Beasts of England

I think DublinDave is legit, but now that he said lyle is his fave, I can't spend too much time defending him. ;)

lyle

Here's some more:

lyle

That's cold, BoE. :0

lyle @ 1:58

Why are they confirming any Obama appointees? Vote them all down. Give him no one. Let the posts stay vacant until 2017.

Threadkiller

So you aware what the Anti-Cruz Dems are saying, NK.

Thomas Collins

I'll bet you'd take DublinDaveIsThereBeerIn Hell? back if he drank a toast to Alabama's win, BoE. :-))

JMHanes

So what's Plan B, if, say, a bunch of state legislatures have flipped back to the Democrats by the time a convention actually convenes? With so many people saying FU & Your Party Too, these days, who knows which way the constitutional wind will actually be blowing? It's not like anybody predicted the rise of Donald Trump. Contra the years of arguments here that Republicans could have been winning the White House, if the GOPe had just been willing to bless a bona fide conservative, it's beginning to look like a true conservative is not actually the answer people have been looking for, no?

Propose your constitutional amendments, and then let the states ratify them or not. Don't convene a national conclave of professional politicians to discuss making improvements. Does anybody actually believe the Californians' agenda would look anything like Greg Abbott's? We're not talking founding fathers redux here.

lyle

Good question, James. But they're not suicidal...

This is a very good primer and a fleshing out of some of the comments from the east coast JOMer's, i.e., the NY contingent, about Trump:

BTW, how's your head today, Beasts? Congrats to The Tide. Helluva game.

Jack is Back!

DuDa sounds like he is with Mary Hanafin of Dun "Lorry" Laoghire. She's the only FF lady worth a peek.

And I really have a hard time thinking Enda Kenny would appreciate such a fool as DuDa hanging around FF.

By the way, for a little irony, Fianna Faíl is known as The Republican Party in Ireland.

Miss Marple

JMHanes,

I go back and forth on that Article V thing. Levin makes it sound very reasonable, but then I look at our goofball state legislature (Republican, by the way) and wonder if they have the intellect to handle it, and the strength of character to withstand the temptations to do too much monkey business.

You make a good point for the opposite case, as we don't know that we would have a bunch of GOP legislatures by the time the ball got rolling. In fact, I imagine the prospect of changing the Constitution to suit them would galvanize the dems in a huge effort to take over the legislatures.

I also have come to think that an Article V convention would not be something covered by the media with any sort of dignity, but rather portrayed as a sports event at best, with lots of snarking and misinterpretation of what people said.

In fact, I can think of no bigger target for the dems than portraying it as an effort at revolution and calling in troops to put down said rebellion.

We have enough unforeseen events popping up. I am loathe to add one to the mix.

cheerleader

Thank you Thomas Collins. I liked your answer.

I hope you don't mind me adding this on, as a Trump cheerleader. :-) I haven't heard Trump say outright that Cruz is ineligible, (maybe he has said it), but when he was asked about it in an interview, he said that the issue was going to cause some problems for Cruz. To which Cruz, who says that the issue is settled, responded by posting a video of the Fonz jumping the shark. Then all of a sudden Tribe, (one of Cruz's law profs), McCain, Rand Paul, the Governor of Iowa and others popped out of the woodwork saying it is a problem for Cruz, not settled. The question that you've settled for me is that "waters filled with sharks and poisonous fish" likely means that Cruz won't be sending any more Fonz jumping the shark videos to deal with the problem.

NK

Cruz answered the question today directly and substantively in Wash Examiner. Cruz is smart enough not to go Snarko - a - Snarko against that old con man Le Donald. No more cutsey videos in response to Born in the USA music. BTW, when doe Bruce S send a demand letter to Trump to cease and desist?

The Infamous Ignatz

While I'm not overjoyed at being called a racist or a putz that's not why I stopped commenting.

