Perhaps, NK. But remember that Bogaerts is still young enough to have another mediocre year before finally breaking out. Ortiz, the old geezer, is the only one in whom I have any confidence. Starting pitching? I'm sure Clay Buchholz will have a stretch of 15 starts in which he goes 10-2 with a 1.98 ERA. The rest of the year he'll either be on the DL or struggling to last until the fifth inning. Eduardo will go 11-14 with a 4.67 ERA. But I am optimistic about him. Next year will be his breakout year. Matt Barnes? OK in relief. Porcello? He is what he is, which is what we saw last year. Joe Kelly? Forever one with unlimited potential. Mookie and Brock? Yeah, they'll bring some excitement. Castillo? Unproven. Bradley? The outfield equivalent of Joe Kelly. Unlimited potential, unsteady actual performance. Swihart? It'll be nice to see him develop.

NK

TC-- that is about the most clear headed, albeit probably overly pessimistic take (except for that old roid cheat Ortiz) I've ever heard from a dyed in the wool Saux fan. Do you actually say these things to fellow New Englanders?

For those of you who listened to the Funeral Mass Homily for Justice Antonin Scalia, you may want to read or at least save a copy of the text of that Homily.

For those who have not yet listened to the Homily for Justice Scalia, here you go !

Jeff Dobbs

Deb:
I agree, which makes me now think I should vote for Trump on March 1 to help him win the delegates needed, as a brokered convention is the worst case scenario imo.

That honestly makes me shudder. Trying to game out who to vote for based upon something other than determining who you want to win and to serve in that office seems a fool's bet, imo.

Way too many variables to accurately predict why voting for someone other than who you want to win is better than voting for the person you actually want to win.

If Deb is voting for Trump, I may go back to believing Scott Adams' hypnotism theory again.

NK

Recess over?-- not surprised he will do the appointment during August recess when the POTUS election is on, and after the Repubs stalled hearings his selection this spring. It's bread and circuses for the lowest common denominator types, and Obummer treats it that way.

From your daily Wretchard:

It is telling that the Obama administration has come out forcefully against Britain's exit from the European Union, that is to say on behalf of suicide.
But last year, when Obama urged Britons to stay in the bloc, he drew near-universal calls for him to butt out of British domestic affairs — underlining the risk that American officials and companies face in inserting themselves into the debate.

“The British public have gone completely skeptical of the United States’ foreign policy intentions,” said Kurt Volker, a former U.S. ambassador to NATO.

That may not have put Obama off, with the president planning another attempt to sway British voters. “I know the president is planning to make a pretty big public reach-out in this regard,” Bob Corker said.

Just as everyone is trying to unshackled the anvil clamped round their legs, Obama is working feverishly to clamp them back on.

I think the world is pretty sick of Zero's shit right about now. Well, those who were once our putative allies. I wonder if we'll ever have an ally again?

We will have allies the moment we generate a surplus and are willing to use it for external subsidy. It may be some time before that occurs but there will be a line when it does.

Yes, NK, I try to call 'em as I see 'em even when I'm with other Sox fans. I think the only time I was guilty of irrational exuberance was when I was convinced, in 1967, that there was no way Gentleman Jim was going to lose to Bob Gibson in Game 7. Perhaps I was overly optimistic when I thought that in 1986, that little 10th inning hiccup in Game 6 would not prevent the Sox from rolling in Game 7 against the Mets.

By the way, I credit my late great Mom, a Sox fan who still enjoyed Babe Ruth's exploits with the Yankees, with the Sox's comeback in '04. In her whole life, she only watched two Yankees-Sox games with me. They were Games 6 and 7 of the 2004 ALCS.

40 years ago the percentage of women in the workforce was less than half that of men.

So Kasich was right, but Larry Summers can probably tell him a few things about what facts not to bring up with the media ready to pounce on every syllable.

The 38 Bush voters and 417 Bush donors who just migrated to Kasich must be having a really, really bad day. lol

I'm voting with Susan Sarandons vagina. Then I'm giving it back to her with a Cruz bumper sticker attached. April 5 can't get here soon enough.

