Senior Night Out turns into Fight Night as Bernie and Hillarity! drop the gloves. Who won? Well, after twenty-five years on the national stage it is hard for Hillary to change many minds. As the national front-runner, so she really needs only to reassure her supporters and sit on her lead. I think she failed. Bernie needs to get people to take a look and persuade them he is something other than a kook and a crank. He succeeded. Of course, experts differ.
Was the best moment when Hillary hopped on her broomstick and flew over the stage spitting flames and cackling "Afraid of fire, scarecrow"? Or was it when Hillary, challenged about her Goldman Sachs speeches, found her inner Jack Nicholson and delivered a riff on "A Few Good Candidates", shouting
"You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at debates you want me at that Goldman Sachs fundraiser. You need me at that Goldman Sachs fundraiser.
We use words like "Access", "Super-PAC", "cronyism". We use these words as the backbone of a life spent making progressive progress, or something. You use them as a punch line."
From the transcript:
Time and time again, by insinuation, there is this attack that he is putting forth, which really comes down to, you know, anybody who ever took donations or speaking fees from any interest group has to be bought. I just absolutely reject that, Senator. I really don't think these kinds of attacks by insinuation are worthy of you. Enough is enough. If you've got something to say, say it directly. You will not find that I ever changed a view or a vote because of any donation that I ever received.
First, forget about Jack Nicholson - she really was channeling her inner Mitch McConnell, who made exactly that argument on the Senate floor while opposing Sen. McCain on campaign finance reform (this is a late 90's edition):
Within moments of taking up campaign-finance reform Thursday, the Senate floor became the stage for a series of rare personal attacks and recriminations among majority Republicans.
Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the legislation's chief opponent, challenged reform advocate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to name Senate colleagues who have been corrupted by high-dollar political contributions.
''How can there be corruption if no one is corrupt?'' McConnell asked, zeroing in on McCain's frequent speeches about the issue in his presidential campaign. ''That's like saying the gang is corrupt but none of the gangsters are.''
When McCain refused to name names, Sen. Robert Bennett, R-Utah, confronted him. Standing just eight feet from him on the Republican side of the chamber, Bennett charged that McCain had accused him of corruption in seeking pork-barrel spending for his home state.
''I am unaware of any money given that influenced my action here,'' Bennett said. ''I have been accused of being corrupt. ... I take personal offense.''
Its a good enough argument for Mitch, and good enough for Hillary.
Secondly, how many Democrats are going to buy Hillary's nuanced view that every Republican and possibly one or two Democrats are captive to their donors but she is not?
Finally, many argue, no doubt including Hillary on other occasions, that donors are buying access, not votes. They want to be sure they are heard when legislation affecting their interests moves through Congress. Is Hillary seriously going to pretend she doesn't even return phone calls from top donors?
And double-finally, filed under "Homework Fail" - how could Team Hillary have been unaware of this St. Elizabeth video from 2004? Elizabeth Warren claims that Hillary opposed a Wall Street supported bankruptcy reform bill as First Lady, ultimately leading to a Bill Clinton veto in 2000. A few years later Senator Hillary switched sides, due to (Ms. Warren claims) fundraising duties and Wall Street money, and supported a revived and revised version. Team Sanders is flooding the zone with this clip and hard times await the progressive who crosses Pocahontas.
On net, that was not a good moment for Hillary, and her lack of a cogent response continues to be surprising.
ERRATA: The WaPo has been piling on this Goldman Sachs issue (her Wall Street money, bad answer at the town hall, terrible answer at the town hall). The kinder, gentler Times has yet to endure the inevitable newsroom revolt when, as in 2008, the editors back Hillary and the reporters back the latest progressive darling.
BONUS HILLARITY!
From the Times:
On Thursday, Mrs. Clinton expanded on her paid speechmaking, saying she also spoke to other groups, like heart surgeons and camp counselors. But again, she seemed to struggle, this time when pressed by the moderators if she would release the transcripts of all of her paid speeches.
“I will look into it,” she said. “I don’t know the status, but I will certainly look into it.”
Yeah, those speeches probably need to be vetted for classified information. Or maybe the dog ate them.
Not gonna forget to hit publish on this one, were you...

Its the old Western Union building on Houston St. in Tri-Beca. I think WOR is in that building but could be wrong. Looks like a crawler crane with too much boom and not enough counterweight. In an urban environment like that rigging plans should be reviewed and approved like any architectural or engineering plans.

"Speaking strictly anecdotally, in my family her support is inversely correlated to the functionality of the ovaries.'
On the Alaska cruise we had a panel of MK Hamm, Katie Pavlich, Eliana Johnson and maybe someone else talking about "the war on women".
Equal pay, baloney, BS and issues I no longer recall. I wanted to tell them, and should have, that the war on woman was over 40 years ago, and has been recreated for the democrats. In my generation I got more opportunity because I am a woman than anything. My first professional job was for a company who was told by the government to hire women,(1976) my second job they were looking for a woman,(1978) law school they wanted 50% women (1983). It is such a joke. The only thing I can recall being discriminated against was I was required to have a co-signer on a car loan, because I am a woman.
The dems manufacture this joke for every generation, and we should tell people who believe it that they are being used.
The real people being discriminated against are white men.

