Joel Pollak of Breitbart has the details of the evolving story [Which may have evolved past me as I typed... See Just In]. The crux is this: Trump was asked about registering all Muslims in the US but seemed to be responding with ideas about registering immigrants.
Step 3: Distort. NBC News’ Vaughn Hillyard confronts Trump: “Should there be a database system that tracks the Muslims here in this country?” Trump replies: “There should be a lot of systems, beyond databases. We should have a lot of systems. And today you can do it. But right now, we have to have a border, we have to have strength, we have to have a wall, and we cannot let what’s happening to this country happen any longer.” Hillyard asks: “But that’s something your White House would like to implement?” Trump: “Oh I would certainly implement that. Absolutely.” Hillyard follows up: What do you think the effect of that would be? How would that work? It would stop people from coming in illegally. We have to stop people from coming into our country illegally.” Hillyard asks if Trump would go to mosques to register people. “Different places,” Trump says.
It is clear from the exchange that Trump thinks Hillyard is talking about new entrants to the United States, presumably Syrian refugees. But Hillyard reports Trump’s answer as if he is talking unambiguously about Muslims already in the United States.
The Times assures us that the various Democratic candidates managed to respond as they fell to their fainting couches. Republican candidates (i.e., Nazi sympathizers, in TimesSpeak) are less fierce in their criticism, although the Times musters some. Democratic preening is inevitable but Republican forebearance is shrewd, since Republicans can't win with their supporters by siding with the media in what seems to be a media created non-story.
But is it a non-story? We think so, but Trump has let the morning pass into the afternoon without denouncing NBC News or clarifying his views.
For the record, we won't be registering US citizens by their religion. I would be stunned if it were Constitutional and surprised (not to say disappointed) if pollsters found strong support for the idea.
As to tracking immigrants by religious affiliation, I am not a lawyer and can't opine on the US Constitutional rights of a foreign citizen applying from a foreign country. My guess is those rights are limited, but having said that, the DS-260 visa application for immigrants does not have (as best I can tell) any questions about religious affiliation. A word search comes back empty for "religion" and only gets hits on "religious" in the context of religious names or vocations.
The same is true for the DS-160 tourist visa application.
So even if Trump means to track Muslims by religious status we would need retrospective data collection on the immigrants already legally here.
As to whether that could be done Constitutionally, I don't know. I would guess we could simply ask all immigrants to declare their religion. That would answer 'equal treatment' questions and leave us in position for the day when militant Buddhists rise up in protest of the Chinese activities in Nepal. Or whatever.
What we do with the devout observers who answer "None" to the religious question is just one of the legal puzzles such a law might create. Frankly, given our history as a country founded by people fleeing religious persecution, I would be stunned if even the registration of immigrants (not citizens!) by religion was implemented.
JUST IN: This Trump Tweet timestamp is 10:51 Am but all the reaction in my Twitter feed is in the last half-hour, so I infer it was tweeted at 1:51 Eastern time. Not only does Twitter never sleep, it doesn't even walk out to get the mail. (You remember, stamps, envelopes...)
I didn't suggest a database-a reporter did. We must defeat Islamic terrorism & have surveillance, including a watch list, to protect America.
Well. He didn't suggest a database but he didn't reject it either. Normally Trump does not lack for energy is denouncing his foes.
I'll go get the others...

Yet Obama prefers to let the UN sift the Christian refugees out of the stream so only Muslims get here.

Aren't we all registered in any event? Hell, even if I turn the GPS on my cell phone off, something is tracking me when I go to the casino or the strip club!

I could soften on my anti-Trumpsterism if he acknowledged that the initial center of gravity of illegal alien policies must be rooting out the terrorists and securing our borders. We can deal with other illegals later. And if we concentrated first on the terrorists and on border security, I suspect there would be a lot less angst about providing illegals Hector from Mexico and Haig from Armenia and Lee from Taiwan a path to legality.
The thing that really frosts me about Trump's illegals policy is his apparent obliviousness to the reality that deporting all illegals and then having them processed by bureaucrats a'int gonna happen.

