Beasts, I loved the article on Dabo Swinney. Thanks for posting. My goddaughter and her husband are both Clemson graduates, live in Charleston, and will be at the big game on Monday.
I would like to make a friendly bet. I'm wagering 3 dozen home made chocolate chip cookies. I use the recipe from Tate's Bake Shop in South Hampton. I think that JiB and Frederick would attest that they are the best.
(pizza at Famous Famiglia in Manhattan on May 31, 2011.)
DJT: "I would love that because she really is somebody that knows what’s happening, and she’s a special person. She’s really a special person. And I think people know that… she’s got a following that’s unbelievable. I still have people saying, “Oh, get Sarah’s support, get Sarah’s support!” No matter where I go, everybody loves her."
Okay, so the above linked article is from 29 July 2015.
The essay concerns his first-hand impressions of DJT's rally in Burlington Vermont on Thursday last. This is the longest Steyn essay I have ever seen him post. Very detailed.
FWIW, I watched that rally on youtube, the third Trump rally I have watched (San Antonio and Lowell, Mass being the other two). While the media reporting on these rally say they are rambling incoherence, my take is that actually, there is structure and focus. I encourage those that might dissent from that view, if you have not watched a Trump rally, please do so:
Cruz in the role formerly held by VP Cheney, the Constitutional Darth Vadar. HEH.
After eight years of Trump, then eight years of Cruz.
I could be very happy with that.
I will wager you some of my now worthless Deutsche Marks that in very short order these "misunderstood youth" from Syria will be packing heat. They won't be at all bothered by the firearms laws
So if the cops train their water cannons on the real trouble makers, they will be ready.
I was watching some old episodes of baa has blacksheep, and Kirby reminded of an actor who was on that show wk Stratton segued into magnum pi. But reached his toadying apotheosis on jag.

