The prosecutor in the Freddie Gray death announces what might be hasty, politically motivated charges and a city calms down. For now, at least:
Baltimore’s Mood Shifts From Grim to Elated After Charges Are Announced
...
“It seems like we’re finally getting justice,” said Gary Thornton, 29, who lives in East Baltimore.
Tashira Skinner, his friend, interjected, “It won’t be justice until they say guilty.”
There is that pesky matter of trials and convictions. The Times follows up on the challenges facing the prosecutor:
Baltimore Prosecutor Faces National History of Police Acquittals
With an unexpectedly speedy and sweeping announcement on Friday of homicide and abuse-of-power charges against six police officers in the death of Freddie Gray, Baltimore’s chief prosecutor sent an unmistakable signal that the days when police misconduct drew a wrist slap are over.
It was a bold gesture, experts say — and a risky one. For the pledge may be an empty gesture unless prosecutors secure convictions in Mr. Gray’s death.
They say "empty gesture", I say "over-reaching, pandering disaster"; time will tell. At some point actual evidence and facts may be important, but I would guess that acquittals would inflame the city and (further) de-legitimize the criminal justice system in the eyes of many.
Both history and the circumstances of the case unveiled on Friday hint that it will be anything but easy. Brutality cases against police officers are notoriously difficult to win, and much about the case, including the evidence against the officers and their defense, remains unknown.
I don't know much about the evidence either, but if the police officers really did find Freddie Gray unconscious and unresponsive in the back of the van without seeking immediate medical intervention, then a "reckless disregard" type charge seems supportable. This is from the NY Times timeline - Stop 4 was the last stop before the van went to the Western District police station:
Stop No. 4: [Prosecutor] Ms. Mosby said Officer Goodson was met here by Officers Nero, Miller and Porter. Sgt. Alicia D. White and Officers Porter and Goodson observed “Mr. Gray unresponsive on the floor,” Ms. Mosby said. Sergeant White spoke to the back of Mr. Gray’s head, and he did not respond. “Despite Mr. Gray’s seriously deteriorating medical condition, no medical assistance was rendered or summoned for Mr. Gray at that time by any officer,” Ms. Mosby said.
That said, the idea of "false imprisonment" charges based on the absence of a legitimate basis for arrest seems like a stretch. My presumption is that there is (or ought to be) some sort of a good faith exception. A key part of the dispute here seems to be whether Mr. Gray's knife was legal or not. Presumably the defense will argue that either (a) the knife was in fact illegal (or a parole violation?), or (b) the knife was close enough to illegal that the officers made a good faith mistake. Attorney Andrew Branca at Legal Insurrection has lots more:
Arrests often go uncharged, and charges are often dismissed, and defendants are even acquitted at trial, often based upon a later conclusion that the underlying facts which suggested a crime are untrue or mistaken. None of these outcomes makes the initial arrest illegal.
When an officer makes an arrest based on an articulable statement of probable cause, that arrest becomes illegal only if the officer knew or reasonably should have known that no crime had, in fact, been committed.
In short, police are entitled to make reasonable mistakes, and such a reasonable mistake does not make the arrest illegal.
Such a mistake may, of course, make further prosecution of the offense impractical or outright unjust. But that’s a completely different matter than whether an arrest was unlawful.
One important lesson has been learned here - let's cut back to the initial Times coverage describing the charges:
Standing on a nearby street corner, Renee James, 48, said, “There’s no need to go tear up the city no more.”
Her friend Antoinnette White, 53, said of the riot: “Hurting innocent people was nonsense. I cried.”
But Abdullah Moaney, 53, an information technology worker from East Baltimore, said that “peace has lost its credibility.” Seeking to justify the violence that broke out Monday, he said that “if it wasn’t for the riot,” charges would not have been filed.
Muslims have figured it out, and now some Americans are figuring it out - non-violence is for patsies, and the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
I hope the riots have ended O'Malley's POTUS chances. One clear winner is the Fraternal Order of Police, which every LE officer in America should join asap, as vindictive, aggrieved Mosbys everywhere are eager to make a name for themselves. I'm looking forward to the inevitable cage-match between MS "It's our time" Mosby and Mayor "It's just property" R-B for supremacy.

Does area need to be equal between the two new countries? I say we pack them in tight like they seem to prefer their subjects. That way all of H's villagers can be close to help raise one another. I don't have a link, but the county-by-county map after the 2014 election was very sparsely dotted with blue in the expected locales. Plenty of land mass to choose from for reality-based America.
The most important factor in any division, though, is keeping the good golf courses. That, unfortunately, will be a real problem. With only one exception, Augusta National, the other top-ten tracks are deep blue. Dang it!!

