Sue

I love your anti-Keugman posts.

It's probably time for the courts to sort this out. America has sustained more than a half century of untrammeled immigration, and this question is going to keep coming up until it's finally sorted.

buccaneer morgan

Splunge but I'm not being indecisive.

A curveball. :-(

Jim Miller

daddy - Thanks for recommending "The Martian", which I have been reading a chapter or two at a time. (I don't think you intended to recommend it, but what you said about it made me think I would like it, and I do.)

Still wondering whether you would like the Dominic Flandry stories.

"The space opera series is set in the 31st century, during the waning days of the Terran Empire. Flandry is a dashing field agent of the Imperial Intelligence Corps who travels the stars to fight off imminent threats to the empire from both external enemies and internal treachery."

Miss Marple

Am watching the undercard debate. Suddenly emphasis on blue collar workers, which I think is good and a sign Trump has affected things.

Hhuckabee gave a very stirring talk about how hard people are working.

Santorum followed talking about the 75% of the people who don't have college degrees.

Fiorina is now talking about the Iran ship seizure and now is doing her usual name-dropping about who she knows and says she will be a Commander in Chief who leads.

Sue

Why is our immigration system broken? Everyone uses that phrase but never tells us what is broken.

Red Witch

I'm investing $1000 on cattle futures.
Who needs the stock market

Janet

I wish all the Republican candidates were on the main stage. Paul brings up good, strong points and he stresses different things.
Fiorina too.
I'd rather see Paul, Fiorina, & even Huckabee than Kasich or Jeb.

Janet

Why is our immigration system broken? Everyone uses that phrase but never tells us what is broken.

Exactly.

Miss Marple

Janet,

I agree.

There is no reason to me that Jeb should be on the main stage and the others not.

GUS

Our immigration system is broken, so we need COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM.

See how that works!!! Libtards tell us there is a problem that only AMNESTY can fix!!!!

Unfortunately the real problem is an ILLEGAL INVASION of OUR country. Which GOPeePee candidate is saying just that?????

Miss Marple

Huckabee is knocking it out of the park.

Flat-out said president needs to quit worrying about Muslims being victims of hate crimes and worry about Jews. Says no one believes the background checks they say they will do on refugees since San Bernadino shooter packed 3.
Says we should stop visa waiver program.

Lots of scathing comments about Obama, lots of cheers from audience.

Miss Marple

Santorum now going on about EMP attacks and says president hasn't done anything about it. Talks about protecting the electric grid. Says EMP attack will stop cars, planes, the whole deal.

Miss Marple

I recommend watching this undercard debate as it is really good and full of substance. Plus not one of them is being at all nice to Obama.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Our immigration system is fine, it just isn't enforced.
Our government is broken and broke.

Miss Marple

Huckabee talking about the talk of making blue collar guys work til they are 70. Asks if anyone knows what it's like to work on a concrete floor of a factory.

Jack is Back (but On Alert)!

Paul is in the lower debate? Wow. Can't keep a promise. Won't get my vote.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Angelo Codevilla on Cruz vs the GOPe and 2nd Gen neocons.

Janet

No. Paul didn't come to the lower tier debate. He was never gonna get your vote anyway.

I just like that he highlights different issues.
Huckabee does too.

Miss Marple

Good news! Looks like the California winner is a hard-working person who has raised productive children!

http://abc7.com/news/pomona-nurse-won-powerball-jackpot-from-ticket-given-to-her-from-boss/1159522/

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Why can't Cruz or Rubio seek declaratory relief on their eligibility issue?
The lawyers here can correct me but declaratory relief or a declaratory judgment is basically an expedited method by which a person can seek a court's ruling on a purported legal dispute regarding their rights, duties, obligations etc, without waiting for it to ripen into a lawsuit.

lyle

Great link, Ig. I love whoever was quoted as saying, inter alia, that he was horrified that Cruz criticized Mitch McConnell, saying MM was a "staunch conservative." Typical GOPe jackhole.

FWIW, I'm dropping my WSJ subscription. Can't take it any longer. It's been 25 years, too.

cheerleader

Trump has suggested multiple times that Cruz get a court declaration.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Planned Parenthood sues Center for Medical Progress.

The national organization, along with its California affiliate, is accusing the Center for Medical Progress and its organizer David Daleiden for unlawful behavior ranging from secret taping to trespassing. The group said the Center for Medical Progress has violated the laws of three states as well as federal law.

“Today, Planned Parenthood is going on the offense,” Kathy Kneer, president of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California said in a call with reporters.

In response, Daleiden released a statement that said “game on.”

“I look forward to deposing all the CEOs, Medical Directors, and their co-conspirators who participated in Planned Parenthood's illegal baby body parts racket,” he said.

I suspect PP will eventually realize it has made a bad situation for itself considerably worse.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Yes but Trump has a way of making it sound like he doesn't know what he's talking about even when he does.

GUS

Who is your favorite Ignatz? Of the 10 or so remaining, who is your #1.

cheerleader

To people who resent, that's correct.

lyle

Zealotry has a way of making bad situations worse. That and horribly misplaced self-righteousness. I wish someone--anyone--would sometime force the PP zealots to own up to M. Sanger's astonishing anti-black bigotry. It's not like she took pains to hide it.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--To people who resent, that's correct.-

Yeah, I really don't know what that means.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--Who is your favorite Ignatz?--

Well GUS, since Hulagu Khan is not on the ballot I guess I'd go with Cruz as my distant second choice.

