There's that, plus online buying is so much easier and more reliable. I rarely go into stores any more. Regular retailers are having a hell of a time.

So did those accented men pay cash for the burner phones and propane tanks?

The headline made it look like they were connected, but by my reading they're not. The phones were purchased, but a bunch of propane tanks (from various locations) are apparently being stolen.

I looked around casually to see if there is a market for stolen LP tanks, and AFAICT, they don't sell at all. Dunno how suspicious all this is (or if it's just a result of folks looking for dots to connect after SB).

daddy

Here is the part from JMH's 12:29 link to the Cruz Climate Hearings that really got to me:

all the Democratic subcommittee members were present and accounted for...

Only one other Republican was present on the dais, Senators Steve Daines (R-MT). All the other G.O.P. members, including Marco Rubio (R-FL), Jerry Moran (R-KS), and Dan Sullivan (R-AK) were absent. Message: I don't care.

So the signal from the G.O.P. was clear: Chairman Cruz was almost home alone, while the Democrats were united.

And the consequences of this "I don't care?"

Given the rules of the Senate, where question-and-answer time at a hearing is allocated among Senators, as opposed to witnesses, it meant that the Democrats would enjoy a 6-2 advantage during the proceedings. Cruz had obviously failed to garner the support of his subcommittee. While he could chair the hearing as a personal prerogative, he would not be able to control the questioning, nor would he be able to count on the intercession of Republican Senators to back up witnesses, should they be browbeaten or ignored...

that meant for every two questions asked by two Republicans of four witnesses, six could be asked by Democrats of one witness.

(6 Democratic Senators x 5 minutes) = 30 minutes of questions.

(2 G.O.P. Senators x 5 minutes) = 10 minutes of questions.

Thanks GOP.

Stephanie

"Dopey Prince @Alwaleed_Talal wants to control our U.S. politicians with daddy’s money. Can’t do it when I get elected," Republican presidential front-runner Donald J. Trump tweeted after the prince told him to end his White House bid.

I read somewhere (on the net so it MUST be true) that had one followed the buffoon Cramer's stock picks one's ROR would have been negative since '00. My mil likes him for some reason.

Clarice, I think your next "Pieces" should limn how Zero has this uncanny ability to discern who and what everyone on earth...isn't. Y'know, ISIS isn't Islamic, this country's sensible aversion to Muslim immigrants isn't "who we are," terrorism isn't a big deal, climate change isn't natural and variable, deficit spending isn't a problem...

Probably not enough grist for a full column.

daddy

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest (hypothetically of course) that if something big was to go "boom" under the Senate rotunda during the next "State Of The Union" speech, there'd be a whole lot more folks cheering in this country than just a couple guys on the rooftops of Patterson New Jersey.

I'd like to read Dewhurst's response to the Crease assertion regarding Cruz and the establishment. I'm sure Crease is incapable of solving a rate of change equation but he also appears to have lost the ability to determine general location.

Probably no more so than would be a bunch of MEers going to flight school.

Cecil Turner

Brooks's article reminds me of Josh Earnest whining that Trump's muslim immigration proposal was disqualifying. Dude, provide some support for your assertion because nobody gives a flying f___ what you think.

And the consequences of this "I don't care?"

It's a well-written article, and fairly compelling but . . . (you knew there was going to be a but, right?) . . . it seems to me the only thing that really matters on this sort of thing is politically significant soundbytes. Like who is going to watch the whole thing (not me!) . . . and on that note, the video of Marky Mark self-immolating is pretty darn good.

Miss Marple 2

Speaking of Brooks, early this morning on the NPR station he was on speaking to the Indiana Economists Club. (I didn't know he was even in town.)

OMG! He's written some book about character and it's all broken down into stages and things that you do to acquire character and it was SO BORING and he is a pompous person, truly.

If I found that on line somewhere I would post it for sleep-induction purposes, because I couldn't believe I was listening to such a boring speech. And he kept making little "inside" jokes which only made sense if you knew him, the New York Times, and various people in the New York scene. I knew enough to know he was joking but not enough to get the point, as was true of the audience, who sat in silence after the joke. Very embarrassing.