While "failing" Americans try to raise our kids right, save to buy a home, save for our kids education, work hard, .... the left is constantly peddling their poison - lust, envy, sloth,...to OUR kids too. All they do is make our lives harder.
Instead of listening to leftists piss & moan about how lousy America is...How bout Baltimore let itself be the ultimate leftist city & let's see how all their great ideas work.
...legalize pot, hell legalize all drugs. Close down the "evil" police force. Start bringing all the illegals there, since the left tells us that is a positive thing. Raise the minimum wage to 20...no...50 bucks an hour & let us see how many businesses open there. Put an abortion "clinic" on every street corner & let them operate with NO regulations.
Give out needles to all drug users. Ban cars & make everyone walk or ride a bike. Outlaw the use of fossil fuels...only solar panels are allowed in "green" Baltimore. Shut down churches. Build more mosques. Stop immunizations. Stop selling meat & make the people have vegan or vegetarian diets. Only build tiny houses out of recycled "green" materials. Peddle sex, sex, sex at every opportunity as the #1 most important thing in all of life. Sex anytime, anywhere, with anybody or anything.
Take all the leftist ideas & make Baltimore implement them to the nth degree.
Baltimore can be a 3rd world slum like millions & millions of places around the world.

I don't see fear in Mosby. I see jubilant defiance. The chronology of events in Claire's piece reminds me of questions I keep failing to see answers to in the news. Whose job was it to strap FG into a seat. Mosby noted that Ofc. Goodson failed to do so 5 separate times, which would seem to indicate she thinks that's Goodson's job. If so, why charge the bike officers for failing to do so? The chronology also includes 25 yo Ofc. Porter, the youngest of the 6, showing up along the route to the hospital, checking on FG, and moving him from the floor to the bench. The 45 yo driver Ofc. Goodson was very senior to 25 yo Porter, so why does Mosby think Porter should have taken independent action and called EMTs when the more experienced Goodson hadn't/wouldn't? Mosby is a disgrace.

Excellent Pieces, Clarice, though I didn't get this:
Was the second group acting in protection of the cops, or protecting the rioters from the cops? There is another act in this play:
The cops back off on the inner cities.
To protect themselves, they reduce interactions with the criminal element, thus allowing crime levels to increase.
This is what the situation was in NY City before Giuliani. I knew cops who'd describe how they'd get a call about a crime in progress in a certain area, give it ten or fifteen minutes to resolve itself, and only then show up at the scene.
Why bother risking your life or livelihood to protect people who think you're the enemy, when the politicians think so, too? It's a natural reaction.

Michael Goodwin in the NY Post last week wrote about Baltimore needing to adopt Guiliani's "broken window policing" strategy that's worked well for 20 yrs.
"Consider Baltimore’s longstanding crime problem. It is one of the most violent cities in the country and has the fifth-highest murder rate, according to the FBI.
With a population of about 622,000, Maryland’s largest city had 235 murders in 2013. New York, with 8.4 million people, had 333 murders. If New York had Baltimore’s per-capita rate, it would have had 3,173 murders. That gives you a sense of how dangerous Baltimore was before the riots, and how little impact police there had on preventing crime. They lost the war long before this week’s mayhem."

The fight last night was pretty, no very, boring.
Mostly just a chessmatch with Mayweather dancing around keeping Pacquiao at bay. Pacquiao could never figure out how to get to him. Mayweather would land a few punches and win the round.
Rinse and repeat.
There was only one punch that really hurt either fighter - Pacquiao delivered it and Mayweather covered up - but Pacquiao couldn't punch through Mayweather's defense and gave up after 20 seconds or so so he wouldn't punch himself out. Other than that, just a bunch of jabs and crosses that were aimed only at scoring points with the judges.
Oh well. Good food and friends, so an evening well-spent. But it will be another 25 years at least before I spend any money to watch a boxing match.
Holy carp. I don't guess I've ever intentionally done the math on how long it's been since I started college. Now I feel old.

I admire the way Corporal Clinger was treated on Mash. If he wanted, for whatever reason, to wear dresses, so long as he did his job and didn’t interfere with others, that was fine.
Clinger didn’t force his dresses on anyone else or claim that children should should be taught in public schools that anything goes (and be taught how).

Panel time. NYT Sheryl Stolberg shockingly sides with Osby. George Will: strange that she seems to know so much so quickly. Juan: Daniel Patrick Moynihan had it right. Stolberg: Osby campaigned on what she's doing. Hume: Stolberg is full of shit. Stolberg: I am a dumb bint and quite homely. Juan: I hope there is due process.
