But the upshot seems to be that we've been fed a steady diet of dietary advice that should have been taken with a healthy dose of skepticism.
We'll file this long WaPo article under the heading "Big Government Fail". Which is a long-running, oft-recurring, hair-pulling, teeth-grinding JustOneMinute theme.
The article begins:
U.S. dietary guidelines have long recommended that people steer clear of whole milk, and for decades, Americans have obeyed. Whole milk sales shrunk. It was banned from school lunch programs. Purchases of low-fat dairy climbed.
“Replace whole milk and full-fat milk products with fat-free or low-fat choices,” says the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the federal government's influential advice book, citing the role of dairy fat in heart disease.
Whether this massive shift in eating habits has made anyone healthier is an open question among scientists, however. In fact, research published in recent years indicates that the opposite might be true: millions might have been better off had they stuck with whole milk.
Read Chew through the whole thing.
And if you think I'm done milking the puns for all they're worth, well, let's just say there's still meat on that bone.
Ok. I'm done.
This juvenile practice of "First"
perversely is JOM at it's worst.

Just adding a repeat from the last thread that there was a Congressional hearing on these guidelines today.
A GOP guy pointed out they completely change every 5 years, to the point that most people ignore them.
So, given that, he wanted to know why we pay for them at all.
A very good question.

Traditional Italian Meat Sauce
(Gleaned from my dear departed mother and still-with-us great-cooking aunts, each of whom had vehement oppositions to each other's crazy ideas.)
1 lb country style ribs (or other meat)
1 onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, sliced thin (like in Goodfellas)
1 carrot, chopped small
1 celery stick, sliced
2 bay leaves
1 tbsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper
1 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
1 28 oz can whole tomatoes, chopped or hand-blended not too fine
2 tbsps or so fresh basil
Parmiggiano cheese for serving
Brown meat in olive oil, then remove.
Saute carrots, then garlic, then onions and celery in olive oil.
Add bay leaves, oregano, red pepper.
When all are soft, add tomatoes.
Simmer for an hour or two.
Add meat when putting on the pasta water.
Add half the basil near the end, then add the rest on the dishes before serving.
Pasta.
Parmiggiano.

MarkO, if people attacked the shooter really bad things ensue:
a. You have individual heroes
b. You have a bad guy get beat up instead of understood
c. Nobody talks about evil guns and our need to control / confiscate them
d. First responders don't have time to get clear of the donut shop
( makes unions look bad)
e. Shemp / Brian Williams et al don't end up on TV all day
f. TOTUS collects dust
Plus a few I missed -- but this is clearly as big a disaster as locking a dude in a dress out of the girls locker room.

Canned tomatoes? Ugh. I realize that in most places it is necessary, but the secret to MrsJ's tomato-based sauces is that she uses only garden-grown tomatoes.
We always grow a huge excess for our summer needs, and the rest get put into ice cube trays after they have been made into sauce. So she can use tomato cubes all year, and we run out when the new crop is ripe.
It really does make a difference.

I even use the chopped and diced tomatores in cans or boxes instead of hand chop-chop-chop ones. No difference. How someone after the heat and mixtures with the garlic, onions and other veggies can tell the difference I have no idea.

A MATHEMATICAL discovery by Perth-based electrical engineer Dr David Evans may change everything about the climate debate, on the eve of the UN climate change conference in Paris next month.
A former climate modeller for the Government's Australian Greenhouse Office, with six degrees in applied mathematics, Dr Evans has unpacked the architecture of the basic climate model which underpins all climate science.
He has found that, while the underlying physics of the model is correct, it had been applied incorrectly.
He has fixed two errors and the new corrected model finds the climate's sensitivity to carbon dioxide (CO2) is much lower than was thought.
It turns out the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has over-estimated future global warming by as much as 10 times, he says.
"Yes, CO2 has an effect, but it's about a fifth or tenth of what the IPCC says it is. CO2 is not driving the climate; it caused less than 20 per cent of the global warming in the last few decades".

... or you could believe the 97% of scientists
Breathalysers could be used to curb alcohol abuse among scientists at US bases in Antarctica following “unpredictable behaviour” caused by excess drinking, including fights and indecent exposure.
Officials from the National Science Foundation told an audit of healthy and safety at the two US-run bases — McMurdo Station and the South Pole — that drinking has led to “unpredictable behaviour that has led to fights, indecent exposure, and employees arriving to work under the influence”, according to a report in Wired.
The agency is reportedly considering shipping several breathalysers to the isolated stations, which together house up to about 1,150 people, including scientists and support staff.
But such a move could potentially pose legal and administrative problems, as Antarctica is not US territory and it is not clear who would conduct the tests and what rights of appeal would be available.

"Who is Congressman Daniel Webster? Can anyone tell us why the house should vote for him?"
Ann,
I believe I heard it discussed on Levin's Show last week. Webster has some track record in his home state of decentralizing power which some conservatives think has to happen in order to break open the GOPe power structure in the House. His supporters believe that if that does not happen, it'll simply be what we have now with a new figurehead at the top. I believe Louis Gommert called in and threw his support behind Webster for that reason.
It's mind blowing that we don't have someone to replace Bonehead.. considering the current dire situation of our nation.
That was bumming the heck out of Levin too, but he resigned himself to having to deal with the candidates that presented themselves.

Here's a bit of the Levin/Louis Gommert bit from Levin's podcast of 10/2/15, starting at @ the 71 minute mark when Gommert calls in to the show:
Levin:
Gommert: Every time I've mentioned supporting Dan (Webster), I've made it clear I wish his voting record was more Conservative...
Levin: You're supporting Danial Webster to defeat McCarthy. Now Chaffetz comes in. 60 seconds remaining, what's your analysis?
Gommert: Danial Webster is the only one that will decentralize the power of the Speaker. If we can get a Speaker who will decentralize the power, exactly like Dan Webster did in Florida, as the 1st Republican Speaker of the House in Florida, then we can get power back to the Conservatives, but as long as we have somebody like the other 2 candidates, they're nice guys, but they're not going to decentralize the power. Dan will. That gives us the power back. Then we can fix things.
Levin: So you're saying that even though Dan has a more Moderate to Liberal voting record than you would like, when it comes to running the Speakership he's made clear that he will what? Spread the power into the Committees and so forth and so on, so Conservatives have more of a voice?
Gommert: You bet. And he's done it before, he did it in Florida...
Levin: Is Chaffetz a Conservative, yes or no?
Gommert:...I would like somebody who will give back the power.
Levin: Why won't Jim Jordan step up? Why won't these unequivocal Conservatives who have leadership qualities, why won't they step up?
Gommert: I can't speak for anybody else...
--------------------------------
It was frustrating to listen to, but Gommert closed hoping that enough votes would come to Webster, as a result of this McCarthy gaffe, that the decision would be denied outright to McCarthy and probably also to Chaffetz, and would then be fought over inside some Caucus Committee in future with hopes of getting Webster or some other Conservative into the position.

The worst offending individuals need to do serious jail time, and some institutions need to lose all federal funding for several years as punishment.
This bullshit is in my top three political issues and the culprits need to be stomped and stomped hard. The potential damage to our nation and its economy can't be overstated.

It's easy to be a good cook on the Internet, maryrose!! ;)
I was always fascinated by cooking and food and was blessed to have a Mom who is an incredible cook. I always wanted to help and she let me (sometimes!) and I learned from her, took notes, and always called when I had questions.
Cooking shows are another blessing, as are the wealth of available cookbooks and Internet sites.
