Jeff, on a thread for Jane should the background be orange?

Miss Marple

Thank you, Jeff! When I am on later today with my iPad this will be a great help!

Threadkiller

This looks like a good place to post birther stuff.

Jeff Dobbs

The answer is three.

Miss Marple

I think this is in bad taste. The loose cannon is in operation this morning.

However, there will be some who despise McCain so much they will applaud.

Jason NobleVerified account
‏@jasonnobleDMR

Donald Trump on John McCain: "He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured."

Miss Marple

I would point out that Trump has accomplished one thing: Making me see McCain in a favorable light.

Rick Ballard

Miss Marple,

How 'bout a brake on posting blather regarding the utterances of Donald Kardashian?

We all know you sincerely and completely in no way support the buffoon, yet by curious coincidence can't seem to avoid Donniespam.

Miss Marple

OK, Rick.

I will run my posts by you before posting anything further. I didn't know you were the arbiter of taste.

DebinNC

Rick Perry and Jeb Bush have dissed Trump; Cruz has quasi-supported him; and Scott Walker has wisely ignored him afaik. It's important to know what Trump is saying. And watching how other candidates are dealing with questions about his comments is very important too imo.

Miss Marple

Well, without mentioning any names, I do think a certain candidate sort of imploded with his vulgar and misplaced comment. But you will have to ask Rick if he wants to know about what's going on on Twitter regarding this mysterious comment, as he apparently thinks that no news is good news.

jojo

Carson has also supported him.

peter

I read an article recently that questioned McCain's supposed heroism and mentioned long rumors that he had cooperated with the Communists. Other residents of the Hanoi Hilton gave him a cool reception when he came back to the US. I'll see if I can post that link.

peter

Here it is: at the UNZ review: LUN

Captain Hate on the iPhone

I agree with Deb that the reactions to Trump are very revealing.

DebinNC

I support Ben Carson's views on illegals. I wish someone would call for a stop to the annual flood of 100,000s of legal Muslim "refugees" from the ME, which is crazy imo.

Threadkiller

Scanning the open thread controversies above, I believe birther nonsense is not necessary.

Miss Marple

I still want to know how the polls are asking the questions in order to get the numbers they are getting.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

I don't mind guys expounding on FP and military issues if they haven't served. Of course that is not a requirement.
I do mind a guy who never delivered a salute belittling a wounded combat veteran and POW who served honorably, no matter how big a chump. for his service.

Rick's 12:11 seems uncharacteristic and kinda unfortunate to me.

Captain Hate on the iPhone

I wish DoT were here to respond to peter's link because surely he knows some people with insight who can be trusted.

Threadkiller

http://www.mediaite.com/tv/trump-mccains-a-war-hero-because-he-was-captured-i-like-people-that-werent/

Leave to Luntz to defend McCain with the war hero stuff in the first place.

sbw

TK: I believe birther nonsense is not necessary.

Hahahahaha!

sbw

Insofar as it is repetitive, TK, it is not necessary.

Miss Marple

Captain Hate,

Few people are aware of that controversy and those rumors. I therefore think attacking McCain was done simply as a smash-mouth personal attack, probably because of McCain's attack on The Candidate I Must Not Name.

Since most people see McCain as a war hero (even those who disagree with him politically) the attack will look vulgar, mean, and low class.

However, it tips his hand on his debate style. Candidates should be prepared.

sbw

BTW, Jane, I missed my new thread guess by 142 comments. I tried. Thanks, Jeff, for starting a new one.

Captain Hate on the iPhone

Mediaite is a terrible site to load on an iPhone, at least my version.

Jeff Dobbs

Miss Marple:
I still want to know how the polls are asking the questions in order to get the numbers they are getting.

Most polls publish their questions.

For example, here is the latest Fox poll.

The RCP page includes a link to the poll docs released by the pollsters (in almost all cases - sometimes the link goes to a press release instead)

Sue

I don't have Jeff's mad JOM research skills but the story of McCain's supposed betrayal was discussed on JOM during the 2008 campaign. IIRC DoT shot it down. Emphatically.

Jeff Dobbs

sbw:

Yes, but in your "guess" you used the word "betting".

Turns out, you owe me $500.

I prefer cash.

Captain Hate on the iPhone

I think you're right, Sue. The donks spare no expense or effort on opposition research, unlike the COMITY party, and wouldn't have been afraid to use it if they didn't think it might blow up in their faces.

