John Tierney revisits the non-utility of recycling. Read it all, but I will bait you with these two snippets. OK, three:
But how much difference does it make? Here’s some perspective: To offset the greenhouse impact of one passenger’s round-trip flight between New York and London, you’d have to recycle roughly 40,000 plastic bottles, assuming you fly coach. If you sit in business- or first-class, where each passenger takes up more space, it could be more like 100,000.
Even those statistics might be misleading. New York and other cities instruct people to rinse the bottles before putting them in the recycling bin, but the E.P.A.’s life-cycle calculation doesn’t take that water into account. That single omission can make a big difference, according to Chris Goodall, the author of “How to Live a Low-Carbon Life.” Mr. Goodall calculates that if you wash plastic in water that was heated by coal-derived electricity, then the net effect of your recycling could be more carbon in the atmosphere.
Pushing against the tide:
As a business, recycling is on the wrong side of two long-term global economic trends. For centuries, the real cost of labor has been increasing while the real cost of raw materials has been declining. That’s why we can afford to buy so much more stuff than our ancestors could. As a labor-intensive activity, recycling is an increasingly expensive way to produce materials that are less and less valuable.
Losing their religion:
Then why do so many public officials keep vowing to do more of it? Special-interest politics is one reason — pressure from green groups — but it’s also because recycling intuitively appeals to many voters: It makes people feel virtuous, especially affluent people who feel guilty about their enormous environmental footprint. It is less an ethical activity than a religious ritual, like the ones performed by Catholics to obtain indulgences for their sins.
Religious rituals don’t need any practical justification for the believers who perform them voluntarily. But many recyclers want more than just the freedom to practice their religion. They want to make these rituals mandatory for everyone else, too, with stiff fines for sinners who don’t sort properly. Seattle has become so aggressive that the city is being sued by residents who maintain that the inspectors rooting through their trash are violating their constitutional right to privacy.
I think he had fun writing that passage but he knows it is hatebait. Here is Mr. Tierney writing at InstaPundit:
RECYCLING IS STILL GARBAGE: I was curious to see the reaction to my piece in today’s New York Times on the follies of recycling. It’s a sequel to a 1996 article that set a record for hate mail at the New York Times Magazine, and I wondered if green-minded readers would be any more receptive this time...
My own little recycling story from my time in the Greatest City in the World in the late 80's is this: Our building would dutifully put out its trash on our assigned night, with most of the residents earnestly segregating the bottles into separate plastic bags. Distrustful of our diligence, the homeless would then slash open all the bags and toss the garbage around looking for additional recyclable bottles worth a $.05 deposit.
In the morning the trash trucks would come by and scoop up everything; sometimes, due to budget issues, the trucks were not equipped with a separate recycling section so all the garbage would be tossed into the same place. And as a bonus, from time to time our building would be warned that if our sorting was not even more diligent we would be fined. Some of the less motivated residents would then note that the police could probably go a mile or so north and cite the buildings up there for failing to recycle the glass containers littering over the sidewalk. For even more excitement they could then cite them for selling crack cocaine. Or why take a chance? That might get scary, whereas writing up a bunch of garbage-sorting NYC professionals is only hazardous if you ask them for tax planning advice.
Well, we have all passed a lot of water since then...
OL left out a word--"finding undisclosed new meanings for existing words".
People who hear phrases assume the Webster's dictionary meaning continues unabated. Insiders or intrepid outsiders like me know exaCTLY what is being said and promised.
I am signed up in the next 2 weeks for about 5 programs where I am there to quietly listen with my internalized Glossary of what is really being said.

I wouldn't mind seeing Biden called out, on the national stage, for his lies about the accident that killed his first wife.
That alone ought to disqualify him not only for the Presidency, but for inclusion in polite society among decent people. But the Dems have no problem with rapists, drug abusers, men who slander innocent people to further their career, or even murderers, among their party leadership.

"Oregon Shooter Was An ISIS Attack (Media Black Out)
10/05/15
Posted on Mon Oct 05 2015 02:07:53 GMT-0700 (PDT) by Enlightened1
Here are the facts that the media refuses to report because they are too busy ranting about gun control:
1) Shooter name WAS Chris Harper-Mercer
2) ISIS claimed responsibility that it was a terror attack from one of their own
3) Chris Harper-Mercer was a Muslim convert and changed his name to Saiv Sharma
4) He targeted Christians
5) Russia's Security Service, FSB, had this guy on their Terror Watch List. The same list they offered to the USA about one month ago, to which they refused. The list has 87,000 names."

When it occurred tot hem that maybe he could win and that the other candidates were starting to use some of his ideas, they suddenly went all quiet.
Also, he has been a bit less bombastic, instead giving interviews and releasing policy papers.

Some OR Christians Killer news, at least to me:
Laurel Harper, the killer's murder-enabling black mom, was 38 when he was born and 64 yo now. No mention of any other children. Neighbors in Torrance, CA, say the two lived in the same 1 bedroom apartment from the time he was a toddler until the last several years.
An interview with the mother of the 18 yo male, who the killer selected to live and give LE a packet containing the thumb-drive w/info, said the boy was ordered to sit in the back of the room and remain immobile and was forced to watch as the killings occurred before him. Video from what looked like a memorial service focused on what appeared to be the chosen survivor - overweight, bespeckled, leaning forward w/head down, looking devastated. Like all the other victims seen, this surviving young man is white too.