JiB, thanks for posting that 2:54 link. Not being Catholic I'm only somewhat aware of the unfortunate trends in liturgical practice that the writer refers to, though of course it goes beyond Catholicism to other denominations and religions. I'm unclear on why Kasich's comment is so awful except as an indication of him being around for way too long.

Unless you're not into actual factual history where yes, the population of housewives was in fact much higher back then.

Jeff Dobbs

Glasater,

Rick Tyler tweeted out a video saying that Rubio dissed the Bible as he passed Cruz's dad in a lobby.

Passing Rafael, Rubio said something like,
"Nice book". Then according to Tyler he said, "Not a lot of answers in there".

But what he really said was more like "all the answers are in there".

I didn't watch the video to listen for myself - just read tweets about it.

cheerleader

Cruz firing Rick Tyler is startling news. I wonder if it has anything to do with the video he put out about Rubio, then withdrew and apologized for.

henry

So Tyler is standard GOPe consultant talent?

NK

If Cruz's guy made up a cheap lie about Rubio and Cruz's dad's bible, I would expect nothing less than Cruz firing the guy.

lyle

Sounds like it, henry.

Beasts of England

Note: I might not at this very moment know the answers to all those questions, but I damn sure have known all the answers in my life...

lyle

Will The Ledge™ have separate areas for Cruz and Kasich supporters?

I've already cordoned off my area with a "Cruz supporters welcome" sign. Kasich supporters take up too much room with all the karate chop action...

Jane

Some college newspaper reported that Rubio said there are no answers in the bible. Tyler picked it up and went with it. He also apologized for it when he learned it was wrong. Rather than get in another fight about lying, Cruz let Tyler go.

jimmyk

Getting back to the VP discussion, if Trump were to get the nomination: I'd be much more comfortable voting for Trump if he picked Walker than if he picked Kasich. I would almost not have to hold my nose. I do think he should pick a conservative governor, and while Wisconsin is not as big as Ohio or Florida, it's still a swing state.

Beasts of England

Which side has the kitchen? I may need a sammich...

Jeff Dobbs

Will The Ledge™ have separate areas for Cruz and Kasich supporters?

I'm a little torn. I heard the Kasich section of the ledge will be lavishly taxpayer funded.

I'm not so hot on the replacement of happy hour with a mandatory hug hour, though.

daddy

Just for interest, here is a pic of Cruz's Communications Director Rick Tyler, that Cruz just asked to resign:

Thought I'd post what the guy looks like since all I keep seeing are pics of Cruz or of Rubio, never of this creep.

Also FTR, I bet I spend more time in the kitchen than almost all of our friend's and family's galfolk. And all of them would agree. Bite me, Kasich.

Hot Mic Captures Trump Asking ‘Morning Joe’ Hosts For No ‘Too Hard’ Questions (AUDIO)

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/morning-joe-hot-mic-trump-conversation

rse

No, OL. Encounter Books doesn't want anything to do with me. Did you know it is funded by the Harry and Lynda Bradley Foundation and exists to promote public policy, especially School Choice.

Since I have said School Choice cannot work as long as the accreditors have their current gatekeeper power I am personae non grata.

The person referred to in my most recent post and quote, though unnamed, does have a contract to write a book on the Common Core for them. It keeps being delayed. There is some speculation that what she wanted to recommend I would have seen the problems of.

That may well have been why another major recipient of Bradley Foundation largesse was so anxious to get me to write something for little money that would not belong to me. Fortunately I get that copyright can become a gag and declined.

Old Lurker

OK I just went to re-read the Lincoln Inaugural Addresses so I am good now with the questions. Please ask me again, teacher.

Old Lurker

But RSE, this was pure you:

"...They are the cream of their generation, the masters of the universe, a generation-in-waiting to run America and the world.

