House Speaker John Boehner will resign as Speaker (and as House member?) at the end of October. This seems to clear the way for a continuing resolution that funds the US government, including Planned Parenthood. Happy Halloween.
From the WaPo:
House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio), faced with a constant conservative rebellion, told Republicans Friday morning that he will resign at the end of October, according to aides and lawmakers in a closed-door meeting.
The resignation will end a nearly five-year reign as speaker, allowing House Republicans to approve a short-term government funding bill that will avert a shutdown of federal agencies. Boehner’s hold on the speaker’s gavel had grown increasingly unsteady amid threats from more than 30 Republicans that they would force a no-confidence vote in his speaker’s position, which would have forced him to rely on Democratic votes in order to remain in charge. It’s unclear whether Boehner is just resigning the speakership next month or also abandoning his House seat.
The shocking move means there’s unlikely to be a government shutdown next week. Following Boehner’s announcement, House Republicans said there was agreement to pass a clean spending bill to avert a government shutdown. Several members of the Freedom Caucus, the conservative group which led the revolt against Boehner’s leadership, said they will now support the spending bill without demands to defund Planned Parenthood attached to it.
First, maybe.

How in the heck does the 'leadership' think that giving up Boehner will compensate for continuing to fund the dem agenda. It makes it even worse. So scared to have balls that they'd sacrifice the Speaker, instead of fighting for their base.

I read the report rse linked two threads ago
(http://static.politico.com/8c/3c/79ac689c4666b76c261aab4907ae/report-on-stem-workforce.pdf)
It's every bit as horrifying as she said it was. And it's clear that far too many in the GOP are on board with the agenda presented there and the steps planned to implement it. Or, at best, they are unable to see or comprehend just how toxic it is.
MM (I think) posted in the previous thread that we survived the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl and many other massive calamities. But this is different, because the very abilities and habits and knowledge that enabled us to survive them are all being deliberately warped and destroyed.
People like Boehner, and McTurtle, and most likely whoever the new Speaker will end up being, are all OK with this madness, and that makes them enemies just as surely as the progs are.

I think that is a good idea.
anecdotally ... we knew a family that lived in subsidized housing, listing only the father's income.
But they had 2 grown kids that lived there & worked too. The mom worked for cash being a nanny. We knew them because the youngest daughter played travel soccer & the team paid her fees.
Everyone in the family had a car, cellphones,...they had cable TV, season tickets for Kings Dominion (like 6 Flags) & local sports teams.
At the time, we had 1 car, no cell phone, no cable TV, no AC, & were paying for their daughter. I don't know...it all gets too weird.
Life is choices.
Some cultures don't think anything about taking whatever they can get for free.

This is how I understand the "process". The Senate will not defund Planned Parenthood, thanks to Ayotte,Collins,Murkowski and several other RINOs. Boehner's first priority was to keep the government from shutting down. The conservatives would have made a motion to vacate the chair. He supposedly didn't have the votes,he's fed up with dealing with the conservatives, they've been the bane of his existence.
So,he's done.

My prior comment was said in my role as entertainer...er...observer, and was not an attack on Trump (for once). I am trying to visualize Hillary, for example, having a long talk with the head of NBC News about what questions reporters could ask her -- and that being the stuff of tweets and internet posts. I could see Hillary wanting to have the conversation, but I can't see the network doing it (at least in the public way all this seems to be going down with Fox.)
It really is interesting -- probably because Trump delivers ratings, and a lot of loyal Fox News viewers are also Trump supporters.

the bit about history rhyming:
Nixon's first challenger was Michigan Governor George W. Romney. A Gallup poll in mid-1967 showed Nixon with 39%, followed by Romney with 25%. However, Romney, after a fact finding trip to Vietnam, told a news reporter that he had been "brainwashed" by the military and the diplomatic corps into supporting the Vietnam War; the remark led to weeks of ridicule in the national news media. Since he had turned against American involvement in Vietnam, Romney planned to run as the anti-war Republican version of Eugene McCarthy.[39]
Nixon subsequently came with the margin of error with Johnson, by the fall of '67
