The debate vivisection occurs on Twitter, and here in the comments. My horserace call: Kasich, Bush and Christie had their best nights yet. Hard to see all three surviving Tuesday's vote, however. And very late in game, juxtaposed against a strong answer on abortion by Rubio, Jeb explained that his pro-life with rape, incest, medical exemptions was "in the sweet spot" politically. The suggestion of political calculation in his beliefs was ghastly.
Rubio had his worst night at a terrible time, but also had some positive moments. One Twitter wag did offer something like "I believe any of these candidates could do anything they say except Rubio, who couldn't buy liquor without showing an ID".
Cruz explained that he would engage in targeted carpet bombing. Please - ISIS is headquartered in Raqqa, population over 200,000 (well, pre-refugees - who knows now?) and he is going to go Dresden on 20,000 ISIS fighters alongside 200,000 civilian hostages? Sometimes talking tough makes a person look like a punk.
That said, Cruz had a touching moment describing the death of his older half-sister due to a drug overdose. His segue to the need for border security and a tougher war on drugs was awkward but Cruz in human mode was quite compelling, actually - more of this and Dems will tremble.
Carson was fine but so what? And Trump provided his usual mix of bluster and bloviation. At one point, after he obnoxiously told Jeb to shush and put his fingers over his lips, the crowd booed; Trump basically booed them back. Does any of this cost him support? Probably not, and as the front-runner he doesn't need to gain support, just avoid losing it.
So, if votes shifted they drifted away from Rubio towards the three Establishment alternatives. I think Christie is gone Wednesday morning.
SUNDAY MORNING QUARTERBACKING: The debate ended with a lightning round where each candidate had to pick a Super Bowl winner. No one was quick enough on their feet to come up with these answers:
Bush, who said Peyton was backing him so he was backing Denver, should have said "I believe in steady veteran leadership with a strong defense, so I pick Denver".
Rubio said that if Peyton was backing Bush then Rubio would have to pick the Panthers. No conviction! He should have said he favors youth, energy and a strong defense - go Cam, go Carolina!
Carson, who clearly did not care, said that with 100% confidence he could pick the winner - either Denver or Carolina. If he is not a football fan he should have said that as a neurosurgeon he is rooting for the NFL to get ahead of their concussion crisis and praying no one gets hurt. Nail down the concerned parent vote.
IIRC most of the remainder pandered shamelessly by saying that since their next primary stop is South Carolina they are backing Carolina. Per Twitter, they at least picked the right pony. None seized the "strong defense" line.
Since no one asked, I am a youth, energy, strong defense and big running game guy. I would love to see Peyton go out on top but he is more likely to go out on a golf cart - I don't see Denver winning this thing.
Good Morning!

...Christie...
Posted by: Threadkiller | February 07, 2016 at 11:19 AM
Since everybody seems to love the mailman's son in NH maybe he should stay there, since he'll need to find a new job in two years anyway. I'm sure that would be fine with Ann and Buckeye, with only maryrose wanting him back; that right there is the state attitude in a microcosm.
Posted by: Captain Hate | February 07, 2016 at 11:21 AM
Jebster is at 10 percent at UMass Lowell tracking. Jebster's performance will be the surprise of Tuesday. Of Christie, Kasich and Jebster, Jebster will be the one hanging on by the skin of his upper crust teeth.
Posted by: Thomas Collins | February 07, 2016 at 11:25 AM
A quick Super Bowl™ question: is Denver's defense truly exceptional or was the Patriot's offensive line just marginal? I'm trying to remember the comments made about same during the playoff game.
I'm asking because I'm hearing some irrational exhuberance from the Panther Nation regarding a blowout by the Camsters. I may want to capitalize on that at the party later...
Posted by: Beasts of England | February 07, 2016 at 11:27 AM
Huh, I hadn't realized that Huntsman got 17% in NH four years ago. I would have guessed something closer to 9-10.
Interestingly, two days before the NH primary, Huntsman was polling at 9. I'm sad that I don't remember all the Huntsmentum Mania.
Kasich is obviously vying for the same voters - and is polling a little ahead of where Huntsman was...but I don't think he'll get to 17%.

