Barack "Buy High" Obama on the political process, as reported by CNN:
Obama on debate: Nothing patriotic 'about talking down America'
Washington (CNN)As Republican presidential candidates lay into his record, President Barack Obama on Wednesday chalked up the attacks to expected election-year politics but said there was "nothing particularly patriotic" about their rhetoric.
"Despite the perennial doom and gloom that I guess is inevitably part of a presidential campaign, America is winning right now," Obama said at a meeting of the Business Roundtable in Washington. "America is great right now. We can do even better."
He cited job creation, the rising stock market and millions of Americans who now have health insurance as examples of a successful presidential run.
I'm sorry, is he questioning the patriotism of his critics? This is from the transcript:
I’m here to say that there’s nothing particularly patriotic or American about talking down America, especially when we stand as one of the few sources of economic strength in the world.
groan. And for a quick bit of history - under Bush the stock market peaked in, yes, September 2007, 14 months before the election. Maybe like now? Let's hope not! But does anyone think a rising stock market in 2007 proved Bush had everything working?
And I bet if I looked up some Obama rhetoric from 2007 I could find one or two criticisms of Bush. Maybe even some suggesting that Iraq was an utter failure. It was only later that even Obama kinda sorta admitted that the surge had been a military success, which he subsequently squandered.
DOWN MEMORY LANE: Here in the NY Times archives is a gem from Aug 22, 2007:
Obama Sees a ‘Complete Failure’ in Iraq
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 21 — Senator Barack Obama said Tuesday that even if the military escalation in Iraq was showing limited signs of progress, efforts to stabilize the country had been a “complete failure” and American troops should not be entangled in the sectarian strife.
“No military surge, no matter how brilliantly performed, can succeed without political reconciliation and a surge of diplomacy in Iraq and the region,” Mr. Obama said. “Iraq’s leaders are not reconciling. They are not achieving political benchmarks.”
That was patriotic? And if by "complete failure" he meant "partial success", then we are all in agreement.
As to the future of Iraq, here is a campaign idea from Aug 11, 2007 that went under the bus when his re-election loomed:
Democrats Say Leaving Iraq May Take Years
DES MOINES, Aug. 11 — Even as they call for an end to the war and pledge to bring the troops home, the Democratic presidential candidates are setting out positions that could leave the United States engaged in Iraq for years.
...
Senator Barack Obama of Illinois would leave a military presence of as-yet unspecified size in Iraq to provide security for American personnel, fight terrorism and train Iraqis.
These positions and those of some rivals suggest that the Democratic bumper-sticker message of a quick end to the conflict — however much it appeals to primary voters — oversimplifies the problems likely to be inherited by the next commander in chief. Antiwar advocates have raised little challenge to such positions by Democrats.
Cut and run came later then.
Closer to home, an August debate spent a very brief time with what I guess Obama would characterize as an unpatriotic discussion of a looming mortgage crisis. Obviously those fears (if not the policy proposals) were ultimately vindicated despite a rising stock market. Yet eight years later people with worries about our economic future are just engaging in politics as usual and unpatriotically talking down America?
If we want a President who is a bit more humble and less in love with himself than the current office holder we really could use Trump.
“I'm sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and disagree with this administration, somehow you're not patriotic. We need to stand up and say we're Americans, and we have the right to debate and disagree with any administration.”
You tell 'em,

On the pollution spill in the Colorado Rover by the EPA, Brett plays video of the EPA's Gina McCarthy getting hammered for revisionism during testimony by Chariman Josh Chaffetz at todays EPA Hearings:
McCarthy: Sir, I have indicated that our notifications could have been better, but that the uhhh, the Navajo was given...
Chaffetz: No you didn't. In your testimony you said that you were working closely with them. You didn't say you screwed up on the communication. Why would it take two days?
McCarthy: I did say that we did take a day Sir. I regret that.
etc.