Stay warm stephanie. Would you believe my 470 with 205K miles was gone within 24 hours of hubby putting it up on craigs list? I thought it would go to a container ship and the pampas but it found a nice home in Canton.
For anyone wanting to read the full 92 page document of Teaxs Governor Abbott calling for a Con Con, I put it up in the comments this morning. I have now finished it and have some comments up. Whatever his personal intentions it is straight out of the Constitution in 2020 push.
We saw the numbers that turned out for the early Tea Party gatherings, and then the Beck gathering in WDC.
Then the jack-booted thugs stepped on people's necks and the movement, for all intents and purposes, had to go underground, but like dutiful partisans, still voted for the republicans in 2010 and 2014.
They have/we have/I have been poorly served by those whom we elected.
Doesn't mean that we have gone, we have only gone underground.
Just because one is a democrat does not mean that one is necessarily a communist or socialist. There are many dems who believe in traditional America, that find the current administration not to be a suitable reflection of their beliefs, of all that is good, true, or beautiful
In fact, I think they find the current administration to be not-so-good, not truthful, and not at all beautiful; errr, that is, they find the current group to be bad, liars, and ugly. Both dems and repubs.
Sometimes, when the baby is ugly, ya gotta say so.
Trump is saying so, he is saying that this baby is gawd-awfulugly.
These dems, the former dem who posted to your fb account, and the anecdotal information I observe, suggest to me that America is on the cusp of a massive political event, a realignment or at least of convergence, a harmony in the electoral process which we have not seen since Nixon's victory over McGovern in 1972.
Now, I am no elections scientist, and my blowing smoke up my own shorts, is not a favorite past-time. I am all too aware of self-delusion, and perhaps I have been hypnotized. I remind myself past performance is not necessarily a predictor of future earnings.
I could be (and likely am) way way way off on this.
BTW - did you read the Steyn piece I linked earlier? Most strongly recommended.
sbw, you asked about a NYC meetup Jan 19th+. I'm around and pretty flexible except for Fri evening and maybe Saturday daytime. I'll let rse chime in as her schedule is probably tighter. And I think JiB will be around that weekend too.
Incidentally, I will be in DC all next week with evenings free if anyone in the area wants to meet up. Not a big deal, as we met up over the summer, and I'll probably be around DC fairly frequently (like once/month) over the next eight months.
I think, as Buckeye said a thread or so back, that the FU quotient is so high and widespread this cycle that the old attacks ("You killed my Mama with your asbestos and lack of health care" or "You used to like Hillary! and said different things in the past" just ain't gonna work this time on many voters from all camps.
I know I personally won't even listen to my old fav "Newshour with BB" anymore because frankly I just do not care what they think anymore, and if I won't listen to them, you know I am not listening to any of the others.
I mean seriously. Don't we learn more here than from any other outlet, with the collected wisdom at JOM and the "certified useful" links we get here? I know I do.
The attacks (and resultant 10-1 air time) is what's fueling the Trump campaign. And I'm still not sure if it's some very stupid people making dumb attacks, or some very smart people trying to select a fatally flawed candidate . . . though it's probably a bit of both.
Fatally flawed candidate, Cecil? Sure in "normal times", but to borrow a phrase from a previous thread on a different subject..."But it is different this time!"
I am more flexible I suspect towards the weekend as the diva gets used to getting around with me, she is likely to want to ditch me. I am looking forward to doing the Tenement Museum, the Morgan, and the Frick. None of those are places my kids had an interest in and it has been years since I was there without them.
As I think I said, we are staying in the Grand Central area and I am getting a metrocard for both of us as soon as we get there so we can just swipe and ride. I suspect we will be having dinner Tuesday night at a little Italian that used to be a speakeasy near Dylans on Third and 61. The Diva likes her known haunts and there she loves the marinara.
Sandy, I liken it more to Reagan, 80. Carter fuxed the dems then and Obama is doing it now.
I've been querying folks around here and black, white, latino whatever they are not happy citizens. They know something is wrong and are not happy with the double talk and lies. All in for Trump for the most part, they are.
I'm still in the Cruz camp, but Trump is my second choice. If it ain't Cruz, elect Trump and burn it down.
Old Lurker, since you are sitting out there on the ledge, thought you might enjoy some reading on something totally different:
It seems to me that there are as many opportunities for confusion as for enlightenment in linking the ambitions of art and religion. There is much to bemoan about the state of art and culture today. Above all, there is a lack of seriousness underwritten by a lack of traditional skill. But in this sense, the emancipation of art from religion is less an impediment than an opportunity. As Auden noted in his reflections on Christianity and art: “We cannot have any liberty without license to abuse it. The secularization of art enables the really gifted artist to develop his talents to the full; it also permits those with little or no talent to produce vast quantities of phony or vulgar trash.”
Supposedly, Trump's current support is strongest in West Virginia, followed by NY. I don't know what to make of that, but wily NY libs conspiring to make Trump the R nominee seems unlikely.
. . . but wily NY libs conspiring to make Trump the R nominee seems unlikely.
Does that seem less likely than the third bluest state in the nation (with a lefty trend) suddenly turning red? Because if it does, I have this nice little bridge . . .
But if that was in response to my contention above, I was referring to media types, not R primary voters.
Either one of us is not a soothsayer or the logical paradox will cause the universe to wink out of existence come November.
There are several other possibilities, the most heartening of which is the Donald, after losing several early primaries, decides to gracefully bow out of the race. (Yeah, I know, I said most heartening, not most likely.)
C-SPAN is live broadcasting Trump's 5 pm EST event in Clear Lake Iowa, that's in about half an hour. I don't know if it means they're televising it or live streaming it over the internet.
He's starting to close the deal in Iowa and will be spending quite a lot of time there over the next few weeks.
Monday he was in Lowell MA
Tuesday he was in Claremont NH
Thursday he was in Burlington VT
Friday he was in Rock Hill S.C.
Saturday he was in Ottumwa IA at 2 p.m. and will be in Clear Lake IA at 5 p.m.
There is a lot about Trump I don't like. But I don't see anybody in the rest of the R candidates that gets me excited. Same old same old. Mostly like the crowd on both sides of the aisle that gave us the latest Omnibus bill.
