My oldest daughter has a speech class in college. She has to give a persuasive speech in support of Hilligula. Topic was assigned by idiot prof who stated she is voting for The Bern. My daughter is beside herself. "What the hell am I supposed to say about her? She's horrible!!".

My hatred for the idiots in charge of post-secondary education grows every day.

Talk about category error, in a piece about Frauke Petry in Germany:

At one point during the campaign Mrs Petry even suggested that German border guards should “use firearms if necessary” to prevent illegal border crossings, a statement that evoked memories of the Cold War and outraged the German political and media establishment.

They don't seem to get the rather fundamental distinction between preventing foreigners from entering vs preventing your own people from leaving.

I was going to link that, bulgaria apparently has little qualms about the matter, I think the telegraph lost something when conrad black had to turn it over to the barclay bros, btw, who was on their board for a time?

Look at it this way Gentlejim, if your girl can in any way make that unspeakable harridan even slightly human, you will know for certain you have a veritable genius on your hands.

Porchlight

If the prof is a Bernie fan, she may not need to worry about telling the truth. In my experience Bernie fans are decidedly anti-Hillary.

Porchlight

"Lucky you"

Yes, kim. I am really lucky in that regard.

By the way, Mr Porch used to smoke 1-2 packs/day. He quit cold turkey using Allen Carr's book. That was five years ago. He says that the desire was completely gone almost immediately. For anyone that might be thinking about it.

gentlejim

There is that Iggy.
That might be true porch. My concern is that the Doom effect is already in place as far as her grade goes.

that is a concern, back in the day, the lefty professors I had, did not downgrade students for their opinions, and that was 20 years ago,

Since it's after midnight back east I'll bid everyone a Happy Easter and sign off.

Glasater,

Momma won't let me do FaceBook, but if I was on FaceBook here's my Easter Story i'd probably post.

Landed in Penang 2 mornings back after an all nighter from China. On arrival Mr Lao, our wonderful Malay/Thai Buddhist driver, meets us in his cab with his regular treat for us---2 cold cans of what he calls "Mouthwash" (Tiger Beer), and off we zip for the hour drive to the hotel.

Along the way we are having such a good time chatting, and because it is the weekend when the Chinese clean out temples because of something like it is the day for the return of the souls of their ancestors, he suggests we stop at a Thai Buddhist Temple. We do---The Buppharam Buddhist Temple (The Temple of The Lifting Buddha)

We leave our "Mouthwash" in the Taxi, remove our shoes, then wander the grounds as he explains various stuff about the Temple.
These statues are prominent, but as you get closer you see their skin texture is peeling and, at first glance, a tad creepy:

Mr Lao explains that if you have a medical issue, like a hurt knee for instance, you would pay money for a small bit of gold leaf which you would then rub onto the knee of this Buddha statue until it sticks, and the Buddha would then heal your hurt knee.

He takes us into rear of the Temple, just across from a Monk sitting on this platform, chanting, and offering ablution to kneeling penitents:

Just across from the Monk we come upon the secret highlight of the Temple, this 1,000 year old heavy but small image of a Buddha, about the size of a Teddy Bear:

Mr Lao explains that you are supposed to kneel down in front of this Buddha, clear your mind of distractions and impure thoughts, pray for what you wish, and if your mind is pure and undistracted, you will then grab the Buddha by the arms and be able to lift him up---that means your wish has been partially granted. Then you try to hoist the Buddha a second time, and if you can't budge him, your wish has definitely been granted.

Mr Lao orders me to go first, so like the girl in this pic, I comply.
Unfortunately, removing mental distractions was a bit of a chore for me. We were still in uniform (no ties) but in the bottom heel of my right black sock was a hole about the size of a silver dollar.
So as I knelt down in front of the Buddha, exposing my sock hole while trying to purify my thoughts, I heard my co-pilot start laughing out loud@#!

Mr Lao made no noise, as he is too polite, but I was also conscious that the Monk on the throne was also staring at me from behind, and another penitent or 2 as well, so as I struggled to empty my mind of distractions and to come up with something to pray for, nothing did, so I prayed that I didn't have a hole in my sock, gripped the Buddha and...

...He didn't budge an inch@#$.

I didn't try a second time, so I stood up and then Mr Lao demonstrated to us how it was done. My partner then knelt down (he's just a youngster---only 48), and living in Park City Utah like Caro, he is also very pure and undistracted, so he was easily able to hoist up Buddha!

Mr Lao then requested that I try again, so I did, and having seen how he used his stomach muscles to get a bit of leverage, I knelt down, purified my mind of my sock hole, and happily lifted the Buddha. I happily tried a second time, feigned an inability to lift him twice, and thus successfully had my prayers answered.

On the way out, before passing various Temple Guardians Gods,
we stopped beneath multiple painted panels of the Life Of The Buddha, and thankfully there I was able to redeem myself, as I know much of his story well and was able to explain most of the panels to my partner, reminding him that the Buddha did not wear socks.

