Jane:
Hey Hit. This is a lot of comments for an IPad.

So I am nostradamus.

Look, I'm going to put up a new thread - but it will be open only to those I invite. It should be up in just a couple minutes.

Frau Fragezeichen

Good questions, Miss Marple. Too bad they are not being asked all over.

daddy

...Will the history Nazis now go after the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the allied Sons of Confederate Veterans organizations?

Yes.

Apple pulls Civil War games from App Store in ongoing controversy over Confederate flags

I vaguely remembered these Chewing Gum Civil War trading cards from the early 60's:

They were a few years before my time, but I'd come across them at my cousins or friends houses, and recall being fascinated at the grisly images and the explanation of such and such historical date and battle on the back of the card. For me they were probably valuable in providing a sense of history but I suppose that's verboten nowadays.

Anyone else remember them? Topps 1962 The Civil War News Gum Card Set

Publius

Miss Marple, only the ChiComs know.

Miss Marple

daddy,

Something else for me to look for at the auction!

Or to keep for my grandkids and great grandchildren, so they can sneakily read about verboten history.

You know, if we had written about all of this back in 2008 we would have been called crazy.

At least I can finally and truthfully say I was smarter than John McCain.

IRS Scandal Update - IRS Purposely Erased the Email Backups AFTER Getting a Subpoena for Them

http://commoncts.blogspot.com/2015/06/irs-scandal-update-irs-purposely-erased.html

Miss Marple

maryrose,

I agree. Or as Cooter said, I will fight these people until hell freezes over, and then I will fight them on the ice."

However, we have to fight smart and not just make ourselves targets.

Tonight at the auction I was out having a smoke before the auction started. 4 guys and me:

1. Auction assistant Sean, hard-working young guy who hates being told what to do.
2. Tommy, my flea market buddy with no teeth and a heart condition.]
3. Retired union guy who dabbles in collecting, probably about 50.
4. Antique mall older guy who makes his living with his booth.

Tommy said we'd probably all go nuts, but he was inclined to vote for Hillary because he thought she's do a better job. Well, everyoe went nuts, and I told Tommy to talk to me before he voted, as Hillary has screwed up everything in the middle east and she's a crook.

Then we got to talking about how the libs want to tell everyone what to eat, what to buy, how to live, etc. etc. Everyone is disgusted with DC and Obama, and I am making it my mission to convince Tommy to not vote dem. (I think because he is poor and scared about health costs that he is prey to the dem line.)

I will tell you that all of them will go nuts over the gay marriage thing, if it is made legal.

Jeff Dobbs

Thanks maryrose!

I'm out. Gotta finish packing, clean the house (mrs hit and run's parents are showing up while we are gone) and then make a cursory appearance at work in the morning and then hit the road.

I've got one, maybe two more beers worth of work around the house to do before hitting the sack.

And that sack better watch out - I'm hitting it hard.

I'd like to apologize to NK and anyone else offended by the way I reacted last night. I should have been more charitable in the way I responded. The first thing that came to mind was the burning of that Ursuline Convent and the Sacred Hosts in her Tabernacle. The bricks from that church were used in the foundation of the church where my Cardinal is seated. A year ago Easter, at the Vigil Mass, my son Ross became a Catholic and received that Holy Sacrament for the first time at Boston's Cathedral of The Holy Cross.

Regarding the Pats, I think Rachel Nichols, after speaking with Brady's lawyer tweeted, "Tom Brady appeal hearing OVER. Union lawyer Jeffrey Kessler says they made a "compelling case" & that the QB was there 'til the "bitter end"

Daddy,

Apparently the Merrimack couldn't figure out which flag to fly.

Dave,

The Topps Trading Card has this scene:

And in a write=up says this:

This is the actual painting that was used to produce card #8, entitled "Destructive Blow," from this extremely popular set which chronicles the rich history of the Civil War. This extremely detailed artwork depicts the Confederate battleship Merrimac sinking the Union ship Congress in a flurry of flames. The artwork includes additional image area which was cropped out by Topps on the issued card. This is exactly the type of horrifying image that many parents felt was inappropriate to market to youngsters in a historical bubble-gum card set, and which distinguishes this set from other historical sets.

Surprisingly, (or not) the Civil War Trading Cards were printed in England.

And an hysterical reaction to something that was a bit of a moot point anyway

First, whatever the eventual fate of Obamacare, the notion that courts now have the undeniable option of rewriting law that doesn't make sense to them or that they find objectionable is hardly a moot point.

Second, since the "hysterical reaction" comment was directed at me, look: either war is coming or it isn't. In 1773, in 1858, in 1938 - there were always those on this continent who told others they were overreacting to a moot point.

daddy is right - do you want to explain why you you fought or do you want to explain why you didn't fight?

