an interesting note re that most famous line in the film:

This is Orson Welles (1993) quotes Welles: "When the picture came out, the Swiss very nicely pointed out to me that they've never made any cuckoo clocks",[19] as the clocks are native to the German Black Forest. Writer John McPhee pointed out that when the Borgias flourished in Italy, Switzerland was "the most powerful and feared military force in Europe", not the peacefully neutral country that it would later become.[20]

OT: This is today's IRS scandal entry. I found it interesting:

Judicial Watch has just released a new batch of documents forced out of the IRS that show the Obama administration’s scandalous misuse of the IRS to target Tea Party and other conservatives goes far deeper than realized.

Included in the new batch of documents is a February 2012 email from Lois Lerner, who was then head of the IRS’ Exempt Organizations Branch, asking that a special program be set up to “put together some training points to help [IRS staffers] understand the potential pitfalls” of revealing too much information to Congress. Amid the hundreds of released pages, Judicial Watch also found a remarkable Lerner email from 2013 in which she says she is willing to take the blame for not having provided sufficient direction to her underlings on how best to investigate the targeted groups, and then concedes that she “understands why the IRS criteria” leading to targeting of Tea Party groups and other opponents of President Obama “might raise questions.”

In May 2013, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) released an audit revealing the IRS had used “inappropriate criteria” to identify potential political cases. “Early in Calendar Year 2010,” TIGTA wrote, “the IRS began using inappropriate criteria to identify organizations applying for tax-exempt status to (e.g., lists of past and future donors).” The illegal IRS reviews continued for more than 18 months and, TIGTA reported, “delayed processing of targeted groups’ applications” preparing for the 2012 presidential election.”

Not so coincidentally, during this period of time, Lerner emailed former Director of the Office of Rulings and Agreements Holly Paz, attempting to limit information provided by the IRS to Congress about non-profit classifications. ...

Simple Question:

RUBIO AFFIRMS HE’LL END OBAMA’S EXECUTIVE AMNESTY; UNIVISION INTERVIEW MISTRANSLATED

If we have millions of Spanish speakers in the country, yet we're still incapable of properly translating what Marco Rubio said loud and clear on TV in Spanish, how can we have any confidence in what's coming out of the mouths of the Iranian's when only 1 in 10 million in this country speak Farsi?

Thomas Collins

I am not, Jane. I respect the personal discipline needed to run marathons. But it's not a competition in which I am interested (either as a participant or as a spectator). Are you going to any part of it?

Strawman Cometh

Young people look younger every time I turn around, but she looks very young to have a "fair amount of experience" and particularly young to be an IRS supervisor.

Thomas Collins

If she got out of law school in her mid to late twenties, Strawman Cometh, she'd be in her mid to late thirties now.

Last week we learned that the new Maya Angelou stamp had the wrong quote.

That quote is by some White still living authoress, but oh well, par for the Post Office.

The good news though is that Toni Morrison, whom I suspect will get her own stamp once she croaks, just gave us a nice quote that we can be sure is hers:

"I want to see a cop shoot a white unarmed teenager in the back.”

Kumbaya.

Strawman Cometh

Enough said, TC. I wasn't not sure why I involved myself in this discussion. what was my motivation? I now realize I've never wanted to do unto an IRS supervisor as she'd done to me.

Strawman Cometh

It really makes me confirmed in my hermit lifestyle, broken only by mass attendance, family, and the nice people at the Thursday night auction.

Jane

Too far away for me TC (besides if I were headed that way you'd be the first person I'd call.)

I've been going to the marathon since '76. When I lived in Brighton, I used to watch in Brookline in front of a liquor store, in case we ran out. I lived in Newton for a long time so I watched it there. 16
years in Framingham and a couple of years at the finish line. If I don't go I have it on TV. The only moment I missed was the Bombing because I was taking kiwi for a walk.

matt

I'd like to see Toni Morrison shoot Maya Angelou, myself. Her poetry is way overrated. I'd like to see her shoot that damned caged bird too. Thing squawks all night and shits all over the place.

One of the problems we have today is that a lot of the young men choose to look as if they just came off the set of Glee or Tattoo Hell or whatever the trendy show of the week is (or all of the above). Their inauthenticity makes a father dread what my daughters might come home with.

Miss Marple

"I want to see a cop shoot a white unarmed teenager in the back.”

If Ms Morrison wants to see a White unarmed teenager shot in the back, she can look to Duncan Oklahoma, where in the links I posted yesterday the unapologetic bored black perp got life in the slammer.

Of interest, here is new CNN video of his supposed apology to the family. Once again, it's no such thing. He simply says softly and unemotionally to a Channel 9 reporter as he walks by, "I'm sorry."

CNN writes it up this way: After the verdict, Luna appeared to be crying as deputies led him out of the courtroom in handcuffs, whimpering "I'm sorry" to a reporter.

False. That is not what the tape shows. He did not apologize to the dead guys family as NBC reported, and he is not "whimpering". It's just as likely he's saying "I'm sorry" for himself as he is to be saying it to anyone else.

The Australian story yesterday said he did not express remorse during the trial, nor after the sentencing, so I'm not buying the US media's narrative of his perfunctory "I'm sorry" as any sort of apology to the Australian family. If he had wanted to apologize to the Australian Family, he had plenty of opportunities. This doesn't hack it.