BOE, Pats were 3-5 in their last 8 games, and much of the issue was their offensive line. Broncs D is not at '85 Bears level, but it us quite good enough to make those who took the apanthers -6 micturating their Bud Light throughout the game.
Posted by: Thomas Collins | February 07, 2016 at 11:30 AM
"Vivisection"? I deplore the eliminationist rhetoric.
But I'll have to join you on the virtual Carolina sideline. Normally on these things you bet on the defense . . . but I think there's a more significant overall gap than the O/D divide. It's also funny how little respect the Panthers get, even after a 15-1 season.
Posted by: Cecil Turner | February 07, 2016 at 11:31 AM
I've observed more lack of respect for the Broncos and for Manning becoming an efficient 2001 season Tom Brady type QB.

As I've said before Rubio is at best number two maybe three with me.
Having said that and recognizing the awkward and kind of embarrassing way he kept returning to his canned theme I found Christie repeatedly returning to the fact that he manages a fleet of snow plows just as canned and just as embarrassing.
The idea a governor is held accountable while a Senator isn't seems slightly odd to me. They're both given a job by their constituents and fired at the next election if they don't do it satisfactorily. It is not the accountability that is different but the job description. had he made that argument he would have had a point.
However in his awkward and stilted way Rubio was making an important point that explains why Christie should be unacceptable to a conservative. When he says Barry's destruction is unintentional he is making the point that ideas matter. Christie's ideas stink because they're the same mushy middle of the road pabulum that has allowed the left to advance.
Rubio unfortunately seems to have a less than rigid spine so he is less than trustworthy policy wise but at least he recognizes that Barry isn't a good guy whose incompetence has been the problem and at least he starts out with pretty conservative principles in most areas unlike Christie.
Christie is a better debater. I'm not looking to hire a debater. I'm looking for the guy who has the right ideas and the spine to stick to them. Anyone else is just placeholding til the next and worse Obama comes along.

Carson and Trump's continuing whine about Cruz pulling the 'unfair trick' in Iowa is making Carson look whiny and weak.
This tactic may hurt Cruz ( I think it does ding him a bit) but it makes Carson look like a child crying over unfair treatment. Nobody likes child-like, wimpy behavior in a Prez candidate.
Cruz gets slight damage, Carson looks weak. Meanwhile, Trump stirs the pot like the slippery politician that he is, and doesn't get hurt.

Disappointing that he repeated his talking point like one of those old dolls with the cord that you pull out.

TK,
Rubio was making the exact point you have made time and again about Barry, a correct point I might add, and all you seem to care about is his delivery.
Christie seems to think;
1. If he makes the welfare state trains run on time he's done his job and,
2. Government is the manner in which society solves problems rather than a necessary evil which more often than not creates the problems it's allegedly trying to solve.

Cruz offered his support for Carly both in an interview and in a tweet calling for her to be included. As far as I can tell (I didn't look exhaustively) Carson was the only other candidate to call for Carly to be included.
That's a low cost/no risk way of picking up some brownie points. Thing is - they didn't ACTUALLY want her there - they wanted the good pr that comes with saying they want her there.
No one among the candidates wanted her there - she a damn good debater and could well have taken the spotlight away from them as a result - if not deliver a stinging blow.

A depressing juxtaposition demonstrating where our society is and the intolerance and authoritarianism of the left.
Andrew Cuomo joins in the nationwide effort to prevent homosexuals who would like to attempt to no longer be homosexuals from even trying or receiving therapy from licensed therapists.
At the same time they push to make hormonal therapy, psychotherapy and the most drastic surgeries available to any person including children suffering from the delusion they are trapped in a body of the wrong sex.
This despite the fact there are indications the latter group is harmed a great deal more than the former by the respective therapies.
It's a sick world and the left's prescription is bring on the disease.

I'm not one who cares one way or another on the showboating stuff (unless it's against my team!), but it really is something to go back and watch Barry Sanders after a touchdown - flips the ball to the ref, teammates pat him on the back, and he casually runs back to the sideline. No dancing, no jumping around, no taunting or jabbering.
It's the old proverbial saying - he acted like he had been there before.

I believe the idea behind selecting Comrade Sanders was that Hilary's performance on Super Tuesday would be so spectacular as to give him reason to withdraw while she advanced in a blaze of glory. The strength of ABH sentiment is such that the initial plan may prove to have been rather misguided. Should Comrade Sanders not withdraw, Hilary's march of triumph in the second half may come to resemble the Bataan Death March.
Has anyone else noticed the denial of free publicity to Trump since Iowa? The strength of the ABT vote has the MFM second guessing their 'one weird trick' tactic.

