Jack is Back (but On Alert)!

Back to the bridge and wondering if the Ontario Hydro engineers will be down to Nipigon with their collection of Bailey Bridges as a temporary fix. Don't know their capacity but the original Bailey was desiged to accommodate Sherman tanks at 35 tons. I believe where they are used now they are in increasing capacity up to 70 tons.

NK, they had one or still do? at Lime Rock race circuit:)

It doesn't take much digging to conclude that GOPe is desperate to get Rubio the nomination, so we will hear much from DC about 'natural born' and bankrupt casinos/shuttle airlines all the way through Super Tuesday. This is one reason I wanted Cruz to be more a team player in the Senate.

Jim Smith

So a car has to be licensed, registered, insured and inspected to be driven. Good news for everyone in CA. All the illegals driving with no insurance, drivers license, registration nor inspection will immediately stop once informed of the laws.

cheerleader

If a Kenyan birth certificate had been found for Obama, and his colleagues, governors, senators and ivy professors had questioned his natural born status, Cruz could have argued for Obama that his eligibility was settled law.

NK

Lime Rock-- I was going to say that if there is a bailey bridge the last time I was there it suspiciously looked like concrete, but I guess that is just pretty wrapping: http://bridgehunter.com/ct/litchfield/bh53463/

lyle

Driscoll at Insty links to a "true conservative' who really, really wanted to vote for Zero in '08:

For the nearly eight years that have followed, I’ve tried very hard to remember that feeling. To not be that kind of conservative. You know the kind I mean—one who reflexively hates everything Obama says or does simply because he says it or does it, or who truly believes the president is a closet Muslim who gleefully sets American flags on fire when he sneaks back to his “real” home in Kenya or Tatooine or wherever.

But now I’ve come to the sobering conclusion that I’ve long since lost that feeling—about the country, and about him. Washington is very much the same, if not worse, at the close of these long, bitter, brutal years. That’s not all Obama’s fault, to be sure. Maybe mostly not his fault. But it is in part. And it isn’t what he promised to people like me.

Then for the ultimate palate cleanser:

Or as Mark Steyn wrote in March of 2009, when the scales began to fall from the rubes at the Economist, “This is the point: The nuancey boys were wrong on Obama, and the knuckledragging morons were right. There is no post-partisan centrist ‘grappling’ with the economy, only a transformative radical willing to make Americans poorer in the cause of massive government expansion. At some point, The Economist, Messrs Brooks, Buckley & Co are going to have to acknowledge this. If they’re planning on spending the rest of his term tutting that his management style is obstructing the effective implementation of his centrist agenda, it’s going to be a long four years.”

I suppose this is old hash and not worth revisiting but as much as I despise McCain, even he would have been a better prez than Precious. The Dems will, of course, never admit how much worse the country and the world have gotten in Zero's reign, but the GD GOPe owes the base a yuge apology for the previous two candidates. Not that I will ever expect to receive one...

Paladino was kind of Trump to the nth power, though probably genuinely conservative but without Trump's name recognition or reservoir of good will, so he alienated a lot of people. He stunned the forgettable R presumed nominee in the primary as a tea party candidate, but got hammered by Cuomo in the general. I think the Rs could do better, though this the NYS version of R, so who knows.

jimmyk

Regarding driverless cars, I presume the explanation must be government grants, same as with green tech. Also, there was a story (no time to dig it up now) that they were actually causing accidents by being too law-abiding, i.e. driving too slowly, etc. Total boondoggle.

I can see a demand for smart cars that override drivers who seem to be screwing up, or that provide warnings, but I doubt anyone wants to put himself in the hands of a robot driver.

henry

jimmyl, the giveaway on the robot cars is an article in the last week or so which said with driverless cars, nobody needed to own a car anymore. Standard lefty wet dream.

lyle @ 1:59

I read that piece this morning, and it made me want to break something.

The only thing I want to hear from the author of that piece, and all his ilk, is an apology.

We knew exactly who and what Obama was from the beginning. It was all there, right in the open, for anone willing to look honestly at him and his history and the people he surrounded himself with and his own statements.

A man who began his political career in the living room of Bill Ayers was never going to reach out to his political opponents.

A man who talked about "bitter clingers" was never going to make the slightest effort to understand or address the concerns of anyone who didn't think exactly like him.

A man who sat in Jeremiah Wright's church for 20 years, and whose allies and advisors included racists like Van Jones and Eric Holder was never going to improve race relations.

A man who bragged that he would raise capital gains taxes even if he knew it would generate less revenue; who bragged of his vote against the Iraq surge even after it worked; who bragged of the price of electricity "skyrocketing" was never going to do anything but push his hard-left agenda regardless of the wishes of the American people or the damage it would do.

A man who admitted that, into his 30's, he did not know how auto insurance worked was never going to be a competent leader or administrator of the government.

Anyone who still thought, in spite of all that, that Obama would be a healer, a reconciler, a leader of the whole country, or anything other than a complete disaster, was at best willfully blind.

lyle

Amen, James. Amen, brother.

Apparently there is an Arab word for mass sexual abuse, and it's floating around on Twitter, as well as the police using the term.

NK

henry and Rick B could tell you all better than I how big a deal this is if the SCOTUS goes the right way on this. Apart from their Media Teammates, nationally, the biggest advantage the Dems have is Taxpayer funded teammates in the form of municipal/county/state gov't employee UNIONs. Those gov't unions fund Dems, propagandize for Dems (THE CHILDREN!) and GOTV for Dems. I assume that if nationally dues cannot be compelled, then nationally gov't unions will shrivel up as in Wisc. OH BOY, THAT WOULD be great! : http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2016/01/11/supreme-court-to-hear-dispute-over-public-sector-union-fees.html?intcmp=trending

henry

Yes NK, a national right to work founbd in a penumbra or emanation of the Constitution would be very interesting.

