Deb-are you close to 75? I am driving that stretch in about two weeks.

Janet

What the F is she talking about?

She's giving a speech on foreign policy.

maryrose

I for one am happy about Paul Ryan as Speaker
I saw him in person in Cleveland and was impressed

PD

She is uglier on the inside far more than the outside. Her eyes tell the story.

Jane

HB Narc! Hope it's great!

maryrose

Janet
It is all about saying Chris Stevens knew how dangerous it was
The rest is boilerplate

Miss Marple 2

I am SO hoping they hid some information from Cummings and the dems.

Janet

She's telling us what was in Steven's mind.
He knew...
Chris understood...

maryrose

No acknowledgment of dropping g the ball in Benghazi and screwing up

Jim Eagle

I am hearing her correctly? It seems like she is giving a eulogy for Stevens.

Miss Marple 2

Janet,

Not only is this a foreign policy speech but also a dramatic reading, akin to senior high school speech classes.

Also, I think they have decided if they say "leadership" enough, people will think there actually is some.

henry

Yes Janet, that is why he emailed asking for more security... Hilligula didn't even read those emails as she was too busy selling policy for CFI cash.

Captain Hate on the iPad

Was Gowdy's open letter to Cummings supposed to stop him from acting like a partisan shill?

PD

I have heard enough. Off to the clink for you Hillarity.

rse

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/sce.3730650104/abstract is an example of Herbert Walberg's educational interests.

Note that it also has him as an ed prof at the same place that made Bill Ayers one.

It's also where CASEL--ground zero for social and emotional learning as the primary emphasis is located.

Michael (fpa Patriot4Freedom)

Hil-LIAR-y's defense:

1- She did nothing wrong, and has been absolved by the ARB inquiry.
2- This committee is partisan - seven previous investigations have cleared her.
3- Look, squirrel! - Let us all ignore Benghazi, and look at other attacks around the world.

Miss Marple 2

This is such BS in her speech that I can hardly stand it.

maryrose

Going back to Reagan to say this happened on Repub watch
More people than the Benghazi 4
Brings up 9/11

Janet

Hilligula didn't even read those emails

That's be a good question for her.
How do you know what Chris knew & understood if you didn't even read his emails?

Did you give your good friend Chris Stevens your private email?

Miss Marple 2

Aha! She has now segued into a campaign speech.

narciso

more like Mogadishu, the administration then, left the heroes to their own devices, I think the excuse
then, was the Russian parliamentary crisis, they covered up the truth, until Mark Bowden dug it up,
but Bin Laden learned a lesson from that,

Threadkiller

Happy Birthday Narciso!

Sue

Her voice grates on me. More so than Obama's.

Cecil Turner

Good obfuscation by the witch. Allows the MSM to provide fair coverage by running any particular clip of Gowdy's, an accusation by Cummings, and pablum from Hillary.

Bottom line: she weathers this one.

Janet

Now she's giving a candidate speech.
She might end with "vote for me".

maryrose

Count me unimpressed

Jim Eagle

Thanks, Hillary for bringing up the Beirut bombins which ironically was 32 years ago tomorrow, 10/23.

Janet

Aha! She has now segued into a campaign speech.

Hah! We both noticed, MM.

maryrose

Cecil
I disagree
The optics of this are horrendous

Texas Liberty Gal

I'm recording the Hearing so I can FF thru the Dems-can't bear to listen to any of them especially Hillary. Thanks MM for reporting on what they say. Gowdy was awesome in the Opening stmt.

Miss Marple 2

Well, now she is laying the idea for Libya on the UK and France.

henry

Editing maryrose. We are screwed, as expected.

Miss Marple 2

I missed most of Gowdy's opening statement, so hopefully it will show up on the internet later.

Miss Marple 2

First cackle!!

Old Lurker

It is already on YouTube MM. Search "Gowdy Opening Statement" and sort by date.

narciso

yes it was a confederacy of dunces, why exactly was it necessary to topple Muammar at this time?

Miss Marple 2

HA! Good question! Gates, VP Biden and others in National Security Council opposed intervention in Libya, but YOU convinced President Obama, didn't you?

