What's the rush?
State Department Proposes January Release of Hillary Clinton Emails
At least they don't seem to mean January 2017. The Times includes this bit of hillarity:
...Mrs. Clinton promised the emails would be released quickly, but the delay proposed by the State Department would not necessarily provide a breather. The Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary would come just after the State Department’s target for releasing the emails.
Of course, if no serious alternatives have entered those races because they could not find any traction in 2015, even hideous revelations in the emails (the non-deleted emails, remember) won't boost the alternatives that don't exist.
And why so long?
The department is dividing the material into small batches, with plans to review about 1,000 emails a week. In addition to the State Department’s Freedom of Information Act office, subject-matter experts within the department will review the emails before their release, as will other government agencies when relevant, including the Defense Department, the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Council.
“Currently, this project is staffed full time by a project manager and two case analysts, as well as nine FOIA reviewers who devote the entirety of their time at the State Department to this effort, plus other analysts and information technology specialists who provide collateral assistance to this review in addition to their regular duties,” the filing stated. “The team managing this project has met daily since early April to implement and oversee this large undertaking.”
My psychic sources have alerted me that as part of its ongoing effort to hire the alternatively enabled, the State Department is having the emails read by three blind people, so a lot of translation into braille is necessary. And all team meetings are chaired by a deaf person, so there is a lot of sign language involved, some of which goes over the head of the blind people. Fortunately, many of the meeting participants speak English.
Google's Latin translator says the below, rather than delenda est is the proper phrase;
Hillary erit sumpsisset.

I wonder how many of them have donated to the Clinton Foundation?
Or perhaps how many of them have in recent days begun receiving grants from the Clinton Foundation?
Or a job offer?

If Ref Jeff has insufficient information to make a determination I will conduct a thoroughly thorough investigation for a mere $45 mil.

The State Department proposes releasing the emails in January.
Miss Marple proposes terminating all State Department employees on the same date.
It is frightening to me that there are people in the government with the title "FOIA reviewer" and there must be a LOT of them, because nine are assigned to Hillary's emails.
Posted by: Miss Marple | May 19, 2015 at 11:37 AM
This is the Government we wanted shut down. The spineless GOPe allowed the narrative to be memorials and parks taking the brunt.
If it takes this long to read her BS, how do they convince anyone that 3000 page House Bills get read in any less time.
Posted by: Threadkiller | May 19, 2015 at 11:39 AM
Hilligula's emails?Turn them over to JOM and other certain blog sites, and we'll take a look... and be finished well before January.
Posted by: NKonChrome | May 19, 2015 at 11:42 AM
Ig, I don't consider it a violation - if the attempt is honestly to try and steer the discussion back there, rather than kick it up here.
But while I am convinced that that is the case in this situation, and that no true violation has occurred, I'm still considering a 4 game suspension and loss of next year's first round draft pick because even the appearance of a violation warrants sending a message about how seriously the rules are taken.
I'll issue my final report in the coming days. I appreciate Ig's offer to help conduct the investigation, but I have decided to pay myself the $45M.

I think Sharyl Attkisson had a piece on the results of these FOIA reviewers--lots of e-mails with essentially everything blacked out except for "Hi Syd," and "Best regards, Hillary."

Awww where did this thread come from? I just posted these a couple of threads back:
Anybody besides me think that a headline like this on Rollcall "GOP Wants Review of Internet Governance Handover" means squat once McTurtle and Orangeman get involved?
Fool me once, etc.
Anybody besides me think that yesterday's confirmation of the gun running from Benghazi to Syria revealed the pretty much certain GOPe involvement in the event and therefore the cover-up?
Fool me twice...
And for my hat trick (Fox) "THE HILLARY CLINTON EMAIL MYSTERY takes yet another confusing turn, with Republican accusations that the former secretary of state 'misled' the public by using multiple 'secret' addresses — fueling further calls for Clinton to hand over her private server to third-party examination."
Barn. Door. Horse long gone. Etc.

OT,
If you have $1.5 million dollars handy, you can bid right this minute on the Frank Gehry guest house that used to live on my parents' property in Minnesota.
My parents never owned it - the property was divided prior to their purchase of the Philip Johnson main house - but they had access to it for several years (it was empty), and my kids used to enjoy playing hide and seek in it.
I'm not a huge Gehry fan, but I do love this little place. It is said to be a landmark modern design because it is the first time Gehry used mixed materials (which was new then but is now something everyone does).

