Peter Baker of the Times does a fair job of presenting Obama's seeming diffidence towards ISIS.
Balancing Terror and Reality in State of the Union Address
WASHINGTON — When President Obama speaks to the nation in his final State of the Union address on Tuesday night, he will offer a familiar reassurance that the country is expending enormous effort to protect Americans against international terrorism.
Here is what he probably will not say, at least not this bluntly: Americans are more likely to die in a car crash, drown in a bathtub or be struck by lightning than be killed by a terrorist. The news media is complicit in inflating the sense of danger. The Islamic State does not pose an existential threat to the United States.
Yeah, yeah, he says that after the San Bernardino terrorists shot up co-workers at an office party. People with jobs getting shot? So what? if ISIS wants to provoke a response from this President they need to shoot up an abortion clinic or a gay bar.
What the h***?

CNN's Jim Acosta: Barack Obama in #SOTU "will call on Americans to reject the politics of Donald Trump" cc @realDonaldTrump

But, he won't mention the sailors held in Iran.
By the way, doesn't this elevate Trump? And isn't this sort of outside of normal protocol?

Let's see, Obama tells us to reject Trump. Nikki Haley tells us to reject Trump.
Hmmmm.
What to do, what to do?
Posted by: Miss Marple | January 12, 2016 at 08:25 PM
Well decrying Trump give Trump a big boost I would think. The Dems live in a dream world; to Obama, everything is about politics. He is President of the Progressives, President of the democrats and not the President of the United States.
The Democrats are a curse on this nation. It amazes me that they rule over us and suck up our wealth in order to destroy us while they enrich themselves.
Posted by: squaredance | January 12, 2016 at 08:27 PM
Obama is scum. This is the State of the Union address. Classless scum.
Posted by: GUS | January 12, 2016 at 08:28 PM
Well, MM, I refuse to watch and will depend on your watching and relating to me what happens. As far as Nikki Haley is concerned--what a stupid thing to do--criticize Trump along with Obama?
She is terribly close w/McCain and Graham and I guess just could not resist doing that--criticizing Trump. Bad move, I think.
Posted by: new lurker | January 12, 2016 at 08:29 PM
jimmyk, per that link Haley is the "inclusive" pick. She should denounce Ryan and Turtle for typecasting her that way.
Posted by: henry | January 12, 2016 at 08:30 PM
Oh and Haley crowing out "our values" is pretty rich. I rather doubt she knows what the "values" of her state is, let alone the nation.
Here we go with "America is an idea". IT is not, it is a nation, and multi-culturalism is tearing it apart. Haley would have been a democrat 30 years ago, as would most of the GOP on the Hill.
If the GOP had any stones they would let Cruz give the rebuttal. How low we have fallen.
Posted by: squaredance | January 12, 2016 at 08:31 PM
Regardless of one's views about Trump, how is it not totally inappropriate for a Republican to criticize another Republican in the SOTU rebuttal.

Posted by: Rocco | January 12, 2016 at 08:33 PM
The GOP needs to stop this delusion they have about "inclusion". They will not get the minority vote; they will not get the immigrant vote.
They will lose the vote of their actual constituency.
The Stupid Party indeed.
Posted by: squaredance | January 12, 2016 at 08:34 PM
jimmyk,
I will bet 10 bucks that this backfires on Haley and the other candidates. Obama, too, for that matter.
I expect Trump's numbers to increase.

As many of you know, I have never EVER called myself a REPUBLICAN. When I left the CANCER WARD known as the Democrat Party, I had ZERO INTENTION of joining a sick and staggered GOPeePee. If Nikki Haley mentions Trump, she is dead to me. As most of the GOPeePee is.
It's not about who gets to coach the losing team, it's about saving America before it's too late. Trump is not my guy, but he is infinitely superior to ANY COMMIECRAT.

This business about Trump shows just what a bubble the GOP establishment lives in, not to mention the absurdly low regard they hold for the rest of the country outside that bubble.
We are little more than a poorly constructed abstraction to them, and that abstraction is only used for their shameless election calculus and electioneering. The Nation itself, what it has been, is now, and what it could yet be is beyond them. It never enters into their thoughts at all, and only weakly seeps into their rhetoric.
In time they will be seen a traitors.
I doubt they or their descendants will ever even care about this--that is how narrow and childish they are.
And yet we somehow expect them to lead us out of this wasteland.

Posted by: Rocco | January 12, 2016 at 08:46 PM
squaredance,
Once, after 9/11, I was struck by how unified our country was, and glimpsed the promise of what we could be.
Cashiers asked me if I had heard anything about New York and when I thought we would strike back. Gas station attendants were listening to the radio and commented on supporting New York and the military.
We were united as a people, and despite the horrendous loss in New York, it made me feel confident of the future.
It lasted about 2 months, until HILLARY CLINTON stood in the well of the Senate waving the "Bush Knew!" headline around and demanding to know why Bush had allowed it to happen.
The democrats started the disunity at that moment, and they have been at it ever since. They are bad, bad people and should be driven from the government.
Posted by: Miss Marple | January 12, 2016 at 08:47 PM

Succmb to zenoophbia" is straight out of the marxist playbook. Note that normal, adult and commonsensical Americans has to be lectured about his "emotional state" rather than reasoned with--as if this attempt to destroy white America by means of immigration is an irrational fear.
Haley is carrying water for the Left. Why? Because she is culturally a Leftist, that is why. These are really what the RINOs are: moderate Democrats posing as Republicans
This is why the GOP is help in such contempt by its very own constituency.
It is absolutely idiotic to put Haley up there to pose as an "minority", and ?Immigrant" and a "woman". Enough of this PC nonsense.

Posted by: Miss Marple | January 12, 2016 at 08:57 PM
MM: I was a volunteer in downtown Manhattan that week. I drove by the WTC just a few minutes for the first plane hit. I saw fight jet fly over NYC. It took me 7 hours to get home.
You know, people from all over the country just showed u to help. Some just got in their cars and drove hundred of miles--they just showed up trying to help. And they send things from all over the nation. Many of these goods were stockpiled at the Javitts Convention Center on the West side of midtown. They received so much dogfood for the recuse dogs that it filled up a wall. they had to give most of it away. Amazing.
I felt great about America until the last 2 years of the Bush Administration (and no, I do not blame Bush here). I somehow figured out what was coming.
That very sense of solidarity you expressed incensed the Left. That is how evil they are. They could not bear it. They hate all the is good, true or beautiful.

1. How to give everyone a fair shake and opportunity in this economy?
2. How to make technology work for us and not against us, especially with climate change?
3. How do we keep America safe and not be the world's policeman?
4. How do we make politics reflect the best of us and not the worst?

Well the answer to those four questions is, of course, to throw every Democrat off our shores.
It is unbelievable what they think our challenges are.
What is really comic is the notion that the Democrats want a "fair shake" for anyone--any one at all. This is the very last thing they wnat
They want to live a indolent aristocrats, all the while destroying the nation that subsidize their absurd and immoral existence. A "fair shake" indeed.