Appalled

I made some harsh comments on the prior thread re the Freedom Caucus, because I really do think their inability to get to any sort of yes answer is tactically foolish. I accept they are principled. They need to accept they are not even close to the majority of their caucus, and there are limits to what even the most regimented minority can do. (I also think, from a tactical standpoint, what they want in terms of policy and what they want in terms of House structure are going to be at war with each other for years to come.)

That said, they are in the middle of a negotiating process to get the best deal possible for themselves. Harsh statements and the appearance of unreasonableness are part of that. The real problem they have is that Ryan does not want the job, and is probably in a better negotiating position than the Freedom Caucus, which seems to have gone into this situation without a Plan B.

Captain Hate on the iPad

Yes, the strategy of dealing with GhaDaffy Duck was as obtuse as any of 404/Broomstick's Mideast howlers.

narciso

well having to save their bacon, doesn't render one
too understanding of the task,

henry

GP has Gowdy vid here.

Miss Marple 2

So, she doesn't think Libya is a disaster.

Now here is Cummings, and I just cannot listen to him. Stronger stomachs will have to take over.

Janet

Libya is Hillary's personal foreign policy accomplishment.
She owns Libya.
A preview of what we can expect from a President Hillary.

I remind you this guy was a tool of the junta before 9/11.(should have stopped after tool)

Tell that to the homos.

Captain Hate on the iPad

The donks make policy gains when they haven't got the numbers. This habit of excusing the GOPe because they don't have the numbers means you could be effectively represented by a ten key adding machine.

The Constitutional Convention didn't have the numbers. That's not to say that every skirmish will result in victory but a defeat will always happen if you give up in advance.

Stephanie

Someone activated the emotion chip today.

Happy birthday, narciso!

narciso

is anybody going to rebut the feckless idiocy of Baba Yaga, I think I have the right metaphor,

Michael (fpa Patriot4Freedom)

Dems are still excoriating George W. Bush for toppling Saddam Hussein and "plunging Iraq into chaos."

Sounds like the Repubs are going to hammer home the point that Hil-LIAR-y was responsible for toppling Muammar Khadafy and "plunging Libya into chaos."

Hil-LIAr-y's already trying to dance away from her role in promoting the Libyan overthrow.

Janet

Yeah, TK...or the transgender community!

Pro-lifers FILM lawbreaking & we are told to shut up. I'm not gonna shut up anymore.

CH:

The question on the table is the FC walking away from Ryan and keeping Boehner on the chair, or accepting Ryan's conditions. The longer that question stays on the table, the longer the FC shows its inability to force anything on anybody. That's impotence, not strength.

Janet

Elijah Cummings is totally relying on the WaPo for his facts.
Dems feed info to the WaPo...& then the Dems use the WaPo as their proof! What a system.

squaredance

I do not know why you cannot see the obvious: Trumps appeal is easy to understand.

!) First and foremost, he openly speaks out against the immigration plague upon us and rightly see it as a profound threat to our way of life.

2) He speaks out against globalism, at least in its current form.

3) He speaks in a normal, regular manner, and speaks about real thinks. He does not come off as a elitist corrupt politician. He does not come off as one of these ridiculous, over-educated, ill-educated policy wonks. He call it as he sees it. He does not gush out double speak or "liberalise".

4) He is not intimidated by the elites, particularity the media, and, most particularly, the Feminist branch of said media.

5) In his life, he has proven that he can get more or less what he sets his mind to.

6) He obviously cares about the country. He is a patriot. Yes, that is right, a patriot.

7) He knows that the GOP Establishment is weak, corrupt and dishonest. This shines through in his rhetoric, and is a major subtext of his message.

His supporters are not idiots, they are not rubes, they are "having temper tantrums". People here really need to stop framing them this way. They are just exposing their own snobbery and egoism, and doing so quite comically at that, given their own place in the scheme of things. It is our "educated" class, the middle-middle class voters that are buffoons, and it is they who have been continuously duped by the GOP's fake conservatism.