I stopped because ever since I was a stripling in short pants I have taken the side of the one against the many.
The one is usually an oddball and very often a really irritating oddball. But left alone he is usually no more than a slight irritant and sometimes, if you make the effort to get past the PITA angle, even a not so bad person.
But, short of being an ax murderer or pedophile, the ostracization and stigmatization of the one by the group I find more offensive than the one's provocations, especially when the turmoil caused mostly by the people who respond to his provocations is laid solely at his doorstep as though he left those who respond no other possible choice.

It's especially easy to ignore the provocations on the internet because he's not tugging at your shirt sleeve asking a hundred questions like Sniffles the Mouse. All you have to do is SOB. When the whole thread becomes SOB material because Deputy Dawg decides to run Vincent Van Gopher out of town, it's not so easy. Pardon my mixed rodentia metaphors.

Alone it's a minor irritation. It is when people respond in high dudgeon that the place becomes an unusable approximation of high school cliques and infantile name calling.
Who the hell appointed anyone here troll cop and why would one ever be appointed when they make things exponentially worse?

It's comically ludicrous that it occurs even now, when half the pundocracy and half the people here are suddenly debating TK's hobby horse, re Cruz, as a serious issue that people can disagree on.

The bottom line is it takes two to tango, which means if you decide to dance you're either the slutty creep Maria Schneider or the fat tub of crazy-ass lard Brando.
I prefer putz to either of those choices.

NK

trolling is rude and counterproductive, nothing wrong with calling that out.

James D

Contra the years of arguments here that Republicans could have been winning the White House, if the GOPe had just been willing to bless a bona fide conservative, it's beginning to look like a true conservative is not actually the answer people have been looking for, no?

I think the answer a lot of people have been looking for is simply someone who will FIGHT BACK.

Look at 2008. The only time the McCain campaign showed any life was for the first couple of days after Palin was chosen as VP, before Dems and MSM (but I repeat myself) got themselves coordinated and began their attacks on her.

Look at 2012. The high water mark of Romney's campaign was the first debate, when he went after Obama hard. As soon as he backed off from that, his polls followed.

If Romeny had gone into that second debate, and instead of letting himself get caught on technicalities of exactly when Obama used the word "terrorism", he'd opened with something like:

"Mr. President, do you seriously expect the American people to believe that these well-planned attacks by thousands of fighters, were all because of an amateur YouTube video that a dozen people in the whole world saw before you and your Secretary of State started blaming it? Really? That's pathetic, and it's insulting to the American people. If you had a conscience or any dignity, you'd apologize to all of us, right now."

...and if he kept that up for two hours, he might be President right now. But he didn't, and he's not.

Captain Hate on the iPad

In fact, I can think of no bigger target for the dems than portraying it as an effort at revolution and calling in troops to put down said rebellion.

Nothing would illustrate what a post Constitutional environment we exist in than that.

Miss Marple

Well, to my mind we all know TK's obsession. So what is so hard about scrolling by?

When everyone starts in on the finer points of SEC football, that's what I do, since I have no interest in it.

I just do not like a lot of pointless arguing. And I especially don't like it when others are caught in the crossfire.

Dave (in MA)

Lard, I thought it was butter.

Miss Marple

Captain Hate,

Yes, but I don't care to illustrate it with such extreme measures.

I also am not much of a gambler, so that has to be taken into account when I give my opinion.

1. Who would you want to represent you? I can’t think of anyone who stands out.

2. Why don’t some bright lights create rewritten versions in advance for people to dissect and suggest better clauses.

The idea of going in with nothing but Hope and Change is not going to earn my support.

DuDa,
Watch that the FF Vampires don't roll you.

Art V Convention? NFW, not with the lying, cheating Statist, anti-constitutionalist Left on the other side.

NK

DD's pockets are empty, so no risk of that.

Started reading your 2:20. When you posted "our goofball state legislature" I knew it was you talking about Indiana. Too funny.

NK,
I forgot to consider that point.

I'm with Clarice re Rubio.

