Sandy Daze

Good morning !

Jeff Dobbs

The story of Runaround Sue?

Ok, but....

With his new studio album, “New York Is My Home” (Instant) due on Feb. 16, Dion, 76, recently looked back at “Runaround Sue,” the song’s evolution and subterranean roots. Edited from an interview:

::grumble:: New York values....

I like our Sue better.

She is amassing a mini ninja army after all.

Jane

6 hostages? I know there is one guy who they didn't know if he was alive or dead, but who is the 6th one?

Centralcal on iPad

Jane: the 6 is who WE are releasing. Iran releasing 4 of ours.

 _peter

Wow! Bucky Pizzarelli and Milt Hinton played on that record?

That's what I call early fusion.

Miss Marple

No, there are 6 people the US had in custody who were released for the 4 Iran was holding.

It's a prisoner swap.

Jane

I think we should give Iran ValJar and Huma in exchange.

Sue

I like the sign. And my ninja army is in place,

They did a prisoner swap. I heard they were released and my first thought was what did we give them?

buccaneer morgan

Trading the guilty for the innocent.

Miss Marple

Twitter is full of stuff about how this is a triumph of diplomacy and such, all by the usual suspects.

Andrew Exum of the NYT is going on about how this proves the "hard-liners" on te Middle East are wrong, blah-blah.

Still can't find out who the 6 we released are.

Centralcal on iPad

Charlie Spiering

I wonder what Obama gave Iran for release of four Americans? You know, besides the $150 billion in sanctions relief

buccaneer morgan

Yes he should know better, we're probably trading the one who put the got on the Saudi ambassador who is now the foreign minister

Miss Marple

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2016/01/16/obama-proposes-unemployment-insurance-system-we-should-be-talking-about-re-employment/

Newest scam: laid-off workers who get a new job at a lower rate of pay get their income subsidized.

I think this is an admission that the new jobs aren't that great, but it also is more of the redistribution stuff.

Also a poison pill for the GOP, as it is a "free money to the working poor and middle class" and will be used in the fall campaign against them.

buccaneer morgan

Hit on the Saudi ambassador.

Cecil Turner

Trading the guilty for the innocent.

Exactly. And what will the long-term impact be, when we trade for hostages? Why, that couldn't possibly encourage them to do it again, right? Or embolden other bad actors to take hostages?

I wonder if we should throw in a two-for-one of bonus Gitmo detainees? Red light special!

Miss Marple

Clash of democrat interest groups alert!

Iranian news agency says there are seven, not six, that they are getting back.

But wait, there's more!

Iranians released by USA: Nader Modanlo, Behram Mechanic, Khosrow Afghahi, Arash Ghahreman, Tooraj Faridi, Nima Golestaneh, Ali Saboonchi.

buccaneer morgan

Modanlo is like loral space for Iran.

Jane

I want those hostages back. I don't think there is any price too high given the utter incompetence of this administration. However I think we should nuke Iran when it is all done.

The whole thing is pathetic as these guys should have been back years ago. But I want them back.

Centralcal on iPad

Well said, Jane. I agree.

buccaneer morgan

All of these people were deliberately trading with the enemy for years at a time.

Sue

Jane,

I think it's going to be Iran nuking us.

Miss Marple

Jane,

I agree that we want them back, and I am glad they are being released.

I DO object to the administration presenting this as a triumph of their Iran policy and their diplomacy.

Iran takes hostages and to get them back we give them what they want. Plus extras. And then we THANK them.

A guy on Twitter compared it to Iran being both the arsonist and the firefighter.

Centralcal on iPad

Ugh, Sue. Ain't that the truth!

The Infamous Ignatz

I take it Dion will not be voting for Cruz.

The Infamous Ignatz

Have we ever gotten more than we gave?
Say what you want about Trump, I'll wager he wouldn't cut a deal until he could say he made a fabulous one.

Jeff Dobbs

On the assumption that everything he says is a lie, this might be worrisome for Miss Marple...

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory/obama-highlight-louisiana-decision-expand-medicaid-36280742

With Obama now in his final year in office, the focus naturally has shifted to who will succeed him. At a town hall event Thursday with Louisiana residents, Obama was asked if there’s any chance he could talk the first lady into running.

His answer? An emphatic “no.”

“There are three things that are certain in life: Death, taxes and Michelle is not running for president,” he said. “That I can tell you.”

