This can't be the headline and lede Team Obama hoped to see at the NY Times:
Obama’s Call at U.N. to Fight ISIS With Ideas Is Largely Seen as Futile
UNITED NATIONS — President Obama called upon a conclave of world leaders on Tuesday to fight violent extremism not just with weapons but with ideas, jobs and good governance, a strategy he has long advocated. There are few signs that it is succeeding.
Ouch.
Military pressure, Mr. Obama said at a United Nations summit meeting, will be insufficient to vanquish groups like the Islamic State, also known as ISIS and ISIL.
“This means defeating their ideology,” he said. “Ideologies are not defeated with guns. They are defeated by better ideas — a more attractive and compelling vision.”
Hmm. I infer there were no follow-up questions asking Obama to detail the better ideas that defeated Hitler. For my money it was a combination of guns, Stalinism, and the democratic vision of the Western leaders, but two of those are not on Obama's little list. I hope.
And since the West lost China to Mao and Vietnam to Ho Chi Minh, does that suggest to Obama that communism is superior to Western democratic ideals? Just asking (Yeah, I agree - why ask?).
Finally, and with respect to ISIS, Obama is in the grip of a fundamental misperception. ISIS is not participating in some sort of an electoral contest in which competing sides are trying to cobble together a coalition that can attract 51% of the vote. My goodness - ISIS releases recruiting videos in which prisoners are beheaded en masse or burned alive. That is not an attempt to appeal to a mass market.
So while Obama tries to present his better governance ideas that may attract popular support from 50% or 60% or 70% of a population, ISIS is trying to recruit the 1 percenters intent on joining the craziest, baddest asses on the planet. And what sort of recruiting numbers might the ISIS approach produce?
If there are a billion Muslims worldwide then let's say there are 500 million men, maybe 50 million of whom are of military age. If one tenth of one percent join ISIS, that is 50,000 recruits. What are the odds that there are 50,000 angry, disaffected Muslim men in the world? What are the odds that Obama will craft a message that wins the hearts and minds of 99.99% of its target audience, thereby draining the ISIS recruiting pool? High school girls are joining ISIS from England - does Obama imagine that this is a cry for reforms to their National Health Service? Were the three girls who left Denver to join ISIS just frustrated Hillary supporters?
The Times includes this telling detail:
Even Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. acknowledged in a candid moment when he arrived in New York that little would come of Tuesday’s meeting. He asked a group of reporters who were following him if they would stay awake at the United Nations meeting and “30 speeches about how we’re going to go after ISIS.”
When you've lost Joe...
A large group of well-intended people without guns can be subdued by a small group of crazies with guns. Is this really news to Obama?
this is not a serious forum,

“This means defeating their ideology,” he said. “Ideologies are not defeated with guns. They are defeated by better ideas — a more attractive and compelling vision.”
Time to repeat that story Obama heard from his grandpa - about his dad walking into a bar with a loudmouthed racist complaining of having to drink next to a black man? You know, the one where Obama's dad defeated the racist's ideology by talking to him about the universal rights of man or whatever. And not only defeated the ideology such that the racist became unracist - but the now unracist bought the drinks for the rest of the night and paid his dad's rent for the next month.
Glory hallelujah.

to fight violent extremism not just with weapons but with ideas, jobs and good governance
Time to repeat Obama's speech after the shootings at Virgina Tech in 2007? You know, the one where Obama pays lip service to the dozens who were killed and then proceeds to lecture us about "other kinds of violence" - like the violence of kids getting a bad education and the violence of someone having their job shipped overseas and the violence of a radio shock jock calling a college basketball team some mean things that made them feel bad about themselves.

that formulation reminded me of something ... a blast from the past:
http://www.nytimes.com/1993/08/10/opinion/yes-there-is-a-reason-to-be-in-somalia.html
>>>Success is important not only for the Somalis -- 300,000 people died from war and famine before the United Nations approved intervention -- but also because anarchy may produce refugees, uncontrolled arms peddling and targets of opportunity for terrorists and their state sponsors. But peace cannot be made overnight. It will take time for people who have been shooting at each other to start trusting each other. Combatants must be disarmed, retrained and re-employed. Development aid must be delivered and efficiently used. Democratic institutions must be established. Those who disrupt the peace must be stopped.<<<

Marvin Kalb, old CBS foreign correspondent now a sometime consultant on Fox, says that Obama and Kerry don't know what to do.
Kalb thinks this is about Putin holding onto power and his fear of national uprisisngs (especially in Moscow).
I don't think so, myself. I think it's about Putin walking into a big gaping hole Obama left, and grabbing his chance to "Make Russia Great Again." (If we start seeing ballcaps with that slogan in Cyrillic, we will knonw I am right.)

