Jane, a couple more football games to go.

Marlene

Morning! Hubby is flying in to remote fishing camp this morning, owned by a corporate client. We aren't doing our usual Jeep week-end,so I urged him to go for for some R&R. Those camps have fantastic cooks,a full cookie jar and a beer fridge. He will probably do some hiking, part of the AT is near the camp.

I would be very uneasy to be in Europe now. I have one friend who is in France and Germany for three weeks and another friend who flew to Turkey on the way to a ship which will tour the Greek Isles! Sounds horrible to me.

James D

Insty quotes an article about immigration and this point applies to the U.S. just as well as it does to Europe:

Previous waves of immigrants – including those of the 1960s – entered a confident society with strong values and a decent birthrate. Today, they confront a European society that does not much believe in anything but a post-modernist faith in their own emotions.

Beasts of England

Why do those 'migrant' maps look so similar to the battle plans of theater operations in WWII? Same goal, right? Hitler must be jealous in Hell. He had to expend all those resources...

Scott Walker:

Time to End Big-Labor’s Corrosive Influence on the Federal Government

In 2012, American taxpayers shelled out some $156 million to do the bidding of big-government union bosses. Federal workers spent more than 3.3 million hours that year doing union work, instead of serving the government.

It’s a scheme that could only have been hatched in Washington. It’s called “official time,” and it allows government employees to work full-time for federal union bosses on the taxpayers’ dime. It’s just one of the reasons why action is required to end the corrosive influence big labor has on our federal government.

As president, I would stop that influence cold by eliminating federal government unions and returning power back to where it belongs: in the hands of hardworking taxpayers.

Old Lurker

Substitute "US" for "European" James and you complete the story.

Ex,

I've seen the same map in a book I have on the 11th century Muslim invasion of Europe. What goes around comes around.

rse

Why are they leaving Spain alone? Are the welfare benies just weaker there or does Spain already count as having been conquered once?

Miss Marple

rse,

I believe the naval installation at Gibraltar serves as a sort of deterrent.

Also, maybe the Spanish, remembering the last time the Muslims invaded, are following the Hungarian solution but with a low profile.

Old Lurker

No, I think on that earlier 11th century wave they did not have access to the beaches of Libya and Italy as friendly jumping off and landing spots, so they used the Straights of Gibraltar instead. But Hillary!! opened up a new route for them, so that can work backwards to retake Spain anytime they want.

How's that sound?

Walker to call for ending federal employee unions, abolishing NLRB

Experts were taken aback by the scope of Walker's proposals, which seek to undo decades of law and would gut the landmark National Relations Labor Act -- adopted in 1935 and signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the height of the Great Depression.

"I've never seen anything like this," said Ann Hodges, a professor at the University of Richmond who has studied labor law for more than 40 years. "This will take the breath away from anyone who's worked in labor relations for any length of time."

Walker's plan also calls for prohibiting automatic withdrawal of union dues to be used for political purposes and forbidding union organizers to access employees' personal information, such as their phone numbers.

Was discussing yesterday with my two older kids who get most of their info from print just how different the portrayals on the network news differ from the actual stats.

ABC and NBC seem to be valiantly tracking every adorable family and show the graphics of the families trekking. If that was where you got your news this would indeed be poignant.

Red looked at the 15K or so arrivals this weekend in Munich and realized it had already changed irrevocably from the place she visited in May. I will bet lots of families are looking at the visuals and stats and are thinking about a trip to canada instead of europe next summer.

Question for anyone here who might have a thought. I'm trying to help out a friend who's searching for a new job. I'm not looking for specific leads or anything - just some general thoughts I can pass on to try and guide him.

He's got an LLM in tax and currently works as basically a legal editor. He wants to get out of where he is, and he's not really sure exactly where he wants to go.

My thinking is that there are plenty of things somebody with an LLM in tax can do, and plenty of employers who would want someone with that in their background, outside of law firms. But I really don't know what those things might be.