Furthermore, I don't agree at all with the assessment that Rubio is the best challenge to Hillary. She will have no problem keeping him on the defensive, and when that happens, he'll be toast.
We have to be realistic and understand the electorate we have, not the one we wish would think the same way we do. And like it or not, the current one wants to blow this shit up.
Okay, MaryD, my dear old Mom said I should do Ada Boni's Sicilian Almond Cookies - a favorite of mine for years - and she promised that I can make them without incident. ;)
I just read on Facebook that Moochelle is sitting next to an "empty chair" for the SOU address. I have no idea what her point is, but I find the symbolism about as close to hysterical as it gets.
After a long 2 hours of hunting down 3 not 1 or 2 but 3 beagles, who found a way out under the deer fence, Frederick and I are back in the house watching this Kansas City v. Houston football clown show.
Neither team deserves to win and neither deserves to lose. Its like two lost souls in Purgatory playing "You're It".
BTW, we have an invisible fence but it appears the collar's batteries are dead. A beagle is so smart they check from time to time to see if the collars still work. And when they don't they start their reconnanisance of weak spots in the fence. Today they won.
Furthermore, I don't agree at all with the assessment that Rubio is the best challenge to Hillary.
In RCP head-to-head matchups, Rubio has led since November, Trump has yet to lead. There's a five point differential, and the trend favors Rubio.
We have to be realistic and understand the electorate we have, not the one we wish would think the same way we do.
Bottom line is that most of the electorate does not appear to support the more activist core of the GOP. (I also think Trump support is misguided, but the contention he's got some secret crossover support flies in the face of all the available data.)
Notice that the article refers to Trump as "the controversial presidential candidate".
Is he more controversial than lawless, lying Hillary or socialist Bernie?
Liberal media bias shows through even on an article about Trump's Mass. headquarters being vandalized. They're pitiful.
I wouldn't be surprised if the RCP polls showed Romney ahead of Obama back in 2012.
No, actually he trailed almost the entire way. The hope was that the break (which typically goes 75-25 for the challenger) would put him over the top. Obviously it didn't happen.
The polls are early yet, but again, the argument that Trump has some secret reservoir of widespread (i.e., crossover) support ought to show up in the head-to-heads. It doesn't. In fact, there's a fairly significant negative factor amongst general election voters.
Heck, Beasts, you could probably buy a decommissioned Russian warship with the Powerball prize (probably somewhere around $305 million after taxes). Maybe even a missile sub! You'd be king of the yacht club for sure!
A sub would be too claustrophobic for me, James D. I'm thinking a nice Sea Ray L650 Fly would be very appropriate for my haunts. Nothing too ostentatious - just something nice for the Bikini Babes. I'm a giver...
After reading the Steyn article on his attendance in the Flynn in Burlington, I have to think there is something here with Trump that Cecil needs to recognize. And I am not a Trump fan but I remember during VN how the hard hats paraded and anti-protested the leftist protester. Seems he has the same kind of support.
Who cares if CT doesn't vote if the people who stayed home or didn't vote for Romney vote for Trump?
Seriously? That 5:39 is the first comment of yours I've ever read (AFAICR). Try rereading it, and tell me how you'd respond to the same thing coming from me. Or don't; makes no difference to me.
Thanks for the Esolen at 3:30. A great friend of mine in every day's Magnificat. One of my favorite go to writers when I need a little history and Catholic inspiration.
Nice. Notice in there anywhere where Trump is leading Hillary? Neither did I. Somehow the fact that a Democrat pollster is touting Trump's ad is less than convincing.
After reading the Steyn article on his attendance in the Flynn in Burlington, I have to think there is something here with Trump that Cecil needs to recognize.
He's got decent enthusiasm, but that's a relatively small part of the picture. Trump not only trails Hillary, he has yet to score an RCP average better than Hillary's worst. Of all the arguments for Trump (and I admit I find them all unpersuasive) electability is surely the worst.
Other than Trump issues you seem to have been busy with other things lately.
Yes, I've been much busier at work. (And it looks like it's going to get worse before it gets better.) And speaking of which, I need to do some of that stuff. Cheers.
As much as I appreciate Cecil's take on things, I believe Steyn has his finger closer to ther pulse of both America's mood and Trump's abilities.
Two of the most effective ways to manipulate people is to feign ignorance and take on that Aw Shucks persona that Reagan did. Thirty years on and the dimbulb left still hasn't caught on how such an amiable dunce ran rings around them, while the smart guy who coined the a.d. pejorative ended up indicted for bank fraud.
The other way is to hide your intelligence and skills by talking about how much of each you have. Guys who run circuses are despised by the smart set but the average Joe loves em.
Trump has been underestimated since the start as has the undercurrent of rage and frustration fueling him. The assumption either will fade looks less likely as time goes by as does his supposed unelectability.
It is hard for me and I guess CT to appreaciate that a blustering idiot like Trump with his populist and even racist, mysoginist mesage can be so accepted. But then we have sunk so low psychologically as a citizenship and nation, any message other than the kind Obama/Pelosi/Reid preach with their apologists and messangers at the media and on the BLM street, just means more and uplifting.
Unlike CT, I believe he will beat Hillary or whoever takes her place and that he will have coat-tails. We are tired and ready for resurrection.
JiB,
I will agree that he is a blowhard and acts like a buffoon at times and I doubt he is a genius as he claims but I consider Trump pretty intelligent. It takes an unconventional form but is just as legitimate as other candidates.
I have seen no evidence he is racist and none that he is misogynistic. He seems somewhat paternalistic but that is far different than hating women.
Wanted to quote these two gems from Steyn just for their perfection;
"A bossy girl of vaguely sapphic mien...."
and
"Or is it a billionaire with a supermodel wife dropping the pretense that he's no different from you stump-toothed losers in the rusting double-wides?"
Trump has been underestimated since the start as has the undercurrent of rage and frustration fueling him.
I think things like the Philly cop shooting and the Mayor's remarks highlight how pathetic our political class has become, and play into Trump's hands.
I also think he is a liberal. Now I'm pretty liberal on some social issue, but I admit it.
I think Trump is ill prepared for the job, and as we know, being a good campaigner does not mean you will be a good president. Trump is all about self-interest and I'm confident that is not the best thing for this country. Maybe that will change.
Wake up, sheeple!

