First! Everyone still sleeping?

Jeff Dobbs

Um, I'm not.

jimmyk

I thought maybe you were just up late, Jeff.

Jeff Dobbs

Heh, that'll be tonight when I go play pool 'til closing time.

Jane

Hell, I've been working for an hour! Well sort of.

Excellent post, by the way. The Examiner has become one of the best sources on news now. This might be one case where the "Don't you know who I am!?" reaction of a pol might be appropriate.

I look forward to more cringe-inducing outfits and quotes, as well as multiple shots of the sullen girls rolling their eyes at boring stuff like castles and cathedrals.

A comment under the Strassel article someone posted last night:

So the cockroaches don't even scatter anymore when someone turns on the kitchen light? And why should they? They know they're in no danger and can do what they want. Where are the lawsuits? What about fraud charges?

First we had the help desk fiasco:

But according to a new report from the House Ways and Means Committee, the IRS isn't lacking the resources to answer taxpayer phone calls, but instead prioritized resources to pay out big bonuses to employees and to fund union events instead.
Then we got the hacker scandal:
But Republicans argue that IRS isn't really short on money. It's just bad at spending it correctly. As evidence, they point out that the IRS made Obamacare work -- but it still can't find the money within last year's $2.5 billion tech budget to swap out old computers and improve its cybersecurity.
Starting to see a pattern? GOPers are starving the beast in order to force compliance, and the IRS administration is intentionally cutting where it'll be most noticeable. (Shades of National Park Service during the gov't shutdown.) Form letters to Congress are of a piece with the rest of it.

The answer is obvious: impeach Koskinen. Let's let a bunch of Dem lawmakers try to defend him in the court of public opinion. And pass the popcorn.

Jeff Dobbs

Legal Insurrection:

In a story that’s gotten remarkably little news coverage, the Baltimore Sun Times reports that four of the Mayor’s highest ranking staff have quit since six Baltimore police officers were charged in the death of Freddie Gray.

Among those who have resigned:

LeVar Michael, Head of the mayor’s Office of Nonviolent Programs, resigned on Wednesday, May 20.

Angela Johnese, Director of the Criminal Justice Office, resigned on Friday, May 22.

Heather Brantner, Coordinator of the Mayor’s Sexual Assault Response Team, also resigned on Friday, May 22. (Coincidence?)

Perhaps most shocking however, was the next resignation the following week:

Shannon Cosgrove, the Mayor’s own Deputy Director, resigned Tuesday, May 26 (the day after Memorial Day.)

Why not hold in in Contempt of Congress and send the Seargeant at Arms to detain and jail him? They do have that power, don't they, even if it hasn't been used in...has it ever been used?

Another thing the Congress could do would be to pass legislation specifying travel requirements for executive branch employees (including Presidential appointees):

All domestic travel to be by railroad (or bus, where rail travel is unavailable). All travel is to be by economy-class ticket.

Hotel costs are to be capped at $80 per night.

Per diem for food and entertainment expenses is to be capped at $20 per day.

Conference registration or other travel-related fees paid by the employer are to be capped at $250 per year per employee.

Employees are not allowed to accept any reimbursement from any other organization for any travel costs, regidtration fees, etc.

Oh, and publish on the internet the name, job title and hometown of every executive branch employee who has travelled on the taxpayer's dime over the past 6.5 years, along with the # of trips, the destinations and the total taxpayer cost of the travel. And the name, job title and hometown of whoever approved that travel. Make it a nice, friendly site, easily searchable. Publicize it heavily. Let's let the taxpayers see exactly who and what they're paying for.

Of course they'll moan and cry. Let them. And of course Obama will veto it. Let him.

Sister of alleged Hastert sex abuse victim comes forward

The sister of an alleged sexual abuse victim of former House Speaker Dennis Hastert has come forward, just days before the once-powerful congressional leader is set to appear in court to face federal charges.

ABC News aired an interview Friday with the sister of Steve Reinboldt, who was a student equipment manager on the local Illinois high school wrestling team where Hastert was coach decades ago. His sister Jolene told ABC News that Steve revealed the abuse to her in 1979, when he told her he was gay.

"I asked him, when was your first same-sex experience. He looked at me and said, 'It was with Dennis Hastert,'" Jolene told ABC News. "I was stunned."

The claim marks the first time an alleged victim of Hastert has been named.

Extraneus

Apparently he wasn't the blackmailer.

Steve Reinboldt died of AIDS in 1995. Jolene said she was told by her brother that the abuse lasted through his four years in high school.

More on the IRS's contempt of Congress, from a House Oversight Committee hearing on Wednesday.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, opened the hearing by lambasting Mary Howard, the director of privacy, governmental liaison and disclosure at the IRS who refused to appear until she was subpoenaed.

Chaffetz then said that Howard — unlike all the other government witnesses — did not provide requested information about her agency’s compliance with the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

“We expect you to respond to requests from the United States Congress,” Chaffetz said. “For you to not respond to this committee in a timely fashion … is not appropriate.”

“We will drag the IRS up here every single week if we have to.”

Fake orca nearly drowns before it can scare Ore. sea lions

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- An effort to use a fake, life-sized orca to scare off hundreds of sea lions crowding docks off the Oregon coast ended, at least temporarily, with the fiberglass creature belly-up after it was swamped by a passing ship.

Still, Port of Astoria Executive Director Jim Knight said the sea lions briefly "got deathly silent" when the orca sailed into view. That was just before it started listing and tipped over Thursday night.

Once the 32-foot killer whale replica is dried out and repaired, "There's a chance we'll do it again" Friday, Knight said.

BTW the latest polling in Greece says the people might be having second thoughts:

An opinion poll on Friday suggested public support for the government's tough negotiating position is slipping.

The Alco survey for news website Newsit found 47 percent disagreed with how the government was handling negotiations, while 39 percent agreed. The June 3-4 telephone survey of 1,000 respondents also found 74 percent backed remaining in the euro, with only 18 percent of those polled preferring a return to a national currency.

Bruce Jenner caused a car accident in which a person was killed, but for which he has not yet faced the legal consequences.
But Bruce Jenner no longer exists and Caitlyn Jenner was nowhere near the place on the day in question. Just ask the witnesses, none of whom would identify the driver as a tall, scary, thin, buxom woman with great fashion sense who tosses a mean javelin.
Sorry daddy, but Perry Mason couldn't crack that alibi.

Alan Bond died. He's the Aussie who won the America's Cup in '83 taking the cup out of Newport for the first time. I was in Newport for some of those races - there was a controversy about the secret keel.

A few years later I met his wife, Red (now ex)and we became close friends. I went to his daughter's wedding in England and to visit them in Oz for a month in 2002.

Alan started out as a sign painter and at one point was the wealthiest man in Australia. Then he went to jail for 3 years where he spent his time teaching inmates business practices.

No truer words have been penned, but that it shows up in Slate is a surprise:

Like that other august and effective international body, the United Nations General Assembly, most major FIFA decisions (including the election of its chairman and the location of the World Cup) are determined by a “one country, one vote,” process. This means that, also like at the U.N., dictatorships, thugocracies, and other illiberal regimes—what the late U.S. Ambassador Daniel Patrick Moynihan referred to as the “jackals” of Turtle Bay—have disproportionate sway over FIFA business.
