Not to say that the vaunted Clinton Machine was behind the collapse of Obama's trade bill in the Senate - Obama's grating, snarky ineptitude surely played a large role - but Hillary can now duck the trade issue for months while maintaining an utterly mainstream Democratic wait-and-see attitude. One less political nettle for Hillary to grasp, at least for a while.
Deflategate lives. On the prior thread.
Who is this Hillary of whom you speak? Is she the cuckolded wife of Billy of Hope?

"What do you think of Wells view of the Pats cooperation and the fine to the Pats, MarkO?"
I don't have a good sense of what happened in the investigation. I do know, however, that "obstruction" is what one claims when one cannot prove the original crime. (See, Libby) That way, one does not appear to be inept and one's client can be mollified.

But I wonder whether she can duck activists' questions in Iowa. Is it possible that she'll be held to the standard of an incumbent, so that if Sanders scores a respectable loss in Iowa, it will be like McCarthy's '68 loss in NH?

Isn't it ironic, MarkO, that under the old "bad" system, an alternative candidate would have more of an opportunity to present his or her views than under the "reforms". Why, if one were a cynic, one might think that's exactly what Dems and RINOs want!

Porchlight, if you went to a middleclass public high school how did you get into Carlton?
Carlton is the top school in Minnesota.
My youngest daughter was invited to an advanced summer English course after her eleventh grade high school year. She thought at the time it was rather "earthy/crunchy"; her words. She was turn off by the large amount of armpit hair of one of her female instructors.

Lazybusy, I attended that summer course!
I'm a legacy kid, what can I say. :) But I think I did pretty well once I got there.
It is pretty crunchy, and it was quite unfashionable at the time I was there for the female students to wear lots of makeup or pretty clothes. I dislike many things about it now that I've grown up, not least the insane leftist culture, and I am less inclined to donate than I was in the past, but I still love my time there dearly.

TC - Sorry, router bugged out and took a while to reset . . .
from the previous thread:
Never worked there, but I've visited many times. Lots of ties to various reservations (too complicated to get into here). It's been a figure of speech in the family since I can first recall. Had two Navajo friends in high school who used it as shorthand, and I let it slip out every now and then. :)
btw, the tornadoes the other day (Sunday) included one in southeast South Dakota that *virtually* destroyed a large swath of the town of Delmont, South Dakota, just north of the Yankton Reservation (about 20 miles NE of Lake Andes where Porchlight's Mom grew up). Just a terrible sight to see, there were just small piles of tiny, splintered pieces of wood where their houses had once been.

Thank you for the photo.
I have been through several although my home was missed. Once back in the 80's one took off the roof of the Sunday School wing of the Methodist Church I belonged to at the time. That wing was full of daycare kids who got ushered into the hall just as it hit. It was a miracle no one was hurt, when I saw the damage. I never forgot that.

henry-- a 21% aggregate tax increase, on ChiTown TAXPAYERS, not residents. What % of business/human residents pay what % taxes? Say 50% of business/residents pay 99% of the taxes THOSE taxpayers will realize on average a 40% tax increase? How many will leave state rather than pay? Plenty. At some point tax increases DECREASE revenue (see Detroit and St Louis and Camden and Blue Hell after Blue Hell) ChiTown/Cook County's pension costs cannot be paid by TPs. Game Over. Chap 9 will be used as a club to change pensions by CBA. Buy popcorn.

Seems like there's a simple answer to the "If you knew what you know now, would you have invaded Iraq?"
For example:
"If I had known that President Obama would turn what he himself bragged was a 'stable and self-reliant' Iraq into what it is today, then no, I wouldn't have put the innocent people there through that."
Why hasn't any of them taken this route, even after having time to plan their answers to the question? No idea.

Suburban Indianapolis, suburban Milwaukee, producers would absolutely flee to there from a grasping ChiTown. Only the cronies with ties to ChiTown real estate and gov't would be stuck and have to stay. That's why a net 21% tax INCREASE will never happen. Buy popcorn and watch the Lib v Prog death match.

Knish: To the left, everything is indeterminate and everything can be reshaped. Existence flows from power and power is pitted against progress.
What this says to me is that there is no reason to engage a progressive in conversation because their goal is not to come to understanding.

"I hadn't heard about the South Dakota tornado"
But a whole lot about how much air is in a million dollars or some such.
My sister was teaching near Wessington Springs SD
when I graduated from AF tech school. I caught a ride up there with a SSgt that was going to be stationed in SD. She told me to get off at a intersection of two roads. There was absolutely nothing to see there but fields. No stores, no houses, nothing but crops. If her husband hadn't shown up I might still be there.
Posted by: pagar | May 13, 2015 at 06:54 PM
I'll have to re-read the accountants' take on 'net' 21% tax increases for ChiTown. I may have botched the effect on producers in my haste. Apologies. The point stands, taxing ChiTown/Cook county producers will never 'net' 21% more tax revenues. Those producers who don't HAVE to be in ChiTown will leave. Rahm will wield Chap 9 like a club; the black/brown OFA Progs tried to knock him off and failed (plus his kid was mugged) so Rahm will feel free to use the Chap 9 option if the unions refuse to giveback pensions which can't be paid for by taxpayers. Buy popcorn.

pagar,
When I was traveling with my grandkids out west last year, we had a flat tire in the middle of South Dakota. I thought my grandson was going to freak out, since there was nothing except flat fields as far as the eye could see.
Fortunately, I called AAA and they had a guy come from the nearest town (19 miles away) and he put on the spare, then we followed him back to a town of about 8 buildings. While they put on a new tire, we ate ice cream from the local ice cream place on picnic tables. Grandkids still talk about how it would be to live somewhere like that. LOL!

