DrJ

being a good campaigner does not mean you will be a good president...

That's a problem with our current electoral system. I offer no alternatives.

I still think Hillary is going down.

Rumor has it that she already has. /*ducks*/

new lurker

Well, I so enjoy lurking on JOM and have come to realize that you all will certainly "put someone down" as TK and also JIB who left and then came back. BOE is a fav of mine--he tries to calm things down. As far as Jane's thinking that I am someone else, that is definitely not true. I have no idea whom she thinks I am or have been, but I am definitely a newlurker and nothing else.

new lurker

Who she thinks I am.

narciso

I asked toward the tail end of a willowed thread, how is your research going, dr. j.

I have my reservations about trump, notably because of what he did between 2006-2010, slobbering up to the democrats, slandering W re the Iraq theatre of operations,

DrJ

narc, the research is going really well. It is a challenge to fit new discoveries into the existing grant forms, but NIH is pretty good about that.

I can't go into many details, but a subcontractor who did not deliver is a problem. It probably will end up in court.

narciso

good to know, drop a link or two, into the queue, new lurker, to make a point,

Comments were at the bottom of the page Henry. 90+% negative and a big WGAS as most were lusting after Diana.

Sandy,
Thanks for posting the Hosner paintings. "Dreaming", girl in black one piece, has a striking resemblance to my youngest.

New lurker,
Stick around and enjoy the show. Things get snotty around here every so often, but then we kiss and make up or we don't. That's what families do.

OL, maybe we have to rethink the Powerball:Powerball
by Alex Tabarrok on January 9, 2016 at 4:00 am in Current Affairs, Economics | Permalink
Today’s Powerball lottery offers a prize of $800 million. Is the prize high enough to make it worth playing for an economist? In other words, is the prize high enough to be a net gain in expected value terms? Almost!

The odds of winning are 1 in 292.2 million. So the expected value of a ticket is $800*1/292.2=$2.73. A ticket only costs $2 so that’s a positive expected value purchase! We do have to make a few adjustments, however. The $800 million is paid out over 30 years while the $2 is paid out today. The instant payout is about $496 million so that makes the expected value 496*1/292.2=$1.70. We also have to adjust for the possibility that more than one person wins the prize. If you play variants of your birthday or “lucky” numbers that’s a strong possibility. If you let the computer choose your chances are better but with so many people playing it wouldn’t be surprising if two people had the same number–I give it at least 25%. So that knocks your winnings down to $372 million in expectation.

Finally the government will take at least 40% of your winnings, leaving you with $223 million in expectation. At a net $223 million the expected value of a $2 ticket is about 75 cents. Thus, a Powerball ticket doesn’t have positive net expected value but the net price of $1.25 is significantly less than the sticker price of $2. $1.25 is not much but to get your money’s worth buy early to extend the pleasure of anticipation.

lyle, nevah!

btw where is Eric in Boise? And Derwill? I miss the ID crowd. If JOM has a meet-up, I hope it's in ID, IN, TX, GA, or FL.

OK, anywhere except CA.

Jane

Marlene,

Check in and tell us you are okay.

(Tornado warning)

Jack is Back (but On Alert)!

We are in NYC on the 22nd through the 24th for the Army-Navy basketball game at MSG. Staying at Park Lane so Frederick can be close to the CP Ice Rink for his skating experience.

Always available for a meetup or cocktail or two or more.

Jane

No worries Clarice. I totally intend to win.

henry

Jane, how is the weather? My mom said to expect t-storms next weekend.

The Infamous Ignatz

--where is Eric in Boise?--

Is that a trick question?

lyle

I'd love to host a JOM conclave in ID, Frau! EiB dropped in yesterday or so with the droll although I must note his slacking off on his haiku. Publius checked in during the Ducks bowl game. I hereby offfer an open invitation to meet Derwil anytime she comes to BOI from McCall.

narciso

well that's exciting,

Clarice, the math minor in me always tries to explain the futility of lotteries to my wife.

Her simple response: "Somebody has to win."

Have never come up with a suitable comeback.

