Cecil Turner

Conservative treehouse dude's core complaint:

With control of the House and Senate did Majority Leader Mitch McConnell or House Speaker John Boehner use the same level of severity expressed by Harry Reid to put a repeal bill on the desk of Obama for veto? Simply, NO.

Why not? According to you it’s the “core tenet of American conservatism”.

If for nothing but to accept and follow the will of the people. Despite the probability of an Obama veto, this was not a matter of option. While the method might have been “symbolic”, due to the almost guaranteed veto, it would have stood as a promise fulfilled.

Tired, dull, and bad timing. Two weeks ago:
“Republicans in the Congress have attempted to repeal or undermine the Affordable Care Act over 50 times,” Obama said in a statement. “Because of the harm this bill would cause to the health and financial security of millions of Americans, it has earned my veto.”
Promise fulfilled? Happy? How many people even noticed?

All this infection talk: our next door neighbor has been in and out of hospitals here and in 'Murica since last August. Staph in and around his spine. Drain tubes, hospital bed at home, nurses at certain phases, multiple shuttles by yours truly, sheesh what a mess. I think he's through the worst, but who knows.

Sorry I posted this on other thread before I realized there was a new thread but am reposting it anyway.

Have any of you heard of an organization called "40 Days for Life". Our church has become involved. Starting Feb. 9th (1st day of Lent) we will go to the PP in Plano at 6:00 pm and pray for 1 hour every day thru Lent. Here's a link to their FB page.

The Infamous Ignatz

Seems to me a good case can be made the Republican party is in mortal danger because of its stupidity, but it is a stupidity quite the opposite of what the intellectualoids imagine.

Most people acknowledge either explicitly [on the right] or implicitly [on the left, through its gangster, power-by-any-means-other-than-honest-debate strategy] that the right won the intellectual war.

What it lost (and why people are so angry) is the war of doing, not the war of thinking. And it lost because the right was ruled largely by the self important eggheads who wanted a polite (or perhaps even a bit naughty at times) debating society in uneasy alliance with the GOP old bulls and the big business Chamber of Commerce glad handers who oppose everything the eggheads believe except the profits and cash that flow from the economic eggheads' theories.

Left behind with the meager, moldy table scraps and a huge case of heartburn were all the saps made up of families and entrepreneurs and employees and the middle class and social conservatives and churchgoers.

That's why a short fingered vulgarian with funny hair and the mouth of a perch who tells all the smart set SOB's to eff off is so popular and why arguments about how he isn't a proper egghead and isn't polite and isn't purely from the Austrian school and all the rest just make him more popular; people want to see the criminals on the left and the prim little pearl claspers and hog snouted party bosses kicked vigorously in the testes until they all stop, drop and roll.

There is no easy way out for the Repubs. Once you have lost all credibility with people of good faith you have a real problem.

The Dems have no such problem. They made their deal with Mephistopheles long ago and do not even pretend to govern in good faith or on behalf of people of good faith. Their long term problem is the one Faust discovered and is personified by the corpulent demon in a pantsuit they pinned their hopes on.

The Reps OTOH hand need to transform themselves into a party of action. That reality is why people who otherwise would run screaming from a guy like Trump recognize that he has a point and that if his kick-em-in-the-balls attitude could be grafted onto the lily-livered, Casper Milquetoast eggheads perhaps the tide could be turned.
If you continually promise to do things and don't deliver to people who desperately need something done they will quite rationally turn to someone who promises to break every piece of China in the shop because an unpredictable kick-ass is a perfectly rational alternative to known pussies who are afraid of their own shadow and NEVER DELIVER.

Buckeye

"And, Buckeye, there is no evidence she likes men either."

No argument with that, but there is clear evidence she had sex with Wade Hubbell, at least once.

Looks like the active shooter thing was a false alarm.

The worst part is because it was "breaking news" it brought Shep Smith to my TV before 3:00 PM.

Something occurred to me:

What is the difference between the NR types screaming someone isn't conservative enough and the Melissa what's her name on MSNBC screaming Herman Cain isn't authentic black or the Univision guys labeling Cruz and Rubio sell outs??

They sure have made their arguments based on this progressive trope.

Cecil Turner

yes, it was entirely a proforma bill

Of course it was. But are we happy now? Is the promise fulfilled? So why am I still reading this drivel about the great plan--which is obviously no plan at all--a couple weeks later?

At some point, we probably ought to admit--to ourselves if nobody else--that complaint was silly.

Buckeye

The real problem with politicians is that they are generally not likable.

I am sure I could tolerate almost anyone running as a Republican as the next President.

But I can't think of one that I like well enough to leave my dog with them for a week.

Miss Marple

Ignatz,

Well said!

You really DO need a column on American Thinker. Maybe you could be the "American DOER."

It really is annoying to hear all of this stuff from various wings of the GOP when they have failed to deliver on anything. Plus, I would bet cash money neither Rich Lowry nor Charles Cooke could start a snow-blower, let alone operate a chainsaw.

Miss Marple

Buckeye,

If you left your dog with Trump he would probably put him up in the Trump Dog Kennels (soon to be announced) which would have Renaissance decor, comfortable dog beds, and a YUGE exercise yard. Only the finest dogs stay at Trump Kennels. Fabulous. And YUGE!