So there's a neighborhood emai list that Janet and I are both on, and it's gone crazy this morning. There are usually 2-3 posts a day, total, on various topics (stuff for sale, someone needs a babysitter, requests for recommendation for a contractor, etc).
Today, though, the topic is that a gun shop is supposedly looking to move into a currently empty storefront. And as you can imagine considering the political makeup of the neighborhood, opinion is mostly ranging from horrified to extremely horrified.
There's been talk of petitions to the County Board, boycotts of the shopping center in which the store is located, etc. There have been suggestions for what sort of business ought to be put in there.
But not one person has suggested actually, you know, coming up with a business plan, getting some funding and trying to rent the space to put a neighborhood-appropriate business in there.
(well, there was one sane person who suggested that if the neighborhood got together and came up with enough money to pay the landlord the rent he's asking for in order to keep the storefront empty and gun-free, the landlord would almost certainly take the deal. There were no replies to that suggestion, however...)

"neighborhood got together and came up with enough money to pay the landlord the rent he's asking for in order to keep the storefront empty and gun-free, the landlord would almost certainly take the deal."
Actually, no. Landlords hate vacant stores even when they are collecting rent. Occupied stores help each other out by attracting customers and also reducing crime. Long term vacancies give the appearance of "problem centers" and that holds down future rents, increases insurance costs, and accordingly harms Economic Values.

What were the mixed materials; old corrugated tin off a barn and walmart's cheapest tarpaulins?
I hope when they moved it they put it back together differently because it looks like some kid kicked his legos.
Posted by: Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki | May 19, 2015 at 01:01 PM
Old Lurker is exactly right. And once there are too many vacancies, it causes a snowballing effect with the stores which are left, which then look for other places to go, leaving even more vacancies, etc.
I saw it happen to a place that should be in a very good location, across from the very large Simon-owned mall near me. The largest building in the strip was a fitness center. There was also a Tuesday morning, a small liquor store, and a bakery.
The fitness center moved out and the building was leased by a church. The liquor store then relocated across the street, and Tuesday Morning went to a strip mall closer to the suburban subdivisions where the bulk of their clientele is. The church moved and the space was bought by a private restaurant called the "Patriot Diner" which mainly served breakfasts. I drove by there on Sunday evening and I think the restaurant is closed as well. Parking lot looks terrible and it should be an advantageous location, but it now looks abandoned.

OL @ 12:55
True. But at least paying him to keep it empty is a recognition that the property belongs to the landlord, who has the right to rent his space to whomever he likes, and who needs income from that rent to pay his bills.
That's better than "I don't like the busienss that wants to go in there! I want business X or Y or Z there instead! Wah!"

Presumably they could put together enough money to convince the landlord to rent to someone else,as opposed to leaving it vacant. Just offer to pay the rent until he finds a tenant they deem suitable.
Strangely, in my neighborhood on the UWS there are valuable retail spaces that have been vacant for years. It seems that the landlords are willing to wait a long time to find the 'right' tenant, which seems mean one that will pay the hugely jacked up rents that forced out the previous tenants. In some cases they may be hoping for a larger tenant to combine the properties, as some of these vacancies are contiguous and take up all or most of a block.
Posted by: jimmyk on iPad | May 19, 2015 at 01:16 PM
James, I wish I had a dollar for every neighbor who told me to "put a Starbucks in there".

Posted by: Beasts of England | May 19, 2015 at 01:16 PM
Jimmy, sometimes those long vacant stores are tied up in a BK of the previous tenant or otherwise under the control of same.
But rest assured that every Landlord will make the decision he thinks will create the highest value for his property, long term. I have one vacancy now that I could rent every day but I will leave it empty until a great tenant comes along who will pay a very high rent and not threaten but will help my other tenants, or else I will wait until the neighboring lease expires next year so I can combine the two stores into one larger store worth more PSF. It is all, always, about the long term economic value.

Posted by: Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki | May 19, 2015 at 01:25 PM

It is all, always, about the long term economic value.
I don't doubt that, OL, but the observed behavior can still be a bit mystifying. The particular block I'm thinking of has sat mostly empty for 4 or 5 years. These are first floors of residential buildings on an avenue, including some pricey coops. It's possible the coops are more willing to tolerate the loss of revenues and/or pickier about the tenants than a typical retail landlord. For example, many coops will turn down restaurants because they don't want the rats or other vermin.

We're in one of the hottest markets in the country and my lazy-butt neighbor who used to be in a band has now hung his real estate shingle and hired some fellow bandmates and they are all busy selling the houses of other musician friends (who are being priced out by property tax increases) for big bucks. I want them specifically quoting dems and attacking them if this subject is ever brought up on a talk show or in a debate.
I also would like them to explain in clear English why employment figures remain low, what is counted and not counted in those figures, etc.
I do not want ot hear any more "reach across the aisle" talk. The only reaching across the aisle I want to see is someone reaching over and grabbing a dem by his collar and heaving him out the door.
