NYT reporting Boehner steppng down at end of October
No more info than this.

WSJ piling on the reporting on Boehner

Threadkiller

WASHINGTON — Speaker John A. Boehner will resign from Congress and give up his House seat at the end of October, according to aides in his office.

Mr. Boehner was under extreme pressure from the right wing of his conference over whether or not to defund Planned Parenthood in a bill to keep the government open.

My local talk program on our NPR station happens to be talking with Carl Bernstein, who is leaving now to report this story.

So PJ O'Rourke will carry on alone.

Threadkiller

Why give up his House seat?

Thin skin about losing the leadership?

Marlene

No wonder he was crying yesterday. Looks like he's going to announce soon, the microphones are set up.

Janet S.

Wow! Totally resigning from Congress.
There must be some scandal....

Janet S.

Wow.

Miss Marple 2

Boehner IS resigning!

Threadkiller

Probably Obama's veto pen got the best of him.

Sue

I bet he has cancer.

Threadkiller

Maybe the threat of a non-GOPe President was too much for him to handle.

jimmyk

Here's the NYT spin (and maybe the FBI's) on classified e-mails:

The FBI is trying "to determine whether aides to Mrs. Clinton mishandled delicate national security information when they communicated with their boss."

There is no evidence that any of the emails — a small portion of some 60,000 that Mrs. Clinton sent or received as secretary of state — were hacked or caused any harm to American interests, and law enforcement officials have said she is not a target of their investigation. But one of the questions they are seeking to answer is whether her aides or other State Department officials broke federal rules or laws when they sent her information. And arriving at an answer will not be simple, given the complex and often conflicting views of just how diplomatically fragile the information conveyed in the emails actually was.

So the fact that she had her own personal e-mail address that she gave her subordinates, rather than the secure government e-mail is just a quibble, I guess. The buck stops with her aides.

More cartoons out of UN as well as a confession that data gathered from the Internet of Things and held throughout governments will be used to change the nature of government to meet Un goals. http://www.uschamberfoundation.org/article/addressing-inequality-and-data-divide

I hope we do not end up with an even worse speaker.

Marlene

My little birdy just sent a text. He was going to prevent a government shut down and the (insert bad word) would have brought up a motion to vacate the chair. So,he's like, see ya losers.

Threadkiller

Bill Hemmer said Boehner is a "Jesuit to the core."

I think he was talking about whether Boehner was going to interrupt the Pope's UN speech.

Janet S.

Yeah, Sue....maybe something like that.

Boehner was such a supporter of the tea party movement at the beginning. He'd come speak at small rallies. He's always been pro-life too.

It was kinda weird how he pulled away.

narciso

of course, this is why huma signed up mcbride's deputy as her atty, of course it's the ic ig, who turned these things up, so winning the future?

Threadkiller

Last week McClintock left the Cacus that pushed Boehner the hardest.

jimmyk,

It appears Abedin is the target but Mills is in just as deep - as are the briefers who passed stringently classified material without complete documentation. Red Witch simply received and held classified information in contravention of the Espionage Act.

The head of the Coven Espionage Ring is therefore obviously innocent.

henry

Well, now we will have open war between the anti-spenders and Obama. Note Obama has the press and pope on his side. This may be a pyrrhic victory for sanity.

Threadkiller

A lot of smiling "unnamed sources" heading up and down the hallway next to where Boehner is going to speak.

Every one of the grinning idiots stop and chat with the media who then start typing furiously into their iPhones.

Threadkiller

Callers to Cspan agree that Boehner was a useless tool. This is from both the Dem and the GOP lines.

Nobody has mentioned that he was impeded by Obama.

What is with these ignorant callers? Don't they know holding the House and the Senate isn't enough power?

http://www.undatarevolution.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/A-World-That-Counts2.pdf on page 5 (7 of pdf) states that data will be used to close the gap between the public and private sectors.

Doesn't that mean the end of a genuinely private sector? Private providers of government stipulated needs?

YOU WON’T HAVE JOHN BOEHNER TO KICK AROUND ANYMORE: Boehner Will Resign From Congress. This is a sign, I think, that the GOP establishment has finally figured out that the root of Trumpmania is the failure of the Boehner-McConnell Congress to deliver despite the big electoral wins of 2014. a deep sense of creeping doom and that it is already done.

henry

rse, why did I read that UN thing you linked? They want sharing, as in they get my stuff and work product and I get bupkis. Move the UN HQ to Benghazi and drop our membership and contribution.