Thomas Collins

This swap news puts Iran taking our sailors hostage in a new light. The Eye-ranians knew this deal was going down, and possibly took our sailors hostage to show the Middle East which country is the strong horse. Alternatively, perhaps the US was negotiating not to return all six Eye-Ranians, and caved to get our sailors back in addition to the other four Iran was holding.

Miss Marple

Jeff,

ACK! I have worried about that for 2-3 years. I sort of forgot about it because of Bernie.

Centralcal on iPad

Yep, TC.

Also, I suppose Iran wants to make certain they are Obama's "legacy."

and why am I unmoved about a WaPo "journalist" who had worked and lived in Iran for the previous 6 years before his arrest. We've probably been snookered on both sides of the deal.

The Infamous Ignatz

Some no-name pustule who surprisingly has a name, David Atkins, on the sidebar at memorandum wrote one of those columns that seems to defy the laws of chance by not getting anything right. I won't even link the mass of frog blanket he wrote but I thought this gem was worth blockheadquoting;

Their [Trump and Cruz] exclusionary, divisive and even totalitarian-inspired politics show an extreme lack of judgment and poor temperament for the office that should give any reasonable voter pause regardless of their views on the issues of the day.

Does this half witted peckerwood think Barry has sounded inclusive, unifying and liberty loving these last eight years?
Does he think the arsenic spiked lies oozing out of Hillary's face do or that the barking dog Sanders is spreading love and sunshine every time he hits anyone too close with a spittle flecked neo-Marxist rant?
This is like cleo with one of his unwitting 'redemptive self awareness' boomerangs;

"These damned totalitarians with their vicious Nazi ideas are dividing people and calling them names."

I totally believe that.

fed up ...

stunning if true that the administration is working to spike the Argentinian investigation.

The Infamous Ignatz

--Hearing that, as part of swap, US pressured Interpol to cease pursuing bombers of the Jewish center in Argentina.-

I would not doubt that for a minute since the tentacles of that and the covering for the culprits reached right up to Barry's pal Cristina Kirchner herself, which is why that judge investigating it in Buenas Aires a year or two ago committed "suicide".

Save two groups of leftist thugs; a win/win.

I agree Sue. I became a news junkie during the 444 days hostage crisis. I want our hostages back. And yes, at this cost.

Give them Beau Bergdahl, Mooch and Val Jar instead.

I agree the terms screw us, but think of it this way. Obama screws us constantly and we usually get nothing in return.

Sue

If I didn't hate Trump before, the Geraldo exchange would do it.

Thomas Collins

Clown show or not (Rick Ballard), disaster as a POTUS or not (JM Hanes), object of hatred or not (Sue), blowhard or not (TC), if Trumpster could get Nikki Haley on board right now as his Veep, the GOP nomination race would be over before the first Iowa caucaser went to his or her appropriate place in the room. And the Dems would be hard pressed to put together a combo to amass 270 electoral college votes against Trumpster and Haley.

Jeff Dobbs

And while I'm crawling around on twitter - let's just note that the gloves are truly off for Trump re Cruz...these over the span of a couple of hours this morning:

And his latest tweet refers to a NYT article from last April about a Cruz fundraiser hosted by a gay couple - with Trump calling Cruz the ultimate hypocrite.

Jeff Dobbs

a Cruz fundraiser hosted by a gay couple ... in Manhattan.

The reference is to the NY values kerfuffle, of course.

The Infamous Ignatz

TC is just trolling TK for an anchor baby debate.

The Infamous Ignatz

In Trump's world possibly not reporting a relatively small loan correctly that you took out against your own assets is much worse than, say, not paying back hundred of millions in loans you stiffed others for in bankruptcy.

Thomas Collins

Uh-oh. Ignatz thinks I trolling. Now I am really going to open myself up to that charge. If Cruz or Rubio could cut such a deal with Haley, I also think the race would be over. And if Kasich or Jebster or Christie could cut such a deal, although the race wouldn't be over, one of those three would get a big boost.

Fanciful? I don't think so. It's hard for me to see how the GOP POTUS candidates could overlook the potential benefit of such a blockbuster announcement before Iowa.

Jeff Dobbs

Let's say the GOP ticket is Cruz-Haley and the Dems nominated Bernie. Bernie would need to select Sasha Obama as his running mate - or someone her age - in order to keep the combined age of the two tickets even.

