Jonathan Tobin on Obama's foreign policy legacy achievement:
Obama got his [Iran] deal despite the opposition of the majority of Congress and the American people.
Which makes a nice bookend with his ObamaCare achievement, which has never polled well and was jammed through Congress despite the good people of the great state of Massachusetts replacing Ted Kennedy with a Republican in a futile attempt to slow the express.
OTOH, a man who can stare down a glacier can stare down an unhappy public. And since you ask, the glacier retreated, as well it might and as it has for years.
TAKING US BACK: Woody Harrelson had thoughts about bricks in White Men Can't Jump:
What, you still throwing up bricks? What is this, a Masons convention? Wha... clank, clank! I need, like, a welding torch to play in this league! I got an idea... let's just stop right now and gather up all these bricks and let's build a shelter for the homeless so maybe your mother will have a place to live!

As we continue to see American Cops becoming targets of the Left, both literally and figuratively, thought it worth mentioning this bit I came across in a small book I happen to be reading this trip: Kaleidoscope City: A Year in Varanasi
Just a short book by some Euro travel writer, who spent a year in the ancient overpopulated Indian River town of Benares, trying to get a feel for the place. This part, on corruption of the Police struck me:
...He's the one too, who, who monitors transactions with the local Police, who regular bribes serve to keep silent.
Author: Are the Indian Police really as corrupt as everyone says?" I ask. "It's one of the great stereotypes. I know..."
Sangeeta shrugs, a gesture that seems to include acceptance and frustration in the same measure. "It's just completely ingrained here.' she says. 'One can't blame the individuals. Almost everyone in India is part of this conspiracy.'
I notice the anger in her face, the anger of a generation that wants change.
"We bribe the schools to get out kids admitted into nursery. We bribe to pay road tax, municipality tax, get a birth certificate, a death certificate, an electricity connection...The fact is India is a great creaking machine that needs rupees to grease the axles or nothing happens.
"I remember one foreigner telling me the biggest shock he had on moving to India was in realizing what it was like to live in a society where one can't trust the police,' Sangeeta says. 'That really struck me. I mean, it's equally incredible for us to imagine a society where one can trust them.'
"You said you don't blame the individuals who succumb to corruption?' I ask. 'That seems unduly compassionate. Why can't you" Surely, every one of them is making a choice at some stage?'
"Look, if the officers want promotion to the next rank they have to bribe their superiors an amount which is several times their annual salary. So they cannot get promotion without corruption. The system maintains itself. This is the subject, I think, that most foreigners simply cannot understand about India; the depth of corruption here, the level to which it's imbedded in every aspect of our society. New India wants to change, it wants to be modern and strong, but old India just keeps reaching out and holding us back. I can't tell you how much that pisses me off.'
------------------------
Anyhow, that bit about "it's equally incredible for us to imagine a society where one can trust them.'" really struck me, as I think we are so very fortunate to have our wonderful decent American police force, to the very great extent mostly trustworthy, which we often take for granted. Yet the Left in their pursuit of power via cultural, societal and political revolution is doing everything it can to demean them and trash them, and ultimately, whether the Left knows it or not, to force them for self protection to turn into the sort of partisan, corrupt and untrustworthy police forces rampant in India and Mexico and most of the rest of the world.

Posted by: glasater | September 02, 2015 at 03:32 PM<<<
I would at first blush be skeptical. The Iranian oil industry has been in a long term decline-well before international sanctions started to bite-and the labor pool to get their industry going isn't itching at the bit to get over there. There production peaked in the late 1970s, collapsed during the Iran-Iraq War and recovered-probably to its limit of 4 million/bbl a day-during the booming 1990s-2000s with foreign investment. The fields are old and technologically obsolete and the political risk of doing business there is probably as bad as cutting a deal with Russia or Venezuela.
the graph is busy, but shows total production of oil and gas (and future estimates)

I was struck, Janet, by Obama saying that while he was President the United States would lead the world in fighting climate change. I suspect he knows that the US population is central to skepticism over climate change and that his party and his party's candidate are going down, in part over the issue. But he's too indebted to the Tranzis, and so engaged by the power of the myth of Anthropogenic Catastrophe to give it up.

From the NY Times on this IT guy
Mr. Pagliano was the information technology director for Mrs. Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign and then worked at the State Department as an adviser and special projects manager for its chief technology officer, according to his LinkedIn page. He left the State Department in February 2013, the same month Mrs. Clinton stepped down as secretary of state.
It is not clear why Mr. Pagliano is refusing to answer questions about the server. The F.B.I. is investigating how classified information was handled in connection with the account, but no evidence has surfaced that Mr. Pagliano had anything to do with those materials.
And with this action (pleading the fifth) I'd say we have our candidate for felony charges. Special projects manager for the CTO? Indeed.

On this refugee problem, I hesitate to suggest the UN for anything, but I would think rather than expecting countries to take in hundreds of thousands of Syrians, the UN could set up DP camps like those at the end of WW II, for the women and children. Quick look at the polls as it relates to the CNN debate...
Using RCP - and using the original CNN debate rules - Carly would be in 11th at 2.9% in the polls, with Christie edging her out with 3.2%
Using the new rules - only poll since the 1st debate, Carly moves up to 7th place - passing Kasich, Huckabee, Paul, and Christie - all of whom would still be on the main stage if the decision were made today (we'd have 11 on the main stage, no one will be kicked off for not being in the top 10 since the first debate if they are still in the top 10 since 7/16).
However, using CNN's reason for altering their rules - that there just have not been enough post 1st debate polls - if we assume there were 3x as many polls (putting it roughly close to what CNN said happened in 2007 and 2011), and assuming those polls mirrored the ones that have come out since the first debate, Carly would be in 10th and Christie would be kicked off the main stage.
FWIW, no matter how you slice the polls, Christie comes in with 3.2%