Beasts of England

I'd guess this about his health, or that of a loved one. No earthly way that anyone with enough clout to matter gives a big whoop about the will of the people or their constituents. The timing doesn't speak to that at all. And I hope I'm wrong, but I'm probably not.

rich@gmu

Iggy-

Could someone shoot Richard Branson who says he's prepared to shoulder the short term cost of moving from cheap, useful energy to the useless, expensive variety?

Billionaires are always willing to shoulder the costs of new boondoggles they can profit from and which eat up >1% of their billions even if they don't.
It's the poor whose shoulders get crushed.

Ig, why hasn't he paid to convert England from his own pocket as an example to the rest of us? Simple, he's not an idiot and knows it wont work. Spending our tax money suits his marketing needs for up-twinkles.

Captain Hate on the iPad

If OrangeDrank is taking attention away from Che's natterings to the UN tools, I'd like to buy Johnny a drink.

Porchlight

Well, according to what I'm reading, he wanted to resign awhile back but after Cantor got booted he figured he'd better wait until McCarthy was ready to step in. (It will be McCarthy, you can bank on that.)

It doesn't sound health-related to me. I doubt it had anything to do with the Pope, either, except that he waited until after the address to Congress to announce, so as not to step on it.

Art in Newport

But why resign his seat in the House? Did he not want to just be a face in the crowd after being the head man? Health issues?

I guess we'll know soon enough.

Captain Hate on the iPad

I agree with Jane on McCarthy.

James D

All I want to know is, can we get rid of McTurtle next?

Janet

Speaker isn't coming...he went out the back door.

henry

Art, moving from a CEO spot to a random cubicle is not a natural act. Our lurking unit expects him to replace the head of the Chamber of Cronies (the other half of Crony - Control over GOPe)

James D

I agree with CH and Jane re: the next speaker.

narciso

OrangeDrank had no leadership skills, which was the primary strike against him. How many times did he go on the gab shows compared to the Reid-Pelosi Insane Clown Cadre? They are Exhibits A & B that you don't have to have a functioning cortex to get in front of the camera as part of your job. He was a miserable failure in that regard plus he had no regard for his party members compared to the donks.

McCarthy only came to the House in 2007. Being second in command so soon seems unusual. Did Boehner appoint McCarthy, whose distinct includes Bakesfield, CA, to his post? Or was McCarthy elected by members too?

Johnny B's departure must be Top Men's reaction to the polling numbers of all these meddlesome outsiders and not just Trump. They've already tried to get their hit men at Politico to do what they can but the disenchantment with the GOPe careerists continues. Maybe McCarthy will try a few meaningless show votes on things they halfheartedly support as a "see what we tried" exercise in hogwash.

WaPo on Jeb's response to a SC town hall question yesterday:

"Look around this room," a man told Bush, who spoke to a mostly white crowd. "How many black faces do you see? How are you going to include them and get them to vote for you?" asked the man, who was white.

Bush pointed to his record on school choice and said that if Republicans could double their share of the black vote, they would win the swing states of Ohio and Virginia.

"Our message is one of hope and aspiration," he said at the East Cooper Republican Women’s Club annual Shrimp Dinner. "It isn't one of division and get in line and we'll take care of you with free stuff. Our message is one that is uplifting -- that says you can achieve earned success."

Reaction from blacks has not been kind.

jimmyk

McCarthy was elected by the House Republicans. From what I've read, he's a great networker, and glad-hander, which is how he has risen so quickly. He seems to be pretty conservative, but from how he operates I would be surprised if he is very different from Boehner in his approach (if he becomes Speaker).

GUS

He'll have so much more time to golf with Obama.

Which is nice.

Extraneus

Reaction from blacks has not been kind.

Beasts-look at that report. I just finished it and it is worse than I think I have ever seen put into language in one place.

I actually disagree with you and so do off the record comments by profs at some of the nation's most prestigious schools. They all tell me quietly that our 'best' students just do not know much factually anymore.

My high schooler has apparently decided to skip her high school graduation. Part of it is nager over the refusal for 4 years to teach anything while married teachers have affairs with other teachers and get pregnant while all still teaching and teachers having affairs with students and no one stopping it.

Apparently the final straw was the graduation gown rental charge of $150. She is guessing a big part of that is going in someone's pocket. It was $50 4 years ago at her sibling's graduation and they kept gown.

GUS

The fact that no blacks were there to see Jeb says a hell of a lot more about blacks, than it does about Jeb Bush.

Black America has been bought by the left. Every single day the left hammers a new wedge. THAT is the PROBLEM. The left has sold a tale of America that is false, and the MEDIA and INSTITUTIONS including schools have FED the FALSE NARATIVE. To capitulate to a racial hate mongering group like BLACK LIVES MATTER is a perfect example.