After Rubio's Gang of Eight misadventures, then his support for toppling Mubarak *and* Qaddafi, I just don't agree that he is our best bet for a strong foreign policy.

The latest word re his support for some leftist, anti-male "War on Women" legislation is just the last straw for me.

If he is our nominee, I'll vote for him, or "IVR" as JMHanes says, but I won't hold my breath waiting for him to resist the entreaties of 'My Friends' to reach across the aisle once again.

Thanks, Iggy, for your 2:25 post. I hadn't kept up with all of the comment pages, and I saw a remark about "your leaving", so I went back and tried to find out what was wrong. Never did see what happened, but I did see quite a few posts attacking TK, using ugly, ugly language, i.e., shit, etc., (yes, I curse too, but suddenly jom reminded me of the vile left-wing blogs), and I thought, 'am I going to have to quit lurking, commenting...maybe once a month, lose this unique place of wit and intelligence?' More reminders of how unpopular the American Revolution was.

The Constitution was post revolution.

The Philly Constitutional Convention was hammered out in secret. That ain’t gonna happen today. There is no trust. There is no honorable press. Hell, it wasn’t honorable in the 1780s.

I think there is less wrong with the Constitution than Ezra Klein and the new revolutionaries think.

What governs us is not the document so much as the principles the founders believed and tried to weave into it. Most people today could not point to a principle and explain why it should be so.

Hell, most people cannot explain what makes something a principle.

So if somebody is a straw purchaser — and what that means is they don’t intend the guns for themselves, they intend to resell them to somebody else — they go to a gun show in Indiana, where right now they don’t have to do a background check, load up a van, and open up that van and sell them to kids in gangs in Chicago — if now that person has to go through a background check, they’ve got to register, ATF has the capacity then to find out if and when a gun is used in a crime in Chicago where that gun had come from. And now you know here’s somebody who seems to be willing to sell a gun to a 15-year-old who had a known record.

404 outs Miss Marple's "business." :)

On a much, much less ridiculous note, who on this earth possibly believes this carp? "Kids in gangs" in Chicago buying guns out of the back of a van loaded up with guns bought in Indiana?

Not that claim to be perfect in this regard.

Miss Marple

lyle,

You have to have a background check in Indiana to get a permit, and you can't get a gun without a permit.

Even when estates have guns at auction, you buy the gun through the auctioneer but it is sent to the gun store on the next block, and you cannot pick it up until you show receipt for payment and your permit. If you don't have a permit, they will do one on the spot and you can't have it until it's passed.

The auctioneer tells everyone at the auction that if they think they can't pass a background check, don't bid, because you will not get your money back.

404's lying, big surprise. Of course people in other states might not know our laws, in fact probably don't, so that's why he feels he can say stuff like that.

If Jeb had been a Democrat, he might have been president. He can console himself with that. But he also can contribute to stopping Hillary -- and that's far more important. He should pull out before the voting begins.

I doubt he even wants to stop Hilligula at this point. Cruz, for sure. Despicable She? Nah.

cheerleader

James D, you are so right. When the media freaked out because Romney spoke about Benghazi before Obama did, Romney should have gone out and said MORE and LOUDER, instead of clamming up. His supporters would have loved him for it.

Gentlejim

It's not Indiana's laws versus another state's laws. You purchase a firearm at a store or gun show you fill out form 4473 first. That is Federal form 4473. 404 knows it as do his speech writers and all the idiots on the antigun left. I see that Bob Owens and others are dealing with those antigun idiots today saying they can't wait to come get our guns. They actually think they will walk into my house unannounced and unarmed and leave in any fashion other than in a body bag. Fools all.

Miss Marple

Gentlejim,

Well, maybe John Gregg will go out and TALK to people, rather than hiding in the Statehouse with his cronies.

Heck, I might even vote for him. At least he's not a pompous ass. (He worked at the coal company where I was a geologist back in the 70's. He was a land lawyer.)