But, I will also state that I am warming to Trump, very much. If he were to do nothing else but
1) Stop (or pause) immigration until we know wtf is going on...
2) Build the wall
3) reform the VA
4) Make America's military solid

I think, as Buckeye said a thread or so back, that the FU quotient is so high and widespread this cycle that the old attacks ("You killed my Mama with your asbestos and lack of health care" or "You used to like Hillary! and said different things in the past" just ain't gonna work this time on many voters from all camps.

Awesome, rse. What did you get to replace it?
Sandy, I liken it more to Reagan, 80. Carter fuxed the dems then and Obama is doing it now.
I've been querying folks around here and black, white, latino whatever they are not happy citizens. They know something is wrong and are not happy with the double talk and lies. All in for Trump for the most part, they are.
I'm still in the Cruz camp, but Trump is my second choice. If it ain't Cruz, elect Trump and burn it down.
Going Krogering and then to see Star Wars... bbl.

OK, but as I have noted here many times Hillary will never be president.
Either one of us is not a soothsayer or the logical paradox will cause the universe to wink out of existence come November.
Posted by: Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki | January 09, 2016 at 04:11 PM
Supposedly, Trump's current support is strongest in West Virginia, followed by NY. I don't know what to make of that, but wily NY libs conspiring to make Trump the R nominee seems unlikely.
Posted by: DebinNC | January 09, 2016 at 04:14 PM
. . . but wily NY libs conspiring to make Trump the R nominee seems unlikely.

Cecil
There is a lot about Trump I don't like. But I don't see anybody in the rest of the R candidates that gets me excited. Same old same old. Mostly like the crowd on both sides of the aisle that gave us the latest Omnibus bill.
Furthermore, I don't agree at all with the assessment that Rubio is the best challenge to Hillary. She will have no problem keeping him on the defensive, and when that happens, he'll be toast.
We have to be realistic and understand the electorate we have, not the one we wish would think the same way we do. And like it or not, the current one wants to blow this shit up.

Well if Rubio wins the nomination, and the RCP polls show him beating Shrillary the last week in October, I promise to take notice.
I wouldn't be surprised if the RCP polls showed Romney ahead of Obama back in 2012.

Stephanie linked this on FB - http://boston.cbslocal.com/2016/01/09/donald-trumps-massachusetts-headquarters-vandalized-vulgar-graffiti/?cid=facebook_WBZ_|_CBS_Boston

Posted by: Cecil Turner | January 09, 2016 at 05:42 PM
CT, Are you a conservative or a plant from the Dems?
If the latest litmus test for conservatism is rabid Trump support, I guess I'm a plant (hopefully not potted, though I'm tempted).

Iggy,
It is hard for me and I guess CT to appreaciate that a blustering idiot like Trump with his populist and even racist, mysoginist mesage can be so accepted.

I still think Hillary is going down.