This thread generation is scary.
U.S. pilots have been bitching about WH micromanagement of air strikes for a long time now. Obama outdoes LBJ in that regard, but I think it is a 20 something knucklehead in charge.
Pilots have had armed terrs in their sight and it took 30 minutes to get approval to release weapons. That's crazy. You strafe 'em when you are lined up.
Basically Obama doesn't listen to the military, despises them, and has the whole world now criticizing him for his incompetence.
Posted by: matt | November 20, 2015 at 03:45 PM
This new poll and this one both show Trump holding steady, Carson fading and Ted Cruz surging.
Trump v Cruz would be interesting;
The know nothing v the know it all.
The birther v the guy born in Canuckistan.
The guy who thinks he's the smartest in every room because he had yuge grades, just fantastic grades at Wharton v the guy who really is the smartest guy in the room.
The guy who shows far too much of his fairly obnoxious personality v the guy who might or might not benefit from showing more of his.
The Yank v the Texan.
The newly minted conservative except when he's talking about government doing everything and when Aunt Martha's house is in the way of his proposed 18th fairway v a guy with the most conservative bona fides since Reagan.

Other than Osama, which he apparently had to get talked into approving, he doesn't care that much about actually killing the terrorists, just about the appearance of doing so.

Yikes, did Carson really say this?
@daveweigel
Carson on Trump: "Hopefully we already have a database on everybody in this country," but shouldn't treat races/religions differently.
I'm going to guess he either meant "data" like the census collects, or he meant on people who enter the country. But one shouldn't have to guess quite so desperately.

A lot of the media is going to be surprised when this latest kerfuffle doesn't damage Trump.
1. There are a lot of people who are sick of the carp from terrorists and whining groups like CAIR and would go for mass deportation. (Please remember I am simply stating my observations, although if there is another attack here I will be "this close" to joining that opinion.)
2. Someone needsto figure out exactly what Islam represents. If it is mostly political (which a case can be made for), then they could be monitored like the communists were.
I find it interesting that the democrats, who have shown NO respect for the 1st Amendment with regards to religion (Little Sister of the Poor, gay marriage, etc.) suddenly are concerned about not stigmatizing a religious group which happens to be Muslim.

As I understand the situation for Trump's remarks was a rope line he was walking shaking hands, signing autographs, talking to supporters and this little jerk reporter thought he could but in with questions, most of which you cannot make out in any of the audios. They were leading questions as if the kid had watched too many court room dramas and Trump's answers have been taking completely out of context.
As far as databases go, with all the information the federal, state and local government has from census, income tax filings, SS, tax rolls, driver's licenses, voter registration, etc. Carson is more correct than wrong.

Sure, but in context it came off wrong. Re terrorism/security, I think it's mostly the absence of data (meaning a criminal record, etc) that is the indicator. And U.S. Citizens don't have to have a passport unless they want to travel outside the U.S.

Lets keep in mind those having the vapors over a database on muslim immigrants want, at the very least, a vast and detailed database on every gun owner in America, want the Federal government to have in its paws every single detail of your medical history, are perfectly fine with an IRS that can give you an anal probe and delve into every facet of your life at the drop of a hat and considers you guilty til proven innocent and wants to know every single organization you donate to and how much.
I'm sure others can come up with an endless list of tabs the lefties don't mind being kept on people.
What we can't do is keep an eye on people who might be terrorists or enter the country illegally and half the guys convicted of crimes should be let out and dispersed among the people who really need watching...you.

Of course the IRS now demands SSN's of all contributors to charity. (Latest gambit).

What should candidates be expected to know about refugee databases? Should they expected to be able to differentiate between that HHS database and the State Department WRAPS data?
Should they be expected to have the mental faculties required to observe refugees receive benefits and have case workers? Should they know that 19,651 Iraqis were admitted as refugees in 2014?
I'd like to know what the 8,300 refugees from Bhutan are running from but I wouldn't expect a candidate to have the answer..