But ask them some basic questions about the civilization they will be inheriting, and be prepared for averted eyes and somewhat panicked looks. Who fought in the Peloponnesian War? Who taught Plato, and whom did Plato teach? How did Socrates die? Raise your hand if you have read both the Iliad and the Odyssey. The Canterbury Tales? Paradise Lost? The Inferno?

Who was Saul of Tarsus? What were the 95 theses, who wrote them, and what was their effect? Why does the Magna Carta matter? How and where did Thomas Becket die? Who was Guy Fawkes, and why is there a day named after him? What did Lincoln say in his Second Inaugural? His first Inaugural? How about his third Inaugural? What are the Federalist Papers?..."

glasater

Thanks, Jeff and everyone.

Beasts of England

I don't think anyone is gonna accuse me of being some touchy-feely, new age kinda guy, but like lyle, I spend tons of time in the kitchen. And chicks totally dig it, so I got that going for me...

And Mr. OL: you know that your 4:10 is going in your permanent record! :)

rse

Yes it is OL and I do know the answers, but that particular article is to make people believe that a certain kind of charter will restore that kind of ed. Right now that's not true, hence the hysterical response I quoted in the post.

I am working on nailing down a very odd alliance. In fact I just took a break because sometimes the enormity makes me just tired.

Old Lurker

Yes, Beasts, Jeff keeps the hard copy of my record.

He says he burns it from time to time, but I know he just burns a copy of a copy of it.

of course a man with absolutely no personal standards, whatsoever, needs to never apologize. Le Donald can never violate standards he does not possess.

There is no reasoning with persuadeable voters.

Miss Marple

Glasater,

I am glad someone answered you, and the information is as posted here.

I am waiting in the line at the middle school to pick up my granddaughter after her play practice.

Newt was just on Hannity. He said the level of denial about Trump in the pundit and consultant groups is just astounding. He said he was in an argument with someone who said he wouldn't vote for Trump because he's not pro-life enough. Newt said he asked the guy if he was thinking that. Bernie or Hillary would be better?

daddy on the FBI secure iPhone

Hannity on radio has on Newt via a call in. Newt is providing more excellent comments on the Trump phenomena. I will try to see thr podcast later and post some of the inciteful observations of the former Speaker. Very interesting comments, Says that Kasich is almost his best friend of the last 30 years and lists his record and accomplishments etc, but does not endorse Kasich. He knows Washington is broken. He says Washington is policy but their sickness is implementation. Says Trump is a gamble because even Trump has no idea of what sort of President he will be, but says he has a better chance of kicking the DC table over and making Washington work than the others because he is a force of nature.

NK

Le Donald didn't persuade anyone. He just tells the marks what they want to hear. He's been doing that for 40 years. He's just gone retail and low brow, as opposed to the high net worth investors and bankers marks he conned for 40 years.

Miss Marple

I had to be here at 5:00, and I am sure if I had been late and kept the teacher waiting there would have been strong words.

However, the kids are not out yet and last week I sat here until 5:15. Hannah tells me that when they are done with practice they sit in a circle and talks about their feelings.

😡😡😡

Threadkiller

So none of the people who have cast their vote for Trump are members of the group "persuadeable?"

Are the persuadeables still sitting this out or have they not found a liberal enough candidate in the GOP field?

Appalled

daddy:

If I understand Newt correctly, what Trump is offering is hope and change, and the magical ability to change the weather.

Well, that might have persuaded me eight years ago...

Miss Marple

daddy,

I thought it was interesting that the event coordinator for Atlanta thought she had done a good job on being economical until the Trump people came in, went over everything, and shaved off an additional $40,000.

daddy on the FBI secure iPhone

Miss M, glad you caught Newt. I am sitting in the library parking listening. Unfortunately our Hannity hours are backward, so I caught part of Newt but now it seems they r replaying an earlier hour, so no more Newt. Keep us posted if u catch Newts second segment

Miss Marple

Newt says he has a force of will to change things. Closest analogy he can think of is Andrew Jackson.

Sees there will be lots of big fights.

Kids are starting to come out. I will listen and try to remember to report when I get home.

NK

There are no persuadable voters... some genius taught me that 4 years ago.