Threadkiller

Essentially Luntz got the whole thing ginned up and when he had nothing else to offer about McCain he tried a "he is a war hero" smart bomb.

Trump didn't bite and gave it to Luntz with both barrels.

Maybe we should excuse all of McCain's betrayals because he is a "hero?"

Not me.

jimmyk

Inquiring minds want to know: How does this supposedly increasingly devout Muslim get arrested for DUI? Probably didn't go over well with his new pals.

Centralcal on iPad

He was snorting caffeine among other things, is what I heard on talk radio, jimmyk. I have snorted caffeine accidentally, myself, often whe reading Rick Ballard's pithy, witty comments.

sbw

Jeff: Turns out, you owe me $500. I prefer cash.

Remind me next time I see you. :-)

Captain Hate on the iPhone

The 2008 election was an eye opener for me on what a miserable POS McCain is and why Rush and other conservatives bad mouthed him so much. That in no way justifies scurrilous attacks on his POW experience.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

The link peter provided and the links I followed from it are chock full of the worst kind of paleo-conservatives and nutty libertarians along with the smattering of approved leftists whose nuttiness occasionally coincides with theirs.
All of the accusations are third hand and allegations or innuendos, some of them fairly preposterous or saying the opposite of what the author thinks they are.
Are we really going to use Ron Unz, former publisher of the arch-paelo American Conservative and most bizarrely, considering his paleo bona fides, a defender of illegal aliens.
The link I followed went to Counterpunch. A link to Pravda would be more credible.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--Maybe we should excuse all of McCain's betrayals because he is a "hero?"

Not me.--

But we can excuse Trumps, such as the one I linked earlier where the tough conservative is still yapping about the Feds running healthcare, because he's not a "hero"?

This thread is a PITA.
Later.

Jeff Dobbs

Ig:

In TK's defense, he addressed Trumps comments on healthcare after I posted about them yesterday.

Vague policy statements early on from a Presidential aspirant?

Unheard of.

It's the vagueness....

jimmyk

Today's WSJ front page above the fold is all about the four murdered Marines, with pictures of each of them. Today's NYT front page above the fold has a huge picture of Muslims celebrating the end of Ramadan. Oh, and a one-column story about the gunman. Below the fold is a one-column story about the Marines. Priorities.

clarice

I know someone who was in the cage next to McCain--he went through hell. OTOH as a Senator he's intemperate, mercurial and often stupid.

Threadkiller

http://www.c-span.org/video/?327045-1/2015-family-leadership-summit&live

At about the one hour mark you will hear the Luntzer going berserker on war hero gobbledygook. As Trump answers Luntz goes off the deep end.

I wonder how many of the 15,000 crazies that saw Trump in Phoenix were veterans. Maybe a hero or two in the crowd McCain insulted?

Threadkiller

Thanks Jeff.

Michael (fpa Patriot4Freedom)

jimmyk - Belated congratulations on your article re Greece's descent into debt and the Euro mess. Very informative, well-written, and timely. Sorry that events transpired that prevented it from being widely read and appreciated.

Miss Marple

Twitchy has various reactions plus within the thread is the clip:

I assume this link meets with Rick's approval, since it criticizes Trump very heavily.

Janet - I wish my family had a poncho

Today's NYT front page above the fold has a huge picture of Muslims celebrating the end of Ramadan. Oh, and a one-column story about the gunman. Below the fold is a one-column story about the Marines. Priorities.

I found my old papers on the Little Rock shooting in 2009, the other Islamic, drive by shooting at a military recruitment center. Pvt. Long was killed & Pvt. Ezeagwula was wounded. The late-term abortionist, George Tiller had been shot the day before. Anyway...I had a note in there about the WaPo coverage.

I put up on FB -

I have an old note that compared the WaPo coverage of Tiller's death with Pvt. Long's death...
6-1 ~ Tiller pg. A1
6-2 ~ Tiller pg. A1 & A4, Pvt. Long pg. A16 (a short AP notice titled "Soldier Killed At Recruiting Office")
6-3 ~ WaPo editorial on Tiller, nothing about our soldiers
6-5 ~ another article on Tiller & some editorials on Tiller
6-10 ~ another article on Tiller
It is just interesting to see what gets amplified & what doesn't.

I bet most WaPo readers wouldn't remember something happened in 2009. One 3" bit on page A16. :(

Sue

Janet,

I just noticed the poncho comment in your name. What did I miss that you are wishing for a poncho?

