Was a Wonder Woman lunch box really banned from a school because it depicted a violent character? Snopes says "unsubstantiated" and "dubious". Heidi MacDonald concludes that if we don't know it is true, it must be false. Really?
In a fine day for the "Macs", Jim MacQuarrie delivers more nuance, marvelling at the credulity of the internet world and the absence of any attempt at fact-checking by ostensibly professional outlets.
As to Snopes, one of their points is this:
Moreover, the Wonder Woman lunch box shown in the photograph is made of metal (a style of school lunch tote that has fallen out of favor). Unsubstantiated rumors hold that a metal lunch box ban has been in effect in schools since at least the 2000s; and while that may or may not be true in individual school districts, a browse of current lunch box offerings suggests that even plastic, hard-sided boxes have ceded market share to soft, zippered totes. By contrast, metal lunch boxes are primarily sold as collectibles or novelties in most retail markets.
Do tell. Meanwhile, I can find this very lunchbox online for $12-$27. Or sold out for $16, which reminds me of what ought to have been a Soviet era joke.
So, is this tale true or just morally uplifting catnip?
FOR MY MONEY: Wonder Woman's outfit probably violates most school's dress codes, not to mention that she is an idealized and sexualized Action Barbie. Totally unlike Thor and Superman, I might add, who are not only less scantily clad but are getting by on everything except their muscles and good looks.
NO REPORTING FOR OLD MEN: I ought to recycle this chestnut:
In "No Country For Old Men", Tommy Lee Jones told a parable meant to encourage a potential witness to cooperate. His success led to this exchange:
Carla Jean Moss: Sheriff, was that a true story about Charlie Walser?
Ed Tom Bell: Who's Charlie Walser? Oh! Well... uh... a true story? I couldn't swear to every detail but it's certainly true that it is a story.
It's true that it is a story.
Only boys dressed as Wonder Woman are allowed in schools.

Contempt of court - she didn't follow a federal judge's order (lawful, since the Supreme Court declined to review it) so he ordered her to jail.
Of course, Dred Scott didn't end the Underground Railroad either.

Way OT-
Went to the Minnesota State Fair yesterday. Hot!!!!
At the Republican booth set up they were doing a straw poll (corn in 2 gallon jugs) of all the current republican candidates. Carly Fiorina's jug was just two inches from being full. Then Walker, Jindal, Kasich about 2/3 full, Cruz and Jeb jug was only 3 inches from bottom. The rest barely there. It really surprised me to see Carly in the lead.
Makes me feel better about Minnesota. Just moved here about 6 weeks ago from Ohio.
Oh and not much traffic at the Dem. booth (yay!)

henry-can no longer bring in food from restaurants outside of school so the trick is to go somewhere like qdoba and ask them to put it just in foli but not container, like a quesadilla. They nod and say "going to a school". then you put the foil quesadilla under gym shorts and a t shirt. Take to school and give to child as the 'clothes' they forgot for after school.
At least this is what I have heard. Never break any bureaucratic rules myself.

I think it was Carson recently who made the point there's a difference between information and knowledge. The inside the beltway types put a premium on regurgitating information, like names of terrorist group leaders. Those folks know the names, the Trumps of the world know what to do with them. If they're hurting Americans, they die.

That's a good point, James D. I just hate to see a person who has correctly identified the enemy having to fight both sides. Fox Butterfield approves this message.

Good Morning!
Just awoke in the hotel and turned on CNN. Some top Police type in Chicago was giving a press briefing on the 3 suspects on the run who shot dead the policeman a few days back. He mentioned that videos from various sites adjacent to the location of the killing had been shipped to Homeland Security for analysis, but something like after 3 days at Homeland Security they had still not been returned to the Chicago authorities so that the info on the videos could be acted upon.
At the end of the press conference CNN brought in their guest, a retired FBI Agent from the area. He said that what he heard in the briefing concerning Homeland Security having had various videos from locations for 3 days without returning them to agents in the field was incomprehensible. He said, very matter of factly, that 10 years previous in such a case when he was working that they would simply take the video, give it to a pilot or a courier on board a commercial jet leaving for DC, and 3 hours later the agents in Quantico would be going thru the tape and the info would have been processed and sent back to the agents in the field immediately. He was completely dismissive of Homeland Security, wondering why they are even involved and gumming up the works for 3 days so far, when this should have been completed immediately.
I didn't know him, but he seemed like a Joe Friday-'No Nonsense' sort, and he convinced me that Homeland Security is just another incompetent behemoth of a bureaucracy, screwing up the works that in the past could be done in a jiffy.