So that's my question: can anybody give me some ideas I can pass along?

Egypt says 12 Mexican tourists killed by security forces in accidental shooting

MEXICO CITY – At least 12 people were killed and 10 injured in Egypt's southwestern desert Sunday when security forces mistakenly fired on a group of Mexican tourists, Egyptian officials said.
Extraneus
A joint military-police force was pursuing "terrorist elements" in the area and fired on four cars that turned out to be carrying tourists, according to Egypt's Interior Ministry. The ministry said the victims were Egyptian and Mexican.

Egyptian officials claim the safari convoy had wandered into a restricted area of the western desert. The tour company involved "did not have permits and did not inform authorities," Rasha Azazi, a spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism, told The Associated Press, adding that any trips to that area are required to be cleared by officials.

"They were not supposed to be there," she said, but could not provide further information on the circumstances of the shooting.

rse

James-the premier LLM in tax programs are nyu and florida and I believe G'town is 3rd.

People outside of the law can be unaware of just how crucial it can be that one attend a top tier law school, especially these days, or the main school in the state AND that you be in the top 10% or so of your class. It is a very dicey degree to get generally and that is just not being conveyed to students. Red has been trying to share this with her classmates, especially sorority sisters, and they all act like no one is telling them such things.

Where he got his LLM matters more than he may have been told.

Jack is Back!

MM,

Your 9:00 is reminescent of everything that gave rise to Thatcher.

JablamesD,

Has your friend thought about special interest groups that lobby on tax policy and law (i.e. CoC, Nat. Assoc. Mfgs., Business Roundtable, etc.)? Our tax issues when I was in Washington didn't require a full time guy so we used an ex-IRS commish as a consultant but the big SIGs have whole depts. lobbying tax policy. Also, you have the think tanks like CATO, AEI, Heritage, etc.

Appalled

OK, some questions for the GOP debaters tomorrow:

http://townhall.com/columnists/kurtschlichter/2015/09/14/the-obnoxious-and-important-questions-i-would-ask-at-the-gop-debate-n2050419/page/full

I don't agree with every premise in the question, but each candidate would be better off if they were required to answer them.

Interestingly, Walker went a long way to answering the obnoxious questions addressed to him today. I'd like him to to put policy around the idea of "eliminating liberalism wherever he finds it" in the bureaucracy. This is the strength he has over the other candidates, and he needs to be better about exploiting it. I'd also like to see him turn to Trump, at some point, and ask -- What have you ever done to fight entrenched interest in government, so that the government actually spends less for a change?

James D

JiB, I've thought about places liek that. I just don't know enough to direct him to specific job titles, etc.

Miss Marple

DebinNC,

I want to save the Syrian Christians, too.

Beck's apocalyptic stuff and grandstanding won't help, plus bringing them in illegally is not something I agree with.

Better to push Congress to pass a Syrian Christian Resettlement Act. If Obama vetoes it, then we can revisit smuggling them.

Starting out the way Beck did says that we are willing to break the law when it suits us. I don't like that.

Celestial Ignatz

--Guess what? It's over!!!!!The game to make rich people richer with tax breaks is fuuucking oveeeeeeer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Only idiots and Ignatz believe trickle down economics will work.--

Incorrect, oh microcephalic one.
I completely agree trickle down economics is a disaster. Trickle down economics is precisely what we have been enduring the last six years as taxes have remained high and economically depressive while the Fed has attempted to stimulate the economy by showering vast sums of free money on the fruited plain, the vast, vast majority of which is vacuumed up the very capitalist roaders the left claims to hate.
Vast swaths of the middle class have either opted out of employment or been forced out while the rain of free money has pushed commodity prices sky high.
The result has been a a diminished and depressed middle class with falling incomes and an elite of a few of the richest crony capitalists making out like bandits. Consequently there has been a widening gap in wealth between the middle and upper classes.
We have been into the future of trickle down economics and it doesn't work.