Yeah. It was this one.
“I come in peace. I didn’t bring artillery. But I’m pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you f* with me, I’ll kill you all.”
A smart POTUS would send Mattis over to the Russian embassy in Baghdad and Damascus and repeat those words.
Posted by: Jack is Back! | September 30, 2015 at 02:30 PM
NYT headline - U.S. Warns Russia About Non-IS strikes in Syria and quotes Kerry:
"Moreover, we have also made clear that we would have grave concerns should Russia strike areas where ISIL and al-Qaida affiliated targets are not operating," he said. "Strikes of that kind would question Russia's real intentions fighting ISIL or protecting the Assad regime." Kerry also said the U.S.-led coalition would "dramatically accelerate" its efforts.
Not exactly a "High Noon" sort of warning as "we would have grave concerns" means we currently have only mild concerns which might possibly, conceivably, reluctantly be upgraded to "grave" later on. No idea what gobbleygook "dramatically accelerate its efforts" means, but it sounds ridiculously weak.
Russian response:
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov followed Kerry, saying Russia is ready to "forge standing channels of communication to ensure a maximally effective fight." He listed countries with a key role to play in resolving the chaos in Syria, including Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Qatar , the U.S. and China.
Did BOzo release a list of his 60+ coalition members?
Posted by: DebinNC | September 30, 2015 at 02:33 PM

Jane and others worried about Putin's adventures in Syria, my take:
I am not worried. Not like there's anything that can be done about it anyhow. Besides, anyone killed over there (aside from Americans) by the Russians, is a net positive.
Fighting there, airstrikes, ground operations etc--it's a tough environment. We can sit on the bench a bit for awhile, put in the substitute quarterback. I am reminded of Mother Russia's adventures, the Great Game, in Afghanistan, oh how many years ago.
This current adventure in Syria might go much the same. Russia is on economic saline drip. Simultaneous operations in Ukraine and Syria will put a lot--A LOT--of pressure on his budget. Operations can kill his budget, eitehr he runs the force into the ground, or he inflates the ruble.
And, what will Vlad get for his troubles? A port on the Med? Well, okay then, but it is not like Tartus and Syria is a fun place to be.
He's supporting the s'h'i't'e's for goodness sake. The shites are bat-shite crazy.
What is the phrase, kill them all and let God sort it out? So, Vlad will be doing the killing for awhile. Good on him. Maybe we can send him some ammo, the supplies we were diverting out of Benghazi to the rebels.
Look, I am as angry as anybody at the utter incompetence of the foreign policy. Hell, the resident INTENTIONALLY LOST two campaigns, Iraq and Afg, not to mention vacillation leading to disaster in several smaller back page efforts.
But Putin--?? least of our issues.

Jane is probably right because the only way a WW3 could start is if Bozo "acted stupidly" and the odds are always in his favor to do that.
I agree with Sandy but the variable is a "known known" - Obama - and that is what is scary. Not Putin or Assad or Rouhani but our guy. They know exactly what they are doing but Bozo?
Not so much. And remember great leaders, smart leaders make sure they have good, smart people working for them. Bozo has Kerry, Rice, Powers and Ash Carter.

Now, there are many field grade officers and mid-grade/senior grade NCOs still available, but they will have to be promoted into authority during the next administration. For now, another year or two to rest and refit (somewhat) and wait out the traitor in chief.

He'd have to have testicles first.

No wonder they all want to get to Germany. Like here they have more and better rights than the legal citizens do.

Second German citizen evicted from her home so they can house "migrants".
Do I hear a "it can't happen here"?

I am counting on the patience of al-Sissi, Bibi, King Abdullah, PM Barzani, and a few others. I think they all can hold out until January 2017, and they'd be idiots not to look that far in advance and know that there will be a strong change in wind direction and intensity.
We've got to do out work, here, and get the right leadership in place in the Oval Office (meaning not a dem), and then after that, traditional allies will once again be allies and traditional enemies will once again be enemies.
All of the world knows this to be true. So they are lining up for goodies now, while there is still a chance, becasue

More of the GOPe stategery that we've all come to know:

If guns were allowed in DC, 90+% of the GOPe would never be able to walk or stand...

A bit more:
You KNEW this hack gasbag wasn't going to let this pass. *Because Dems never use any tragedy for political gain...* NEVER.

Lyle,
I switched over to MSNBC to hear if they had heard about Putin's actions, and the big story was McCarthy's gaffe. Boxer is demanding the Select committee be dismantled.
As far as I'm concerned it is a win/win. McCarthy probably ended his chance for speaker, and Trey (who says he's not retiring) can go full bore ahead.

Lyle @ 3:38
And they wonder why we hold them in such contempt...
Aside from anything else, why ever say something like that out loud? Is it just stupidity? Is he that in love with the sound of his own voice? Is the bubble truly so hermetically sealed that no common sense at all can penetrate it?

McCarthy also seems to believe in kumbaya:
Kevin McCarthy @GOPLeader 37m
Three goals in #Iraq: Defeat #ISIS, marginalize Iranian influence, & help foster a system of inclusiveness rather than sectarian division.

And right on cue, Hilligula claims victim status:

Screw the four dead Americans. There's a political campaign to be won. Soulless scrunt.