These things are getting pretty clear:

1_ If the GOP Establishment wages war against Trump they will lose his supporters, and most likely the non-ideological working class voters who may agree with Trump but not like him personally. These are not just people who have not before considered the GOP, these are also the bedrock of the GOP rank and file. Both groups will turn from the Party. The shock of the betrayal of the electorate after all the work that was put in to get the Hill back seems to be seem radically underestimated by some here. I am telling you that the GOP is hanging on by its fingernails outside the beltway. Do not let the advances at the local level fool you. thy can be undone in a couple of election cycles should the GOP not fix itself.

2) Carson will not get the nomiation, at least not for the top slot, and he will certainly not get elected. This country will not elect another black POTUS for a least a geneation. He will not capture the Black vote, but only peel off some on the edges. The Black "community" so far as electoral poiltics goes is owned part and parcel by the Democrats, if only for the simple reason that they in large number rely on government jobs, government "patronage", and the protected status they have been given to get by. In large cites, this is no joke. without it they would starve given current arrangements. It is true that they also live in a false consciousness, but that will take generations to change. The hispanics will not vote for Carson. Period.

(All if this in not to say that Carson would not make a fine POTUS. Of course he would. He might get on the VP slot, but even this is unlikely.)

3) Cruz might manage to somehow to get the nomination, but he will not win against the democrat Machine, particularly if the GOP establishment is against him, or is too destructive in the run up to the nomination.
He is right about everything he says, but he is too intellectual for the electorate, too lacking in Charisma. He too would make a fine president, maybe even a great one, and he too might even make the VP slot--this is more likely than Carson.

4) Jeb will never, ever be elected POTUS. This country is not going to elect another Bush, at least not in a generation. Hillary will eat him for lunch.

You tell me, who is left? Certainly not the RIno squishes, certainly not Paul.

Some bemoan the fact that the rest of the GOP cannot co-opt the voters aligned with Trump and snag his voters. The reason for that is simple: They do now believe what he is saying, and they detest his supporters and everything they stand for. They are cut from the same smug, and snotty elitist cloth as the Dems. They do not really care about the country at all. In fact, the cynicism that has guided their "success" has corrupted their should and destroyed their capacity for sober judgement and eroded what basic decency and common sense they have left. In fact, the only common sense they are showing here is that they know they cannot co-opt Trump;s rhetoric because they know no one will believe them.

They consider patriots to be at best old fashioned and out of step with the times, and at worse, working class rubes. Shamefully, it appears that some here agree with them.

These people are destroying the GOP, and with it the nation.

Old Lurker

Elijah is leading the polls to take Barbara Mikulski's seat when she leaves.

Welcome to my wonderful state.

Miss Marple 2

Go Representative brooks!

Janet

There had to be priorities because of money.

A Muslim dinner party a few days after the Benghazi massacre was a priority.

James D

Exactly, TK and Janet.

Why is gun control a major issue that the Dems have made little to no gains on, compared to all the other social issues that they have had major victories with?

Because Second Amendment advocates fight. And they have an advocate in the NRA that fights. Visibly, and vigorously, and ALL THE TIME. And they are not ashamed to stand up for their issue.

Even with 100% of the dems, and 100% of the MSM, and even some of the GOPe in favor of at least some flavor of gun control, they lose. Over and over. There are even rollbacks (the Heller decision, among other things) of prior gun control policies.

Maybe there's a lesson to be learned there.

Hilligula could bite the head off a live chicken on tee vee and the MFM would gush about how brave and transgressive she is and don't we need--nay doesn't the world demand--a WOMAN like that in the WH?

Michael (fpa Patriot4Freedom)

Even the LIV's will understand the import of the two different stacks of E-mails:

2011 - It was important to topple Khadafy.

2012 - It wasn't important to respond to Amb. Stevens' request for more security.

Janet

When she talks about "we decided" or "we felt he (Stevens) needed to stay..."...

I wonder if they have correspondence of those discussions & decisions. Who is "we"?

"number of officials" - who?