(Hillary could choose Malia and still have a younger ticket than Cruz-Haley)

BTW, I'm sure it's been mentioned, but if either were elected - Rubio and Cruz would pass Bill Cinton to become the third youngest president to assume office behind Teddy R and JFK...it would also knock Obama out of the top 5.

Mark Levin offering some friendly advice to Trump on going after Cruz...

https://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10153195320990946

Either cut the crap - your accusations this morning that Cruz is Canadian, a criminal, owned by big banks, etc. (see link below) - or you will lose lots and lots of conservatives. Save the liberal New York City bully tactics for the New York City liberals. Put down your computer keyboard for a few hours, think before you tweet, and collect yourself. You're not politically invincible, regardless of the polls and media. I am already hearing more and more people getting fed up with the low road you're taking against Cruz, which has obviously intensified this morning. You don't need to attack his honor or attempt to smear his reputation. You can leave that to Mitch McConnell and the New York Times. Engage on real and substantive issues that matter to the country. Like I said, my friendly advice.

MaryD

LOL. Sue! Why did I just think of our Miss M?

PS -- good for your granddaughter!

Levin is trolling for a NY Values hit from the Clown. It's all PRO WRESTLING TONIGHT!! but it's still amusing.

TC,

Do you remember the Deaniacs in their beanies trudging through the snow in Iowa peddling enough progressive horseshit to finish YEARGGH!? There's no substantive difference between YEARGGH! and YUUUGE!! but at least there aren't any stories about Trumpeteers wearing Golden Marmoset headgear trudging through the Iowa snow peddling NY Values.

You neglected to mention what inducement would be offered to Haley to get her on the YUUUGE!! ticket. She couldn't help but improve the odds but she might have plans for a Senate run in a few years and the association wouldn't be much help.

"Say what you want about Trump, I'll wager he wouldn't cut a deal until he could say he made a fabulous one."

Which is, of course, true by definition of any deal he makes.

Thomas Collins

Here's my answer to Levin: Trumpster has always been a wheeler dealer Dem type. What we've learned from this campaign is that Trump can talk a good talk show game on foreign policy and lax immigration standards. We knew that before his attacks on Cruz, and we still know it. If one is voting for Trump in the hopes one will get support for entitlement reform, solid federal judge appointments and a reining in of the administrative state, one will be disappointed. If one wants to support a serious, thoughtful thinker on foreign policy and national security matters, convince James Mattis to run.

Thomas Collins

I agree that it would be a risk for Haley, Rick. But I think even if Trump imploded, it would put her in a good place for a 2020 or 2024 POTUS run. And if she cut a deal with one of the others, even better for her.

Jeff Dobbs

With 17 days until the Iowa caucusuesuses (sp?), the national poll average at RCP:

Cruz 19.3
Rubio 11.8

2012
Gingrich 32.4
Romney 22.6
Paul 9.6

2008
Giuliani 22.8
Huckabee 20.3
Romney 15.7
McCain 12.5

Miss Marple

Checking in for a second:

1. Odds of Trump choosing Haley seem very small to me, plus I do not see what she would add to the ticket. I am not a political expert though, so maybe there is something I am missing.

2. Trump attacks on Cruz indicate to me Trump sees a possibility of winning Iowa. If Cruz had a commanding lead he wouldln't bother, and if Trump were ahead by a bit, he wouldn't attack, either.

3. In Iowa you can register as GOP right up to the night of the caucus when you show up. I think this makes Iowa a little hard to predict, plus there is weather to be considered.

4. Unknown is how many blue-collar dems will caucus for Trump. I find it very interesting that there is little on Trump's ground game and what they are doing is being held close to the vest. What if he is getting union help? Just something to consider.

Cecil Turner

Yes, it's nice to get them back. But they'll simply take more, and why shouldn't they, given that the candy is free?

Exactly. Reward hostage taking . . . get more hostage taking. This ain't rocket science. And to dispel any doubt that's what happened:

The prisoner-swap maneuvering showed that, for Iran, Rezaian’s innocence was “immaterial” and that what mattered more was whether he could be used to extract political concessions from the United States, The Post argued in its latest submission to the U.N. Working Group in late November.
Nuking them immediately afterward might have an instructive effect . . . giving them 100+ billion dollars, not so much.

Rick Ballard

TC,

I find your response to Levin to be seriously lacking in cowbell and seltzer bottle. You have failed to address the seriousness of the allegations with the dignified probity which any defense of the Golden Marmoset demands.