Jane

Henry,

Today was absolutely gorgeous. Woke up to 63 - warm enough for shorts, and then it was mid-70's all day.

Tons and tons of rain tonite, but it's over now.

Finally I get to see the benefits of Florda.

It looks like it's going to be 60's and 70's for the next week.

henry

Thanks Jane. My mom said to bring something warm in case it was rainy and in the high 50s. I reminded her it would be about -3 when I got on the plane, so warm clothes were in my plan.

Marlene

We're okay. The weather earlier today was great, hubby's cousin and his wife came over and we celebrated my birthday sitting outdoors at a restaurant at the beach. Later in the afternoon the rain started, but I was taking a two glasses of wine at lunch nap. : )

Marlene

oops!

Jack is Back (but On Alert)!

Got to 51F here today in the Hamptons. Mrs. JiB says its about 65F in Florida. This could be why I continue to see more and more Florida plates on cars here. Usually, like ours, they are gone by Christmas. Most by Halloween.

Stay safe. The World is wild with all kinds of cretins, idiots and fanatics.

narciso

well we got fog like the scottish moors, this morning, I'm exaggerating, but I was looking out for a certain hound,

caro

lyle, if you have an ID meetup I will come. Maybe marko will come, too. My mom was born in Idaho so I am kind of a native.

Jeff Dobbs

HEY HEY HEY!!!!!!!

We'll be back in our Idaho compound (no better term to describe it!) next summer.

An equidistant drive for everyone would be somewhere between Pocatello and Twin Falls? Or something.

COUNT ME IN!!!

Sun Valley it is, then!!

lyle

Where in ID, caro? Wifey is born in Pocatello.

Rick Ballard

What?

Why not Burley?

Jack is Back (but On Alert)!

Bill Cowher is the biggest homeboy on TV. What a jerk.

Jeff Dobbs

I was thinking Burley as well, Rick!!!!

Trying to find a pool hall, though.

The Infamous Ignatz

Highly recommend Hound of the Baskervilles with Basil and Bruce.

I thought Bob Beckel had died and gone to hell.

caro

Pocatello, lyle. Raised on Garfield.

GUS

Jane. The thought is disgusting.

On Huma???

"I still think Hillary is going down."

narciso

beckel was crass and stupid at times, but he had an occasional random bit of sense, at times, that can't be said of many of those who have replaced him in that seat,

GUS

Didn't Beckel bounce a check to a hooker?

Jeff Dobbs

Played pool at my bar tonight. On the table next to me was a big time Steeler fan. Shirt, jacket was full-on Steelers. Girlfriend (or wife?) was also wearing Steelers gear.

He was friendly. Is it weird that I think it worth noting that he was black? He was. I'm not particularly "outgoing" when I'm playing. I like to play by myself (not "with" for those with a dirty mind!).

Anyway, he eventually asked if I wanted to play a game. I always accept.

As soon as I did his girlfriend starts in on him, "you're gonna lose". And he'd fire back at her "what, you don't have my back?"

"I do, baby, but you can't beat him. Please don't bet any money."

I never, ever, ever bet money playing pool. I can't afford to risk losing. Maybe I'll bet a beer here and there . . . but if I'm winning, I don't want to win 10 beers. I couldn't drive home.

Anyway, I beat him five times in a row. And each time his girlfriend gave him the business. "I told you you couldn't beat him."

They're a cute couple. They're new to town from Pittsburgh. I'm hoping he joins the league. He'd be great.

I'm rooting for the Steelers just for him.

daddy

Good Morning, good evening, whatever.

Trump continues to win me over, and I continue to dislike him, simultaneously.

Jane,

Just starting catch-up, but from the posts I've read so far I think TM needs to go back and re-title this thread some variety of "How I Learned to Quit Hating the Wall Building Bigot and Love me the Comb-over!"

Here, you guys try it:

How I learned to Quit Hating ________ _______ and Love _______ _______!

henry

Another GAB victim speaks out.

At the time, I posited that perhaps the reporter was simply fishing, dishonestly probing for information. I owe Jason Stein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel an apology. He clearly had some info leaked to him. The facts were off, the leak was illegal, but he was just doing his job, tracking down leads.

lyle

So, Sun Valley it is! I love when a plan comes together!