By contrast, under Reagan, whose policies are most accurately described as classical, free market economics, the middle class and the poor were lifted into greater wealth because all parties had their marginal investment and labor rewarded which spurred an economy wide expansion of wealth creation and economic mobility.

GMax

James

I am certain he could find employment at a CPA firm in their tax department. Tax returns and especially representing the taxpayer against the IRS in an audit.

My other thought is that the IRS has a new program where they supposedly will reduce a tax liability in a "Fresh Start". Lots of firms specialize in representing debtors, and could use someone who can read, comprehend and explain the law and regs to taxpayer clients in hot water with the IRS.

Miss Marple

Walker would do well to point out average salaries for IRS employees, how much their pensions are, what their medical care is like, and what amounts they contribute.

The IRS is almost uniformly hated, and it would be a really good campaign strategy to point out how much they retire with. Also at what age they are allowed to retire.

GMax

James

Some big corporations have internal tax depts. They deal with IRS agents who basically live full time at the corporation, plus the miriad of various state returns. Think of a natural gas pipeline company with has sales and income tax allocations to make in 20 or 30 states...

As Sowell has pointed out, trickle down economics is an invention of the left to be used as a straw man argument. You'll find nobody on the right calling for trickle down economics even during the 1980s when the term became fashionable among those arguing for greater taxation and government expansion.

rse

Building on gmax's point, look at the law firms the last 5 or so IRS commish's came from and then cross-reference using martindale hubbell to client lists. Then see which of those of in-house tax departments.

Also that degree can be golden in an affluent smaller town if he is willing to get away from DC. It can be a nice fit with someone who already has an established corporate practice. I used to work at one of the firms that hatched lots of commishes, but was chatting with an Ole Miss law student at a wedding last year who had gotten into all 3. His plan is to get LLM and then go back home.

Appalled's 10:26 is spot on and if Walker makes a series of broad, smart policy proposals that carve out a unique niche for himself he will have done far more for his campaign than either ankle biting or ignoring the leaky hot air balloon that is now leading.
Corporate welfare and green giveaways are another spot.

If he reacts, he loses. If he is on offense he's pretty compelling.

What gets reported about Trump is his jerk-like behavior towards others. The reporting of that does not hurt him.

Having proposals that attack Leviathan at its roots helps Walker. But he has to address the issue -- why not Trump (or Carson, for that matter) -- in a setting that gets a lot of eyeballs that plays to what he is good at. Otherwise, walker loses time and oxygen for his niche, because it remains all Trump all the time.

You can address Trump without insulting his voters.

FTL

Why the GOPe con't figure this out and go on the OFFENSIVE is beyond me.

If GOPe had run with the Lerner story, it would have been the end of the left in this country for at least a generation.

The failure *might* have been ineptitude, but the more believable explanation is that GOPe prefers the perks that come with the status quo over the far reduced roles that would be available in a government conforming to constitutional limits.

Did she look like Sorta Marge?

Miss Marple

Buckeye,

Perhaps I should support myself with a political think tank for outside the Beltway people. No lobbysists allowed.

For my next strategy, I would point out a big concern of my nurse sister. She (as I have said) is paying serious attention to Trump not only because of illegal immigration but our serious decline in manufacturing.

Her concern is that we now have such a weakened and politicized military spread too thin, and we are so feckless in foreign policy, that there is a serious risk of invasion (whether a southern border swamping like Europe, or China or Russia just landing troops). She is afraid that if we needed to, we couldn't ramp up the Arsenal of Democracy again.

I have been concerned about this with energy. When coal mines are closed, the pumps are shut down and a lot of underground mines will fill with water. It might take years (if ever) to get them operational again.

My sister was freaked out by the Chinese and Russian ships so close to out coast line.

Porchlight

I think I see what you're saying, Appalled. If Walker makes the case - as I think he has been doing, but with more eyeballs as you say - that he has actually done what others have only talked about, that moves him forward without the need to attack Trump directly.

Walker really is the only guy who's put his money where his mouth is and won, and that is why I support him.