Just as an aside, it is amazing how much time was taken up at our Union Meeting yesterday, discussing the HealthCare revisions in our Tentative New Contract that the company and the Union Negotiating Committee have had to deal with with as a result of mandates in the ObamaCare regulations. The meeting was supposed to be for 2 hours 30 minutes. There are 28 sections in the new Contract, only a dozen or so of which had to have any changes from the previous contract, and the explanation/discussion simply of the HealthCare Section took almost 45 minutes, and had a dedicated HealthCare guy to deal with the issue, plus 2 lawyers sitting by and kibitzing in different points of explanation when needed.
It was all over my head, and is going to take me hours of homework and watching videos to figure out which of the 3 major Plans proposed that I should opt for, should this Contract be agreed upon.

Despite Deb and Barbara's doubts, the old guy Pete who sits next to me really liked Fiorina and asked me what I thought.

The few bits I heard of Levin in today's first hour sure sounded to me like he was ignoring the reality of Carly's outstanding performance yesterday, and at the same time was disingenuous in his praising of some of Trump's rather boneheaded comments last night (ie.-vaccinations.)
I suppose we are all subject to it, me especially, but its not good when get so wedded to a candidate (even when we don't think we're getting wedded to that candidate) that we overlook or ignore their real faults and invent faults in their opponents that don't exist.
I hate to see Levin doing that, but in the little I heard of him today it seemed to me like that was what he was doing.

daddy,
Agree with you about getting wedded to a candidate, especially too early.
It is why I try to concentrate on defeating democrats rather than dwelling on someone winning.
My personal decision is that I will vote for whoever gets the nomination: Trump, Christie, Fiorina, Huckabee, whatever.
I like some more than others, but my bottom line is that we have to get these people currently in power out of government.
So whoever gets the nomination, I may privately cringe, but in public they will be the neatest thing since sliced bread.
That is why I try to avoid working up a hate on any of the candidates. And it is why I am upset about the destructive attacks on Trump followers. We will need them come the general election.

Love Mark Levin but he was off base in his opening monologue today about Carly and Donald. Levin also has a habit of using a word that doesn't exist: assimilization.
But other than that I do think he is a pretty smart guy.
Posted by: peter | September 17, 2015 at 09:46 PM
Mark Levin on Carly:
4. Going in, I believe the establishment media were poised to declare Carly Fiorina a victor over Trump and most of the field as she has become one of the establishment favorites. The indications were everywhere. In fact, most of the same voices and writers who opposed Trump and before him Cruz are singing her praises today. They are no longer concerned about lack of governing background of an outsider or flip-flopping, etc. I remember in the 2010 GOP Senate primary race in California she staked out the moderate Republican position against State Representative Chuck DeVore. She didn't sound like a traditional, Reagan conservative back then. And her response to the birthright citizenship questions were wrong and jumbled. In fact, Trump has a superior understanding of the issue. Rand Paul reluctantly had to agreed. And in that Senate campaign, Fiorina mocked Barbara Boxer's looks (understandable), a fact ignored by Tapperl ast night. Why? The audio is public. Finally, her record as a corporate CEO is mixed. But do not expect it to be scrutinized by her cheerleaders in and out of the media. But the Democrats won't ignore it. Let me be clear: I have nothing against Fiorina, but there's reason to be at least a little skeptical.

I am old enough to remember when Colin Powell was still an actual Republican -- and led all those test polls for the Republican nomination. I'm thinking that was in 1999, or thereabouts.
Here in Washington state, women have done very well in the Republican party.
Secretary of state: Kim Wyman (the only statewide elected Republican on the West Coast)
Washington 5th: Cathy McMorris Rodgers
Washington 3rd: Jaime Herrera Beutler
(McMorris Rodgers is the best in the delegation, in my opinion.
Both have born children while serving in Congress, which impresses this guy -- a lot. Both, I suspect, have very supportive husbands. Rodgers husband is a retired Navy guy, by the way.)
party chair: Susan Hutchison (It's jard to tell from a distance, but I think she's been better than her two predecessors.
Nothing new about this, either. Many of us still miss Jennifer Dunn, who passed away in 2005. (She had been party chair -- and served six terms in Congress.)
Despite all that the Democrats still use the old "war on women" bit in elections here -- and it seems to have some effect.