Miss Marple

clarice,

A friend of mine pays attention to Sarah Palin's Facebook page, and said that Palin met with Trump last year. She also said she remembered that Palin said something about keeping voters involved and engaged as a way to increase turnout.

I also have read in various places little snippets about how the Trump organization would not let reporters into their headquarters because they didn't want to telegraph what they were doing.

I think they are running a stealth operation which is being missed because it's being handled through social media and emails and such. Very interesting, if true.

Old Lurker:

It took almost two years of unpredictable, debilitating, fevers and high anxiety probing by hematologists, oncologists, infectious disease specialists, to diagnose what appears to have been my brother-in-law's Legionnaire's disease. That's what he was ultimately treated for with something like six weeks of high-test antibiotics. Ironically, if that's the word for it, the defining symptoms at the onset of Legionnaires actually seem to have been masked by the antibiotics he had received after a major operation.

When it comes to all things medical, I do whatever my daughter tells me to do. And when that means surgery, she not only picks the doctor, she also checks the hospital's post-operative infection rates. The basic safety stats in the US News Hospital Rankings, for instance, include some surprising lapses.

lyle,

Funny. I read that article yesterday.

I bought some Winchester Ranger T (the improved descendant of the maligned Black Talon) from an online seller a couple of weeks ago. In a reaction to your posting the link to the article, I went to check the seller's website to see if they have any in stock in other calibers, and a screenshot of the banner and headline from the Schlichter article is on their homepage.

I thought I was having a senior moment for a second.

I'm afraid this is a dangerous misdiagnosis.

Yes, the right won the intellectual war (by default). But what the left (thanks to their ownership and weaponization of legacy media and social media) won is the social war, or the social pressure war, if you like. The judgments people make before they think, or because signals around them warn that they are not allowed to think about the subject (gay "marriage", Islam, Obama's "success", "racism", etc. etc. etc.).

Sure Trump is bucking this trend on the small subset of issues on which he's been converted (by Ann Coulter's book, apparently), but any charge into action by a man, party, or administration not thoroughly familiar with the conservative critiques of the left is going to produce a lot of destructive leftist policy... because that's the default people have in their heads.

Anyone who expects better from Trump than from Ahnuld or Ventura is deluding himself. Without intellectual understanding, eventual capture by left orthodoxy is unavoidable.

(Mind you, NRO has also been captured... but that's another story.)

The LAT story about CBO makes me shake with anger. The Bottom line Obummercare destroyed the functioning individual marketplace for 5+M consumers paying for insurance w/o subsidy, replaced with 2M people paying MORE for insurance w/o subsidy, hooked in 11M with $56B in subsidies, the rest went on Medicaid for about $100 B/year. No new ground broken in this piece but this is too good:

Take a look at the comments to any negative piece about Donald Trump. Hysteria and anger are the hallmarks of his fans. In this respect Trump fans are a bit like Obama fans back in the it-was-dawn-to-be-alive-then days of 2008 when Obama was promising to heal the earth and slow the rise of the seas. That all seems queasy-making now, like the scent of whiskey the morning after.

Only sorry that Bibi felt compelled to mix with that crowd, but he had the only halfway decent quote of the bunch:

Good point, jimmyk. The rest of the quotes carry all the intellectual weight of a gratifying post-prandial eructation and even less long-lived.

Why is this so freaking difficult for the GOPe, for the Jebs and Rubios and the m-f-ing consultants to understand?

It doesn't have to mean emulating every mannerism and tone of Trump. But it does mean being AGGRESSIVE. Attacking the Dems. Going after them and their endless list of sins and hypocrisies and failures HARD and PERSONALLY and REPEATEDLY.

But they're not willing to do that, and Trump is, and we are where we are.

The Infamous Ignatz

--I'm afraid this is a dangerous misdiagnosis.--

How?
The diagnosis you give is the symptom of the leftist disease of direct action in capturing the institutions and culture through an active strategy of infiltration, dominance, coercion and intimidation.
They actively "did" something that had no ideological legitimacy but as a tactic in support of their strategy of cultural and social and ultimately political coercion was supremely effective.

The right prattled on about how fine and lovely Western Civilization is while the pinkos ignored the WestCiv lecture and went about undermining and destroying it. What you describe is pretty much EXACTLY what I described, with a different label.

Of course Trump will do a terrible job compared to a committed conservative bent on kicking the left's ass. Until that guy shows up, bloviators like Trump are going to keep looking pretty good compared to our real world choices of Mush and Mushier.

Cruz, who appears to be the only one remotely like an actual hardnosed conservative, has his own set of problems which he may or may not resolve.

Anyone who expects any one else in the present field of well meaning GOP pecksniffs to be anything but another disappointing tax collector for the welfare state has already cornered the market on delusion.

Iggy for President.

lyle

Name the political party!:

He’s more fanatical. Trump is a bully and bigot but doesn’t hew to any sharp ideological line. Cruz is a fierce ideologue: He denies the existence of man-made climate change, rejects same-sex marriage, wants to abolish the Internal Revenue Service, believes the 2nd amendment guarantees everyone a right to guns, doesn’t believe in a constitutional divide between church and state, favors the death penalty, opposes international agreements, embraces a confrontational foreign policy, rejects immigration reform, demands the repeal of “every blessed word of Obamacare,” and takes a strict “originalist” view of the meaning of the Constitution.

Doesn't really matter who wrote it, does it? Pretty much sums up the Uniparty.™