CNN says this about the Clinton's speeches (via Powerline):
In total, the two gave 729 speeches from February 2001 until May
That's roughly 5,200 days.
If we assume that they both gave an equal number of speeches - and frame it so that they took turns and spoke on a regular schedule - there would have been one Clinton speech every week for 14 years.

Clarice,
The Fascists believed that if the choice were Commie or Witch, the Witch would naturally prevail. They neglected to ascertain the impact of their own indoctrination system in making the Commie acceptable and minimized the antipathy which the wicked old Witch elicits. I certainly don't count the Witch out, her true core, F>50 w/teaching credential, has too much influence for that. OTOH - the ABH factor may be far greater and the demographic 'majority' far weaker than the Fascist Fractured Fairytale envisions.

I don't like the show boating either. I had a coach that used to teach, "we win with a little humility and lose with a lot of dignity." Bobby Orr seldom raised his stick after scoring a goal. He usually bowed his head and skated away so as not to embarrass the other teams goalie...that's a leader in my estimation.

So the news isn't all bad. [I deplore this eliminationist rhetoric, however carefully targeted! - ed.]

He took a Packer fan's banner. Real class act that Cam. He is a jerk at heart.
But as far as pro
wrestlingfootball goes, they all do it these days. I blame the Madden Football graphics for all the excessive (and very choreographed) celebration on all the meaningless plays. So Fam's hamming it up is not surprising.Posted by: henry | February 07, 2016 at 02:45 PM
he is having fun!
One assumes so is his dad with that ~$170K he mysteriously came into just about the time Scam matriculated into Auburn...

Since no one else has said the obvious, I will.
What should you do if you get a call from a member of the Carolina team?
As Ogden Nash said:
"If a panther calls,
don't anther."

Cam is an an amateur compared to Red Auerbach, Momto2. When Auerbach coached the Boston Celtics, if the Celtics were well ahead in the fourth quarter, Red would light up a victory cigar on the bench before the game ended. Talk about in yo face. I can imagine what proper post-modern corporate type Adam Silver would have thought.

When should Carson announce a shift to running for Rubio's seat in the Senate? He needs 120K signatures and the filing period is June 20th to June 24th. Dropping out before the South Carolina primary would make sense in order to avoid a 'three time loser' tag.
I'd really like to see him in the Senate from Florida.

henry - Newton took a Seahawks banner from a group of fans.
To me, that's like tearing down another candidate's sign.

TM,
Since no one asked, I am a youth, energy, strong defense and big running game guy. I would love to see Peyton go out on top but he is more likely to go out on a golf cart - I don't see Denver winning this thing.
In what little I've seen of Cam and the Panthers, their opponents completely lose composure in the first half of the game. Happened to the Giants, who came back to tie from what? 27 points down to lose on a field goal. It happened to the Seahawks who were down 31 - 0 in the first half.
If Denver can maintain their composure during the initial onslaught, I think they can win it. Easier said than done, I'm sure. Carolina seems to open the game by severely intimidating every team they play, and then the other team collects themselves and makes a game of it. Carolina has to be doing something right to so thoroughly intimidate.
I didn't see the debate. Did Rubio really look that bad. It didn't look so bad in the clips. And Christie, pressed by Chris Wallace on FNS, his answer annoyed hell out me -- "Don't insult the people of New Jersey." Please. Not a fan.

I read that Cam Newton can complete a sweep only done by Marcus Allen. IIRC, it is college champ, pro champ, Heisman, MVP. Maybe Rookie of Year as well.
Touchdown Tony Dorsett must have missed something (pro MVP?), because I have a vivid recollection of him going from champ at Pitt to rookie champ at Dallas. I mention this just to document my failing memory - on to Google!

If Bill drops dead, The Hill's odds of being the next POTUS increase dramatically. I'm wishing for good health for Bill.

I'm rooting for the Panthers, but I hate the excessive celebration.
Seems narcissistic--- lots of self celebration.
One thing to have a teammate approach you and do a high five or smack your butt or even a chest thump, but the solo stuff doesn't set right by me.
Though now, it's part of Panther Pride. Doing the Dab and Keep Pounding.
Did Cam start giving away the footballs after the criticism started?
Great PR move. The kids love it, and it makes wonderful TV.
Took dessert over to the neighbors where we've been invited to watch The Game. They outfitted their den with astroturf and have a projection TV showing on a ?16x10 screen. Connected two big wedding tents to that room via the slider---more astroturf-- a bar, inflated bounce house for the 27 kids. A big time will be had by all!
GO PANTHERS!