yeah daddy, that is not good. Fox Lake is just south of the border. The three perps could have walked anywhere, say follow the river north to my area (25 miles roughly). DHS just slows things down, from law enforcement to air travel. Our Chitown lurker's opinion is:
You can tell daddy that those tapes (hope they weren't the only set) were sent to DC for political cleansing. The "Real" copies will be returned after a quick spin dry.
Political cleansing means making sure the "whites" can't be ID'd as dreamers or Syrian refuges.

"who's energizing the base"
Beasts,
75% of Americans disapprove of Congress, 64% believe the country is on the wrong track. The actual audience for the Trump Show is much greater than the GOP base of around 30% but I would not characterize applause for the bleeding obvious as evidence of people being "energized". Carson and Fiorina are both reaping plaudits for the same reason Trump is, general disgust at the quality of hookers employed in the Parliament of Whores.
I stopped paying attention to Hewitt when he became a champion for Sir Goldilocks as the answer. He's just banging pots for attention now and his antics are not even amusing anymore.
I really don't know how much farther Trump can go with his sticking his thumbs in his ears and blowing raspberries responses. Carson and Fiorina may be at the top of the bill rather shortly.

Posted by: narciso | September 04, 2015 at 02:36 PM
The line of inquiry Trump labels as “gotcha” questions is no different from what Hewitt has been asking the entertainer-turned-candidate and other presidential contenders throughout the year. For instance, Hewitt asked Trump in February if he’d read The Looming Tower, Lawrence Wright’s masterful book on the roots of Al Qaeda and the Sept. 11 attacks. It’s a question Hewitt asks nearly everyone who appears on the show, including Jeb Bush, who appeared the same February afternoon as Trump. Neither man had read it. During those February interviews, Hewitt also asked both Trump and Bush about funding the Ohio Class nuclear submarines, a topic that’s known among journalists as another of the host’s obsessions. [HuffPo]
Thank goodness Hugh Hewitt's there to ask the burning questions America wants answered. Along with Dana Bash and Jake Tapper, Hewitt will be offering similar gotchas at the next Republican debate too.

MD Sen. Cardin says NO to BOzo's Iran giveaway.
To avoid all that [Boxo having to veto], Obama’s supporters need four of the six remaining undeclared Senate Democrats to come out in favor of the Iran nuclear deal. WaPo on the uncommitted Dems:
"The undeclared are a variegated set. There’s Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), who says the deal is far from perfect — but also agrees with Obama, that no deal could be. He is coming under intense pressure from anti-deal groups, especially because he is the last undecided Jewish Senate Democrat. There’s also Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), who has praised the administration’s diplomatic efforts, but has stayed mum on how he will vote. Both have left themselves enough room to be potential support votes on Iran. Then there’s Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), who is up for reelection next year, and Sens. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and Gary Peters (D-Mich.), who have been keeping such a low profile that it’s difficult to know what they’re thinking. Peters was an original co-sponsor of the Kirk-Menendez sanctions bill on Iran, which was ultimately set aside. And finally there’s Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), who has spoken about how skeptical he is that the deal.
Sen. Bennet (CO) is supposedly the most endangered Dem in 2016.

Trump's point (which I agree with) is that as we drone and as they behead each other, the top players are in constant flux and cutting off the head won't stop the rest of the barbarians. Who needs to know who to 'deal with?' Blanket carpet bombing and some Warthogs will deal with them in the only language they know. You don't 'deal with' or have diplomatic dialog with barbarians. Bottom line, who gives a f@ck what their names are... kill em all.