NK

MISSM-- OF COURSE THERE IS AN ARABIC phrase for mass sexual harassment, Allah Wills... no... commands it.

NK

I think this is a narrower NLRA issue for gov't employees, but I am not an expert. That said, the position the Peoples Republic of Calif took in the case is an absolute outrage, beyond outrageous. The State NEEDS unions? Civil Service laws don't exist in Calif?

henry

NK, I read that before I posted. The issue of containing the ruling to government unions was discussed in the argument. It seems all know that it is a logical result of freeing government workers from forced union membership / payments.

NK

JiB-- I work in NYC real estate every day, and there are parts of Lower Manhattan/Bklyn I don't recognize from 20 years ago, much less my yute. The Rudy G/Bloomie revolution (low crime-quality of life) has been extraordinary. and when Mayor Bane starting screwing up homeless vagrants under foot and stop and frisk, he backed off quickly. Even his voters don't stand for that crap, even though the commie advocates say they do.

jimmyk

with driverless cars, nobody needed to own a car anymore.

Not sure why driverless implies ownerless, but I guess that's lefty logic: If what you really want is Y, but can only get X, then X=>Y. Or something like that.

Or maybe the idea is that no one would want to own a driverless car (fair enough), so therefore if all cars were driverless, they would be ownerless. Of course the premise is vacuous unless forced by the government.

NK

If Roberts/Kennedy get this right, politically it will be a much bigger deal than ObummerCare.

NK

jimmyk- the 'sharing' economy is just another step to collectivization and the end of property rights. Driverless cars are Citibikes with horsepower.

The Mexican gvt is saying Sean Penn was instrumental in catching el Chapo. Wonder if he will have him killed.

Jack is Back (but On Alert)!

When our R&D guys were looking at "driverless cars" back in the 90's they came up with two cost scenarios:

1. You invest in the infrastructure (i.e. electronics, navigation, safety) all built into the roads and streets, or

2. You put the investment in the cars and no infrastructure upgrades needed.

IOW's who is going to pay for this. They quickly drew the conclusion that the car owner is going to pay because the "state" is never going to make those kind of investments without a return (tax revenue) and with their bureaucracy it would take years if not centuries.

So, now the driverless car will come that way from the factory and you the customer will be paying for it. I like that since I can opt not to go driverless. If the "state" did all the technology on their side of the road I would be paying for a system I don't want or need to use.

However, some day I see major E-W, N-S interstates with major automated sections that will allow driverless traffic in designated lanes. I don't think the NJ Turnpike will be one of those:)

Beasts of England

Interesting to see the 'possible' conflict of interest issue being raised for the Clinton Foundation. I thought it would be an issue in the general election, but not before then. Hmm.

Thomas Collins

JiB, did your R&D critters think about whether a driverless vehicle could be programmed to act crazy in Boston traffic? A vehicle that followed traffic rules in Boston, driverless of driverful, would be more dangerous than a nut at (or not at) the wheel. I am sure this must be the case in many places.

Thomas Collins

For example, a driverless vehicle in Boston that didn't speed up, but slowed down when the caution light appeared would be a hazard.

Beasts of England

I shod say that I thought it would be the issue of the general. Remember the good old days when the appearance of a conflict of interest would set of the alarm bells?

NK

Wait until we have the first Muslim SC Justice, NK.

Speaking of which:

http://sultanknish.blogspot.com/2016/01/the-tribal-war-with-islam.html

To the left, Islam is an inefficient sort of Socialism dependent on medieval superstition and lacking modern idea. To Muslims, the left is an inefficient sort of Islam that's missing Allah, Mohammed and the Koran. It's all just a problem of explanations and textbooks.

The left plans to defeat ISIS with "our values" by which it means showing how effective our social harmony is, which it isn't, by refusing to actually fight Islamic terrorism. Eventually the Jihadists will give up their reactionary ways as the ordinary Muslims realizes that he has the same interests as the rest of the great rainbow coalition does. This hasn't even worked too well in Europe.

[snip]

Our enemies are not states and they will not fight us as states. To the extent that they are tribal, they will fight us as tribes. To the extent that they are religious, in a primitive sort of way, they will attack us that way. But the real problem is that we are no longer states either. Instead we are in the grip of a mystical deluded cult that squawks of "Our values" while tribalizing and dividing us to push through discredited economic and social policies. They have opened the gates to a cruel, backward enemy.

And in doing so, they have brought a tribal war into our own homelands.

I stopped reading at this paragraph, OL:

Gun violence is an epidemic that kills 33,000 men, women, boys and girls every year. On top of those needless deaths, law enforcement agencies in America kill more people in a month than many other countries' police forces kill in years. When those precious lives are taken, it forever tears apart the lives of thousands more -- the friends and families who loved them, and who always will.

A blizzard of mendacity.

But the real gravamen of my third point revolves around Ted Cruz, not Hillary Clinton. I suspect that an unstated but large consideration in the sudden shift towards Donald Trump on the part of the Republican Establishment is that its members are terrified of Ted Cruz.

They are right to be terrified of him, for were he to become president, the gravy train that is business-as-usual in Washington would make an abrupt stop, everyone off, please, and it would be as much of a shake-up for Republicans as Democrats.
