As I've said many times before I'm sure Romney is a good man and I take no pleasure out of pointing out how he was the wrong candidate at the wrong time. As the architect of RomneyCare, which Jane has pointed out numerous times how terrible her coverage is for what she pays, he was poorly positioned to take advantage of the huge public discontent with 404Care. He didn't look like somebody who was comfortable going for the jugular so that was no great surprise. I would have rather he won than 404 but am not convinced he was the right person to reverse the direction of the country.

For whatever reason, there just weren't any compelling GOP candidates that attracted big money donors; Romney being very adept at securing those is probably a large part of that situation. I voted for Gingrich in the primary even though he was far from my optimal candidate. He might have lost the general election but it wouldn't have been from letting up in the debates.

Going back to the first appointed Governor of Puerto Rico in 1942, excluding the first few who were military officers whose party affiliation is unclear, all of the Governors have been Popular Democrat or New Progressive.