Oh Brooks is asking those questions! Good for her.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

I understand what Cecil is saying about compromise and counting to 218 and it has a certain logic but the competing question is what does 218 matter if when the actual conservatives do compromise, as they have for the last five years of the Rep majority, congress can't even produce a bill that Barry has to veto?
Compromise gains much more value when you have two or more competing principles of governance. When it is one bloc of principles versus another block of appeasement, cowardice and just making sure they have a place alongside the Dems at the trough compromise loses its attraction.
It's especially galling because when they were still in the minority but had just won the election of 2010 they actually as a unified party stuck to their guns and forced a fairly useful tax compromise and extension of most of Bush's tax cuts on Barry.
Now with an actual larger voting majority and the Senate, does anyone think Barry wouldn't roll them over and make them squeal like a pig if the same issue was before them?

The problem is not the conservatives. It is an arrogant and uncompromising majority of squishes with virtually no discernible principles who repeatedly insult and ignore conservatives and thwart their issues but then expect conservatives to smile and appreciate the screwing when it's time to advance some mush from the wimps. The only way conservatives can ever be heard or their ideas considered in such circumstances is to become intransigent.

The same goes for Trump. A party that produces a frontrunner like Trump does not need to look to either the frontrunner nor to its voters and ask why. Why is obvious. The pros are corrupt, feckless, useless whores who spit in its voters faces at all times except when they want our money or our vote. Some creep who comes back to the hustings and sounds like our best friend and a heckuva neighbor and then goes back to DC and forgets who put him there and works in the interest of himself and the open maw of Washington is not our friend and not only invites but makes possible the populism of a buffoon like Trump. I can't stand the guy but I hate the creeps who betray us and our principles so much more that half of me wants him to succeed simply to smash their lovely little revolving cocktail party and whore house to bits.

If you want compromise and you don't want populism it's pretty simple; quit spitting in the faces of the people who vote for you and at least pretend like you're trying to do what you were sent there to do.
If you want conservative voters to compromise in congress and you want Rep voters to vote for people with experience not carny barkers it's even more simple; go fight with the Democrats instead of your own party.
There would be no Trump and there would be no Freedom Caucus revolt if Boehner and company had spent the last five years figuring out ways to make Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi feel powerless and ready to revolt rather than their own party.

Glad someone else is watching the old fraud. She is a disgrace to our nation.

The correspondence on security in Benghazi is well known. It was shot down time and again by the top people at State.

What should be focused on is the information from her e mails. How dare she compromise this nation's security for her personal political ass protection.

She's a vicious fraud who needs to be pilloried, tarred and feathered and run out of town on a pole.

As to pissing off Jesuits, that would give me great joy. Good on Ryan.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Here's a perfect test of who compromises and who doesn't.
Ryan puts forth a list of demands under which he will serve as Speaker. The Freedom Caucus does not get to 80% but does vote for supporting Ryan by a supermajority and puts out a statement saying;
"While no consensus [the 80%] exists among members of the House Freedom Caucus regarding Chairman Ryan’s preconditions for serving, we believe that these issues can be resolved within our Conference in due time. We all know that Washington needs to change the way it does business, and we look forward to working with Paul and all our colleagues to enact process reforms that empower individual representatives and restore respect to our institution.”

If Ryan doesn't compromise his demands and refuses to run for speaker despite this conciliatory statement, the FC will be blamed for not compromising.
If he does compromise he will receive credit for compromising in the face of FC intransigence.
That's how "compromise" works in DC; give me what I want or I'll have the press compromise your reputation.

I understand what Cecil is saying about compromise and counting to 218 and it has a certain logic but the competing question is what does 218 matter if when the actual conservatives do compromise . . .

First, they can't get to 218 on process votes. Currently, that means they can't elect a speaker. I'd submit that's a fairly significant problem.

Second, having party disunity means they can't hold together on unpopular measures. It's one reason they can't make the shutdown strategy work.

Third, if a significant number of conservatives hold out, the leadership will get votes from the opposition providing a perverse incentive to even more compromise. I think Appalled hit it fairly well above: negotiating is fine, but at some point you have to get to "yes," or your vote becomes meaningless.