Janet

Another good link, Texas Liberty Gal - http://blogs.ancientfaith.com/joeljmiller/consciousness-of-the-bible/?utm_content=buffer12c0d&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

a bit - "A couple of years ago the New York Times famously described Easter—the central holiday of the Christian year—as marking Jesus’ “resurrection into heaven.” The Times issued a correction, but the fact it got by in the first place is telling.

Ditto its correction of a column by David Brooks just two months later:

An earlier version of this column incorrectly identified the biblical texts in which three figures—Saul, David and Esther—appear. Their stories are told in other books of the Jewish Bible, but not in the Torah. The column also incorrectly described a passage from I Corinthians that ends with the statement, “God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.” It was written by Paul, not spoken by Jesus.

It’s actually worse than the correction lets on. Not only was Paul’s line misattributed to Jesus, but the column also failed to identify in which of the two Corinthian letters Jesus wasn’t speaking—while simultaneously changing the audience for the misattributed line: “In Corinthians,” the column originally said, “Jesus tells the crowds. . . .” No, manifestly, he did not.

And the punchline? Brooks flubbed the Bible while addressing the ebb of religion in society."

The MFM are stupid about Christianity & they are stupid about Islam. THey don't seem to make any effort to understand the topic they are writing about.

lyle

So no one has to read Brooksie, I'll give you this little gem re Cruz:

Some of these positions I agree with, but the lack of any positive emphasis, any hint of reform conservatism, any aid for the working class, or even any humane gesture toward cooperation is striking.

This mofo should be struck dead by a thunderbolt from Gaia for that bolded bit.

clarice

As Matt walsh says where was Brooks confirmed?

And from one of Instapundit's crew--a very excellent discussion on the present birther nonsense http://pjmedia.com/instapundit/

Miss Marple

Janet,

The problem is that they don't believe in anything except government and politics. So when they are confronted with people who believe, it just doesn't compute.

So when the Muslims actually act on their beliefs, this confounds them, because they think everyone is as dismissive of religion as they are.

DebinNC

“In Corinthians,” the column originally said, “Jesus tells the crowds. . . .” No, manifestly, he did not.

Miss Marple

lyle,

Well, I will probably bite the bullet and vote for Pence. Can't say the same for other Hoosiers.

Indiana workers were unionized by executive order by Evan Bayh. This was reversed by Mitch Daniels (best governor ever). It has continued under Pence.

So, if Gregg wins, he will probably do an EO just like Bayh did, and he will get away with it due to precedent.

In almost every neighborhood around here there is a "Pence must go!" sign. I pass them every day. I think the unions are behind them.

Pence has managed to alienate both the gay/lefties AND the Christian conservatives by his ham-handed dealings with that whole religious freedom bill, which was NOT necessary and then was made even more controversial by his crony, some religious group leader, being at the signing and then going on his web site to brag about how they had "stopped the gays."

The whole thing was an exercise in pathetic politics.

Then in order to stop the controversy, Brian Bosma in the legislature led a movement and passed a bill which made LGBT a PROTECTED GROUP, because the businesses were howling about gay rights. So the Christian family groups felt like they were betrayed, too.

Worst politics I have ever seen. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot!

Jack is Back (but On Alert)!

jane,

Sailors. Iran has promised to release them "shortly". Iran has also agreed to dismantle their nukes and provide their own inspections to prove it.

Knowing Obama is the second coming of Jimmah, I would not be surprised at all that the Ayatollah, like Rahm, will not let a crisis go to waste.

MissM-- keep the boats 'promptly return the crew'? That is both an act of piracy and war against the USA. Hello, the Mullahs have committed an act of war. The ChiComs pulled this with GWB in 2001 with Cheney's help GWB passed the test. No shooting war, but aircraft and 7th fleet continued patrols. ChiComs learned GWB was a legit Cinc. After 7 years Mullahs know they can roll Obummer, endlessly.

NK you're going to have to take a pill when the old man is the POTUS.