Trevor Loudon has a link to the Madison DSA's Fall Newsletter which claims Sanders is a DSA member. I'm appalled by the amount of people I know that support him and when I call him a Socialist, they all argue he's a social democrat not a socialist. I'm not sure what people think about Trevor Loudon but IMO, he's exposed and documented many of the left's ties to Marx.

Probably no more so than would be a bunch of MEers going to flight school.

The smart phone black market is a well-known phenomenon. If they tied the LP canister disappearances to ME men, it'd be a lot more concerning, but so far (AFAICT) they haven't. If you've got more, by all means, trot it out, but what I've seen so far looks more like expectation bias than anything else.

Re Stephanie's link at 2:20 PM: Brooksie the NY Times op ed writer classifies Cruz as selfish for wanting to go to Harvard Law and for asking about someone's IQ and SAT scores:

Historian Michael Beschloss: Yeah. Even aside from the fact of electing the first African American President and whatever one’s partisan views this is a guy whose IQ is off the charts — I mean you cannot say that he is anything but a very serious and capable leader and — you know — You and I have talked about this for years …

Imus: Well. What is his IQ?

Beschloss: … our system doesn’t allow those people to become President, those people meaning people THAT smart and THAT capable

Imus: What is his IQ?

Beschloss: Pardon?

Imus: What is his IQ?

Beschloss: Uh. I would say it’s probably - he’s probably the smartest guy ever to become President.

Imus: That’s not what I asked you. I asked you what his IQ was.

Beschloss: You know that I don’t know and I’d have to find someone with more expertise …

Imus: You don’t know.

Beschloss: What do YOU think it is?

Imus: I don’t know. Well mine is 164. I don’t know what that means but it’s a little higher than normal I guess.

Beschloss: Well it’s way beyond genius which does not surprise me.

Imus: It surprised a lot of people when we took it.

Beschloss: Well it doesn’t surprise me.

Cecil Turner

BTW, Snopes is in the process of checking the LP tanks/cell phone stuff.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--they all argue he's a social democrat not a socialist--

What the hell does that mean?

Miss Marple 2

Cacil,

The problem is that the smartphone black market includes a lot of people who want the use of a smartphone without it being tied to them.

Now it could be for reasons other than terrorism, certainly. Drug dealing comes to mind, as well as other unsavory criminal activity.

The thing about this is it is like a bunch of the other stuff Middle Eastern petty thieves and shoplifters do, they sell black market or whatever, and they make a profit due to the smartphone not being registered, in the process facilitating a lot of things which aren't helpful to our country.

They also are heavily involved in medicaid fraud, cigarette smuggling, and fake Social Security identities.

So while I wouldn't panic until I know more, a good question is WHO they were going to re-sell those phones to, and why they bought them at an odd hour.

Jim Miller

Rocco - Thanks for the link. I'll take a look at it.

It's unfortunate that our "mainstream" journalists haven't asked Sanders some of the obvious questions.

For instance: "Did you have a chance to talk to Solzhenitsyn, while he was living in Vermont?"

CT, wasn't trying to be a smartass, just making the point that if the Feds are doing their jobs right, most of the stuff they investigate will be dead ends, but it still should be investigated. And if they aren't for fear of "profiling" or something, then we're in big trouble.

If you read "The Looming Tower" you'd see how close they were to preventing 9/11 but for bureaucratic crap like what Jaimie Gorelick inflicted on the FBI and CIA.

Cecil Turner

Fox WSJ editorial report was worth watching today. Actual differences between Cruz and Rubio on surveillance and Iraq. I agree with Rubio on both points (though many here will disagree, especially on surveillance) . . . and I suspect Cruz is pandering a bit to triangulate a few voting segments; though he may be a true believer.

First time I've had significant disagreement with him on policy issues.

Cecil Turner

The problem is that the smartphone black market includes a lot of people who want the use of a smartphone without it being tied to them.

No argument. It's worth looking into.

CT, wasn't trying to be a smartass, just making the point that if the Feds are doing their jobs right, most of the stuff they investigate will be dead ends, but it still should be investigated. And if they aren't for fear of "profiling" or something, then we're in big trouble.

No argument here, either. It's just that this, like other recent reports, appear to suggest either there's an imminent plot (that connects to the subject matter) or that there's a way to foil an imminent plot (with a particular government program), and I'd suggest they're likely wrong.