So I now have a semi-official description for the new book:
It should have been a simple job. All archaeology student Jane Barnaby had to do was pick up a box her professor needed and deliver it to him at his dig site, along with his new car. Yes, his office was in Oxfordshire, and his dig site was in Spain, a trip of 1,300 miles across three countries and two bodies of water. Still, it should have been simple.
And it was, until Jane discovered she picked up the wrong box by mistake. Not the one with boring pottery samples, but instead the one with priceless ancient Egyptian artifacts. The one that a team of international art thieves is after.
Now she’s chasing – and being chased – by the thieves. And she’s picked up a pair of passengers who claim they can help her outwit them, get her professor’s pottery back and return the artifacts to their rightful owner. If only she could figure out which one of them is working with the thieves, and which one she can trust in this high-stakes game of finders keepers.

One of my BILs is about 15 years my junior. He entered Med School late 80s at Ohio State. One of the things 1st year students do in pairs is carve up a cadaver in an anatomy class.
He got paired with a black female student with an attitude. She was being provided an "opportunity" to "right" many of the School's past sins and was quick to let him know it.
As you might expect, she was not really qualified to be there. BIL said it was very quickly apparent to him and the professors that she wasn't cutting the mustard so they assigned someone to tutor her.
She didn't pass to 2nd year. Not once, but three years in a row before they quietly gave her the boot.
BIL's comment was "would you want her treating your kid"?

And since they probably have the same type of cohorts, my wife's gal pals of a 'certain age' LUV Hilligula, my wife can't believe it. My 22yo daughter considers Hilligula 'gross,' but she thinks Bern is a doddering old fool. Same in my law school. Between the old people (me at 31) and the minorities, the difference between the young white kids and the rest of the class was glaring. I had one black woman friend who was absolutely brilliant and clearly would have gotten in on merit. I felt badly for her because she was considered a minority acceptee.

"The Secretary of State was charged to be the watchdog of our history; she was not. Hundreds of others at the State Department including the IT Department, its FOIA shop, and career civil servants had to have seen and known that the leader of their agency was improperly using a personal email address and –as far as the evidence has borne out– did nothing. They should have alerted the Archivist of the United States, their Inspector General, blown the whistle to congress, or leaked the misconduct to the press."

--Finally, many argue, no doubt including Hillary on other occasions, that donors are buying access, not votes.--
What they're buying is influence and power.
When you're a fat kid with your mouth open, the adult who pours the most M&Ms in is the one who already knows your affection can be bought.
Hillary knows it's not a matter of changing your vote because of some extemporaneous quid pro quo; it's acting as the reliable agent for your paymaster from the get go.
Crony and state interests align and so the graft creates the crony-state axis that boxes out the guys trying to get the state's thumb off the scale.
Worse and increasingly, it is all cronies all the time and the only one boxed out is the individual and the citizen/taxpayer.

--On net, that was not a good moment for Hillary, and her lack of a cogent response continues to be surprising.--
Why surprising?
It's been obvious for years she is a terrible candidate. She can handle, in a journeyman rather than a master's way, routine rote stuff.
As soon as something hits her from an unexpected angle she starts sputtering until "splunge" pops out of her perplexed face.
And because she is such a crook she has all sorts of unexpected angles that simply won't square. In that situation you need a master bullshitter like BillyJeff Rape Kit to spin the flim flam bafflegab web until everybody has their head cocked to the side like RCA's Nipper confused but soothed at the sound of their master's voice.
Flim flam men however are born not made and hideous Hillary was not born into a denim gene pantsuit.
She'll forever be the incompetent understudy who could only survive, remora like, next to her shark of a spouse.
Sharks without teeth don't last long and BJ is looking like he's not far from a strictly tapioca diet these days so the remora has to fend for herself. Parasites don't last long when the host is sick.
Those who sow the wind will reap the whirlwind which is why HILLARY WILL NEVER BE PRESIDENT.

We should require that all government employees and politicians be required to use only the VA system for their medical needs. No exceptions.

OL,
You got an amen and hallelujah from me!

But I should point out that you are preaching to the choir.
Posted by: Sue | February 05, 2016 at 11:40 AM
I know.

As you might expect, she was not really qualified to be there.
I had a similar but opposite attitude experience when I was going to grad school at Crewe (or whatever James calls it). When I had Saturday classes I'd often go over to the campus gym to play pickup games with other students and the campus workers. A few times this tall guy named Lucky (I never found out his real name) showed up who was very pleasant as he absolutely thrashed my ass. One day he took me aside and told me he was starting undergrad in the fall under a scholarship and was worried that coming from a crummy city school he wouldn't be able to cut the mustard.
I told him that being concerned about it enough to talk with me was a good sign. He struck me, based on what little I knew about him, as smart enough to succeed if he kept up with the work, which I told him should be his highest priority. Also, the school didn't give him a scholarship for him to fall so they had an investment in him, which he should take advantage of by asking for a tutor if the light wasn't going on. I finally told him that college wasn't for everybody so that if he gave a good effort but it just didn't work out, he could still figure out how to have a successful and happy life.
I hope he's having a happy life.

History will not be kind to our generation.

No worry, NK. By the time they wake up you and I will have Dacha's in the country which we access by limo in dedicated lanes.

That Legal Insurrection 2nd Amendment article is, in the vernacular du jour, YUGE!
If we end up with different districts applying different levels of scrutiny to gun laws it is almost certain the SCOTUS will take the issue up and with Heller and McDonald as precedent it is hard to see how 2nd amendment rights are the only constitutional rights not the beneficiaries of strict scrutiny...at least with the present court makeup.