106mph on the Amtrak?
Was it a faulty GM ignition switch or a promised ISIS Hack?
Posted by: Threadkiller | May 13, 2015 at 07:02 PM
as a twice a day Metro North rider I occasionally think about 'what if'. This engineer driving the Amtrak train at 106MPH and then slamming the brakes, and causing the derailment really should be up for manslaughter, as the Metro North engineer who fell asleep in westchester in 2013 is.Let him prove some kind of involuntary physical disability incapacitated him and caused the excessive speed (or he was lasered by some saboteur). He was responsible for this fatal mess, not Amtrak's budget.

So, I had a great day fishing the Wautauga River in Eastern Tennessee today.
A sales meeting - and while I drove in in the morning to attend the fishing - everyone else has been there since Monday.
Let's just say some had a lot more "fun" last night than others. Like an over-indulgent amount of "fun". And when I say "some" did, I mean in particular the other guy in my boat.
Poor guy. Love him to death. But he hit the vodka a little too hard last night. He wasn't even at the hungover stage yet - he was still drunk.
We were fly fishing. Our guide tried to show us the ropes, but my buddy just couldn't get it. I got the hang of it and we headed down the river.
After about 10 minutes, the guide suggested my buddy lay down the rod and rest - we'd wake him up in a litle bit to see if he felt better.
So I had the guide to myself. Half day trip, I caught 7 trout. Not bad.
The bad part was, everyone put in $20 to the pot - and the boat that caught the most fish split the pot with the angler who caught the biggest.
Being a man down, we didn't stand a chance.
But - I did beat the big boss and a sales director *combined* all by my lonesome. Their boat got six fish total.
So yay me. First time ever fly fishing, I was quite satisfied with my efforts.
My guide used to live in the Jackson Hole/Teton Valley area - so we had a lot of catching up to do. Great kid.
My poor buddy is definitely at the hung over stage now.

"If I had known that President Obama would turn what he himself bragged was a 'stable and self-reliant' Iraq into what it is today, then no, I wouldn't have put the innocent people there through that."
Ex, a continuation of that answer would include, if we hadn't gone Isis would have risen much faster - we had them beat until the president decided to lead from behind.
I've always thought Bush's biggest mistake was not realizing the American public could elect a complete moron as president.

Taxpayers in Chicago will be fine. Before Obama leaves office, he will be providing Illinois with a Federal "loan" through the Treasury to cover debt issues. Hundreds of billions have been doled out to banks, Chicago payoff will be a drop in a bucket. So the impact to Chicago taxpayers will be not too bad...thanks to the US taxpayers.

SBW, in my politics forum dominated by far left wing progressives that hits the nail on the head. Very interesting morphing lately. They have pretty much abandoned Obama, and with 2 exceptions, Hillary is not in the cards. They are completely behind Sanders and utterly confident he can win. I know of no democrat who thinks that, but they are all sure of it.

The Amtrak accident has hit close to home, as I learned today that Mrs K's first cousin, with whom we are fairly close (just had dinner with her a couple of weeks ago) was on the train and seriously injured. She'd gone down to the DC area to visit her mother on Mother's day and was coming back to NYC. She's in the ICU at Aria Hospital, which I'd never heard of, but I guess is in North Philly. Not quite sure of the nature of the injury, her back and/or kidneys. Lucky to be alive, I guess, and my impression is she'll be ok, but info is sketchy. The missus and I will probably go and visit her over the weekend.

When I lived in DC I went up to the 1989 World Canoe Slalom Champtionships on the Savage River in northern Maryland. Now that was some event to watch. You could walk down the path on either side find a good location and watch the best canoeists in the world. IIRC, the Eastern Europeans dominated. One of the best sporting events I have ever witnessed.
The only time I ever did a white water rafting was in Costa Rica and it was pretty neat since you go about 15 miles and end up in a little town where they then take you to a restaurant for lunch and back on the bus. A real adreniline rush.

No doubt. That is long after my brother and I were out of the sport. Back in the day, said brother was nationally ranked in kayak and C1.
Judging gates is a blast. In the old days, organization of even national events was pretty informal. There was no judge for an important gate in the center of the course, so I volunteered and was accepted.
This was near the beginning of low-volume boats, which could sneak the gates. That is, the bow or stern could be sunk underwater pretty easily, and go under the gates hanging above the water. The resulting wave often could jar the gate, and that had to be distinguished from actually hitting it.
There were no replays, and our decisions were final. What power!

Went white water rafting on the New, about 15 years ago with a couple carloads of teenage boys. Big fun.

We are in OT at the Gardens. Still 1-1. Sudden death.

For those on the east coast, the Youghiogheny River near Pittsburgh is also a lot of fun. The nearest town is the colorfully-named Ohiopyle.
