Brace yourself, and shades of Rocky IV - Russia cheats at sports:
Russian Athletes Part of State-Sponsored Doping Program, Report Finds
By REBECCA R. RUIZ NOV. 9, 2015
GENEVA — Top Russian athletes, including Olympians and winners of prestigious events like the Chicago marathon, have for years participated in a systematic doping program that involved some of Russia’s sports officials, the World Anti-Doping Agency said on Monday.
...
The report implicated athletes, coaches, trainers, doctors and various Russian institutions, including the country’s anti-doping agency and an accredited laboratory in Moscow that handled testing for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. It detailed payments to conceal doping tests and arrangements by which athletes were made aware of when they would be tested, in violation of code which dictates they be spontaneous, and also the destruction of samples.
But this really caught my eye:
It recommended WADA impose lifetime bans for five coaches and five athletes, including the gold and bronze medalists from the women’s 800 meters at the 2012 London Olympics.
Ah, well. it does not hold the same position in the national psyche as the question of what to do with Barry Bonds' arguably tainted season and career home run marks, but... women's track and field has long puzzled over what to do with some of their world records, which have gone unchallenged for decades and almost surely were the result of undetected doping back in the day. Among such records are the women's 800 meter, so it is intriguing that a contemporary Russian doper is in that event. How, one might wonder, does she compare with the likely dopers of the past?
In 2012, the Russian winner of the 800 was Mariya Savinova with a time of 1:56.19. She also appears in this list of the fastest women's 800 m times in the history of the sport, with a 2011 race time of 1:55.87.
But the world record remains at 1:53.28, set in 1983. And a quick glance at the fastest historic times shows the women have 12 entries from the 80's and 4 from the 70's; by way of comparison the (also suspect) men's side shows 4 entries from the 80's and none from the 70's.
So the good news is that although the Russians are cheating today, they aren't cheating as hard as people once did. Progress!
First?

Not to name drop, but we happened to meet Yale Prez Salovey when we were vacationing in Arizona last spring. I had a pleasant 10-minute or so chat with him and he struck me as a decent, sensible guy. So much for first impressions. Disappointing to seem him cave and suck up like this. Maybe the Board of Trustees is forcing his hand.
Alan Bloom wrote in "Closing of the American Mind," about the terrible surrender of the Cornell administration to activists in '69, and similar cowardice was on display all over the Ivies. I think Chicago may have been an example of a school where the president stood up to the gangsters.

It's partly funny and partly tragic that the result of the effort to unify Europe through the EU may be the refragmentation and retribalization of Europe.
Euroweenies are not a new creation from scratch.
Just under that hide of soft, pasty, non-GMO, organic chicken sausage I'll wager still lies the soul of the Berserker and the Hun.
To think otherwise is to buy into the silly Marxist/leftist notion of the moldable man. It also implicitly assumes Europe has seen its last blood soaked battlefields.
Both of those ideas, viewed through the lens of history that reveals the immutable, nasty nature of humanity and that Europe has almost from the beginning been the scene of man's most titanic efforts to wipe out man, seem almost childlike in their naivete.

Iggy,
A lib I work with begged me to read WaPo writer T R Reid's "The United States of Europe" when it came out back in 2005. My co-worker thought the book was brilliant and that Europe was going to transform itself into some amazing, tolerant, unified world leader and leave all the rest of us in the dust. I thought it was complete rubbish. One of us is correct.

Shocking that some dreamers' notion of unifying, by the stroke of a pen, disparate peoples and cultures that have regularly tried to murder each other for 2000 years or more might have the opposite effect. We get to see a bit of that on the home front with the Federal government pushing its one-size-fits-all agenda on states and local governments.

I guess all my high school friends, whether or not we ended up going to a service academy, are liars. When we were talking about the pros and cons of various schools, the scholarships to the service academies always came up. We would never think to distinguish between a scholarship and lack of tuition.
In any event, I believe scholarship is the more apt term. A school that doesn't charge tuition, or room and board, or whatever, has some funding source, whether a federal, state or local governmental source, or a private philanthropic source. "Free" tuition or room and board or whatever is really a scholarship.

daddy,
Even Rush is behind on the non-story. When I read that in the book, I was non-plussed and understood exactly what he mean't. Back in my day (graduated from HS in 1961) everyone referred to going to an academy as a "free ride" and "government scholarship".
In fact, if the word is problematic then why did over 15K high school senior "apply" for those scholarships last year. Appointment and/or selection (legacy and current military) are later. Ask a kid in 12th grade if he is applying for an appointment or scholarship. I will wager a lot of them will say scholarship. Not the majority but a lot.

JiB,
Momma came home last night just after midnight from her 3 day trip down there. It was some sort of affair organized for the parents to hear some lectures and see the campus. Momma said the amazing thing to her (Ohio State grad) was that she walked into Z's Dorm house about 11 AM on Saturday and everyone was asleep. She says that it appears they all study until 2 or 3 AM and then crash hard to afternoon hours when able.
Momma enjoyed it and said Z's having a good time but is exhausted from studying. Took her out to a Thai place near campus and Zobob went nuts chowing down on good food:)
I'm looking forward to picking her brain, but she always enjoyed that show, and I imagine she'll enjoy it even more when she's home for Christmas Break.

Timing belts are a rubber composition with internal banding similar to a tire. The belt has cogs on it that ride in mirror image grooves on the small gear on a crankshaft and the large gear on the camshaft.
A timing chain is an industrial version of a bicycle chain. It goes between sprockets on the crank and cam.
The metal to metal contact of a chain on sprockets creates a substantial amount of noise in comparison to rubber teeth riding in metal groves.

Chains allow the cam to be placed in the most convenient and practical location in an engine, JIB.
The cam gear has to rotate once per the crank gear's two revolutions.
That could make for a yuge set of gears if they were in direct contact and the cams were on the top of the engine.

You can use idler gears to connect the crank and the cam. That becomes very noisy.

Don't want a timing chain or belt?
Get a '54 Rolls:
Wiki " For this reason, the camshaft is connected to the crankshaft either directly, via a gear mechanism, or indirectly via a belt or chain called a timing belt or timing chain. Direct drive using gears is unusual because of the cost. The frequently reversing torque caused by the slope of the cams tends to cause gear rattle which for an all metal gear train requires further expense of a cam damper. Rolls-Royce V8 (1954) used gear drive as unlike chain it could be made silent and to last the life of the engine.[6] Where gears are used in cheaper cars, they tend to be made from resilient fibre rather than metal, except in racing engines that have a high maintenance routine. Fibre gears have a short life span and must be replaced regularly, much like a timing belt."

rse-The Lutheran school my boys attended had a classical education curriculum. I don't think you can go wrong with that.

As a yoot, I cut my teeth setting up timing gears on Detroit Diesels.
After alignment the crankshaft had to be turned some ridiculous amount of revolutions until all the index marks lined up again.

TK,
My answer was one word Wankel. Of course, my first answer was 4 stroke requires it. My professor was a German guy who was sort of amazed that in 1963 a kid knew about Dr. Felix Wankel. Pure luck on my part since I ran across a press article in German at the college library. Thank you, dad for those two years in Weisbaden:)

A lot of racing engines used gear drives on the cams.
Renault has experimented with electro-hydraulic actuated valves that would eliminate the cams and cam drives altogether.

You got me, JiB. :-)
I remember hearing that if the metallurgy was possible, the Wankel engine would have no upper rpm limit.