The next day, Mr Lao was driving us back to the airport. (This time since we were going to work, our treat was ice cold cans of Olong Tea---no mouthwash). Were again having a fun chat about what we did on the layover, so I mentioned to him I knew why I couldn't lift the Buddha the first time. He asked why, and I said it was because I was praying not to have a hole in my sock. That cracked him up, so I'm sure that story will make the rounds:)
Going forward in life, may we all be blessed to have such happy Cab Drivers as Mr Lao.

Happy Easter. Sawadikap!

TK,

Heard you were looking for a film scanner. My scanner is a Nikon Super Cool Scan. Just saw one on eBay for $700. It was top of the line back at the end of the film era. I haven't used mine in years, but know you need more modern software for it. I remember there was a 3rd party supplier that allowed for HDR scans of Kodachrome. It also allows for neg strips in a holder as well as std. slides.

glasater

What a wonderful story, daddy I so enjoy reading about your adventures.

A question for you, have you ever seen playing cards in your travels in the orient. A friend of mine had a lovely deck of cards with Chinese pictures on them based on characters from the book(s) "Dream of Red Mansions". They were just lovely and I really coveted them :-)

daddy on iPad

Glasater,

Nothing comes to mind, but I will keep my eyes peeled from now on. In some of the back alleys in Guangzhou I'll come upon folks at outdoor tables playing either dominos or Mah Jong with those domino style tiles, but the only time I know I've seen the cards come out accompanying those Mah Jong tiles was on 727 layovers 20 years back in layovers at the Vegas and Reno Casino's. I enjoyed playing Pai Gow Poker in the cheap seats, as it took longer than normal to lose, but I enjoyed looking over the shoulders of the Big Shots at the serious money tables. I'm still in Taiwan for another 24 hours, so I'll ask my barmaids tonight for their valuable input, and I bet they have some:)

BTW, I have a vague recollection that one of our NorthWest JOMers, possibly you, used to deal cards. Is my memory as full of s#%^ holes as my sock?

A Joyful Easter to all!

Jack is Back!

Clarice,

Spot on. However, after some phone discussions with various members of Mrs. JiB's family yesterday, they don't appear serious or understand the immediacy of what is happening. It's the lack of leadership. No one except the Premier of Flanders, Marc de Weber, has any urgency or intellect to absorb what is going on and trying to come to some strategy to deal with this deadly disease in their very lives. They think it's one off and if only Israel will give back land, blah, blah, blah......

You see where this is going.

clarice

Narciso, isn't that Chi Tribune article something--In Syria the DOD backed rebels are fighting the CIA backed ones.

clarice

Thanks. Daddy, I love your stories--Wish you had them all in one place so I could re read them all again.

I am not a Psychiatrist or play one on TV or even stay in a Holliday Inn but I truly believe Obama is mentally ill. Either that or he is an alien who lives in a alternate universe and wants us to join him.

clarice

Happy Birthday, CathyF!

GUS

Jack, I agree, Obama is mentally ill. He is certainly psychologically troubled. You were commenting on the general Belgian populous. It's propaganda, and mass delusion. Political correctness and ideology over ride intellect and reason. It's like the LEFT are all drug addicted.

daddy

Last week, David Brooks of the New York Times told us that he, David Brooks was the imbecile responsible for Trump.

“Trump voters are a coalition of the dispossessed. They have suffered lost jobs, lost wages, lost dreams. The American system is not working for them, so naturally they are looking for something else. Moreover, many in the media, especially me, did not understand how they would express their alienation. We expected Trump to fizzle because we were not socially intermingled with his supporters and did not listen carefully enough. For me, it’s a lesson that I have to change the way I do my job if I’m going to report accurately on this country.”

Today, NicK Kristof of the New York Times, tells us that he, Nick Kristof, was the moron personally responsible for Trump: My Shared Shame: The Media Helped Make Trump

...we should also acknowledge another force that empowered Trump: Us....Although many of us journalists have derided Trump, the truth is that he generally outsmarted us....Mea culpa...I’ve never met a national politician in the U.S. who is so ill informed, evasive, puerile and deceptive as Trump."

Yet you just told us Kristof, that he outsmarted you? I'm confused.

Oh well, lets make bets on who'll be the next NYTimes Reporter to come out and tell us they're an idiot.

My money's on Flathead Friedman.

henry

NYT reporters admitting they are idiots? What happened to their pant crease?

Happy Birthday CathyF!

Hard-hitting, honest Piece, Clarice. Can't find fault with a word of it.

As I watch Bar TV here CNN is running live video feeds headlined "Right Wing Protesters at Brussels Memorial"
I Recall last night Taiwanese Barmaid Sue telling me she had canceled her trip to Europe because she's too afraid to visit. Yep.

Also Insty had a great tweet today, linking to Obama's twin Airforce 1's taking his dance Team to Argentina. Can't link to it, but it was something like "I never want to hear another GD word about my Carbon Footprint.".

Roger that, Insty.

JIB--I saw a seriously sad cartoon this weekend--Israelis waving Belgian flags and extending help while Belgians hugging Palestinians and extending help to them. Iy's hard for me to keep sympathizing with such people I'm sorry to say.

