Beasts,

Mirengoff at Powerline makes this point:

What I find most interesting about Biden’s 1992 comment is that it appears to have been gratuitous. There was no Supreme Court vacancy at the time Biden opined, and no reason to believe that a Justice was close to death or about to resign.

Thus, as far as I can tell, Biden didn’t need to make his remark; it was uncalled for. But when did that ever stop Talkin’ Joe?

At one time I thought that the way to defeat Trump was to co-opt his issues, while at the same time coming across as less of a flame-thower. I think that is what Cruz tried to do. That it hasn't quite worked may have something to do with Cruz himself, in that he is off-putting to a lot of people--well, women, more than men, I think. Miss Jane Marple

Good evening!

I have been at the grocery and putting food away. A storm is starting tonight and we are to have 2 days of high wind and heavy rain changing to snow, so thought I had better get it done.

Now for a long story which is an example of odd political behavior from my youth.

When I was in high school, we had a very crowded cafeteria with terrible food. You had 20 minutes total to get in, eat such delicacies as Indiana cafeteria lady style chow mein, fried chicken that was raw in the center, leather-like hamburgers with poorly heated tater tots, etc.

I was the editor of the school paper that year, and knew a lot of people. I had a wide circle of connections due to being in the flag corps, the newspaper, the history club, and such.

So, we decided we would strike the cafeteria. We decided to do it on Thursday AND Friday, so they would have to throw away the leftovers rather than serving them the next day.

This was a UNIFYING issue. EVERYONE hated the food. We got almost every group in the school involved, from the cheerleaders and jocks to the audio visual guys and the chess club. The office girls ran off copies of our call to strike on the mimeo machine in the office, right under the nose of the administration. We also planned the strike when the principal (a martinet my father called Smiling Albert adter Albert Kesserling, the German general) was going to be gone to a conference.

No one expected it, and it was a great success! The cooks stood and stared in loneliness, as we brought our own lunches. Some kids got parents to bring in Burger Chef hamburgers or their mother's best recipes!

AND, I got called to the office because they thought they could get me to crack and rat out who was involved, because my mother was the dean at the middle school. HA! I refused!

What is the point of this story?

Trump has found a unifying issue, immigration, which is sort of like the bad cafeteria food. He has a plan which has been executed under the noses of the experts, much like we did back in the 60's. And, the unifying issue has not only attracted people, but they are sticking with it because they are enjoying being participants. They feel like they are finally DOING something.

When you see people starting their own YouTube channels to support him, and people making photo shops and music videos without pay, there's something going on.

I think this is like that cafeteria strike of 1966; the people have the bit in their teeth and they are not going to be denied.

Sue

Just curious, did your strike improve the food?

Stephanie

Rick Tyler was Todd Akin's spokesman in 2012 and we are wondering why Cruz had campaign issues.

Very safe for work.

Jeff Dobbs

Miss Marple:
When you see people starting their own YouTube channels to support him, and people making photo shops and music videos without pay, there's something going on.

I, too, remember Obama's 2008 campaign.

Thomas Collins

Upselling, Lyle? That's what Destiny, Tatiana and Precious do!

maryd

Stephanie, just hilarious!

Miss Jane Marple

Stephanie,

We got rid of the chow mein and the raw fried chicken. We also got options offered without comment like increased snacks sold a la carte.

There were, of course, no negotiations. This was 1966, remember. I think they just gave us some concessions so we wouldn't strike again.

It was one of my fondest high school memories, right up there with wearing my long hair down at the prom with hoop earrings and a misses department linen hostess-length sheath in floral print as opposed to a hoop skirt with a French roll. HA!

when your mom and grandparents have been teachers and in administration, you know exactly what buttons to push. Which, it suddenly occurs to me, is similar to Trump in that he knows where a lot of the bodies are buried.

Thomas Collins

Ah, maryd! I can just taste those cookies!

Thomas Collins

I have one problem with your analogy, MJM. You got rid of the bad apples from the cafeteria. Trumpster may talk about getting rid of the bad apples, but his plan for doing it is as related to reality as Comrade Sanders's plan for growing the economy.

Stephanie

Out to dinner.. bbl.

centralcal

Exactly, TC!!

Miss Jane Marple

Ah, Thomas Collins, how do you know?

When we started the strike, we had nothing in mind except to stick it to the school for our lunchtime suffering, which, of course, was rather juvenile but this was 1966 and I was 17.

Surprisingly, we made a little progress.

lyle

Then Tatiana and Destiny (sorry, no Precious) and we should have one grand evening, TC, with all that upselling!

lyle

Per HA, Jeb wouldn't take Donald's call. Maybe a sweet ambassadorship will soothe Jeb circa '17.