And if you're looking for a marvelous example of pride and dignity, just watch that Australian family. They are wonderful. What a lesson in how to behave they give us. They appear at the end of the CNN video.

H&R, can't you root for Tebow for 14 out of 16 games? I'm going to be rooting for Rex Ryan in 14 of 16 games, even though the better the Bills do, the tougher it might be for the Foxborough entry to secure the automatic playoff slot that comes from winning the division.

There, I'm rooting for Tebow all the way. Problem solved.

Perhaps Tebow going to Philly will result in another pledge by DoT to run naked down the Pacific Coast Highway (or whatever road it was) if Tebow gets the Eagles to the Super Bowl. That might make it more of a conundrum for Hit.

Lets play RACE REVIEW!!

As our esteemed blog may recall, last Sunday a 40 year old Milwaukee man was driving his work van on 48th St. A 2 year old boy left a nearby party and darted into the street. He was hit and killed. As the driver of the van went to the childs aid, and as a teenaged relative did like wise.....CONVICTED FELON, RICKY RICARDO CHILES the THIRD, ran to the scene and shot the 40 year old driver and the teen who had come to tot's aid....DEAD. Oooooops a daisy, Mr Chiles THE THIRD shot his own TEEN NEPHEW and the DRIVER dead.
Mr Chiles THE THIRD, took off and later, as the cops closed in, shot himself DEAD in a Chicago area motel.

4 players in our RACE REVIEW drama.

Jimmyk,
Two words....Go Royals.
I went to Terry Park in the mid 70's with my Grandmother to spring training. Hal McRae gave me a bat. Got to meet the team including George Brett and Whitey Herzog after one practice. Awesome day for a 9 year old.

Dave (in MA)

GUS, there was a local sports reporter who, whenever someone who'd left Boston would do something remarkable, he'd say "Why can't we get guys like that?"

GUS

Gentlejim, my beloved Father, died almost 2 years ago. His name was JIM. He was from KC, Liberty Mo to be exact. I have a great George Brett story. My best friend is, like me, a baseball Junkie. He played Centerfield for UW-Milwaukee.
One Christmas, I called the Royals to see about getting a baseball signed by Brett. This was after Brett's retirement, but b4 his hall of fame. I was put in touch with a young lady named Liz. I told her that I was a Brewers fan, and told her why I wanted Mr Brett's autograph. Long and short, this young lady grew up 1 block from my home in Wauwatosa Wisconsin. I knew her next door neighbor. I got the ball signed!!!

GUS

Gentlejim, one more thing. In the early 90's my next door neighbor in my apartment building was a local Radio and TV celeb of sorts. She and I gave Brian McCrae rides about town to bars and restaurants.

GUS

Why can't we get guys like that??

Dave and daddy, the bigger story than Cespedes is how the Tigers snagged Shane Greene (the winning pitcher today) from the hated Yanks, which you both should be happy about. Greene is now 3-0 with a 0.39 ERA (he gave up his first earned run of the season today).

GUS

Thank you gentlejim. I've been blessed.

Here's an interesting bit of Arctic History.

The wreck of the Arctic Exploration ship HMS Erebus, which sank in @1845 while searching for the NorthWest passage across the top of North America, was recently discovered in Canadian waters. This is a 9 minute long video of an Underwater Archeologist floating above the ship and pointing out interesting features of the wreck that will sound familiar to readers of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series.

I believe HMS Erebus was the ship that took Darwin's young botany friend Joseph Hooker down to Antarctica in the early 1840's, and is why Mt Erebus in Antarctica was named Mt Erebus. It became one of the great "long lost mysteries" of the age.

The kelp covers much of the wreck but the archeologist does a good job of explanation in spite of that:

That article is just chock fulla fail. Although DeCommio is surely correct that Rodham is a potentially disasterous choice for the donkeycrats, setting himself up as a sane alternative shows his complete disconnect from reality.

But just as laughable is the series of trap doors that Cuomo keeps falling through. I used to feel sorry for him for marrying that Kennedy whore who slept around on him as much as the lowlife males of the dysfunctional family; but that just illustrated the poor decision making skills which he inherited from his self centered father.

Is there any wonder that those two geniuses teamed up to have the NYC subways running empty throughout a not particularly large snow storm?

In a mature environment, humans often opt—often without much fore- or afterthought—to simply shake off acts of political correctness or incorrectness.

But while today’s college campus is many things, mature it is not. This in itself is a special sort of problem, especially from the standpoint of those who believe that infantilization has set in and America’s teens and twentysomethings are being emotionally disabled by the institutions that surround them.

On the other hand, a strong case can be made that the opposite problem holds sway: Students in educational institutions are there because they’re in fact not ready for the prime time of adult society. Treating them otherwise is to invite disaster, in the form of a string of psychodramas resolvable only by recourse to unending arbitration.

Let's make a point here to say that most STEM studies are just the opposite.

They are geared to go into the largest corporations in the world, where a "career of failure" is not an option.

Practically every engineering school has a professor who is the "designated SOB" .. the guy who makes the students lives as miserable as possible. The professor only relents to give those with a "D" the option of having it converted to an "F" so they can take the course over again.

The reason ... there is no room for 'victims' of "Modern Depression" for those building bridges, security systems and critical infrastructure.

After all, when was the last time the government formed a Blue Ribbon Committee to investigate the failure of a Gender Studies program ?
