Peter Baker of the Times does a fair job of presenting Obama's seeming diffidence towards ISIS.
Balancing Terror and Reality in State of the Union Address
WASHINGTON — When President Obama speaks to the nation in his final State of the Union address on Tuesday night, he will offer a familiar reassurance that the country is expending enormous effort to protect Americans against international terrorism.
Here is what he probably will not say, at least not this bluntly: Americans are more likely to die in a car crash, drown in a bathtub or be struck by lightning than be killed by a terrorist. The news media is complicit in inflating the sense of danger. The Islamic State does not pose an existential threat to the United States.
Yeah, yeah, he says that after the San Bernardino terrorists shot up co-workers at an office party. People with jobs getting shot? So what? if ISIS wants to provoke a response from this President they need to shoot up an abortion clinic or a gay bar.
Scott Ott, on those radical extremists who've been occupying Federal property for a while now.

I think Obama views this as validation of his Eye-Ran policies, lyle. But I doubt Vlad, Xi, King Salman, Bibi, Kim, or any other world leader thinks this is anything other than a humiliation.
Xi has what I think is the most interesting calculation. Move on Taiwan this year or wait with an increased military buildup. Even given Taiwan's forces, Xi might calculate that this year he is assured that the US POTUS will not take any strong action (other than to pontificate about how China is losing as it overruns Taiwan). Good distraction from the Chinese economy.
On the other hand, Xi might decide the best thing to do is to continue to establish dominion in the seas around Vietnam and the Philippines, and Japan.

In typical "what's up is down and what's down is up" fashion - Our detestable CIC thinks that what happened to our 10 sailors last night was a WIN! Listed a couple of guns so am back with this awful story from National Review and Stan Kurtz via Powerline.
HUD has essentially taken over Dubuque Iowa [spellcheck has never even heard of Dubuque] and is now compelling it to provide cheapo Section 8 housing to......residents of frickin Chicago! Because Rahm's minions don't provide enough slums for their underclass DC is now compelling Dubuque and its taxpayers to house Chicago's teeming masses.
To Rubio's credit he did try to defund this AFFH insanity.
I hope the Windy City denizens don't forget their illegally acquired firearms to bring Dubuque up to speed on all the benefits of the Second City lifestyle. If they do I'm sure it will somehow be because of legitimate gun dealers in Indiana.

"Xi has what I think is the most interesting calculation. Move on Taiwan this year or wait with an increased military buildup."
Alternatively, Xi can continue to devalue the yuan and capture more of Taiwan's Asian markets while putting tremendous strain on Taiwanese companies carrying high US dollar denominated debt loads. It's not as if the Eurasian Co-Prosperity Sphere is solely reliant upon military force to confront Fantasyland.
Posted by: Rick Ballard | January 13, 2016 at 03:39 PM
Thomas Collins:
I not sure how you're defining "move on Taiwan," but I don't see XI doing anything precipitous militarily. I think he started building islands as soon as he realized that Obama would sell his soul for a climate agreement and mount, at most, token resistance. My guess is that Xi's objective is to radically reshape the status quo which greets the next U.S. president in China's favor. He'll be just provocative enough to keep everybody off balance. Once the battlefield is arranged to his liking, he'll start working on the pretext for further action, assuming he does, in fact, mean to bring Taiwan back into the fold. I believe having a "just cause" or at least the appearance thereof, is important to the Chinese national psyche, and at the moment, I think they're still in the Nine-Dash Line phase.

