Beasts of England

Oh, yeah. I'm gonna tell the Bikini Babes that no one can sit abaft of me. That should keep them on their toes...

jimmyk

I know "ur" is correct for "err," but I don't say it because it sounds strange and even pretentious. I do use it for the first syllable of "urtext," which I've probably used once in my life (not counting this post).

Speaking of "ur" words, my mother always made a big deal about the difference between "further" and "farther," but that didn't make Pinker's list.

Ann

Beasts, You keep me laughing! Thanks :)

and LOL, Dave

Beasts of England

Thank you, Ann! This place has some serious weisenheimers - just glad to be a small part of it! :)

And that was hilarious Dave (in MA)!

Skoot

heh, Dave. A word of advice for the bionic muslim squad; when facing a Russian 125mm gun, Run!

Dave (in MA)
How many of you pronounce "err" as "air" vs. "ur"? Okay, now how do you pronounce the modifier "ur"? (ur-text, e.g.) As "you're" or "ur"?
I thought that was the millennial dipshit way of typing "your" or "you are".
Frau Duden

DrJ - the great rumble we hear is the crashing of standards. After awhile we will all say, "Meh..."

(You probably keep up with the spelling "reforms" in German, too. Somethings, however, stay the same: "Schiffahrt" vs "Schlifffläche.")

Dave (in MA)

I got a "meh" shirt from Woot.

When it arrived, I had exactly that reaction when I saw the quality of the fabric.

DrJ

Frau, I don't keep up on German. I have enough trouble with English!

Frau Duden

jimmyk - I'm with you about "err" and I absolutely never "beg the question." If you are correct, others think you are not. Who needs that?

Putin knows BOzo's Reign of Error comes to an end in 489 days. Hell, every thug in the world knows the bedwetter is on his way out, they know he's broke and every spare dime in the US goes to support black racists, they know the US readiness status is a shambles with political ass kissers commanding more stars than competent fighters.

Putin and every other thug would be absolute fools not to take advantage of the absolute vacuum between BOzo's ears by biting off a bit more than they can chew in the time remaining.

I'm a curmudgeon on usage, but much more so in writing than in speech.

I'll never forget the time that my first intern (nice guy, but dumb as a stump) said "My bad!" There was a pregnant pause, before I asked "Your bad WHAT?"

I had never heard it before. I may have to get out more.

Ann:
I am all in for Trump. He seems to be the only one with any guts.

Trump is a pretty good candidate. He makes the MSM and the GOPe dance like the little monkeys they are.

Yay Trump!

But I cannot - CANNOT - fathom any scenario in which he would make a capable president*.

I would like to vote for the person I think would make the best president. If that's the same person that most pisses off the right people, then super YAY!. But if the person who pisses off the right people would not make a good president, I can't support him.

I can't - in my own opinion and being true to my conscience on the matter - support Trump for the nominee.

I can support him for being a Trumpian-sized thorn up the azz of everyone. More power to him on that.

I think he would be a disaster as president.

----------------
*I made some rather incoherent remarks (I blame the animal rights protestor for throwing me off my game, not the 12 beers I had at the first restaurant before the others showed up) about the repercussions of a Trump presidency at the Berkeley meet up. I'd hate to have to try and gather my thoughts up enough to post it here. But you never know. It wouldn't be popular.

Worse than Obama, or just a disaster?

I find comparisons to Obama - in almost all cases - to be utterly useless. But let's say that Trump would not do anything to rein in the executive excesses and abuses of power of Obama, and would probably see fit to expand them when he thought that doing so would help "make America great" again.

I fear that there are those on the right who would cheer him doing so, because he was doing things they approved of.

That's really dangerous........

Qur'an (3:54) - "And they (the disbelievers) schemed, and Allah schemed (against them): and Allah is the best of schemers." The Arabic word used here for scheme (or plot) is makara, which literally means 'deceit'. If Allah is supremely deceitful toward unbelievers, then there is little basis for denying that Muslims are allowed to do the same. (See also 8:30 and 10:21)

Not if Trump would be seen as a one off by "those on the right who would cheer him".

The up side would be "those on the left who go into hissy fits" realize why it's a bad thing.

Nah, they are completely impervious to that level of rational thinking. As long as that's true game theory says "tit for tat" isn't about payback ... it's about survival.

Idk, hit. A runaway Trump might be bad for the country in the long run, but if he stops the invasion and puts some fiscal sanity to work in DC at least we'll have a "long run" to worry about. Right now I fear "down the road" is a pretty short haul the way things are going.

I went to college saying that a sad tale was heart "rendering" until a big fat, buck-toothed slob snarky classmate laughed and snickered. I corrected that quickly. As for rendering, my mother was a cook and later small restaurant owner;I grew up around restaurants; the smell of steam tables lives on in my nose. The new Army Secretary?