Since it's Easter I'll redact what they really deserve, but God knows what I'm thinking, so I guess I should go do a little penance.

Happy Easter all.

Devin Nunes is blasting 404 and Lurch's lack of strategy against ISIS. Will and Jason Riley agree. Kirsten Powers makes excuses for Zippy hobnobbing and tango and golfing; seriously she said he works hard, which is a steaming pile, and deserves to relax. Even my wife knows that's a crock. Juan says the terrorists win when we fight them.

Miss Marple, in not covering him, I think they are playing their last card. Their normal practice of negative coverage for anti-progressives like him just seems to help him.

They must be at their wits' end.

Captain Hate

Cruz says 404, Rodham and Lurch are too PC to fight ISIS and willingness to admit terrorists into the country. Blames Bane for dismantling what Bloomberg created. We shouldn't repeat Europe's mistakes.

404 has been a disaster to the world and sucks up to dictators. 404 and Rodham hate Cruz more than terrorists.

Trump is out of his depth on foreign policy and he reacted by attacking Cruz's wife. It's also why he refuses to debate. Roger Stone is behind the Enquirer lies.

Art in Newport

Daddy, thank you for the pictorial travel posts. They are unfailinglying interesting and educational.

Been reading them for a year and just felt like it was time to express some appreciation.

Captain Hate

Powers: Rubio and various anti Trump people were shopping the Enquirer story. Juan: the big wins are the beginning of the end for Bern. Riley: Rodham still has a huge delegate lead. Will: at the convention Cruz will be in good shape. Kasich has been unsuccessful everywhere. Riley: how can the GOP turn away from Trump? Juan: Trump would be a disaster for the GOP.

Very enjoyable. Pope Francis was on his best behavior. :)

GUS

the idea that the President of the United States of America, would just HUG the Cuban Dictator is BIZZZZZZZARRE. Seriously, Lt Barry Jugears seems to think Raul Castro is a brother in arms, or a long lost Uncle who is being brought back into the family. Obama is nuts. Would he hug Putin???? Obama lives in his own world. He seems to view the world in fairy tale terms.
On a related note. The Rolling Stones played Havana for FREE. There has never been any sort of British boycott of Cuba, so the only reason this is news, is because CASTRO ALLOWED IT.
The LIBTARD NOTION that Cuba has been economically harmed by the U.S. is absurd. There are over 150 other countries that Cuba has been FREE to trade with.

Captain Hate

Will: Senators should hold SC hearings. Powers: Queen Roberts is upset at no hearings. Riley: donks are hypocrites. Juan seems very confused about what the Constitution says. Powers is being dense about what Biden said. Will wants to protect RINOs. Juan hates the Little Sisters of the Poor,

And that's a wrap.

My parents both smoked, and both died of lung cancer. So, after smoking for a few decades, I finally gave it up for good (maybe too late, but I'll say better than never and keep fingers crossed).

But on a much brighter note, Happy Easter, JOM'ers. Just our son will drop by today, as he lives nearby; the girls are too far away to make the trip home, and are otherwise engaged regardless. I'm making the braided bread with colored eggs, since my son allows that mine is superior to my wife's. We'll just have a late brunch with kielbasa and scrambled eggs and the bread; I have no idea where that family tradition (kielbasa on Easter) comes from. Anyway, happy happy.

The New York Times people are lining up their excuses for why they suddenly don't cover Trump at all. When you see a pattern, they're up to something.

Miss Marple,

David Brooks says "“Trump voters are a coalition of the dispossessed. ...many in the media, especially me, did not understand how they would express their alienation. We expected Trump to fizzle because we were not socially intermingled with his supporters and did not listen carefully enough. For me, it’s a lesson that I have to change the way I do my job if I’m going to report accurately on this country.”

So does that mean Brooks is going to have to mingle with Joe Six Pack, with Joe the Plumber, with hotdog eating blue collar boys from Barrow?

I'd love to know when and where Brooks does what he says he needs to do and he identifies which particular Marine Jarhead vets from Tuscaloosa he starts hanging with for political advice.

How do we make sure he holds to that promise and identifies his new American advisors, so that we can insure he's not simply issuing lip service in a press statement so that he can go stick his nose up Davis Gergen's rectum once again? I want accountability damn it!

GUS

There's an intelligent crowd. Israel is to blame for MUZZTARDS who have settled in Western Europe blowing up Brussels airport and metro.
Liberals continue you display their PATHOLOGY on a daily basis. Israel is to blame.

Miss Marple 2

daddy,

I think a great reality show would be following brooks as he navigates the bars and diners from Tuscaloosa to Green Bay, Terre Haute to Muscatine.

It's fun to imagine him in one of those dive bars along a riverfront trying to ascertain the political opinions of biker guys or enlisted troops. I also like the idea of him having to attend a country church picnic, a hog-calling contest at a county fair, and assorted things the smart set never has contact with.

lyle

Incredible. And pathetically sad all the same. They deserve their fate.