Thomas Collins

How do I know, MJM? Well, it seems your plan, although perhaps the odds were against it, had a chance from the beginning, especially with you in charge. Deporting every illegal and then taking their applications to come back in, which Trump emphasized when he was challenged on it in a debate, just isn't going to happen. Congress won't fund it, it will be a distraction from focusing on the illegals who are national security risks, and it will sap Trump's credibility for what should be the main priority, namely, deal first with the jihadists already in the country and those trying to get in.

Threadkiller

Will deporting illegal aliens out of jails work?

daddy

mcconnell-to-obama-dont-forget-that-its-illegal-to-transfer-terrorists-to-us/

So what are you going to do Mitch when he transfers them to US soil regardless?

Can't impeach him---you already said you won't do that, and it wouldn't pass anyhow

Can't prevent the C-5 from flying them over here, since that's not under your purview, and once it's done it's a done deal and then new US Law kicks in.

Fat chance on trying to get some blocking injunction from the Courts.

I don't know the legal ins and outs, but in my uneducated opinion I fail to see what ace McConnell has up his sleeve to squash this. As I recall, the president wasn't legally allowed to cut an agreement with the Iranians allowing him to give them $150 Billion back.

It seems to me that Senator McConnell is able to control the behavior of the Senate---he long ago surrendered trying to control the behavior of the president.

Thomas Collins

Under current border policies, TK, it's probably better to leave them in the hoosegow.

Jane

When did Santorum drop out. I don't recall hearing about it.

Miss Jane Marple

Thomas Collins,

You are confusing apples and oranges.

I am drawing the comparison of my cafeteria strike to the populist movement that has elevated Trump. The psychology is the same.

It has NOTHING to do with whther or not his semi-deportation program would work. It's mostly about how he is attracting supporters and participants.

lyle

Reid is claiming the Senate blocking Zero's SC nom is like blocking the Civil Rights Act. He's apparently full on concern trolling Grassley with pseudo concern about Grassley's legacy. Reid is a POS subhuman but this level of BS is proof of how weak the Dem's hand is. Say, doesn't some popcorn sound tasty right now?

Thomas Collins

In any event, I have a suggestion on where to house the jihadists currently in Guantanamo: not only the White House, but also in the homes of city council members and mayors of sanctuary cities who support sanctuary city policies.

Jane

Does the support for Trump remind anyone else of the 2008 support for Obama. The guy says nothing and his supporters drool. They like the idea of him, without having a clue about him.

it's creepy.

Jeff Dobbs

Santorum dropped out two days after Iowa.

common man

Here is the Ace. The American people dont want terrorists brought onto American soil just to let Bozo fulfill a campaign promise. And they will take it out on his party if he does it against the law. I personally hope he does, just to see the @ss whippin at the polls but even this blantant narcissist will not do it in a election year. No matter Hillary is toast regardless given how unenthusiastic Democrats are about her or Burn it Down. But any chance of taking the Senate in a hugely Democrat favorable year due to the seats up, goes up in a huge cloud of blue smoke.

Threadkiller

LOL, Jane!

lyle

Don't watch Lou Dobbs then, Jane. It's a nightly droolfest.

Miss Jane Marple

Jane,

Yes, it's similar. Trump paid attention to what Obama did, I bet.

It's a symptom of the age. My first encounter with this was an older receptionist where I worked back in 1992. She voted for Clinton because he had such nice hair.

Of such voters are majorities sometimes made.

jimmyk

Did he try "That's different because shut up!"

When did Santorum drop out. I don't recall hearing about it.

Talk about a tree falling in the forest...

Thomas Collins

The psychology may be the same, MJM. But I'm focusing on whether his policies would work, because after Obama, I'd prefer to have a POTUS who can undo Obama's policies, and I don't see Trump as that person. I realize many of my friends here disagree with me, but that's where my focus is.

But if you think I'm mixing up apples and oranges, send me a bag of the finest ones of each from your area and I'll try to sort them out!

Is it because Trump says wall instead of fence?

Kasich isn't all that popular in Ohio, particularly with the GOP base after his Medicaid bait and switch. He barely beat Twitch Strickland after ol' Ted's four years of nothing going right. I'd also like to know how a country that put a man on the moon, defeated the Soviet Bloc and has so far survived a man-child in the WH doing his best to sink us will find it impossible to locate and deport a good portion of the millions of illegals that are here.
We could scoop up half of them just dropping a net out in front of Lowes and Home Depots.