Doesn't mean we shouldn't track them down, I heartily agree we should.

Cecil Turner

Now to get some work dome.

I'm for church and then dinner, but the effect's the same. Cheers!

Especially this parody of gun control advocates:

If you think precision doesn't matter, forget about guns for a second. Imagine I'm concerned about dangerous pit bulls, and I'm explaining my views to you, a dog trainer — but I have no grasp of dog terminology.

Me: I don't want to take away dog owners' rights, but we need to do something about pit bulls. We need restrictions on owning an attack dog.

You: Wait. What's an “attack dog”?

Me: You know what I mean. Like military dogs.

You: Huh? Pit bulls aren't military dogs. In fact “military dogs” isn't a thing. You mean like German Shepherds?

Me: Don't be ridiculous. Nobody's trying to take away your German Shepherds. But civilians shouldn't own fighting dogs.

You: I have no idea what dogs you're talking about now.

Me: You're being both picky and obtuse. You know I mean hounds.

You: Hounds? Seriously?

Me: OK, maybe not actually “hounds.” Maybe I have the terminology wrong. I'm not obsessed with violent dogs the way you are. But we can identify breeds that civilians just don't need to own.

You: Apparently not.

Driving back from picking up holiday guests at LAX yesterday, I passed a working guy's pickup truck on the 105 freeway in South Los Angeles. The truck was nondescript, maybe 5 or 6 years old. The driver was an adult white or Latino male dressed in outdoor working man's garb for what passes for cold weather in Southern California. He had a lightweight hoody of fleece pulled up around his head and ears, with a baseball cap topping it off.

I was interested in the collection of stickers and logos on the guy's truck. He had a "swim club Dad" sticker; there was an Indian head team logo centered on the rear window of the pickup cab. Oh dear, his children swim for a team or at a school with a politically incorrect team name! The social justice warriors will be on him like a dirty shirt!

Somehow I don't think he would care, because the newest logo on his truck was a bumper sticker with head pictures of the Donald and of Hillary, and the phrase "Trump That Bitch".

Carson has really cratered. He was at 28% in the Oct. 23rd, Cruz was at 10% and Trump was at 19%. Cruz is expected to pick up most of Carson's support but he picked up even more than what Carson lost.

It's a very good trajectory for Iowa.

BTW - the poll isn't particularly predictive, even though it's the best Iowa pollster by a huge margin. It's still too far out to be predictive.

Jack is Back! (On Alert!)

We are back from the game with exhyausted iPhone batteries. In this day and age that is what is important to a 12 year old. Well that and the fact that Navy won.

Great game. Terrific atmosphere for everyone whether Army or Navy. We were on the Navy side (Home team or Eagles). A few Army stragglers. No insults, only smiles, hand shakes, good luck etc. Can you imagine that at an Eagles - Cowboys or Redskins game:)

Army could have put this thing away 3 times. It was like watching Chalie Brown kicking field goals.

For Frederick, it was the Walk On's, the Leap Frogs and Golden Knights, the F/A18 and Apache Flyovers. That's what he (and many kids) want to do. Football? Okay but that is only a game.

Beasts of England

Heck of an Army-Navy game. I hate that it's been 14 years for the Middies, but the Black Knights fought the good fight.

Danielson and Lundquist did good work in the booth, and I have no doubt that each of them fully appreciate those young men and women who have chosen a harder path than their contemporaries and could soon be in harm's way.

Jack is Back! (On Alert!)

A few observations:

I was the fist football player to ever sack Roger Staubauch. Put that in your Funk and Wagnalls and smoke it. All your JOM comment buffs can figure it out.

There are a lot of Families who come to the games and their kids who are cadets or middies come into the seating areas to sit with them. Then you get what we saw, a young lady middie meets here parents in front of us and her classmate from HS who is a cadet then joins them!

It is a special game and experience and yes, America, there are your future. Not your future leaders but your future. Will they defend you or will they just roll over on PC bullshit and Obama nationalism? Hard to decide the way things are going.

One last thing. Lots of female cadest and middies. One leads the Middies and one is second in command of the cadets. Just and observation.