There are no shortage of men to tell you "this is not the hill to die on."

Dave,

We need DoT. I recall him telling us that I believe 8 of his ancestors became Naval Officers for the South, one of whom penned a still existing published book about his experiences aboard the CSS Ship something or other. Hopefully I can dig DoT's old post up later tonight, and maybe it'll give us some rationale for whatever flag they flew under.

Also thought this from Wiki is interesting in how the USS Merrimack becomes the CSS ship Virginia: USS Merrimack becomes CSS Virginia

Here, BTW, is the flag of the CSS Shenandoah, the last Confederate Naval Ship, and the last Confederate anything to fire a shot in battle in the Civil War, when it blew up a number of Whaleships here off the western coast of Alaska.

I can present my pistol permit to a Texas Ranger and trust that it will be honored four hundred miles in the other direction. I know that I can stop for small talk in any Waffle House in Georgia, and strike up a meaningful conversation with the Walmart shopper behind me in line in Mississippi. I have been reviewing proposals for NSF that are intended to transform graduate education. There are some good ones, but a lot of real steaming piles of dog s**t. Most try to correct problems that I did not see as a grad student, or as an undergrad, for that matter.

If these proposals represent what has happened to graduate school, I'm glad that I am old. The old days allowed you to do wonderful things; these days, it seems that allowing student choice and self-direction is a bad thing. So too is following where the research takes you. It all has to be planned, reflected on, evaluated, assessed, and redirected.

I'll add another irritating thing about this proposal batch: PhDs were treated as part of workforce development. Now that's fine for high school or bachelor's degree students from the usual degree mills. But not for a PhD.

Nowhere was it even mentioned in most of the proposals that a PhD should prepare one for a life of independent scholarship. There is way too much emphasis on groups and mentoring.

I'm not smart enough to be an academic these days.

This afternoon Howie Carr had former TV actor Mark Goddard (Lost in Space, lots of westerns and cop shows) on to talk about "Mass CON", which I guess is a pop culture convention but sounds like something the state government does, but I digress.

Audio from a phone conversation between a customer and an Amazon representative indicates that the government has forced the company to remove the products.

“Is this a political statement by Amazon.com or is this a directive that you’re following, that the government said you know we want you guys not to sell these anymore?” the caller asked.

“The government is not allowing us to sell this Confederate flag,” the representative responded.

“So the government is not allowing you….to sell it?” the caller pressed.

“Yes,” the representative responded.

“So Amazon is not making a political statement, this is something the government told you to do?” the caller questioned one more time to clarify.

“Exactly.”

derwill

I wasn't directing anything at you personally, Porch. Rather it was a general comment directed at this call for bloodletting, which, yes, I do believe to be an hysterical reaction to a ruling that at it's core is no different than the ruling they made two years ago. Which is what I meant by it being a moot point. The precedent was already set back then.

The trouble with deciding that this is the hill to die on, is that one better be damn sure one is actually willing to die on it, because chances are one will. I want to know just who is going to be doing this fighting? Are these theoretical rebels prepared to shoot to kill their liberal relatives, their liberal neighbors, their own Dem-voting precious snowflakes? And what exactly are we to expect to come out of this bloodletting, even if we do prevail? I can't foresee any hope of a civil war or a revolution restoring us to the USA of the early 1800s, or even of the 1950s. Can the spilling of blood cleanse 240 years worth of national history, let alone erase the consequences of industrial and technological progress, so that we can go back to the original constitution and a clean slate? And what type of man is more likely to emerge as the president of this New Republic of the United States of America. A George Washington, or--more likely--the proverbial charismatic demagogue?

It seems as if both the Left and Right in this country are lurching ever closer to acting on a desire to literally wipe out the existence of the other side. My feeling is that we all better be damn careful we don't get what we wish for.

DrJ

derwill, Strassel's column in tomorrow's WSJ agrees with your earlier comemnts. It is worth reading.

Threadkiller

Thoughts???

Yeah.. one thought:

The American political and media elite have determined, for whatever reason, that the Constitution’s eligibility requirements for the presidency are not important.

That is the only conclusion one can draw from the misinformation, disinformation and disinterest they have shown to the serious questions swirling around not only the unique case of Barack Obama but also to the definition of “natural born citizen” in future presidential elections.

It’s not unprecedented that failing republics dumb down eligibility requirements for the presidency. It’s not unprecedented that failing republics ignore or obscure eligibility requirements for the presidency. It’s not unprecedented that failing republics make tragic mistakes in permitting non-qualified candidates to serve in the presidency.

It happened in 1932 in Germany with a candidate named Adolf Hitler.

If the guys spilling the blood have the will it can certainly cleanse the last 100 years of unconstitutional accretion of Federal power.
The Constitution is not only compatible with any industrial and technological progress, its proper application fosters that progress.