Wow, caro. I'd bet there's a fair chance my inlaws know your mom. Or not. But all those years ago meant far, far fewer people in and around Pocatello.

caro

Right, lyle. I will look for the pic of my mom on graduation day at Pokey High. Her name was Stratford.

Eric in Boise

A meet up at the wayside Café in Burley would be a true Idaho experience for all concerned. Just Sayin'.

Jeff Dobbs

I would be sooooooo down for Sun Valley.

Jeff Dobbs

I would be sooooooooo down for a meet up at the wayside Cafe in Burley.

Jeff, only 211 miles to Burley!

Jeff Dobbs

Well, Man Tran needs to fly in.

DIJ and ride with me?

Or SUN . . . if we meet there....

The west is big. I'd hope Derwill could make it but Pocatello-ish would be a big drive for her.

I'd also really want cindyk to come. I mean, Montana is right next door. But that would be a big drive too.

I mean, at that point, we're talking about trying to convnince glasater to come, too.

PARTY!!!!!!!

narciso

very strangelove, daddy, so the fellow who was shot at a paris police station, may have been tunisian,
that was at least one of his four identities, he used to seek asylumm in germany,

lyle

I'm loving this thread.

daddy

Hi Caro! 15 days for the lap.

Plus I bumped into the Astronaut last night in Taipei and had the pleasure of chatting to him about the new movie/book, The Martian. I haven't seen the movie but am about half way thru the very enjoyable book. He hadn't read the book, but had seen the movie during some deadhead United flight, so that was fun picking his brain about bits and pieces of it. His first comment was something about the particulars of the composition of the Martian soil, so that was a good fun starting point for giggles and jabbering and Hollywood.

narciso

I read the book, re recommendations from the Horde, I'm afraid that Matt Daamon ruined it, I liked his turn in Interstellar though, when he didn't make it back,

Jeff Dobbs

Hey daddy, I didn't get a chance to take a pic because I was driving . . . but saw the license plate today here in Greensboro....

GO2HLUNC

I mean, I'm all for promoting your team or your whatever in a vanity plate (mrs hit and run promotes the state of Texas in her plate), but I don't get bashing someone, something or some institution in a vanity plate.

But there it was.

Go to Hell UNC.

Heh.

daddy

How I Learned To Quit Hating the Trump I don't like and Start Loving the electorate we have, not the one we wish we had!

Stephanie

Back from Star Wars and meh. Seemed kinda flat. JJ used to write really good ST books in the 80s back when he was just a struggling writer, but now seems to have lost his way. Writers don't seem to make good directors. The character's emotion is apparently all in their head, and they can't translate it to the actors to get it to the screen. At least that is my impression. Oh well.

Bummed.

Frau Duden

Hey, daddy! I'm glad you kept with The Martian. It takes a while, but I found the book to be very exciting. I had to stop once in a while when it was too tense (ok, wimp here). I don't know if I would want to watch the film even though I've been told it is good.

narciso

you mean lawrence kasdan or alan dean foster?

Dave (in MA)

http://www.fark.com/comments/8991595/El-Chapo-interviewed-by-Sean-Penn-And-here-some-of-you-were-worried-hed-escape-punishment#new Never thought it would have taken a whole half hour before some O-bot's feelings got hurt.

Wow.

Jeff Dobbs

Cincy up by 1 with 1:50 to go.

Rothlesbirger is out.

But all Pittsburgh needs is a field goal to win.

narciso

well the pic of Kate del Castillo, might be worth linking, I think she's gotten too much into character twice, once for the Queen of the South, that ties the Mexican cartel to enterprises in Europe all the way, to the Bratva, and another covering the Miami angle in the 70s and 80s,

Dave (in MA)

Pretty f-ing stupid to run into your own EZ.

narciso

maybe they should have one of those heads up displays,

Jeff Dobbs

Oh, Cincy fumble?

We gots a game.

Rothlewhatshisname coming back in??????

narciso

so spicoli, captain tupolev'd his subject, let this be so,