The things people do.
My technician is heavily into endurance events, and Tough Mudder in particular. It is a spin-off of the British Secret Service; last week she competed in the Nationals.
In 24 hours she ran 45 miles according to the book, 57 miles including the penalties, while traversing all sorts of odd obstacles. On many, if you don't succeed, you get an electric shock, or fall into water, and have to do penalty laps.
This year the event was held in Las Vegas, and it was really cold at night and the wind howled. Many of the top people did not complete the event because of hypothermia or injuries.
She came in fifth in her age class, and her training partner was fifth overall for women. Very impressive!

I am serious, no sports teams. No soccer leagues, no girls softball, nothing. We had a pool at my high school but no girls swim team.
Consequently, I never learned to enjoy exercise or sports. I get exercise from housework, gardening, and walking the dog. The idea of "working out" is an alien concept to me.
So I am amazed at people who do stuff like your co-worker.

Yes, I know Scott Walker is honorable. I wanted him to be president. I sent him money. I just didn't expect to help him pay off his debts. :)

Joan, his debts are his campaigns debts. He isn't in dire straits, he just has debts that he is morally responsible for.
Thank you for being a help to Mr Walker's campaign. You're one of the good guys/gals.

Deb and Captain
In the old days as Catholics we were not permitted to attend other Protestant or Christian services
Now we can
Some Catholics believe in blessed holy water or nearness to the Pope gives them grace
We are not forced in civil matters to follow the lead of the Pope but many will justify their behavior by citing his beliefs
You should not fear that SC judges or congressional leaders will answer to the Pope they won't
Look at Pelosi and Kerry
Only in faith and morals does his guidance apply

The greatest strength of Catholicism is the celebration of the Eucharist and faith in the Holy Trinity
We are marked at Baptism and confirm our faith in the Sacrament of Confirmation
Faith Hope and Charity are our guiding principles

in the 80s, the American Catholic hierarchy were as left on some issues like the nuclear freeze and death penalty, but Pope John Paul kept things in check,

The great John Glenn, standup donk that he was, stiffed a lot of vendors who provided goods and services for his quixotic presidential runs which only a mentally ill egomaniac would have undertaken. He was a partisan hack of a Senator and a complete deadbeat at paying his debts which is an excellent litmus test of the quality of a person.

maryrose, I haven't made any comments about Catholic office holders and their loyalty. The only thing even partially related to that which miffs me is how Catholics overwhelmingly voted for the Kennedy whelps, but that's just commiecrat identity politics.

KT McFarland on Hannity a few minutes ago with guest host David Webb. Sobering thoughts on this as a generation battle, especially as Obama mocks the idea that young kids are anything to be worried about.
KT: I go all around the world and even our enemies are saying "Hey America, where are you? We need you to step up to lead." Who thought we would have to be looking to Putin to take care of the Middle East, or that it would be the French stepping up? We need American Leadership. The world wants us to do it, and here's the risk if we don't. If Global Jihad succeeds in the Islamic State, if it succeeds in other places, then we are going to spend a generation of playing catch-up. The people who who are fighting, the people in Paris, they were pre-teens when September 11th happened. We're now in the second generation of this fight, and it is by no means contained, it is now growing, it is in more places in greater strength than ever before. And if this Global Jihad gets it's hands on Weapons of Mass destruction; Chemical Weapons, Dirty Bombs, then we're in a world that we can not even begin to imagine.

Captain Hate,
I bet those campaign consultants got paid, though. They seem to get all their money up front and get out of Dodge when the campaigns collapse.
Meanwhile, rents, printers fees, catering and the like can wait for years to get paid.

Damn straight, Miss Marple.
Welp Blue Bloods just took a shot at the Huntress. Very disappointing how they do that crap by rote.

Maryrose. I love you. I really do. I've had a week from HELL, and a extremely wonderful loved one, Mother of 6, who left us. I am a faithful Catholic, and Maryrose, YOU HAVE MADE MY WEEK.