DrJ

It is just interesting to see what gets amplified & what doesn't.

Absolutely true. It is one reason I don't read the "important" newspapers, and ignore the network news.

The WSJ isn't great, but it is about the only mainstream source here that is worth reading. I'd appreciate advice for others. (The E-communist isn't bad either if you understand the biases of its various writers.)

Jeff Dobbs

Wait, it's that McCain isn't taking care of veterans that's the issue?

During a news conference after his appearance, Trump did not apologize but tried to clarify his remarks: "If a person is captured, they're a hero as far as I'm concerned. I don't like the job John McCain is doing in the Senate because he is not taking care of our veterans."

I thought it was immigration? And calling people "crazies"?

I guess now it's pander time to try and tie it to servicemembers to try and stop the bleeding.

Man of principle.

jimmyk

Thanks, Michael. Timing is everything :).

I may have mentioned that the first draft of the piece was before the agreement was reached, and predicted that there would be an agreement with harsh terms. But by the time they wanted to go with it the agreement was hatched and they asked me to rewrite it. Then Iran and Chattanooga happened.

Alan (Couldn't be) Blinder had a related piece in Thursday's WSJ, but got it wrong IMO. He wrote:

Compare the U.S. I live in New Jersey, one of the richest states. We New Jerseyans have been making fiscal transfers to poor states like Mississippi, funneled through the federal government, for decades. But few of us notice it, and we don’t vote on it. The transfers happen automatically because New Jersey and Mississippi are in the same country.

This misses the point that Mississippi isn't acting like Greece. They just pay lower taxes because they're poorer. They're not going crazy with a Uncle Sam's credit card.

Probably behind the paywall and not really worth reading.

Sue,

It's just silliness from an old Tim Blair post.

http://blogs.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/timblair/index.php/dailytelegraph/comments/his_family_has_a_poncho/

" “I am Hispanic and I have some traditions from Mexican culture and the vice-chancellor’s invite said ‘bring your own sombreros and ponchos’, which reduces Mexican culture to just a costume,” Mr Caceda said.

“My family has a poncho and it is really important to us, and these people are treating it like a costume.” "

He's 67, like HC. Bernie and Biden are 72.

And Webb is 69. The only Dem candidate not well into the Medicaid years is O'Malley.

DebinNC

O'Malley tweet after the AZ booing:

"Afterwards, in a tweet, O’Malley said: “Everyone deserves a voice. #blacklivesmatter. I WILL promote a racial justice agenda as president.”

The ads blaring that quote write themselves. O'Malley must sense that, like most people, blacks don't like Hillary and, since Vermont's black population is basically nil, going full-throttle for black votes will win him the nomination.

Trump did not bad mouth McLame's POW experience, he bad mouthed him getting shot down and caught. If I had to rank two groups 1) those who keep their planes in the air, vs 2) those who got shot down, I would pick the former. I did not serve in the military but I watched ever episode of Black Sheep Squadron.

Plus McLame called Trump supporters "crazies". I assume there were many military vets that were in the Phoenix crowd. F Juan!

What if there were three groups, the third being those who got deferments to avoid the chance of ever being shot at, much less shot down, and then bad-mouthed group 2?

Is that group first, second, or third?

DebinNC

McCain was a hero, and he's squeezed every ounce out of that experience to promote himself politically for 40 yrs. Other than working hard on POW issues decades ago and being the Sunday show Republican libs most often invite to misrepresent our views, what has McCain done worth mentioning? I can't stand him.

Miss Marple

narciso has it right. It was a stupid way to attack McCain, and it was too personal, plus as a collateral subject by inference he dissed anyone who was shot down and/or captured.

This is what I meant a few days ago about how Trump had an undisciplined speaking style. It's come back to bite him.

You know what I can't figure out? Why his two kids are such polished and professional people with no issues and who do not make controversial comments. The only thing I can think of is that Ivana had more influence on them.

GMax

If Trump had said, "McCain is a preening jackass from the same mold as my current senior senator Chuck You Schumer, and would run over his own grandmother to get to a microphone", he would get an amen from me. I was in a Kiwanis Club with a survivor of the Hanoi Hilton, and its just not acceptable to not acknowledge that he endured a horrific experience there while in service of our country. Now nearly everything since returning home, is fair game. And if he did it right I would hoist a few tomatoes with him...