"Iran's Swift Release of U.S. Sailors Hailed as a Sign of Warmer Relations"
Sheesh. If the boats did, in fact, intrude on Iran's territorial waters, I certainly can't fault the Iranians for rounding crews & vessels up. If anybody thinks the mullahs weren't happy to poke the President in the eye in the process, publishing those photos should pretty much remove all doubt.
Posted by: JMHanes | January 13, 2016 at 03:54 PM
Rick and JMH, you give persuasive reasons why Xi won't use military force this year against Taiwan or Japan (I use "move on" to indicate some type of military force). Here are a couple of links to articles on what China might do, and why, at least with respect to Taiwan, "moving on" won't be a snap.
http://news.usni.org/2014/02/18/navy-official-china-training-short-sharp-war-japan
http://news.usni.org/2014/03/26/taiwan-defend-chinese-attack
The reason I think military force is a possibility is that Xi must now realize that he is unlikely to get a US POTUS less inclined to defend an action against Japan or Taiwan than he has now. I acknowledge that the moves the two of you have mentioned can move the "status quo" in China's favor for the next POTUS. However, 2016 is likely to be the most opportune year if Xi decides the old fashioned method will eventually be needed to move the "status quo".

Dubuque is 91% white. The mayor and city council are all white. Maybe HUD's objective is to infuse relatively small pockets of poor blacks into overwhelmingly white communities nationwide, getting them away from the dominant urban black culture that discourages doing well in school and encourages gang involvement/criminal activity? If the exported blacks could be volunteers vetted for work history, school attendance, and lack of criminal records, it might work out well without disturbing the host community, but I bet HUD can't/won't do that.
Posted by: DebinNC | January 13, 2016 at 04:09 PM
DebinMC,
That is a hopeful outlook, but I am afraid my cynicism makes me think that Dubuque is getting a bunch of people who will disrupt the schools and cry racism at every opportunity.

TC,
Xi has to handle the removal of the Shanghai Put, devaluation and debt repudiation. If the return to economic reality is mishandled, I would expect fabrication of a causus belli, as JMH suggests, to be a prerequisite prior to mobilization.
Xi would be putting most favored nation status on the line which means the politburo thieves would incur substantial risk of being unable to steal in the manner to which they have become very accustomed. It's not as if the US is importing anything from China which could not be manufactured in the US.

maryrose - Understanding the phenomena of the Trumpster's run for the 2016 nomination is probably going to keep poli sci experts and election analysts busy for years.
One of the most interesting aspects is the similarity of some of his supporters to the Ronulans (followers of Ron Paul, and now Rand Paul to a limited degree). They howl mightily at *any* criticism of their candidate, while claiming the right to point out every perceived failing of his opposition.
Somehow, we've *all* got to come to the place where the Trumpster is subject to the same scrutiny as the others in the race.
I believe it is beginning to happen, and I have always thought that the Trumpster would not prevail once reality set in.

I heard a story that al-Jizz at 40,000 viewers at prime time. 40,000. Even MSNBC does better than that.

no they topped out at 30K, a rounding error for most networks,
except rand is going nowhere fast, it is more the issue cohort then trump personally,

2000+ US GIs KIA because of Iranian IEDs & EFPs
the Khobar Towers bombing
The two riverine craft.

Were it up to me, Bandar Abbas would be a smoking ruin right now.
Of the other six American hostages weren't released by day break, I'd level another target.
And so on.
And that skipper who apologized...

Insty has a post about ManBearPig not wanting to sell his TV network to Glenn Beck because of some BS about preserving the "legacy." So he happily sold it to Al-Jizz and--lest no one forget--timed the sale to avoid the max cap gains tax. Hey, I'm a free market capitalist but the sanctimonious hypocrisy from that pustule is a marvel.

Dunno, Michael, the electorate seems to be offended by the great general stench from Cloaca Maxima, DC. The Fascists seem to feel Comrade Sanders stinks less than Red Witch because he's never done a damned thing and 42% of the electorate find both parties to be rather offensive to the nose. The fellow who has never been an elected stinker, although he has certainly purchased and sold his share of them, seems to have an edge solely due to having never floated in the DC cesspool.

Sandy Daze,
Agree except for skipper, who has been no doubt trained to act that way by loser officers. I want to see the Rules of Engagement.
General Jack Keane on Fox now is upset about surrendering boat and weapons, but will not blame youngsters because he doesn't know the Rules of Engagement.
