's apparently better to claim you were too stupid to fill out the form rather than say you were making a point.

Knowing the feds, however, it might be that it is a felony to misrepresent yourself on one of those forms. Who knows?

Mrs. Buckeye

Don't be so sure mister!!

Buckeye

Shit. I'm in trouble now.

Jack is Back! (Crispy bacon and sausage links for me)

I understand it was Jeb, Jr.'s voter registration card and not Big Jeb.

Is that right? If so, he most certainly can list himself as "hispanic".

Buckeye

I think hit is punkin' me.

That was my thought too, Sue. I bet no one did. But hopefully little whiny adolescent narcissist went and looked it up on his own.

Jack is Back! (Crispy bacon and sausage links for me)

CH,

I think you're right. Looks like the reports I was were referring to the Jeb, Jr tweet to his Dad about the "mistake". In any event, a dumb move.

Porchlight

It seems like it has to be Jeb Jr.'s registration.

Maybe the Bush people want the story to get out there and get more coverage before they tell everyone that Jeb Jr. is legitimately Hispanic. More people will learn it that way than might learn it otherwise.

Strawman Cometh

JiB,
Duke only plays two pale-face this year, three if you count the pale, but solidly AA, sharp-shooting point-guard Tyus Jones.
Duke beat WI by 10 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Dec. 3, but NCAA tourney phenom Dekker was then hobbled with an ankle sprain. The Dekker/Winslow and Kaminsky/Okafor matchups will go slightly towards WI - free throws giving the edge to Kaminsky - but the Duke guards will win the day.
It will be a good game.

Should be a good one.

Dave (in MA)
In politics world, it's apparently better to claim you were too stupid to fill out the form rather than say you were making a point.
He is from a state where there's a well-established history of people having difficulty filling in multiple choice voting related documents. He could have accidentally registered to vote as Pat Buchanan.
Thomas Collins

Well, Jeb and Columba have presumably gotten busy or shared a shower on occasion, so there is some Hispanic blood or other thingies mixed in with Jeb.

Porchlight

Fantastic news that Rolling Stone is about to get the carp sued out of it. I agree with clarice, Phi Kappa Psi should sue UVa as well.

lyle

Sue UVA and name that harridan Sullivan woman in it as well.

Miss Marple

Didn't Sullivan ban ALL fraternities, or am I getting confused with a different story?

If she did, then the other fraternities should sue her as well.

Porchlight

Wouldn't UVa have grounds for suing Rolling Stone as well? For pushing the UVa rape culture BS?

anonamom

Buckeye, who do you think she'd pick if offered the choice between Beasts and you?

anonamom

Sullivan closed down all fraternity activities for a period of time--at least from when the story came out in November until Christmas break.

I am amazed that the alums and parents haven't demanded she be fired.

Walter

The scariest part of the Rolling Stone takedown was the part where a universty official said that they were considering pulling Phi Kappa Psi's charter before the article was written, based solely on Jackie's unsubstantiated claim that she waited 8(!) months to bring and her saying that she had 'heard' of two others.

It's ridiculous to think that people could lose their housing because someone who couldn't be bothered to even go through the university process talked off the record to a bureaucrat.

Sometimes I think I am African American. It worked for Fauxcohantas so it should work for me, right?

I need me some of that Pig Sty settlement!

Excellent editorial in the WSJ pointing out that California has collected $22 Billion in bond money for water projects of which most has not been spent on water projects.

They haven't built a new reservoir since the 1960's.

But this year alone they have discharged 2.6 million acre feet above and beyond the smelt level into the Sacramento River because there is no storage north of Sacramento. It's a kleptocracy.

Ben

Re UVA and RS I think it will be hard tp prove malice.

anonamom

Here's to the next 34 Buckeye!

NKvirusedandback

reckless disregard is real good evidence of malice. That skank reporter's facebook and twitter account will be ripe with animus against frats and filled with all sorts of rape culture nonsense. Proving malice might be quite easy.

NKvirusedandback

in any event ... why is a frat a public figure? because RS made them so?

Ben

Holy moly. Reservoirs require rain. Desalination has issues like the amount of power and mountains of salt but living in a coastal desert makes precipitation optimism a foolish use of bond money.

daddy

Geez,

So next Election we may have to vote for either the Hispanic, (Jeb Bush), or the American Indian (Elizabeth Warren).

Why the hell is the loony Leadership of this country on both sides ashamed of being a White American? Hell, I'm proud of it.

Jeb Bush sucks. Why should any American vote for anyone who's so uncomfortable in his own skin that they have to lie about it?

Maybe Bush Senior needs to write a tweet to Jeb like Deon Sanders wrote to his wannabe' "Gangster from the Hood" son, and remind Jeb that he's the son of privilege from a big money, White European heritage family like JR Ewing or Richie Rich, instead of some struggling Hispanic wannabe' "La-Raza" illegal immigrant.

Did I already say Jeb Bush sucks?

Jeb Bush sucks.

Ben

There will be a settlement despite the need of a show trial.

SBW iPadmini

Progs are by definition malicious.

Buckeye

I agree with daddy that Jeb Bush sucks.

Sure hope he isn't the last guy standing after the primaries.

Buckeye