Early life[edit] Born and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan,[3][4] He graduated from Centerville High School in Ohio in 1986, after attending Cranbrook Schools in Michigan, and received his B.A. in history from Dartmouth College in 1990.[5] His interest in government and politics began when he participated in the 1988 New Hampshire primary contest.[6]

Career[edit]
In the 1990s, he was on the staff of the House Armed Services Committee and later a special assistant in the Immediate Office of the Secretary of Defense. He later served as Associate Director of Political Affairs at the White House.

He also worked at Business Executives for National Security, a Washington, D.C.-based think-tank and at Robinson, Lerer & Montgomery, a strategic communications firm in New York City.

He served as Deputy Under Secretary and Deputy Chief Management Officer for the Department of the Navy beginning in July 2009. He was also Deputy Director of the Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism.[7]

President Obama nominated him to be Under Secretary of the Air Force on August 1, 2012.[8] He testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee on February 28, 2013.[9] The U.S. Senate confirmed him on April 18, 2013.[10] He assumed the position of Acting Secretary of the Air Force upon the resignation of Michael Donley on June 21, 2013.[11]

He is the highest ranking openly gay member of the Department of Defense.[5] He was a member of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund from 2004 to 2007. He favors the adoption by the U.S. military of a policy prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. He has said: "I personally like to see these things in writing and codified." He has expressed a preference for the establishment of such a policy by the Department of Defense rather than the Obama administration: "My view about government is you should always use those resources that are available to you first before you move up to the next level, so I think there are a number of things we can do inside this building for the Department of Defense". He supports allowing openly transgender persons to serve in the military as well.[6]

My take from FOX News, Catherine Herridge's latest report I just saw on Brett's Show, is that the falsifying of the Intel reports goes back to at least 2012, leading to the conclusion that this was ordered by the Administration in order for them to say that pulling all the US troops out would not lead to negative consequences since the Intel people say it won't.

Brett: "Ignoring ISIS intel, and a Communist like work environment" those are just some of the allegations levied at the US Central Command as the scope of this investigation widens. Chief Intel reporter Heridge on just how deep the deception may run:

(Plays clip of Congressman Devin Nunes-R (House Intel Committee Chairman):
Nunes: I know for a fact that this was going on in 2012, because I was told by informants that this was going on, back then.

Herridge: The Chairman of the House Intel Committee says the disconnect between the grim, on the ground reporting about Al Quada as well as ISIS, and the rosy assessments circulating in Washington, is far more extensive than previously reported.

Nunes: We thought this was foolish, to pull all of our troops out of Iraq, We thought, just from our own work, that this would be bad, but the Administration was able to say "No, this is what the Intelligence says."

Herridge; While Mister Obama last year referred to ISIS as "The JV team", and Al Quada as "decimated", Nunes suspicions were further confirmed by a 2013 incident at Florida's US Central Command, where the Osama Bin Ladin documents were analyzed. The Congressman went to Florida for a briefing on the documents, which was blocked, and he was wrongly told that the experts were not available.

Nunes: We found out that not only were they there, they were prepared to brief. Somebodies got to answer that question as to why they would not let us have access to those analysts.

Herridge: The same group of analysts who handled the Bin Ladin documents are now lodging complaints about the ISIS Intelligence assessments that allegedly hyped battlefield damage by the US Air Campaign, and minimized the groups resilience. The White House today insisted no one in the Administration pressured anyone.

(Runs tape of Josh Ernest lying)

Herridge:...The House Intel Committee is now encouraging more "Whistle Blowers" to come forward and offering full Congressional protection.

At the very least a person must believe that Jesus Christ is God incarnate & that He died to take the punishment for our sins & that HE rose again. A person must believe that Jesus Christ is the ONLY way of salvation. It is His work on the cross, not my efforts, that save.

Err, let's go to the Source, shall we?

Genesis 11-12 - Where was Abraham's Ur?

11:31 Terah took Abram his son and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife, and they went forth together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go into the land of Canaan, but when they came to Haran, they settled there.

Bible Commentary: The problem is that there are several places called Ur. It is identified as "Ur of the Chaldeans." The problem with "Chaldeans" is that it is a late word used in the Neo-Babylonian times.

So is it Ur, or err, Ur of the Chaldeans?

Bible Commentary: If Ur were located in Southern Iraq, why would Abraham travel 60 miles way out of his way to go to Haran?...There are two cities not far from Haran; Ura and Urfa. Local tradition says that Abraham was born in Urfa. Northern Ur is mentioned in tablets at Ugarit, Nuzi, and Ebla, which refers to Ur, URA, and Urau

Errr, somehow that didn't make it any clear to me. How 'bout you guys?

Bible Commentary: All this evidence taken together seems to indicate that the Ur of Abraham was in the same region as Haran in Northern Mesopotamia, and not the famous Ur in Southern Mesopotamia.

Sounds to me like he's a Tower of Babel (Genesis 11)

Oh well. All's I know is that to err is human but to Ur is divine.