Yes that's the big question. We moved end of July and we have boxes to the ceiling. Of course our problem was we moved into a home that was already full of furniture. Lots in storage. Every time we need something it comes down to --- yes we have that but it's in a box somewhere.
I have found in past moves that sometimes those last few boxes never get unpacked.

We probably have that here in Arlington already, JamesD. I wouldn't be surprised at all.

"BikeArlington is a program of Arlington County Commuter Services (ACCS), a bureau of the Arlington, Virginia Department of Environmental Services."
"Arlington County Commuter Services (ACCS) is funded in part by grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT)."
http://www.bikearlington.com/
the car-free diet propaganda campaign is part of this too.
Think of all the people we pay for this stuff. Is that why citizens formed governments?? For this nonsense???
It is almost impossible to find a list of all employees & all departments for Arlington.

Thanks Boehner Lite:
"But House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California), the front-runner to become the next House speaker, last week handed Clinton and her campaign a new tool with which to go on the offensive.
During a Fox News interview, McCarthy seemed to tout the House Benghazi committee's role in instigating email-related revelations that tore down Clinton's poll numbers — instead of the committee's role in investigating the 2012 attack on the diplomatic compound in Libya. Democrats pounced and said the comment exposed the committee as a partisan sham.
Clinton agreed with the criticism during her Monday "Today" interview and suggested that the committee should be shut down.
"This committee was set up, as they have admitted, for the purpose of making a partisan, political issue out of the deaths of four Americans," she said. "I would have never done that! And if I were president — and there were Republicans or Democrats who were thinking about that — I would have done everything to shut it down."

The Chicago Lurking Unit has a thought or two:
DrJ's question has more to it than one might think. Currently, banks hold untradable shares in the Fed as part of their Tier 1 capital structure. These shares are part of what is considered the stable part of bank solvency. Lawmakers are looking to grab part of that solvency for their own "infrastructure" funds, a k a the notoriously crony-focused Highway Fund.
IMO, This is an election funding cash grab and signals that the re-election cash demands remain as high as ever, but the donor pool is getting squeezed in other ways, say like higher mandatory health care costs. "DC Uniparty Seeks New Cash For Old Business" should be the appropriate headline for the unwritten article.
Posted by: henry | October 05, 2015 at 12:49 PM
Beasts:
If the House GOP cannot discipline its members so that they just ask questions, rather than pontificate, then, yes, they should cancel the hearings. But if the members can ask a question then shut up and coordinate their questions with each other (so that interesting lines of inquiry are followed up), then maybe there is a chance this is worth while.
Plus -- even if the media ignores the hearings -- the folks making campaign ads, you tube guerrillas, and Fox will not. That media does get out there, though it sometimes takes time.

You might have to sit down, the red queen sketch wasn't spontaneous.

I agree with Beasts re: the Hillary/Benghazi hearings.
The problem is that the R's don't appear to have any strategy as far as how they're conducted or what they hope to accomplish.

For all the car nuts and race fans out there:
A "priceless" Aston Martin once driven by Sir Stirling Moss was involved in a bizarre racing crash - thought to be one of the most expensive smashes ever.
The Aston Martin DBR1 - worth at least £20million - a classic Jaguar XK 120 and an Austin Healey 100 piled into each other during supercars of 1950s race.

From MM's playground link;
The benefits to a principle might not be the benefits to a kid.
All that tells me is they aren't letting kids be kids which involves getting hurt and getting in trouble because they're deciding for themselves how to have fun.
One of the truly bizarre aspects of the world is those who claim they value individual expression and diversity the most are the least tolerant clowns on the planet who try to enforce the most rigid, incorrigible conformity and group think on everyone.
They believe in diversity as long as everyone is diverse just like them; you can have a Model T in any color you want so long as it's a rainbow.

--Anyways I didn't know in bullitt, how the main plot point centers on a macguffin.--
The car chase has so obscured the rest of the movie that a lot of people don't realize what a superb, stand alone story it is.
And while the car chase is supremely exciting and involves a black 68 Charger, pretty much my favorite American car ever, it is possibly the worst part of the movie technically.
If you look closely you'll notice they pass the same green VW bug about half a dozen times just using different angles and takes.

That's a bad day at the track, JiB. I'd be surprised if it were the first wreck for any of those vehicles, though.

Reportedly, OR Christians Killer was a Satanist, and his murder-enabling mother is Laurel Harper, a name which should live in infamy imo.

--Shillary has two plays on offense now: gun control and Benghazi. One handed to her by a nut of unknown persuasion and one by the GOPe. Now she gets to play the victim (her favorite role) and demonize the NRA and gun owners.--
Good luck with that. Hillarycare gets the credit but the assault weapon ban was an even larger reason for the 94 GOP takeover and massacre of the Dems.
If she wants to slam her leaky campaign pirogue onto the Scylla and Charybdis of gun owners as so many others have, full steam ahead, seahag.

I think you are wrong about that. I would be shocked if Gowdy didn't have a strategy and more shocked if he leaked it.

Rush is talking about the DoJ's new alignment with the UN for a 'safe cities' initiative to save us from "extremists". They're zeroing in to the local level for even more control...
I wonder who the "extremists" represent to Loretta Lynch, Obama, et al. Hmmmm.

Not necessarily saying that she can ride the issue to the WH, Ig, just dating that she can use it to energetically connect with her base one use it to deflect from other short-term campaign weaknesses.
And congrats on working pirogue, Scylla and Charybdis into the same sentence! :)
I hope you're right, Jane. It just chaps my ass that he has to head into the hearings after the McCarthy own goal.