NK

Ig-- here is the text of the Federal Declaratory Judgment Act, an ACTUAL controversy, rather than hypothetical one is needed for standing. So there would have to be an actual dispute, like electors refusing to vote for him in the Electoral College or a State refusing to include him on a ballot:

Specifically, the Federal Declaratory Judgment Act states:
"In a case of actual controversy within its jurisdiction, . . . any court
of the United States, upon the filing of an appropriate pleading,
may declare the rights and other legal relations of any interested
party seeking such declaration, whether or not further relief is or
could be sought. Any such declaration shall have the force and
effect of a final judgment or decree and shall be reviewable as
such."

Jack is Back!

Janet,

Not nice. How do you know about how I think about Rand Paul?

Thomas Collins

There has to be a real case or controversy between litigants, Ignatz. Cruz or Rubio can't go into federal court and ask for what essentially would be an advisory opinion. I'll leave it to others more versed in federal court litigation as to whether Trump could go into federal court and secure a declaratory judgment concerning Cruz's or Rubio's eligibility.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--an ACTUAL controversy, rather than hypothetical one is needed for standing--

Thanks NK. That's what I was afraid of.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

And, TC.

NK

ThomasC-- exactly, no Federal Court advisory opinions, they decide actual cases and controversies.

Thomas Collins

Whoops! I hadn't seen your post, NK. Actually, I futzed around with mine so much that I think yours came online while I was writing mine.

Jane

ThomasC-- exactly, no Federal Court advisory opinions, they decide actual cases and controversies.

IOW, it's not ripe.

Jack is Back!

My knee finally gave out to the 11's. After 3 gel injections, a draining and tons of ice I am immobile in bed with a dose of Oxy Codone which I have avoided for 4 years. Took me forever to walk upstairs. Football does catch with you even 45 years later. And I thought I was lucky to not have an ACL or MCL during those days. But guess what all that torquing creates incipient arthritis you now get to live with in your later years.

Come on Oxy, live up to your hype.

clarice

Sorry JIB.

Thomas Collins

Whoa! I hope the procedures get you up and walking soon, JiB, and that the oxy does it's work in the meantime.

clarice

When the pain subsides you may want to start working out at a good pilates studio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ct12YkFqpI

buccaneer morgan

Sorry to hear that jib.

Discovery is a notion moloch's counsel seem to have missed.

Thomas Collins

Jane, do you think Trump might surmount both the standing and ripeness issues with the argument that he is being forced to spend resources against a candidate who is not eligible? I myself would decide the case on political question grounds on the reasoning that this is something for the electoral college, not the federal courts, to address.

Miss Marple

My sympathies, Jack. I have had a knee re-alignment and am doing my best to avoid further surgery. My sister the nurse has a knee replacement scheduled for February.

Hope the meds take effect soon!

PDinDetroit

Sorry to hear that JiB - hope they gave you 10/325's instead of 5/325's.

lyle

Sorry to hear that, Jack.

buccaneer morgan

So the market bathysphete is going to mere laurentian or full marianas

anonamom

I'll second Pilates.
My bad knee (skiing injury 20 years ago) and sore hip love it--and let me know when I go too long without.
Ask around to get an experienced instructor.

clarice

It has proven to be a miracle for me, too, Anonamom

Jane

Jane, do you think Trump might surmount both the standing and ripeness issues with the argument that he is being forced to spend resources against a candidate who is not eligible?

Good argument TC, altho I don't think Trump spends anything. As a lawyer I have absolutely no idea. Plus I know longer trust the courts to not put their own politics into the mix. But as far as I'm concerned it's a stupid issue ginned up by Trump to destroy Cruz.

Jack is Back!

Pilates? Hell I want to be able to walk down the stairs. Watching the pre- debate with Frederick in bed. He joined us for that reason. He likes Ben Carson but says Trump will win. Why do like Carson? He's a Neurosurgeon and that is what the country needs: A full lobotomy.

His words not mine.

Iowa crushing MSU in the roundball game. Ranked team chaos abounds.

GUS

Ig, I'd vote for Cruz today.
Jack. I broke both ankles and did the ACL thingy. I played both Soccer and Football.
And I stupid about it. I played hurt, I could not stand NOT to play.
I'm paying for it. Godspeed brother.

Sue

Frederick is a smart boy.

buccaneer morgan

I have been disappointed at the ways the knives have come out for doctor Carson.

GUS

Yes he is Sue, he owns a Les Paul.

JiB, sorry about the knee problems. What's the prognosis? Replacement? PT?

Jeff Dobbs

How the heck did I get back from pool in time to watch the debate?!?1!?!?

I'm gonna have a few cross words with my manager.

GUS

Jeff, were you swimming laps???

GUS

Bingo Senator Cruz. Obama is a clusterfok of nonsense.

Jeff Dobbs

I was, Gus.

Debate thread.

middyfeek

If you only read the comments and not Tom Maguire's original post you would never guess that this thread is putatively about the stock market.

This sort of thing happens far too often around here. Maguire puts up thoughtful, well-written posts and you people go off on whatever tangent pleases you.
